    Julie Benz (Dexter, Hawaii Five-0) joins us to talk about everything from issues with panic attacks and infertility to being surprisingly killed off of her dream role on the hit show Dexter after 4 years. Julie was absolutely amazing this week and opened up about how previous experiences with being left in the shadows and dealing with rejection fueled her fire to continue pursuing a successful career in acting. We also talk about what it’s like dating as we get older, Julie’s former life as a groomed child ice skater, and realizing that our work and roles don’t define who we are as people.

      It was the best story arc and the writers for season 5 had huge shoes to fill and that’s why season 5 gets so much hate but I think season 5 was the epilogue for dexter and the aftermath of Trinity……..dexter should have ended at season 5 or they should have scrapped the ideas for season 6 and make the season 7 story arc where in the first episode she finds out he’s a serial killer by finding the blood slides……..and the series finale should have been when leaguers is murdered and then he dex and deb cover it up and then go into work like it’s a normal day

    It's easy to say 'They shouldn't have killed off Rita!' if she was your favourite character or if you think the show became shit after season 4, but there's no question that the decision to kill off such an important character, and in that way (bathtub, killed by Trinity) was creatively genius, and it really put the finishing touches on what was arguably the best season of the show. For the first time, Dexter actually lost. Yes, he killed Trinity, but he still lost.

While I haven't seen everything she's ever been in, her role as Rita on Dexter is perhaps my favorite of all her characters and her best work. More so than Darla on Buffy and Angel, better than her work on Desperate Housewives, No Ordinary Family, Defiance and Rambo. Like a little angel on his should. Rita and Harry Morgan could even have been competing view points struggling to guide Dexter down the right path. Rita's angel would be more kind, loving and forgiving, whereas Harry's character would continue to play the same role giving Dexter the advice he needs to hide his true nature and cover his tracks. It's amazing she was only in Buffy for like the first 7 episodes and not even in all of those, but still ends up being one of the most significant characters in the whole story of both shows. Angel is my fav show, even over Dexter, but i would consider the acting as "serviceable" not exactly the best, but Julie as Darla is an exception there, I always believed her acting like it was a real person, and her character was twisted and had one of the darkest story lines of the show, which is more impressive how she nailed it. • @Paglavc1
      @Paglavc1 3 года назад +7

      The fact that we all adored her is the best reason to say why they killed her off. Dexter is a monster, and his actions end up getting people destroyed. He was the one who wanted to get to know Trinity and with that caused him to retaliate. Rita is a collateral damage for his actions, just like his father was, just like Debra was, just like Doakes was, just like La Guerta was... The reason we feel so bad is because Rita was our surrogate, though which we could love Dexter, and because Dexter knew it was all his fault. He finally got a glimmer of light that might change him, when it all comes crashing down.

    I wonder if she takes any solace in the fact that for a lot of people her character dying was the end of the show. Probably not because it doesn't really change her situation, but I have to imagine that the showrunners probably regret killing her off at some point. All so he could have a new girlfriend each season. Have to believe they could have done better with the family dynamic. Owell

    What a great moment though. Very moving. Esp. since she had a huge impact on the show. It's one of the top 5/10 WTF moments in TV history.
    That's legend status.

    One of the few shows where you felt each important death was actually for the storyline and not just because there were behind the scenes issues with the actors, or they were just trying to revive the show. They were extremely purposeful, and so I never had an issue accepting them. As sad as I was to see important characters go, because the show and writing was so good, I was even MORE excited to see what came next. For me, that completely overshadowed the loss.

    Aww this broke my heart 🥺 I remember when I watched that episode & it got to her death, I was literally thinking it wasn't real and must be Dexter hallucinating or something. I just couldn't wrap my head around them actually killing off Rita. I would actually be very interested in their reasons for doing so because I personally thought it was a terrible decision & one of the reasons why the quality of the show started going downhill after S4. Also I couldn't stand ANY of his other love interests, they all just felt wrong to me. RiP Rita 😢

    Killing off Rita was so shocking and heartbreaking. She was the heart of the show.
    Julie did such a great job as Rita. She was so warm and loving, her tv death still gets me.
    I remember my bf was watching that episode (I had already seen it) and I didn’t say anything. He called me after the episode and the poor guy was so sad. Poor thing! He was like, “They killed Rita. Why? She was so sweet.” My poor guy. Took him a few days to recover.

    That was so perfect the way they did that. It was such a shock for all viewers and fans, and Dexter too. Came out of nowhere. The biggest emotional shock in a TV show that I can remember since the end of Mash, with Hawkeye in therap talking about the chicken on the bus. I never saw Dexter when it first aired, just binge watched the whole series over a very few days. They could have actually ended the series on that note, if you think about it, with Dexter appearing to have found some since of humanness, just to lose it all and seeing the futility of even trying after that and becoming even a more sick killer.

    It would've been cool if they had kept her on as one of Dexter's visions to balance out Harry. Like Harry was the devil over one shoulder telling Dexter that he needed to be alone and he needed to kill in his ritualistic way, and then Rita was the angel over his other shoulder telling him that he is a good person and that he can be better.

    She was probably one of my favorite characters on the show. I fell in love with her. I understand why they had to kill her but at the same time I wish they found a different way because even when I'm rewatching the show; I'm hoping it's not going to happen and it literally feels like I have a knot in my stomach every time I know it's coming. She was probably one of the best actors by far.

    Well, I guess one upside is that Rita's death has pretty much laid most of the groundwork and plot for the new Dexter season, bc without Rita dying, we wouldn't now have this entire story of Harrison's emerging dark passenger from being born in blood.
