My understanding is that the power cable comes out to the front like it does to stop water flowing into the camera. As the majority of people point the camera down, if the cable was the other way then water could flow down the cable and into the power port. By facing the cable the other way, the cable has to loop back on itself causing the water to stay on the cable. When electricians run cables outdoors, they do a similar thing by creating a U shape before going into a wall, this stops water flowing into the building. I would have much preferred them to use a barrel jack, as to power the camera 24/7 I need to drill a 15mm hole to get the end of the cable through, whereas the thickness of the cable is only around 6mm.
Debating on getting 2 cameras, I need one for front and back yard. North side front, south side of the house with back sun exposure. Ideally leave them inside and plugged in. Suggestions on a brand or brands that would work for my concerns. No lag between movements, leaves blowing creating false alerts, sunlight making the camera unable to see.
The camera is not vandal-proof. Anybody with a long tree branch could knock the camera off because it's only holding on magnetically, and also the white wire should be hidden inside the product and not exposed where anybody could cut the wire or damage the wire. And add 4K, 12MP, 180-degree view, crystal clear picture quality day or night, and able to read fonts 100+ feet away. Or just copy what Eufy did for their "Eufy Floodlight Cam 2 Pro!"
If you have the anti theft mount from Wasserstein the hood will reflect the IR back into the lens and ruin your night vision. I fixed this by painting the inside of the hood flat black
I was wondering why his night vision shot was so much better than mine. Installed the Wasserstein mount on day one so I just assumed the IR was trash on this camera. So thanks for the tip!

The power cable actually makes sense. My camera is against the wall and points down into my yard, if the cord pointed back then the wall would be in the way and I wouldn't be able to point the camera down. If you saw my camera on the wall it looks right and you'd completely understand why it's pointed forward. The big issue I have is with the home app. It sucks! I have the nest doorbell that works on the nest app and that's why I bought the nest camera. Except the camera doesn't work on the nest app. I find notifications don't catch things very well, they miss alot. But having 24/7 recording and how well the nest app can scrub the timeline makes it easy to see if anything came into view. The home app doesn't allow for scrubbing the timeline. It takes 3 to 5 seconds to load every time you move to a different point on the timeline. So if something happen over night the camera zones didn't catch it (which it so often doesn't) you will have to review a whole 6 to 8 hours of footage in real time because there is no way to fast forward or rewind like the nest app. Not using the nest app is a HUGE downgrade for this camera.
Man, I'm glad I read this! I already have 5 cameras all running through the Nest app, so adding one that I had to access in a different app would be terrible. I hope they fix this!
Google was pretty dumb to not utilize nest app. The home app does suck and I never use that. I use nest app and never miss any camera notifications and works flawlessly
What a disappointment these cameras are. I purchased the doorbell and two cameras. The doorbell does work. With the two cameras, they went through the setup correctly and I saw live video through them but when I finished setting them up I went to view the live feed and they were turned off. I tried to go to "more" to turn them on and the option was ghosted. I could turn the doorbell on and off just fine but the cameras were permanently off. They are both about 12-15 feet from my from my Netgear router and I also tried 5G and even different routers but to no avail. I went through the same process as setting up the doorbell so I don't think I did anything wrong. I just think the cameras wifi circuitry is subpar. Reading other comments on different nest cam (battery) cameras I'm seeing a striking commonality of the cameras inability to connect to wifi. My advice, wait or find something better, or you're taking your chances...
I didn't see any info about recharging. If you install it outdoors, 9 ft. up like in your video... do you have to take it down every few weeks to recharge it or replace batteries?!?1
Good video. I have the new Nest camera. The power cord is not a problem, despite what the video says. I have to charge mine about every 3 months, with it set on "people" and fairly low people traffic. It takes 5 hours to fully charge. I like the camera. Note, however, it occasionally (but rarely) fails to record a person even in full sunlight, and I can't explain that, but it's happened about once every 2 months. Also, one time when my internet provider crashed and then resumed service, it was a little difficult to get the Nest camera connected again.
We got a single (thus far--about 1 month in use) 'false positive' 'person detected' on our indoor Nest cam battery--probably due to shifting light entering the room from a transom window. No problems with any of our 2 outdoor Nest Cam battery cameras. Our outdoor cameras are also set to 'people'--too many feral cats, raccoons, coyotes, etc. to have 'animal' set for our backyard camera.
The IQ was not the previous model to this, it was a higher resolution camera so you are comparing am older higher end, higher resolution model to the newer lower resolution one. You are comparing two different products, you should be comparing the new one to the older one that is of the same model at least or do you normally compare a hatchback to a racing car?
If the wire were not angled forward, users would not be able to aim the camera downward. It's really not that mysterious. It would have been nice to have the connector for the power wire be reversible...but not that big a deal.
I'll wait until they come out with an updated app and website so you can view this new version with the rest of the Nest cams. Otherwise what's the point? FYI - reviewers of the anti-theft mount complain of the design causing a washed out view due to the upper fin causing a reflection of light.
I bought mine without watching any reviews and was disappointed it didn’t show up on my nest app with my other cameras. I read that Google doesn’t plan on adding these to the nest app. Honestly, the biggest disappointment is the power cable facing outward. I fixed the IR reflection with flat black on the inside of the Wasserstein anti-theft case.
I just bought this and was so impressed I immediately ordered a second. Even in 2022, this holds its own. My only complaint is that it does not work with the nest app. I know they are killing Nest as we know it, but the app will still be around for a while and is way better than the Home app
I agree 100 percent. Nest App showing all live cams at 1 time is sooooo much better than Google Home. Very disappointed like most. Why not add that to the new app? SMH
@@jimbob6951 the Google home app shows all the live cams at once too......you have to click the cameras circle button at the top of the screen just below your home name and it will pull up a page that shows all the cameras live

@@jimbob6951 yes you just say ok Google show (camera name) and it will show the video on your hub. I just tried it on my nest hub 2nd gen ( the smaller ones) with my Google battery cameras and my indoor ones and they work great. I don't have a max but I'm sure it's the same
I think the “backwards” cable is to make an enforced “drip loop” in the cable to reduce moisture movement into your house if you have it permanently connected. Also once mounted it is easier to attach and leave in place from the front (so you don’t have to move what the camera is pointing at)
I didn't even think about that, but makes sense. I feel like with this being the biggest complaint from many reviews Google should at least write a blog post about it. Also if there was no obvious reason a third part could probably make a connector that faces the other way (probably wouldn't be supported by Google). There was definitely intent. I first though it was just in case you angle it at a hard down angle.
So i saw a picture on the google site that showed the camera face down on a table charging. In that position the cable angle made sense. Link below, scroll to middle of page. store.google.com/product/nest_cam_battery_setup?hl=en-US
Would be really slick if they could have had the power cable connect directly to a wireless charging camera mount so there a essentially no wires at all.
@@jschiegner That would be the best in terms of it being completely sealed and waterproof and also to hide any cables for a seamless look. Google should hire you for that 😅
I just got one of these cameras, and while the video looks good, it doesn’t pick most of the events that happen. I’ve moved it, adjusted all the settings, etc…And still it misses most events. So far I’m not very impressed.
I have three Outdoor IQ cameras and I need another one. Of course they are discontinued and going for ludicrous amounts on eBay. Even coreded, these battery cams with magnetic mounts seem like a HUGE step back. I'm not at all happy with what Google is doing with their cams and doorbells. I live in a place with extreme winters. You want to kill a battery quickly? Expose it to extreme colds.
I think the cable goes front because they do not want the water sliding from the cable to the connector. If it is going at the back it will be difficult to lineup the cable upside-down.
The power cord…. It juts out away from the wall to reduce water from running into the power port. The design attempts to carry water away from the port instead of towards it.
Its 3 hours of recorded clips (events) not 3 hours of time, as its not 24/7 recording. So events recorded will still be on the camera when you wake up the next morning.
So the position of the cable makes sense now, if you tilt the camera down a lot, the cable wouldn’t fit. I just setup my camera and I initially agreed the cable should have faced the other way, until I basically pushed my camera all the way down.
I haven't used a whole battery yet but, according to CNET a battery can last between 1-7 months. It's all going to depend on the features you have turned on and how active the area is that you're monitoring.
I'd love to see a follow up on this maybe with battery life info on the doorbell add well from real world use. Maybe also app info to make it a long enough video since by then they would have fix really gripes about the nest app vs googled home app not having things.

The side by side was great ! The new camera was much nicer. Only negative is that it doesn’t pick up colors at night time. Speaking from the law enforcement experience it would be nice that it had color to pickup clothing if someone breaks in or does anything suspicious around your house.
I have both the new and old versions of these cameras. A few things to be aware of: 1. Google doesn't support the new one with the old Nest Software 2. The old Nest software is still better for the security cameras than the new Google Home software is. Many features are not supported. 3. Google Home still doesn't support the old camera. So you are locked into using two different apps if you have a system with mixed old and new cameras. 4. Yes, you can get 24/7 recording service for both new and old cameras, but the Google Home software only allows triggered events to be downloaded. I couldn't believe this. Selling 24/7 camera service that doesn't allow the content to be downloaded borders on fraud. But that was the way it was the last time I checked. 5. When I went to buy another camera I actually had to pay more for the old model than the new model. Presumably because I'm not the only one to realize what I've said above. Caveat: all of the above was true, I have no information as of today that it is still not true. Opinion: I would not buy a Google Security system as of today. It is not clear what Google's intents are, but they have treated old customers poorly and whether they have long term goals for this product line is not clear to me. They love to brag about new features, but they have done nothing to fix long standing problems.
I used to love the Nest ecosystem. Can't believe how badly Google is messing this up. Once my smoke alarms "expire" I'm moving on. I cancelled my NestAware waiting for Nest/Google to sort this while Nest App/Google Home mixed system. They still haven't done anything and have doubled down if anything on their stupidity.
@@UrcurseInCanada It is a strange situation and it is hard to see what the motivation for this is. Maybe: 1. NIH, Google programmers are so great we don't need that NEST stuff. 2. Google sees the future as integrated house controllers and NEST wasn't that so they're putting all their resources into getting Google Home working and they just don't care about security camera part of that right now. 3. Google is such a giant corporation that top level management sometimes doesn't notice when a little element of the organization goes off the rails . 4. Internal politics. I bought this battery-operated camera because I believe my landlord is turning off the power in order to shut down my Blink camera and enter my apartment without permission. I'm a little concerned about the 3 hour window, but once I receive notification of entry, I should be able to save to the cloud or download it on my phone, right? Is there any other advice for the battery-operated use of the Nest? I would plug it in if I'm away for a vacation. This year, 2024, will be my last year in this apartment. If I capture the thief on camera, I plan to use this to break the least and move out!
I do not recommend Nest or Google. I have had 2 cameras for years and now you can’t even talk to a customer service person now when have a problem. I will most likely drop Google / Nest when my period expires. Will never buy another Google product. They do not care about any customer at all. Just want your money. Done…
Never considered installing it without using the power cord, having to charge it would be a Pia. Just wired a receptacle in attic and fished the cord through the soffit. The camera clarity is not that good.
Junk. It constantly disconnects and you have you have to set it up again with the app a lot. I bought a 3 pack this 2 years ago and have regretted it. Much of the came the camera is offline and you have to fight with the app to find the camera when setting it up. Very frustrating and not worth the hassle. All other devices not on the google platform works fine and has no issue maintaining a wifi connection. Stay away.
Just ordered this cam 😎 I wanted a camera on the front yard for a long time. This morning i noticed that my door mat was moved like half a meter. Normally it stays put even during heavy storms. So i feel the suspicion that burglars moved the door mat to see if anyone is home before attempting a break-in attempt .. So time to put more camera's up 🙁 Also stupid that they switched from the Nest app to the Google Home app. Now i have to use 2 different apps to use all my camera's.
I purchased it and returned it the next day. Not compatible with the nest app only functions on google home. If you have other nest products you have to run both apps. So you loose the features of the Nest app such as: Spaces and scrubbing through video footage.

Great video. Got a question, 3 hours of free video means you literallly have 3 hrs to catch an event before its auto deleted forever? Might be hard to catch an incident within 3 hrs.
Great review but I dont think I heard anything regarding the life of the battery - How long does it last - Every system of this kind ( battery powered) have limited life duration. What is the estimated life duration of the battery for this unit? thanks
4k or 2K even would the drain battery super fast that's why it's 1080P and i don't think you are understanding the 3 hour recording. It's 3 hours of events. And you can customize it's filters so it doesn't record animals or other motions. So if someone is walking around and breaks in it'll record it as an event because it will detect a person. The spot light version is coming out soon. I agree with you on that,. I think it's a must have, so I'm waiting for that version.
Are you talking about a new camera that has a spotlight? Or are you taking about floodlight that has the spotlight? That is two different things if that's the case I'd wait too, but I have heard of another camera.
Thank you for the video as I just got mine and am about to install them but wanted to know if you can get the 24/7 recording option if you have them plugged into solar panels?
Thank you for this review. I agree with the camera quality BUT the battery life is horrible. I live in the mountains of Colorado. The current night temperatures have been 40-50degrees F. I have 2 cameras and both will lose charge to 20% within 3 days. I have the settings to optimize battery life BUT don't like that I have to do that! What will happen when nights are regularly 10 degrees F?? I already caved and bought the $35 weatherproof cable for both cameras. Any suggestions for increasing battery life? Is this just happening to me? Also, I prefer the old Nest AP over using Google Home. The history feature on the Nest Ap was so easier & quicker to use than Google Home.
I'm in Denver and my camera has been up for a month and has only gone down to 26% (started at 85%). I think maybe you should check to see if your camera is turning on constantly due to motion (animals?).
I purchased two of these cameras. One of them the battery dies 20-30% per day. Surprisingly all the reviews I watched so far conveniently are leaving out the worst part is that the nest aware events DOES NOT work. At best it is 2/10. If a car pulls up and it happens to catch it then I see the last few seconds of vehicle driving away. I had two bicycles out front removed right in front of camera and it showed nothing in the events. I could go on with many examples. Spent hours and days with Google and they offered to credit one month subscription of nest aware 😂
I’ve had one of these cameras up for four weeks. The camera battery lasted just shy of 3.5 weeks. Really depends how many motion events the camera is registering
These Nest cams do seem good, but I just can't get around the fact that Google seems to have designed these outdoor cams for ease of theft, even promoting that they should be mounted just 6ft high. I guess this boosts sales with all the replacements that will be needed. They should have come standard with a more secure anti-theft mounting. Unfortunately a bit too expensive for me to just put out there for someone to walk off with. :(
Thank you for the great video. Can you confirm that Google do not have an offocial wired outdoor version of this new cam. Is it ok to leave this 'battery' one wired all the time?
Google desperately needs to make a wired hub for those of us that don't want to rely on wireless. Still sucks you can't use the new Nest cam with the older Nest app.
That is because that App will be going away with it's functionality in the Google Home App, much of which is there now, which includes the older cameras.

3 hour recording is so stingy.. Should be 10 hours minimum.
Yea, I’d love to see 24hr
It sucks for 24/7 recording. Even plugged in, the battery cant keep up.
The Nest Cam Battery replaced the Nest Cam IQ in the Google Nest lineup.
when you do the walk back you should hold up a collection of numbers similar to a license plate...
Yea I need to take a page from LifeHackster and get a custom plate for these tests. :)
If the wire were not angled forward, users would not be able to aim the camera downward.
It's really not that mysterious.
It would have been nice to have the connector for the power wire be reversible...but not that big a deal.
And if you use it on the indoor mount for fulltime power, the cord would be interfering with the indoor mount if it pointed to the back of the camera.
Hey Steve! Could you do a comparison with the original nest cam outdoor camera? just curious how it stacks up against the battery.
@@jamess7841 I see. Thanks sooo much. That is a game changer for me, although I do still much prefer nest if it would also show the battery camera I have on my driveway.
@@jamess7841 Is there a way to view the battery camera on Nest Hub Max? I tell it to stream my doorbell camera a lot and can see if someone is near my door. But I bought this camera to view my driveway. I don't keep my phone attached to me like most do I guess and have a nest hub in near every room.
@@jimbob6951 yes you just say ok Google show (camera name) and it will show the video on your hub. I just tried it on my nest hub 2nd gen ( the smaller ones) with my Google battery cameras and my indoor ones and they work great. I don't have a max but I'm sure it's the same
1080p is absolutely fine. Its battery powered, if it was 1440p or 4K the battery life would suck.
As long as you don't need to read license plates and other various details on clothing.
Link below, scroll to middle of page.
store.google.com/product/nest_cam_battery_setup?hl=en-US
Besides the water issue, it also ensures that the camera can have a downward angle without the wire creating an unnecessary limiting angle.
How long does the charge last before needing to recharge? Also, how long does it take to recharge? Otherwise great info!
I'm using one now on our front door. On average (for us) with default settings it is using about 2.75% a day pretty consistently. I installed it on 8/26 and it is 9/7 today so right now its at around 65%. At this rate, I expect it to last about 36 days total (without changing any settings/battery saving mode).
@@MusicMonkey5555 I'm using one now on our front door. On average (for us) with default settings it is using about 2.75% a day pretty consistently. @@MusicMonkey5555 I got the doorbell also but uninstalled it. Looked like it was getting just over a month. I uninstalled it though because even though it was near the wifi, it still sometimes took a couple of presses before it notified us on the nest/Google homes. Might just be the one I had was a dud, but I opted to just keep the camera instead and send back the doorbell.
The side by side was great ! The new camera was much nicer. Only negative is that it doesn’t pick up colors at night time. Speaking from the law enforcement experience it would be nice that it had color to pickup clothing if someone breaks in or does anything suspicious around your house.
Yea, if Wyze can do it on their $35, i wanted to see this camera do that too. :)
I have both the new and old versions of these cameras. A few things to be aware of:
1. Google doesn't support the new one with the old Nest Software
Maybe:
Somebody with power at Google, has decided that the failure of Google Home and the Google Nest stuff is in their interest and they're working to make that happen.
I don't know and all of the above seems unlikely, but why would Google do this?
@@davefoc I don’t know but Google also has a habit of acquire stuff or starting stuff and then driving it into the ground for no reason.
Like how do you not look at the Nest app and think, wow this is nice/clean/user friendly and overhaul Google Home to mimic it now that your own it? The Home app is god awful. It’s like being in a developer mode UI.
@@UrcurseInCanadaagreed.. Google is the godfather of killing its own babies.. The amount of awesome apps they've had that just spontaneously got axed blows me away
Did you talk about battery life?
Does this require a hub? Not a fan of hubs and am looking for a solution that is direct to app. Do you recommend anything for what I am looking for?
You are the first-and possibly only-reviewer to mention the threaded mount option! Even Google’s product description omits this encouraging feature. Instead, Google recommends the Wasserstein security cable if you mount the camera higher than one story…in the event that the camera falls!
Garbage product from Google. My cameras dont catch any activity until you're within about 10 feet. Completely obsolete.
Done…
I like the true motion. Instead of the grainy video where it's going 50miles per second
Stay away.
Those camera suck! They do not work with the Nest App! Stay away from them
Just ordered this cam 😎 I wanted a camera on the front yard for a long time.
Returned it. Doesn’t work with nest.
Does the Eufy doorbell also automatically pops up on the hub, when the doorbell is pressed?
I purchased it and returned it the next day. Not compatible with the nest app only functions on google home. If you have other nest products you have to run both apps. So you loose the features of the Nest app such as: Spaces and scrubbing through video footage.
Did you say the battery lasts only for 5 hours? Maybe I misunderstood?
Spot light why. Think you get a flood light camera what is a person that going to steal do, when light comes on. Put his head down . No light the criminal might not know your taking a picture of his face
My Friend, you say Poor design regarding the power pug. Look at your video back and put a wall behind where you trying to plug in a charger. It it a good design to making it easier to do
Google customer service is horrible for both Nest and RUclips music! 👎
THX, good to know.
Great video. Got a question, 3 hours of free video means you literallly have 3 hrs to catch an event before its auto deleted forever? Might be hard to catch an incident within 3 hrs.
For battery power, how often you need to charge the camera? You need to go up on ladder each time I assume? Please advise.thanks
I like the new camera but you are basically forced to buy the cable for it because if you don't you won't have live stream
The Google home app is horrible
I charged my cameras up and have a hard time reconnecting it seems the wife I will not keep it working properly
Don’t like as can’t use with the much better nest app. Definite need for constant power to see video 24/7
Great review but I dont think I heard anything regarding the life of the battery - How long does it last - Every system of this kind ( battery powered) have limited life duration. What is the estimated life duration of the battery for this unit? thanks
Unfortunately there's no way to delete clips and events from the history. That is truly odd.
Disappointed you can’t see the camera from the Nest app only from the google home app.
?? Can 2 people be on the app to view the cameras at the same time ? Can you answer this for the Arlo also ??
So if I only ran it on solar it wouldn’t record anything? I can only watch in the app live?
Cameras are great, but google home app is lacking for camera controls/features
Power cable angle may be like that for ease of charging.
How far the Nest camera detect people for notifications in zones ?
Thanks for the great review. Just ordered a set of these after my car was broken into last night.
Thank you for the video as I just got mine and am about to install them but wanted to know if you can get the 24/7 recording option if you have them plugged into solar panels?
My nest camera is hard wired why is the battery dead and not showing on the app??
Thats the nature of battery powered surveillance camera. I always have mine wired and dont have the hassle of charging it.
What did you think of the battery life of the camera?
I stopped the video at once he didnt understand water drip design lmao.
This camera is NOT viewable via web browser.
Really depends how many motion events the camera is registering
is this 3 hours of continuous recoding, or up to 3 hours of recorded events?
These Nest cams do seem good, but I just can't get around the fact that Google seems to have designed these outdoor cams for ease of theft, even promoting that they should be mounted just 6ft high. I guess this boosts sales with all the replacements that will be needed. They should have come standard with a more secure anti-theft mounting. Unfortunately a bit too expensive for me to just put out there for someone to walk off with. :(
maybe you can buy a theft proof case that encloses the camera and hides the cable.
I purchased two and send them back cause wasn’t able to connect.
Quality looks so much better than Ring’s stick up cam. Hmmmm
Yeah I think they intended to have people charge it in the house
3 hours of recording time, not 3 actual hours.
Looks great for a battery operated camera. Definitely adding these to the housing list
Why doesn't is use the native nest app?
You forgot to mention wifi ?only and phone controls
Thank you for the great video. Can you confirm that Google do not have an offocial wired outdoor version of this new cam. Is it ok to leave this 'battery' one wired all the time?
yes, in fact for 24/7 sub, you need to have the wire in at all times
Awesome video
It was very helpful!
Thank you sir.
It does not connect to the Nest App, so I’m sending it back.
I saw the full video and it said to connect to google Home and not google nest . 1 year late lol
Google desperately needs to make a wired hub for those of us that don't want to rely on wireless. Still sucks you can't use the new Nest cam with the older Nest app.
That is because that App will be going away with it's functionality in the Google Home App, much of which is there now, which includes the older cameras.
@@taffyone1 The Nest App is not going anywhere as older Nest equipment doesn't work properly nor is even remotely integrated with the Google Home App. The Google Home App is a cluster f**k when it comes to home security products.

No doubt there will be improvements go forward to the Home App.
Does it do color at night if it has floodlight?
I just can't get around the fact that you have to pay for a theft proof wire.... my front yard is gated but this is a terrible setup in my opinion. Anyone can just walk up and snatch it down. Why wouldn't they add it in the package?? And to put more salt in the wound, the damn wire is always sold out.

the cable points outward so you can angle the camera however you want on the magnetic base. You can have it angled straight down if you want to and that way the chord won't get in the way.
Yep. You can actually buy an aftermarket cable where the connector is pointed perpendicular/90 degrees to the camera body. However, aftermarket cables are only a few dollars cheaper than the google-branded ones.
how can i schedule turn off and turn on the cam ?
i myself still choose “wired over wireless battery”!
There is a wire accessory, choice of16 or 32 feet
How the wire fits does not matter if you only have the wire connected when it is charging.
Yes, but if i want the 24/7 recording feature i have to have it plugged in. And i wonder which way it'll point for the solar power.
It reminds of apple with how simple it is.
Is this the best battery powered cam on the market? I'm new in this topic
It's probably the best quality 1080p camera out there.
How’s the delay before it starts recording? I have Arlo right now and it is about a 2 or 3 second delay to start recording.
I've had mine for a couple of days now and so far it is pretty ordinairy and very hit & miss on how long it takes for the event recording to start. I'm expecting that this is because of the onboard image processing and should improve over time with updates.
