  • Common names: Queen palm and Cocos palm
    Botanical name: Syagrus romanzoffiana
    Native area: South America
    Ripening time: mid summer.
Distribution: Mainly tropics and sub-tropics, the world over, however, you can create suitable microclimates in temperate climates, with a western wall that absorbs heat during the day and radiates the heat during the night.
Uses: food, fibre, fire, and water-based lubricant
The fruits are technically considered a 'drupe' like coconut, the flesh is extremely fibrous and the sweetness is obtained by rolling the fruits around in the mouth.
Alternatively, as shown in the video, you can soak the fruits for a day and pulverise the flesh to extract the juice.
The seeds can be cracked for the edible kernel.
The palm leaves and leaf sheath can be used for weaving and rope making.
The soaked fruits produce a natural water-based lubricant, which works quite nicely 😉.
Ibis birds and many other coastal birds will nest in the leaf 'crown', as it is notoriously difficult for predators to climb palm trees.

I love palm fruits. I've never imagined that there was also an edible nut inside. It's like a mini coconut. Very cool.

yeh, the little nut is a great surprise.
      experimentation is key.
