Dexter faces off against The Trinity Killer in the most explosive season yet. Is Dexter Season 4 just one of the greatest seasons of Dexter or one of the greatest seasons of television ever?

Thanks for the review! Just wanted to let you know that the revival airs on November 7 :)
My favorite season finale in television history. Was absolutely shell shocked
So was I.
John Lithgow brought this show to a new level. He's always been a standout actor and exceeds expectations in everything he's been in but he plays one hell of a bone chilling bad guy. I absolutely adore him
There’s a lot of great guest performances, but his is so far above the others it’s really not even close
One of my favorite seasons of television ever. The Thanksgiving scene alone was one of the most tense, uncomfortable sequences I have ever witnessed. And that ending...I stared dumbfounded at the screen for almost a full minute when the credits rolled.
Something I've always noticed with this season is every kill done by Dexter seems to have a consequence. I don't know if it was meant that way or not. But Something bad always happens after every kill and I've always thought it was some kind of message. Might just be me though lol. Great review.
When Arthur snapped at the dinner table and said shut up c*nt then I was like holy fuck I didn't see that coming lol.
After seeing John Lithgow in movies such as “Blow Out”, Ricochet, Cliffhanger and Raising Cain, I definitely knew that he was going to be the next perfect adversary to Dexter, since his brother Brian.
John Lithgow was always great at playing very sinister villains.
My only problem with this season was the Batista Laguerta parts, their love life and marriage, i just didn't care about their relationship at all.
exactly, I was really surprised to hear Cody say that he liked that part, I couldn't stand it
@@kubahavelka9556 i was just rewatch it a few days ago and iam always skipped their part. Really2 unnecessary, batista & gianna was perfect
9:37 I always found Quinn's reasons for suspecting Dexter stupid. "He doesn't want anything to keep quiet about me taking money from a crime scene so there's something strange about him." At least with Doakes he could tell Dexter was off having seen killers like him in both the Special Forces and as a cop, found out Dexter knew that Brian had been the one to try to kill Batista and kept it from Miami Metro, Dexter getting excited at murder scenes and too into describing them, he looked into Dexter's past and found out about Harry's suicide and Matthews covering it up and so on.
Always seemed forced to me.
I love the bathroom scene in the Road Kill episode where Trinity explains his origin story in the bathroom with Dexter. Super creepy phenomenal acting by John Lithgow.
16:30 you didn’t mention the fact how ridiculous it was that Arthur managed to steal a visitors badge and then proceeded to look in the evidence room for a minute without ANYBODY saying anything but that could be a nitpick I don’t think so though because it’s a pretty important plot point
I often disagree with popular opinion but in this case I don't. This is one of my favourite seasons of any show and certainly my favourite of Dexter.
Hungry Man is one of my favorite episodes of TV, definitely my favorite of the whole show.
Just a creepy descent into the totally disturbed and messed up Mitchell family.
The ending payoff where everything goes to shit was just perfect acting from Hall and Lithgow.
I truly enjoyed this easy and it is probably my favorite of the series. I feel like 1, 2, 4, and 5 are the most solid and the ones I don't typically get tired of and can binge all the time. The end was unfortunately spoiled for me, but seeing my husband's face when we watched it was pretty fun, lol. We were lucky that we got into Dexter after season 5 so we were binging the summer before Season 6 started. We didn't have to wait, but I can imagine how agonizing that was. Also, gotta love that you are encouraging work truancy, haha. I do think my husband and I played hookie to finish this season if I'm not mistaken. Or I did. One of us for sure called out because we finished this at 3am. I remember that.
I just finished rewatching this season (after watching live back in the day) and my biggest “WTF Dexter” moment has to be the part in the finale where he finally gets Trinity, after taking that guy’s side-view mirror off… and instead of just driving Arthur to the kill-room using Arthur’s van… he deals with the cops. Idiotic, and Harry lets him know it. As a consequence, spoiler spoiler spoiler.
That said, the complete lapse of reason did help to illuminate and complement other bad decisions by Dexter, e.g. “that scene” in the New Blood finale. Dexter’s been a fuck-up since at least S3. S1 is the only one where he pulled it all off.
I don’t want to call it “idiot plot” when Dexter messes up, it’s not like what he’s doing is easy.
5:04 At first you think he's a guy obsessively compelled to re enact the death of his family then it later turns out that him wanting to kill himself wasn't guilt for his murders but self pity about being responsible for the deaths of his mother and sister and killing his abusive father. With the family man, deacon and home builder all being acts so no one will suspect him of being a serial killer.
16:59 Yeah I get Arthur lured him to the arcade by making Dexter think he was there to kidnap and bury another kid after Dexter saved the previous boy interrupting Arthur's cycle but Dexter not keeping an eye to see if anyone's following him made no sense.
Yeah.... that’s one of the things I thought was lazy writing. Dexter is so meticulous and methodical.....BUT all of a sudden he’s none of these. Doesn’t make sense that in earlier seasons he’d do his “homework”, bide his time, plan every move out and have multiple exits ready in case to bail, etc.
Also, the Dex has trouble with romantic relationships but all of a sudden becomes a total simp in the last season. I mean come on, man!
@@darkdemonqueen Didn't help that Arthur drove a big van that'd be easy to spot. And as for Hannah in the last 2 seasons she only existed because Scott Buck, the producer of Seasons 5-8 had a boner for her actress.
Always love the unique intros for these reviews. This one in particular made me crack up
Problem with shows like Dexter is there is always that one antagonist that comes along before the end of the show that none of the others will come close to measuring up to.
Cracked me up how throughout Season 8 we keep hearing Dexter monologue about Saxxon like he’s the most dangerous killer he ever faced 😂😂😂
Trinity would beat Saxon to death with a hammer without breaking a sweat. Daniel Vogel, Oliver Saxon whatever you want to call him was just a mama's boy who killed his brother to get attention from his mother, sawed people's brains to do the same as an adult then killed her when she chose Dexter over him.
This season was a really intense season from the jump since the killer was established. All around solid performances from most of the cast as well and the writing was also on point. The only other show that had as great as a season 4 if not better was breaking bad. But yes, this is my favorite season.
Awesome review! This was by far the best season for me . The ending when I first saw it ( 2020 lockdown ) left my mouth wide open and I was so happy I did not have to wait to see how that played out , because if I did …. I would be like you were , anxious 😬!!! Also happy to finally see this review I was waiting for a notification for it lol
Great review Cody! Dexter Season 4 is one of my favorites of all time in TV. John Lithgow was incredible!
Why John has never won an Oscar is beyond me. This was a great season.
Oscar for The movie, he win emmy and golden globe!
loved the intro cody! keep up the good work buddy! cant wait for dexter season 9. i recently met dexters dad over the weekend and asked him if he was gonna be in the new season and he said and i quote "Nope i dont think they could afford me"
The more Cody content, the better. Keep up the good work my dude
I wish they wouldn't have announced Jiohn coming back, that would have been a great surprise.
I like this season, but I think the first two seasons are overall the best. As good as season four is it’s pretty much all downhill afterwards.
Bro, that intro had me laughing for like a minute 😂 😂😂😂😂.
Love this show and your content, man. Keep it up 😎🤘
This is easily dexter best season and one of the best seasons of tv. The way it explored how dexter addiction to killing will be his down fall. Trinity being the dark mirror of dexter. The ending with Rita dying was a tragic way to end the season.
My man, I have to agree I LOVE John Lithgow... coming up as a kid I watched 3rd Rock From The Sun, he was so funny in that (and shrek)! To see the change in roles in this... and how well he did 👌 chef kiss from me 💋 versatile actor and I was impressed.
Great review Cody! Looking forward to all of these! I hope you slightly change your opinion on season Eight! I'm glad you mentioned the Cop chick episode, as that's one of my favorites!
Man the opening has the bathroom scene from the Shining written all over it.
Best season, best bad guy, best cliffhanger EVER!!!
Funny you mention Cliffhanger because John plays an amazing bad guy in that flick too 😁
I saw cast away on the go out and buy it part
Great review. Excited Dexter is coming back. I only watched through season 6 when they were on Netflix, trying to decide if I should watch 7 &8.
Look forward to the rest of your Dexter reviews!
7 is actually really good
John Lithgow was incredible in this, easily the best season.
I watched all of Dexter years ago. It crazy that I forgot about this show. I think I’ll rewatch it after I catch up with some other shows I left behind.
Awesome review and best opening ever! That look had me rolling 🤣
Watched it all for the first time this month. How did I wait so long to see this amazing show! Was totally not expecting the ending of this season.
Great review Cody!!
Also loved that X Files reference you had in there. I’d love to see your thoughts on that show sometime in future videos. :)
While this is the best season of dexter, I have to say much like you I can't believe that Dexter allowed himself to be followed and not have it for a purpose of some kind. And the deb issues well for me they get worse over time but in season 4 least of my issues.
And that ending is cheif's kiss!
Great vid Cody definitely my favorite season by far season 4 and 2 and my favorite 2 season. Currently watching season 6 now forgot Tom Hanks son was in season 6.
I’m still shocked from the end of season 4 which I watched a while ago. Will start season 5 soon
Definitely one of the greatest tv seasons in tv history season 4 of “Dexter”
John Lithgow as Trinity -Arthur Miller was a master stroke having him as the villain, he was superb in movies like “Blow out” “Raising in Cain” & “Cliffhanger” as the bad guy but in “Dexter” he was the devil in disguise.
My all fav scene in the series “Hello Dexter Morgan” in the police station, John Lithgow was made to look 8 ft tall & a beast, DAMN great scene & just when things were back to normal in Dexter’s life towards the end of the season, then the final scene WTF 😳😱🤬
Excellent review! This is really a great season because of John Lithgow.... wouldn’t be the same with anyone else!
I’m interested to see what you thought of the disaster that was the very last season. 🤨😎
Cody your intros are all awsome
The perfect ending of this season would have been if Dexter let Trinity go at the end, then there's the big reveal after that.
Loved Cast Away too.
Do not get those scratch-it posters, they're awful. I spent like $45 on one, and theres just typos all over the place, some of the movie posters were different than the names that they said before it was scratched, they use wrong movie symbols on certain films.
For the Superman movies, the scratch poster says "1978, 2003, 2003, 2003, 2003, 2003." Not only were 5 Superman movies not released in 2003, but exactly 0 Superman movies were released in 2003. And that's just for one of the movies on the poster.
These posters are awful. Not your fault, Cody, but people should not spend money on these
Probably the best season, though there are too many silly, far-fetched bits in it. The ending is strong, and the tension intense, especially in the last 3 episodes.
Good job I enjoy your dexter reviews man
Totally the best season, just rewatched… they should’ve ended it here, even tho season 5 was good, I liked season 5 but omg when I saw the finale when it aired, I was shocked and gutted!!
November 7th.
The Avenging Angel returns!
The GOATED season of Dexter.
I really liked Quinn here. Set up an interesting dynamic for season 5 that... Nearly worked. Just so close.
Before I read these comments and get spoilers...I watched seasons 1-5 a few years ago. Watched the movie skyline and was like who is that guy I know I love him and looked it up was batista. Thought to myself omg I forgot I never finished dexter so I started back at season 4 to get back into it and finish it. Had to watch your vids to refresh my memory about seasons 1-3 to save me some time. Long live dex.
And deb.
When I saw Rita in that bathtub, it made me sick to my stomach. That nasty old man got in the bath with her 😢
The X-Files term was actually called “Monster of the Week” episodes, and the X-Files being a supernatural show, the term works.
But since Dexter deals exclusively with human monsters, probably “Freak of the Week” is the better phrasing for this show.
Like smallville
The last GREAT Dexter season! After this I felt a decline in quality. Hoping that the new one is amazing!
I've been wanting this review for a long time
This was peak Dexter nothing topped this season John Lithgow was amazing
Cody, you should see John Lithgow's performance in Twilight Zone: The Movie(1983). His segment is the best part of the film.
Replacing Doaks with another guy that suspects Dexter was overkill imo. Amazing season though.
video idea: Top 10/15 movie opening scenes
new sub here. cant wait for the other seasons!
After rewatching the series, Season 3 is by far the best season.
This is definitely my favorite season of dexter and one of the best seasons of tv. Trinity is my favorite villain of the series.
Not gonna lie. I rooted out loud at that season finale. It was so satisfying
I'm gonna say it...I think season 4 is kind of over-rated. I like season 5 better.
For one think, I think Trinity's daughter is a plot contrivance that does not work.
- Where does she come from? Was Trinity a family man once before? Why does he hate her so much? She is an aspect of Trinity's personality that is never explained and just comes out of no where.
- Why does she kill Lundy? There are 1,000s of women with daddy issues that don't try to get attention by killing someone. It makes no sense.
Arthur mentions to Dexter that before he met and married Sally he was with a woman called Lorraine Hill who he had Christine with but the relationship fell apart. I think he hated her because her existence threatened the "perfect family man" cover he had to hide him being a serial killer. And she killed Lundy because she was afraid he was getting too close to realising Arthur was Trinity.
@@Xehanort10 I have watched the series twice and somehow I missed that bit of information both times. Thanks. Yeah...I never understood where Christine came from and why. That makes more sense.
Before this i only knew John as Dick from 3rd rock from the sun. Quite a different character!!! I had to look him up and watch more
Fun Fact: in the first Dexter book, Brian killed Laguerta. Also in the books Rita doesn't die until way later like in the 7th book. After the first season, (which was similar to the fist book)the show stopped following the books and went in its own completely different direction. I recommend reading all 8 Dexter books.
Way to give the spoiler that Cody was trying to avoid...
@@LilMslDev He mistaked Rita for Debra just like Cody did in the video
I've shown this season to people who hate thrillers an they all said it's one of the best things I've shown them.
Did those people watch seasons 1-3?
@@oliverlinke6323 Some saw and liked Season 1. I didn't bother showing them 2 and 3. It's not like you're missing out on much by skipping them.
@@sparkzmentalz2 Season 2 was fantastic in my opinion, not as amazing as season 1 though
@@oliverlinke6323 I always felt Season 2 should have been the series finale instead of what we ended up getting but I agree it was a good season.
@@sparkzmentalz2 I haven't seen past s4 so I wouldn't know but that would've mean we wouldn't have gotten S4. I just think S3 shouldn't have been a thing and they could have used the Miguel story line somewhere else as a side story. I do get though how the Bayharbour butcher plot seemed more like a final season thing
Hey, i watch your videos from Germany. Love your rewies. I've just seen 3 Videos from you and i love it. Best wishes. 🎉
"Now It's Over"
Can't wait
For some reason I didn't like season 3, but then... THIS ONE was my absolute favorite.
Nobody liked season 3
@@oliverlinke6323I loved it
@@panter8895 That’s good but you’ve got an awful taste, no offence lol
@@oliverlinke6323 How is season 3 bad?
Finished the series. S1-5 are exhilarating masterpieces. S6-8 can piss on my grave.
S1 2 3 4 6 and S5 7 8 are bad
LOL love that intro
Pretty sure Trinity is the only killer thatbhas his own original theme music always make this comparison if dexter is batman Trinity is his Joker
Hello...Dexter Morgan. :)
This was the final season Laguerta was sympathetic imo . From S5 onwards it’s like the writers just stopped trying to humanize her.
Agreed
Dexter: New Blood is coming out in November and I’m excited to see it
Dexter season 9 starts November 7th.
November 7th the new season starts.
You know its a damn good season when over half of the video is done before he gets to the negatives.
Nice review. While this is arguably the best season overall, I'm more intrigued by the ideas of some of the lesser-rated and disastrously executed seasons like 6 and 8.
Lord Farquad was a bad bad man!😂
Some people may have died but it was a sacrifice he was willing to make.
Best season of Dexter.
Wicked video 🤘
My favorite season with the most messed up finale! This was the height of the show for me. The other seasons went downhill after this one
If Dexter ended at season 5 with a manhunt storyine it wouldve been seen as one of the best shows ever. Ill never forgive Scott Buck for what he did to the show.
@@ARBLACKx 5 should have been about the end of 4 causing a chain of events that led to Dexter being found out as the real Bay Harbour Butcher and Doakes's name being cleared. Instead we only got an episode of the fallout then Dexter thinking helping Lumen kill Jordan Chase's rape gang would somehow make up for it when it wouldn't.
When do you see Malignant?
If you can, just let Lindsey know we are pulling for her
Definitely the best season for me!
Yes
I did enjoy that jokey tired intro they did for episode one, though I'm glad it was just a one off.
i was pissed off about the ending
Still in the easy portion of the rewatch lmao I flew through 1-5 but man it's a slow crawl to finish season 6 I've been on it for at least a month maybe longer and I got 8 ep to go worst season only saving grace is Deb walks in on him to end the season lmao
Season 6 and 8 make a rewatch a lot harder than it should be lmao
Clancy will be the same level with john , remember my comment...
The best season
Yes, its an amazing season but I have to say I could not stand that LaGuerta/Angel subplot, every scene took me out of the episode
