The Ray Speltzer arc and episode in his haunted house always stands out to me. Kinda feels like they mighta had a different director for that episode . It also might be one of the most “horror” themed episodes we’ve had, and I love that scene of dexter screaming right before he kills him lol

4:48 Apparently Louis was originally supposed to be a Brian copycat but due to a combination of the actor getting a part in a play and Michael C Hall finding the idea of 2 serial killers in the same department unbelievable they just made him a nerd who hated Dexter for not liking his game then had Isaak kill him.

I really enjoyed everything about this season other than the Hannah storyline. To me, it felt too similar to Lilah from Season 2: A woman who understands Dexter and encourages his Dark Passenger, but he can't be with her because she's evil. The only difference is that Dexter assumed Lilah was innocent when he first hooked up with her, whereas he knew right from the start that Hannah had killed people. I wasn't a fan of him sparing a known murderer and looking the other way while she kills more innocents. Seemed out of character.
I also wasn't keen on him killing Hannah's father. The guy was a jerk, but didn't meet the standards for the code. Part of the fun of Dexter is seeing how he deals with situations when the antagonist doesn't meet the code and he can't kill them (Doakes, Lewis), so it felt like they took an uncharacteristic easy way out here.

wasn't keen on him lying, using and gaslighting deb when trying to cover for hannah when she had tried to kill deb. that seemed out of character. he killed his bro for that. also he used her till the end to aide and abed that bitch at debs actual home. i could never believe that because dex said from the start if he had feelings for someone, it would be for deb. he wouldn't treat her like garbage then abandon her on top of it. in the second episode of season 1 he postpones his kill night just to help her.

Deb killed Laguerta to keep Dexter from doing it, like Harry said "you've never done a kill like this before" to kill a completely innocent person, i mean, we know that's not entirely true, he killed the photographer that he was wrong about and that guy in the bathroom after Rita died and a few others that are questionable in regards to "the code" but Deb doesn't know that at this point in the story. In Deb's mind, if Dexter kills Laguerta, Dexter meets the requirements of the type of people he kills, so he would be destroying himself, so to kill Laguerta is saving Dexter. It's not much of a stretch or that hard to understand, in the heat of the moment it is plausible.

She was actually the 4th person in the department to find out or come close. Doakes figured it out, Quinn also could have figured it out, and maybe even did, who really knows. Debra figures it out, and only then Laguerta comes to the party. That's still good but it doesn't make her a great detective.
Also in season 3 she did figure out Miguel Prado killing Ellen wolf...so maybe we should give her some credit.

    • @CharlieDexter99
      @CharlieDexter99 2 года назад +1

@@hbk425 I get your point but to say Deb “figured it out” is a bit of an over statement. She had not one bit of suspiciousness and just happened to stumble in Dexter killing Travis Johnston. I think Deb became downright irredeemable in the season, long before she shot Laguerta. In my opinion, her point of no return was when she blamed Dexter for Rita’s death. If you want to stretch it, it was his fault, but seeing how absolutely crushed by it he was and then she blames him for it, the death of his spouse and being left with 3 kids. Honestly I liked Lumen but when Deb got mad at him for him for dating her right after Rita, like damn, he’s been through a lot, he deserves the chance to be happy.

@@JohnSmith-wh2ob Because Hannah was a boring Mary Sue. She poisoned innocent people for kicks yet was portrayed as a good person killing to survive. Dexter goes from having no interest in her and wanting to kill her to completely obsessed after fucking her on his table. She tried to kill Deb out of jealousy that Dexter cared about his adopted sister more than her, a forced backstory involving her abusive dad was introduced to try and make viewers feel sorry for her and she used Dexter to get rid of evidence a reporter had that she killed with Wayne Randall. At least Season 7 is the only later season where Dexter goes back to his proper "bad guy killing worse people for selfish reasons" characterisation from 1-4 rather than the hero he's treated as in 5, 6, 8 and New Blood.

“Jamie might as well be his wife”
I think the reason she’s so understanding is because Dexter’s wife is dead and he’s a single parent. She probably thinks he’s leaving the house late to get laid or try and find another girlfriend or something. If she was dating Dexter it’d be Rita with season 2-4 all over again “Where are you?/Where are you going?/What are you doing?/etc.”

Lewis was set up to be the main antagonist, but from what I've read, Michael C. Hall didn't think it was believable for Lewis to pose as a genuine threat to Dexter and when he voiced his concern the writers also agreed and changed the script ultimately making him a minor nuisance. I'm curious what the additional storyline of Lewis would have been. He knew about Dexter being a serial killer and he was a computer wiz, so I'm guessing it would have been a more elaborate version of what we got. He would have had the power of black mail. I'm guessing the argument was, what's to prevent Dexter from tracking him down, since he has access to him and torturing him until he removes any potential blackmail or whatever.

  • @Jim-pq9pm

IMO, erase Hannah, focus more on Deb, Isaac and Laguerta

  • @dinglbarry1275
    @dinglbarry1275 2 года назад +4

Even though the Issac Sirko storyline gets closed out at the end of episode 9, I’ve always consider him the main villain of the season (even though there's a lot of potential threats lurking around Dexter at all times) and his entire story is awesome. He posses as a genuine threat to Dexter and had Dexter not had that divine intervention moment of dropping his keys, he was a goner. Sirko hands the love baton to Dexter in a sense, which carries over to his relationship with Hannah, in which he kills her father and ultimately turns her in... and the Laguerta build up comes in down the stretch. I can’t stress enough how good this season is. Even the little stories feel like they could have been milked more, but then it would have taken away from the awesomeness we got.
Season 7 is one of the top 3 seasons of Dexter without a doubt (2,4,7). Season 1 is still an excellent season that does everything right for an introductory season, but those 3 seasons are much more involved, which becomes much more apparent on re-watches. Season 7 breaks the cookie cutter final boss model and takes it to another level. Everyone overrates season 4 because the Trinity killer is so memorable and it ends in such epic fashion, but it's a much slower paced season with significantly more lag time than seasons 2 & 7. Even I've been guilty of overrating it because the note it leaves you on, but when you re-watch the seasons, which I've done countless times and remain present throughout and make note of enjoyment time and lag time, there is no way that season 4 is close to the best season. It's hands down season 2. Season 2 blows the shows wad, while that may or may not have been a smart move by the show, it's not a flaw on the season for having too much goodness at once. It's amazing that the show continued to produce at such a high level after season 2... however season 3 suffered. Anyways, season 7 comes in under challenging circumstances... after everything's been done on Dexter and delivers a season that's almost on the level of season 2.

  • @dinglbarry1275

Season 7 is one of the best seasons of Dexter, but one thing that bugs me is Deb struggling as much as she does on the issue of whether or not to turn Dexter in, when she already proved that she wouldn't when she let the vigilante killers go at the end of season 5. It's the same principle and since Dexter is family, there's no way in hell she would even entertain the idea, since she gave the same courtesy to two strangers... no Speltzer necessary. I understand her struggle with it on a personal level and finding Dexter's enjoyment of it creepy and I don't mind her trying to help him overcome his need, because her fear would be based on not wanting her brother to get caught, rather than the ethics of it. it also bugs me that the Lumen thing barely comes up and only comes up after the fact in which Deb refers to the chick with the goofy name. Remember..... the chick with the goofy name, who you felt for to the nth degree during the barrel girls case, who you let go. This should have never been an after thought, it should have been Dexter's central point and no way would Deb refer to it with a negative connotation. It confirms to me that the Michael C Hall Julia Stiles affair wasn't just a rumor after all even though the ending of season 5 pretty much confirmed it in the hasty manor they closed out her character with no mention of her since other than a reference to her goofy name.

weird how hall seemed to have so much influence on the scripts. his personal life should be separate from work. professionalism 101. if he was uncomfortable with jen or julia, he should not have mixed business with pleasure in the first place. i feel like jen might have channeled some of her real life anger toward him through deb with her endless frustration. even i wanted her to stfu or get shut up or just leave town. after seeing deb get in dexter's face repeatedly, anyone who says he's a monster is just wrong. a monster would've dealt with that but not once did he touch her or threaten her.

Hannah is just the worst, she's the clearest indication of the failures of the writers in the last two seasons to have Dexter behave as a coherent character. It makes no sense that she even survives her encounter with Dexter let alone that she becomes romantically involved with him. He spares her solely because he's horny? wtf? He already had that experience with Lila and he saw where it ends. Dexter wasn't even really interested in sex until he formed a close, emotional relationship with Rita. It's just nonsense, it totally ruins Dexter's character.

As much as I liked Speltzer someone online argued he was too comically grandiose for Dexter in a similar vane to the Doomsday killers. I mean once upon a time the Ice Truck Killer was the most serious threat they had faced. But apparently this whole time this guy has been making underground mazes and has only been heard of now is a little hard to believe? Like I think they said he'd done it for years. I dunno I think I'm nitpicking a bit. Maybe it's just a bit of a high escalation for me from his normal killers.

He was supposed to be the one Dexter used to lure Laguerta to the shipping container which makes me think the whole "George betrays Isaak and sends hitmen after him forcing Isaak to work with Dexter to kill them" plot was added so Isaak could be killed off earlier by George. So they replaced Isaak with Hector Estrada the gangster who ordered the murder of Dexter's mother who'd been mentioned as Santos Jimenez's boss in Season 2.

Hi Cody, where is the S8 review? 🤔 I'm dying to finally hear all your thoughts about it since you hate it so much lol 😆 but anyway in regards to this season I thought that was a great review and I agreed with the majority of your thoughts (except for when it comes to Hannah...anyone who tries to murder Deb not once but *twice* is firmly someone I'm not a fan of 😒). But yeah, I couldn't agree more about Issac Sierko (sp?) being a phenomenal "villian" and he really just made the season for me. Incredible actor and he played really well against Dexter too, there was really good chemistry btwn them. He was def my 2nd favorite villain after Trinity. And as for everything you said about Deb shooting LaGuerta...man I seriously wish you'd been writing for the show. I absolutely loved the alternate scenario you gave where LaGuerta has a gun on Dexter and that's why Deb shoots him. It makes soooo much more sense than Deb just basically shooting her for no reason! Like you said she could've easily just left & let Dex kill her, it probably would've been enough to eat her up inside knowing she did nothing to prevent it. But to have her shoot LaGuerta who was sedated, had no weapon, and wasn't a threat in that moment doesn't make any sense whatsoever, you totally called that one! I really liked this season overall though too.

I am with you with many of your points rewatching season 7 few days ago. I continued to season 8 to the 2nd or 3rd episode and the moment Vogel said to Dexter you cannot kill me because I don't fit your code, I simply walked away closed it and delete all Dexter. I rewatched all Dexter after the messy season 9 and for me it is the same anxiety feeling I got with a bad ending. Debra coming to kill La Guerta it reminds me of a youtube video that said the show Dexter doesn't understand moral dilemmas which should be upon the decision of Dexter, not having another female saving him. And I actually grew empathy for La Guerta, even though she is all politics, she is one good smart woman, they tried to make her that she is just a sneaky bitch, but she is smarter than Debra, and they just put her down like nothing...... And then cliche Debra doing all those messed up stuff to punish herself? it is like everybody are punishing themselves for Dexter, and Dexter seems always fine. It is kind of annoying. You have a Dexter that feels glimpses of emotions and then puff, in big moral and important decisions we all wanted to see what he will do finally Dexter is saved by women..... come on. And then at season 9, when you have no women saving Dexter he finally kills an innocent. What happen to the code? not killing La guerta? He seems to forget the code pretty easily 3 times already. He is so attached to his life, to the mask he wears, that he is willing to kill a very smart woman who got him! And over there I have a moral problem with that and the show failed me. I think it would be much more satisfying for Dexter to face jail time for his crimes and somehow work with the police as a profiler since he has a talent for sniffing killers. That would be for me much better storyline and I would love to see a Dexter dealing with moral dilemmas by HIMSELF.
I am at an age with some maturity and I don't like Debra being in love with Dexter just because a psychologist put it in her head.... like this show must really hate psychologists. Debra emotionally is all over the place and its gross. Someone who developed erotic feelings for her brother just because a psychologist took her there.... doesn't really deserves to be Lieutenant. She is emotionally annoying. She annoyed me all the time after she had on her head the whole "in love" situation..... make me dislike her a lot. So after that I simply didn't care anymore.

Some plotlines felt forced because of what they were trying to do in the future season......Deb being in love with Dex was not to make her feel bad it was to completely justify Deb not taking action against Dex
They made Deb kill Laguerta for :-
    1. Deb can feel what it's like to kill
    2. Dex and Vogel can show the audience through Deb....why Dexter's killing isn't that bad
    3. If Deb knew Dex killed Laguerta......she would have never expected him
    4. They wanted to keep the code intact.....killing laguerta would have broken it and we would have demanded Dex to die in season 8
All this because they wanted Dexter to go unpunished in the final season
I'm not saying these were good plotlines.....I'm just explaining the reason writers wrote it

The major negative i cld think of was quinn's story, he seems to be too smart to fall for a stripper honestly, but hey i am not complaining. i never got why Deb had to shoot Laguerta like I understand that she chose Dexter in that moment but she didn't really need to be the one to shoot her imagine how much better the scene would be if it went something like this. The scene would play out how it does in the show already but instead of having the moment where she shoots Laguerta have her slowly put her gun down and just walk out the shipping container while bawling her eyes and and repeatedly swearing (as Deb would) and then she hears Dexter's saw start going from inside the shipping container and she just completely loses it at that point realizing the gravity of the choice she just made

Been rewatching Dexter since new blood ended...just like every other fan.
Season 7 is awesome, the best since season 4, and possibly the last good season of the show.
Actually there are 11 great episodes and 1 that really drags the quality to good. That's episode 9, helter skelter. I mean, everyone starts acting dumb here. Dexter kills an assassin on the shooting range. Isaak, who is supposed to be the fucking Terminator, just throws his gun away to get gunned down easily by that Koshka dude who ran the strip club.
In my initial viewing, I did not like Hannah a lot but I now really like her S7 character. The idea that Dexter cannot kill someone who fits the code because he falls in love is actually interesting and well executed. I don't understand why so many people cannot stand Dexter falling for someone. I mean, the show, has repeatedly said that he isn't asexual or something, and Hannah is smoking hot!
Finally, this set up a ton of things for season 8, all of which conveniently went down the drain, as is so often the case with Dexter. I remember thinking Dexter killing Hannah's dad was going to be a pivotal moment and might lead to his eventual downfall as it was one of the first concious kills where the code wasn't met and Dexter did not show much remorse. Sad, that wasn't the case!
