On rewatch the opening episode is always a little funny with Laguerta hitting on Dexter.. they don’t take it much further and knowing where it ends up always feels odd to me lol
I think that was a leftover from Jeff Lindsay's original Darkly Dreaming Dexter book which the first season was partly based on. The later seasons did their own thing.

Xehanort10 season 7 brought back part of the first novel. But you’re right they did their own thing. The books are a whole new thing too. Lol they’re so different and I feel like the book series end is worse than the TV series end. Lol
@@seanyonthemic i respectfully disagree. The final book isn't what i wanted it to be, but the actual ending was beautifully written. That last chapter in particular is fantastic and the final sentence haunts me to this day. Whereas the final chapter of the show is just terrible writing.

The first 4 seasons of dexter are absolutely amazing, very different from the the books but not in a bad way.
Losing the actual supernatural nature of the "Dark Passenger" was a good idea.

That said, absolute trash plot explanation to ruin something psychological.

@@RedwoodTheElf The show makes more sense if you interpret Dexter as talking to ghost throughout the series, Harry, Brian, Deb etc.

@@ABNRich86 I like how after Dexter sees the blood filled hotel room Brian set up to remind him of their mother's murder Doakes says "Something finally got to you. I guess you're human after all."

Don't forget Lundy.. they shouldn't have killed him off. If anything Lundy should have been the one to find out Dex was the Bay Harbor Butcher instead of Laguerta
Just re-watched the first four seasons and I think what I love most is the dark comedy, which is something that seemed to be sorely missing from the latter seasons. It's pretty impressive how this show is able to switch gears from hilarious to dramatic to terrifying in only a few seconds.
Should I stop after 4 seasons or keep going?
One of the main differences from the books to show is that Dexter actually trains Astor and Cody to also be killers. They both display the tendencies that Dexter did that set him on his path. Cody is more the killer and Astor is his cover.
Also in the books Laguerta dies in the first book, unlike the show where she dies in one of the final seasons.
The first time i experienced Dexter, I couldn't keep up with the story line in Season 1 until things connected later on in the show. I wish season 1 was spread across 18 or so episodes to soak in the "past" of Dexter

Dexter never lost his cool in first season even after so much mocking by doakes. He was emotionless and faking everything but you can see his character became more vulnerable in later seasons.
Other than him whamming Paul with the frying pan lmao.

The fourth season should be a blast because of the story alone. The whole "urban legend or not" about the big bad of the season. Dexter, Monk and Psych still get my love to this day. Just great shows!

Season 4 of Dexter, just like Season 4 of The Wire, is one of the best seasons of television of all damn time.
Season 6 qas the worst, even 5 was bearable , they really stretched the DDk storyline

One of my favorite shows...for the first four seasons. I remember really being blown away when I first watched Season 1 with its unique protagonist and numerous twists. In its prime, Dexter truly was one of the most remarkable shows on TV.

@@KiDSZN keep going 5 is ok 7 is great many intricacies and people don't like of course but it's dif 5 on was Scott buck and 5 was ok 6 drew me away a bit from religion being used but if you need a reason why it could very much be huh it's time for him to question his end as it's near fo just realize it's all bullshit man made bullshit And the killer is a maniac but it plays well except the Nebraska show that was a good chance of a weekly change up and it was good he took brother sams ideas and leaves someone else behind to confirm a way to redeem their own . mistakes. but 6 to me was meh 7 good 8 good except the ending which could have been worse we got a new blood out of it but hey we got a bad ending whatever we got to see mch ok and as for the season 9 we for more mch at least
My favorite and in my opinion the best season. I got hooked pretty immediately after watching the first two to four episodes. The introduction of Dexter and all the other characters, the flashbacks, the plot, the Ice Truck Killer, the showcasing of the setting Miami done beautifully etc. This season will always be my favorite. I'm excited for the reboot.
After the first episode I was hooked too. One of my favorite aspects of the show is dexter’s Inter dialogue.With the simplicity of season one his Internal commentary was really a major part of the show. I also enjoyed the vulnerability and innocence of Deb and Rita in the first season. 1 and 2 are by far my favorite seasons.
S1 is one of my favorite seasons of the whole show ❤
Shame that Michael C Hall haven’t been in a lot of stuff since Dexter because he’s really good actor
He’s been focused on Broadway
There are some actors that after playing a role, you just don’t see the actor anymore, every time you see them, you see the character.
Like for me there is no Michael C Hall. There’s only Dexter!
Another one for me is Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. Or Bryan Cranston as Walter White.
In 2016, I've been to theatre at London where I briefly lived, and there played Michael C Hall 😍😍💗

My favourite tv show drama character!! Love this show so much shame later seasons didn't live up to the hype of the first half. But still one of the best shows of the 2000s!! Finally someone reviews the show!!

See I do agree that theres a big step off after the first 4, BUUUT I dont think season 5 is all that bad at all and actually a strong season in many ways it just had the horrible task of following up season 4 which was always gonna be hard to do, season 6 I thought was a weak season... 7 was a step in the right direction again (although still flawed) and then season 8 was awful.
I liked them all (except the last one) but I agree the first 4 are the best

Loved this review and that you talked about how the people he kills every week helps him with whatever he is dealing with in his personal life. I feel this theme is bigger in the series as each big killer shows him a different path he could have gone down. The ice trucker killer is who he would have been without Harry's code.
One of my favorite seasons of any show ever. Other seasons of Dexter were good but never as good as the first. Also well done on the intro
IMO they should have kept Dexter emotionally empty. Making his character more human and emotional in later seasons watered him down.
I so agreed with this. He became so ordinarily boring in the later seasons. It was fun to see him try to look normal. That was the best part.
I hear you but then there’d be far less character development and Michael C Hall was fascinating with it.
@@lilyflower5895 Later on they forgot he was supposed to be a morally ambiguous character and started portraying him as an out and out hero even though that was never Dexter's character.
@@Xehanort10 Plus he became a sex machine screwing everything that moved. He was so easily seduced that he came across as weak. The entire relationship with Hanna was idiotic. She legit deserved to be killed on his table.

I loved this season so much, I normally see the first 3 episodes of a tv show before making the decision to keep going or nah and by the time the first episode played! 😱 I got hooked, I gotta give thanks to my wife for introducing me to this great show!
I heard it supposed be season 9 back in November 2018.I miss this show much it’s been six years since the show ended Michael C Hall was the perfect choice for the role.
My husband suggested this after hearing about it from work. We started the first season and the moment we saw the body in the pool drained dry...we were in. We were in DEEP. We binged the next four seasons in maybe 3 to 4 weeks and were ready to go when Season 5 started on time. I will still watch this show at least once a year. Its just so damn good and no matter how many times I watch it, I never get bored. Season 1 my second favorite season. Yes second. We could probably guess what season is going to be first.

Yes. A much easier show than Breaking Bad for myself to get into. Beware the final season. But i look forward to this series quite a bit.

Dexter is my favorite tv series of all time, it was so good. Although I had problems with the ending of the series finale. For those who haven't watched Dexter it is available to watch on Netflix right now!! Like Cody said go watch it!!

They shouldn’t have killed Brian so soon. They should’ve let him escape in season 1. He was the only character bar Debra that could seriously affect Dexter’s psyche.
I remember when I first watched Dexter I started the pilot at like 10 pm or something and I was so hooked I couldn't stop watching. I watched the entire first season into the next morning
YES!!!...this is the kinda content we need , great idea Cody, Dexter was my fave show when it was airing, (Shame about that final season)
Also, dexter is probably is in top 5 - if not in top 3 :) I did not watch it for a long time. Jennifer Carpenter’s performance in the penultimate season was some of the best acting I’ve seen - ever.
Deb was honestly the first character I ever truly related to. The mouth of a sailor mixed with serious men issues. Glad I waited to watch this until there were a couple more videos up.
I never thought Dexter reached the heights of season one for the remainder of the show. 😬 But man is season one a treat!

Dexter doesn't actually start talking to Harry until season 3. I know, shocked me on my rewatch. I thought it was always there, but nope. Not until Finding Freebo.
With the announcement of dexter returning I decided to check out the show. Finished season 1 today and loved it. Gonna binge the rest over the next few weeks. I kinda did see the reveal of the ice truck killer coming but it was still surprising.
I was hooked from the get go. Love Miami as a character, the soundtrack, and of course, Dexter's VO...soooo good

I loved Dexter!! Such a good show! I was hooked after the Pilot. Season 4 is amazing, and I think the best season. "Hello, Dexter Morgan" is a great episode. I hated the series finale though. Hated it w/a passion. Can't wait to hear what you thought of it.
This might be controversial but season 1 of Dexter is the best season. I love it. I always rewatch it once or so a year cuz I like it that much(the whole show too).

@templarroystonofvasey I think it's the best because it's really encapsulating of the narrative that he's a monster. He enjoys making bad people suffer then in the later seasons they try to give him a conscious and suddenly give him emotions. Idk it just didn't work for me plus they totally changed the style/vibe of how they filmed him and his dark passenger during the kills.
@@AnimeBae370Gotta say I really enjoyed the concept of the Dark passenger as well. It's clearer in the Dexter books this is a demonic entity. I do remember later seasons more and more logic seemed to get thrown out the window. I didn't really pick-up on Dexter developing more emotionally. I'll look out for it during the next re-watch. Thnx.

Having watched the first 4 seasons many times, season 1 is the best. All the flashbacks, Harry's code, discovery and learning about why Dexter is the way he is was awesome. Then you step back and think "f-me, why the hell am I empathising and rooting for a serial killer".
Seems to me as each season progresses, drama is given more and more priority along with ever increasing "convenient cheese" so Dexter continues to "get away with it", through sheer stupidity of others and blind luck, rather than the cold, calculating and matriculate planning that allowed Dexter to do what he does undetected.
I'm sure most will place a balance of drama, "convenient cheese" and calculated killer (or lack there of) by giving Season 4 the biggest thumbs up, just I can't forgive the cheese because I just don't rate the drama as much as others do.
Dexter is amazing! Love the show! Have the theme as my ringtone haha. You may also like the show Barry has similar feel

Just watched dexter for the first time about a year ago and the first 4 seasons blew my mind it was so good then ehh still one of my favorites I’ve seen tho
On a rewatch of the season the one thing I will say about it is how the fuck could deb not notice the giant freezer in her boyfriend's apartment. Probably plenty of explanations for it (maybe) but that fact that they didnt even mention it was super weird on a rewatch.

CODY! That opening was AWESOME! One of my favorite shows, if you a reader check out the books they're great also.
My only complaint with Season 1 was that I wish there was one entire episode that focused mainly on Dexter and Brian talking to each other. There are 2 very short scenes together. When he rescues Deb, and when he kills Brian.
I probably need to watch this series since you describing real well. FUN FACTS: James Remar who played as Dexter adopted father also playing in DC Hit Popular show Black Lightning as well!!
Seasons 1,2 and 4 are the best, but season 5 is very under appreciated.

Great review (although I was surprised you didn't talk more about Doakes, IMHO he was absolutely one of the best characters of the entire show and they really dropped the ball only having him for the first 2 seasons, that storyline could've easily been stretched out for more seasons). But the main thing I wanted to say was I have to disagree with your saying that if someone isn't into it after the first episode that it's not for them. I watched the pilot years ago with my now ex and wasn't into it at all. But I loved Michael C. Hall so much from Six Feet Under (have you seen that? One of the best shows of all time if not the best IMO) that I decided to give it another try years later and for me it took until the 3rd episode to get hooked but once I was there was no going back and now it's absolutely one of my favorite shows of all time. I'm not going to go on again about how excited I am about it returning but I'm SO freaking excited it's ridiculous, Christmas came early this year!!! 😃
Ohh my gods....That intro was fucking AWESOME!!!!!! I love love LOVE Dexter so damn much. One of my favorite TV Shows and I'm one of them that actually liked every single Season. Michael C. Hall was the perfect Dexter and I'm really really looking forward to the new Season!!

I don't commit the series like I just to. Watch them for a bit then stop and get back to them at a later time but this was one of a few I had to watch when each new episode came out. Will have to revisit it soon now I know it's on Netflix

Dexter is awesome. If you have the time it’s very easy to get into, I think I binge watch all the seasons with a couple weeks. I did that with The Strain too but I think the strain really depends on your taste. The writing on Dexter is top notch.
