Imagine how much better of an ending for the show it would have been if at 23:04 Deb shoots Dexter. It would have been the perfect ending -- the only person Dexter actually loved was Deb, and to keep her from going down the dark path he sacrifices himself to save her.
Dexter was ready to give up his life in the hands of Deb, the sister who he cares, just his affection of emotion is different from the norms,but Dexter do care for social interactions, that's why he always has Harry to be there as his imagination. Deb was put in a difficult situation on killing someone ready to give up their sins, vs lagurerta screaming at Deb to shoot at an unarmed man. Lagureta is still a police officer, she can't be a vigilante but she utilize all level 1 emotions to tell a sister to kill her brother instead of taking this into the police station. Which makes sense for Deb to shoot her at the heat of the moment. 😂

These scenes make it clear that there is no way that Matthews didn’t know the truth. It was right in front of him, and he chose self-preservation.
He clearly told Dexter and relayed the information about Maria hoping Dexter would plant evidence.

I like how Deb embraced Laguerta after shooting her, and then went to the beach wearing the same clothes without any blood on them.
Apparently Jennifer carpenter just did that it wasn't in the script but they liked it so kept it in maybe they didn't think about it that deeply

The First 4 Seasons I watched for Dexter, the last 4 seasons I watched for Debra
New Blood I thought the show was going to be a series until the last few minutes of the show.... I was SHOOK!

That final scene is well-acted but ridiculously contrived. They set it up as if Debra had to make the impossible choice between shooting Dexter or Laguerta, but she didn't have to do either of those things. If she wanted to stop Dexter, she could have just arrested him or let Laguerta do it, and instead of shooting Laguerta, she could have just left or, if she wanted to stay, at least let Dexter pull the trigger.

That's what I always wondered. She never needed to shoot Laguerta .
So, Dex makes it clear that he only tries to kill bad people, it's possible that Deb took the hit for him here in a symbolic way to preserve that image of him, else she would have to view him as a true killer and lose her brother in the process.
The cost is Debra's mental state, she also knew of his crimes so whether she shot her or let Dex kill her knowingly, wouldn't make a difference in her eyes.
If she would have never went there to be nosey the show would have turned out so Diff

Very lazy writing at the end there. Laguertz shoulda been the primary threat beyong S7 and into S8. There was no way Deb would shoot Dex, and especially not after he dropped the knife. LaGuerta could never be that dumb to try to tell Deb to "put him down."

I think this plot was one of the best of the show, with a ton of callbacks to previous seasons. Now, Laguerta has been great in her investigation just until the end when she made 2 mistakes, first going alone to the ship container, she knew Dexter killed or beat Doakes, she should have known better, specially since the first time they went there she was with a policeman. And second, even worse, she tried to force Deb to kill Dexter, that's terrible .. she should make him surrender and arrest him, that was the proper way to handle the situation. Get a confession, clear Doakes name.

I wish they kept the same writers throughout the whole show, the first 4 seasons are way better for a reason…
Nail in the coffin right here. This sealed off the impossibility of getting a satisfying end whatsoever. 2-for-1 deal on supporting characters! The show was spiraling and they needed to bring it back up, not make the main supporting character take an even deeper dive. Like, seriously, this just translates to losing Deb because mentally broken Deb isn't a good character and doesn't drive the plot forward.
LaGuerta was miscast, she was not a believable leader of a police force...and she was annoying. And her telling Deb to kill her own brother instead of arrest him further proves that she was just a bad character and a bad cop. Telling Deb that she was a good person and not like him but also telling her to kill him was the stupidest line of the episode.

The Nazi chief goes all alone in his car to arrest the Chief of the European Resistance who is about to leave Casablanca by plane, when he could have ordered EVERY cop in town to go get him and people and critics consider THAT writting A MASTERPIECE...! Maria was a terrible person. She had no qualms about using others to obtain her own ends and couldn't care about rhe consequences on her victims. She screwed up an op and the first thing she does is try to pin the failure on a rookie and when Debra refuses to play along she uses the rookie to pin it on her. She also blackmails Mathews to get his Capt, post and when she is tossed aside as Lt. she starts an affair with the BF of her replacement to turn her crazy while playing her best friend an confident. Utterly reckless and manipulative. No wonder Mathews couldn't think of anything better to honor her after her death than a park bench..!
And let's not forget Debra calling all the monsters Dexter had eliminated, His Victims.

These later seasons seriously annoyed me. The writing was terrible. So many fascinating directions the show could have taken and they chose the most boring and unrealistic path. And it got worse the closer it got to the end. We should have had a court drama for the last season with Dexter on trial and him being found innocent for protecting the city of Miama. He should have got a medal.
