  • Our favorite serial killer is back and now HE is the one being hunted. Season 2 of Dexter explodes into a tense and crazy game of cat and mouse with some old demons and sexual exploits mixed in. Does Season 2 measure up to the greatness we now expect?

Doakes was way too good of a character to have him killed off so early.

If they'd had the guts to have Dexter get caught it should have either been Doakes or Deb who did it. I liked the similarities between Dexter and Doakes like how they were both traumatised by things that happened to them, Dexter by his mother's murder and Doakes by his dad's abuse and the things he'd seen and done in the Special Forces. Doakes was hinted to have killing urges similar to Dexter's and satisfied them by luring evil people into situations where he'd have to kill them in self defence. He saw Dexter had the same darkness in him he himself did and had probably seen killers like Dexter put on nice guy acts in both the SF and the police force. Great character and he ended up being replaced by the generic Quinn.

Doakes shouldve stayed on the show until the end and they shouldve slowly built up his suspicions of Dexter. And then in the final season Doakes finally figures him out and goes after him

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 3 года назад

@Inspire VR In the book doesn't he get kidnapped by a former member of his unit and gets half his body parts chopped off? And in the books he's called Albert Doakes instead of James.

    • @bowlingbbabe

It couldn't go any other way. He was a top notch detective and Dexter doesn't go after the good so it was good he went out as a hero and kept the integrity of the character. Doakes would have had to lose his integrity or Dexter would have had to violate his rules so I'm glad they kept true to the characters but yes, he was a strong character, and sad to see him leave!

11:42 A great Lundy and Laguerta scene is when Laguerta says she has some evidence that proves Doakes isn't the Bay Harbour Butcher which was that Doakes and Laguerta were on a sting at the time one of the murders was happening. But Lundy had to ignore it because Maria didn't report a phone call from Doakes after he got Dexter's blood slides analysed in Haiti. Lundy goes "I can and I will ignore it because you gave me no choice lady. Your credibility was compromised the minute you failed to report a phone call from the subject of a goddamn FBI manhunt. In trying to protect your friend you blew the best shot we had at bringing him in from the cold."

I like like when Doakes finds Dexter in the swamp and when he's in the cage, his motivation is bringing Dexter in. He doesn't want to kill him. I also got the sense that he wanted to bring him in out of a sense of justice, not to get any glory. It reframed my view of Doakes. I hate that they killed him, but massive explosion was probably a death that fit Doakes' character.

ngl , The part about Rita isn't valid. She let felt guilty for Paul's death , which led to her asking Dexter about hitting Paul. Also , it makes sense to think that Dexter might me addicted , since it's not really normal to have drugs in case of anything.
She doesn't know that Dexter isn't actually addicted, so ofc she will try to keep him at a rehab.
When she leaves him , it's pretty understandable. She literally hears about Dexter staying in a motel with Lila. Ofc she will think he cheated , since she was already suspicious of her. Also , she doesn't dump him instantly. She was angry in the moment, and later let's Dexter explain what happend. She only leaves him when he confeses that he slept with Lila, something that's Dexter's fault , not hers.
The whole section about Rita isn't really valid criticism, and everything that she does makes sense when you take in consideration that she has no ideea about Dexter's real secret

One thing I really liked about Lundy is the contrast he has compared to Dexter. Lundy is a lot like Dexter and can see the evil in others and think like a serial killer but he says he gets his energy from a peaceful place rather than a dark place like Dexter. He loves to appreciate the simple moments and find peace where he can because he knows the world can often be dark especially in his profession. I also think he does that so he doesn't become dark himself like Dexter and others.

Lumen was decent, but I wouldn’t say his best Love interests, there are a lot of issues I take with the story of Lumen and season 5 in general. Like how the existence of Lumen was temporary and there was a lack of permanent effects in the following seasons. Like the way she took the way out in the end didn’t make sense for me at all. Or like how we never saw her reaction to Dexter cutting people into pieces after killing them, which was a huge part of Dexter’s life and the reason his father killed himself. And we know for a fact Lumen knew about it cause they threw bodies out in the ocean together but for some reason they decided to skip over that.

They gave Quinn the stupidest reasons to suspect Dexter ever. Just because Dexter didn't want to take a bribe to keep quiet about Quinn stealing evidence from a crime scene Quinn immediately suspected him of being a serial killer. And at the beginning of Season 5 he wanted to believe Dexter had killed Rita for kissing Elliot just because he didn't like him.

Here's a quick idea for a more elegant story structure for Dexter:
    1. Season 1 - mostly the same but Brian Moser survives and disappears
    2. Season 3 - have Brian somehow be involved with the whole Prado conspiracy and find a way to end the Paul sub-plot in a more satisfying manner.
    3. Season 4 - mostly the same but Lundy is introduced here instead of being killed off.
    4. Season 2 - Lundy returns, the hunt for the Butcher happens, Dexter is exposed in the finale.
    5. Original season with Dexter on the run, all the series-long character arcs coming to a close, Lundy & Brian dying, etc.

Rita only confronted Dexter about the shoe one time.. Pretty calmly actually.. And considering all the passes she gives Dexter on his behavior she's one of the least "bitchy" TV wives I've seen. The only thing wrong with her character this season was her illogical assumption that Dexter was on heroin and Dexter letting her get away with that assumption.
    A) Dexter would have the knowledge to make Paul OD due to his job, just because he specialized in blood splatter doesn't mean that he wouldn't have additional medical knowledge from school or just from being on the job. It's at least reasonable for her to believe it if Dexter had used that as an excuse.
    B) For someone who later chides Dexter on not getting his NA chip, citing the fact that she lived with an addict, she apparently has little knowledge of what a heroin addict is actually like - since Dexter hasn't exhibited any of the symptoms of one.

    • @dashriprock8596

This was a pretty stupid scene. Rita questions Dex about his involvement in Paul's predicament. She finds out that Dex framed Paul and indirectly is responsible for his death. You'd think this would give her pause but we never see her react to this realization because she goes off on this "you're an addict" obsession. The whole Paul thing is suddenly a non-issue.

@@GarryWilliams555 Season 3 is decent but my biggest gripe with it is how little long-term effect it had on the show. Pretty much the biggest thing that happened was that Dexter got married. That's it. Everything else was self-contained.

I am just watching dexter for the first time. Loved season 1 and really liked season 2. I honestly thought most of the fans would hate Lila, but for sure that explosive ending turned me around on her a bit. I actually dug the Deb and Lundy fling, it made perfect sense with her daddy issues and I knew it wouldn’t go beyond this season (or at least I think, haven’t started season 3 yet). Overall I’d give season 1 9/10 and season 2 8.5/10 and the ending was the best part, RIP Doakes

This story happened too soon, it should've happened in Season 5 or 6. And it should've been the penultimate season before the manhunt season everyone wanted.

This season was a good season but I had a couple of drawbacks that drag it out on rewatch. I love the entire thing with Doakes. I love the tension they build, I love the swap at the end where Dexter spins it to frame him. I remember getting so excited when I realized how this was going to play out, but will agree that it was cut too short. He was a character I loved to hate. I 100% agree with you in that this storyline would've been amazing for season 8.
I actually enjoyed Frank Lundy and Deb. I thought they were fun. I enjoyed him as a character and loved when he came back and his character was so strong you really felt his presence long after he was gone from the show. Lila and Rita...I could've gone without that entire storyline. Well acted and I enjoyed the part Lila played in the finale with Doakes, but the family drama, I didn't need that.

There are a lot of negatives in season 2
1.why was doakes not secretly following Dexter.? He lets Dexter know he’s following him. Even giving him a nod at the bowling alley. Why would he think Dexter would do anything illegal if he knew he was being followed?
2.)too much plot armor in the later episodes to help dexter(doakes walking out of the interview with Lundy, doakes for some reason going to Haiti just so he can look guilty and leaving the blood slides in his trunk)
3.doakes didn’t even own a boat so why was he a suspect?
4.)why did no one look at the paranoid neighbors logs and videos? They would have known doakes wasn’t even in Miami when the murdered were occurring
5.why didn’t doakes shoot Dexter in the leg and arrest him. Hard to believe doakes winds up in a cage when he has a gun on Dexter and had him cuffed
    6. No law enforcement looked into who owned the cabin or who rented the cabin until laguerta in season 7.

Love the review man! I feel like they didn’t close up a lot of plot holes in season 2.. such as does Doakes even have a boat.. or a boat in that marina? Sure he has special ops training but would he have done it with all the plastic wrap, scotch tape, and as maticulously OCD clean as dexter. All of his kills in the season were out in the open with a gun. I feel like Doakes was a terrible fit for the butcher profile. It seemed like the police were so easy to assume it was SGT Doakes and run with it even when it was very obviously not him. But overall loved this season definitely should have been the finale. Doakes is one of my favorite characters! Sad to see him die so early.

Same. read my comment to see why i agree with you , but for short : When you take in consideration her experience with Paul , and the fact that she doesn't know about Dexter's secret , everything she does in season 2 makes perfect sense. It's a lil annoying when Dexter doesn't wanna go to the rehab , and she threatens to break up , but it makes sense , since she most likely tried to make sure that he doesn't end up like Paul

    1) I agree that Doakes's story was cut short and Lila was an ex machina solution.
    2) Rita was an unreasonable bitch.
    3) I actually liked Deb's and Lundy's relationship. I felt they played off each other and contrasted each other well.
    4) The BHB plot should have been the final season.

I loved Lundy never felt bothered with his relationship with Debra. Mostly because I couldn't give the slightest fuck about age difference as long as they're both at least 18 I'm good. My parents are 17 years apart my aunt and uncle about 30 and he was her HS chemistry teacher so 90 times creepier than quirky Lundy. Does he give anyone else Jordan Peterson vibes? Cause I just noticed that

Fan fiction concept: it's 2013, and Dexter can't make it work as a lumberjack. Eventually he moves to Texas, Travis County Texas that is. He falsifies his identification; he has a new legal name, with a new list of credentials under his belt. He joins the Travis County police department as a forensic scientist; he quickly becomes obsessed with his newest target. Find and kill Thomas Hewitt.

I'm very surprised that no one has pointed out that the episodes are in the wrong order. For proof of this you only have to watch the highlights and see that Dexter confronts the killer of his mother and Lundy confronts him in a box car but this doesn't happen until the next episode or two. Also the order of Lundy's love affair with Debra is all screwed up because of this.

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 3 года назад

Yeah not only is he twice her age but Deb should have known that the relationship would only last as long as the Bay Harbour Butcher case did because of Lundy's job as an FBI profiler. But instead she gets pissed off and when Dexter wants the FBI guards off his back and says Lundy agrees she goes on about how Lundy just wants to solve the case and move on. Their relationship should have been a mentor and surrogate father and daughter type. Not romantic.

Fully agree that season 2 should have been the season finale. I think using the BHB as the impetus for a finale also would've kept the series on track. I'm a huge Dexter fan, but the series definitely meandered at times. I'm neither team Rita nor team Lila...they both bothered me tremendously, although there was a certain satisfaction in the last episode with Lila. I guess Lila was a good foil for Dexter and a character that you love to hate. I also agree with you about Doakes. He deserved more screen time and his early departure was a missed opportunity for further exploration of his relationship to Dexter.

Seems like a missed opportunity to talk about the themes of addiction and self destruction and how it relates to identity.
Dexter is basically debating going cold turkey with doakes, seeing his killing as an addiction, but ultimately succumbs because it's who he is. But it is affecting his life. He gets relief from it, but it is always screwing up the rest of his life, which he seems to become actually attached to, he loves Rita, not just for her to act as his cover for a normal guy. He loves the kids, he loves Deb, but the killings always inconvenience him and them and their relationship, exactly like a drug addiction. An addiction becomes a problem when it starts to affect the rest of your life. His sponsor obviously fails him because of her addiction to attention, but she helps him see that his addiction is just that, and also that it's a part of him.

I found the scene where Doakes almost got through to Dexter pretty sad. The fact that when Doakes told him to turn himself in Dexter just said "Rule number 1. Don't get caught" shows that the Code is basically brainwashing that Harry drilled into Dexter and that he's spent so long living by it he can't think to do anything else.
