Dexter was attracted to her, and she was attracted to him, before he realized she was bad and had to be eliminated. But by then it was too late, he fell in love with her and couldn't kill her, even when he gives her up for Deb.

I would have been happy with an ending where Dex leaves for Argentina with Hannah and Harrison. She was the woman who (in my opinion) really understood him best, she was a killer herself, she refused to actually kill Deb because she knew it would hurt Dexter more than anything else in the world), she had an amazing nurturing motherly nature with Harrison, and she was just the most beautiful woman Dexter ever dated throughout the series run. It would be an identical final shot to the ending scene in "The Shawkshank Redemption", where Dex would tie up the last of his loose ends in Miami, take a later flight to Argentina, and walk along the beach until meeting and reuniting with a barefooted Hannah and Harrison, walking through the warm water, until embracing in a big family style hug.
It would have also left the door open for the much-needed revivals of the characters for Paramount+ to kick off a new series to gain Paramount+ subscribers.
Too cliché. Cheap kind of love story. I’m glad the writers didn’t go that way.
The fact people think this should have been a romantic love story about serial killers is laughable... The character of Hannah destroyed every thing "Dexter" stood for. Which is why her character was widely HATED! Finally the writers/producers got it right and wrote her character off as being dead!!
Which is what she should have been the first time... DEAD... Writers pushing their character on the audience never works out for them nor the actor/actress involved... Especially when it causes the main characters to complete retcon themselves for one.... That was Dexter/Deb characters for Hannah.. A character that ended up being completely useless...
This would’ve been a great ending, even if cliche. Audiences are tired of having our expectations subverted. After 8 seasons, a happy ending is great payoff.

@@angelcitystudio EXACTLY. The tension between he and Rita in the first two seasons was because she wanted more from him emotionally and he simply didn't feel emotion. Then, fast-forward to seasons 6-8 and he turns into a lady's man somehow.
I'll never recover or forgive Dexter (show runners) for leaving Hannah like that with HIS child. It would never be perfect, but at least they would be together, 'couse what matters...
"So what's the alternative, Arthur? Leave? Disappear? Fake my own death and start over again?" Those words to the Trinity Killer from the Season 4 finale were a direct harbinger of the series finale.

She was hated because it made zero sense Dexter would let her go free.. Not once but two times. Especially after harming Deb.. Seeing he killed Brian because of harming Deb..
She wasn't fleshed out long enough for the majority of people to like her or sympathize with her... To most she was a knock off of Lumen.. And the audience loved Lumen after Rita died... So another chick introduced in the manner in which she was, was not well received... She didn't fit Dexter's character as a love interest and most felt it was destroying his character as a whole..
It was a forced love story that never needed to happen when it did and how it did..

Her appearance in the season was the same season where Dexter’s character REALLY went down the toilet IMO because of his decision to kill Laguerta. I understand wanting to introduce a new love interest but it wasn’t done well IMO.

Literally just started watching the show again, can't help it, so good!
Before Hannah, Dexter has always a main villain in every season. But Hannah is neither a friend nor a foe completely. I felt the lack of this feel during this season because the tension wasn’t rising, it was fluctuating. After a while it bothers me. And I must say main villain is so important in Dexter, it blows away the story like in 3rd,4th and 5th season but Hannah is not a villain and despite her acting skills her mimics are mostly frozen, I cann’t feel that deep relaitionship with Dexter.
This is the start of downhill journey of Dexter. Uncharacteristically letting a killer go.

Honestly prefer Deb x Dex love story over this… Anyone who thinks unrelated foster siblings with a messed up upbringing falling in love is “too twisted” for a show about a serial killer make me seriously wonder what show they think they’re watching. Foster siblings falling for each other in difficult living situations even happens in real life. 🤷🏻♀️ Certainly more believable and better TV than whatever Dexter and Hannah was…

This relationship literally ruined Dexter. They changed who he was. She was a murderer that was gonna get away with it and instead of killing her like he did with all his victims he decides to get with her and let her go. That was so not characteristic for him, they changed who Dexter was and that change made no sense, this is where it went downhill. If she was a man she would’ve been dead

I think Hannah is the only person who encourages Dexter with she saying “do what you gonna do”. When Dexter hears it, some kind of breaking happened and he thinks he found the “right person to live with”. This is MY theory.

I think the main problem with Hannah is she is neither friend nor foe for Dexter. The main villain is super important for Dexter because s/he raises the tension like Trinity Killer, Sgt Doakes or Jordan Chase. In Hannah’s season there is lack of this tension.

De-characterizing Dexter, changing him up after 7 seasons, making him do things so opposite of who he is, completely contradictory to his personality and believes. In the First Episode of the First Season of the show he says that if he had any feelings if he could love anyone that would be Debra. Therefore If someone tried to kill her he wouldn't sleep with that person let alone give his CHILD, who he cares about the most to. The same way he killed Trinity after he killed his wife, and how he killed the men that killed his mother, and the same way he killed Brian HIS OWN BROTHER because he ALSO tried to KILL DEBRA, do you see the pattern? Hannah should have been dead long ago, not just cause she tried to kill Debra(and would have if not for sheer luck), but because she is a psychotic killer that gets away with it. She MEETS the CODE perfectly. The biggest mistake of the show was Dexter not killing her on that table but sleeping with her instead. Wasn't it also established at the begging that he isn't a fan of sex anyway, he literally wanted to break up with Rita because she wanted to sleep with him. That Is where his character first starts being DE characterized. And the show starts going downhill, all the way to the dredged last season and new blood. Nothing good about Hannahs character either. She is a LIER, manipulator and a sociopath that goes around killing people just as soon as they inconvenience her even a little bit, no remorse, no code, no nothing, and no redeeming qualities. She is very much like Lila, who went to the extremes to try to make Dexter stay. The pathetic writing tricks to try and make us like her fooled only a few (such as urself). She should have been killed and therefore Dexter wouldn't be decharactirized, who knows, maybe Harrison wouldn't grow up to be what he is and ultimately kill his own father. No wander he did tho, because Of Hannah as his 'mother'. They did a whole 360 when it came to Dexters character. If Hannah was a man he would have killed her immediately, Debras attempted murder would have even happened. Hannah doesn't understand him more than any other killer would.

I had no idea about the hate either, I loved S7 and S8 mainly because she was so well written.
Ppl say she was a psychopath and even Evelyn thought so. But Evelyn was an effn hack like all her kin.
In reality, she was a wild and impressionable girl who did evil things and didn’t see a way out when she realized she didn’t want the bad boy life after all like a lot of girls see.
Due to her upbringing she is a sweet but selfish and manipulative woman.
However, she doesn’t stay that way. She really starts to care for Dexter even more than herself and Dexter in turn begins to care for her and (already) his son more than himself and because he sees himself as an absolute destructive force leaves them together so they can survive and not go down with him.
That was the magic. There is not a show like Dexter out there.

I love the actress, but this timeline helped me realize how dumb and lunatic the whole plot with Hannah really was. Two people who kills for their own gain cant be in loving relationship especially after they both betrayed each other already in season 7. If they stayed together, it would be a blood bath, Even more stupid that he left his son with her after she tried to kill his sister. Even Lumen story was more believable than this...

Yvonne Strahovski is a really good actress but Hannah McKay was a poorly written character. And to be honest Dexter wasn't a better character at this point of the show. The cold serial killer simping over another serial killer (who tried to kill his sister) because she's a cute blondie, is a nonsense and whoever came with this idea destroyed the character
I couldn't agree more. Hannah didn't have any discernible flaws, and even when the writers attempted to create imperfections, they were quickly glossed over. She appeared perfect in every situation, whether portrayed as innocent, a victim, or even a killer. As a character, Hannah lacked significant development and seemed to be inserted into the story as a forced plot device rather than an organic element of the narrative. She didn't make it in "New Blood", that's how disliked and insignificant she was as a character.

You didn't show the very end of the series finale. Worst ending ever! I don't want to give any spoilers. Several seasons we had hope Dexter could change. Yvonne Strahovski as the perfect love interest, we were really hoping they would be together in the end. If the ending was better, Dexter would be up there in my top ten.

Just now realizing she's the lady from Handmaids Tale. She got better looking with age.
Hannah’s pragmatic character, coupled with her true and selfless love, reminded me of the high family standards women in the US used to hold dear up until recently. Despite her morally ambiguous actions, driven by the need to defend herself, her dedication to family remains admirable. In this day and age, with the notion of family being torn apart, femininity under siege, her character may seem a vintage relic fading into oblivion to some, while to others, it embodies a beacon of hope. So it’s something definitely worth revisiting, rewatching and rethinking.

Hanna’s character doesn’t care about defending family for the sake of family. She doesn’t care about family values or traditionalism. She cares about her own security and happiness. To her, that means protecting her loved ones and ‘family’, but if her happiness was involved with another value or ideal, that ideal would be the ideal she protects. The ideal itself isn’t what she values but the pleasure and happiness she gains from it. Family is just a means to an end for her. She could just as easily tear a family down if it means preserving her own. Her femininity is also a weapon that she uses with full conscious self-awareness of the power she holds over other people. It’s a tool, nothing more.
Dexter and Hanna are both characters written to suffer from a form of ASPD. As someone who intimately knows people who are clinically diagnosed with this disorder, I can tell you firsthand that it has absolutely nothing to do with family. Psychopaths are pragmatic, yes, but it’s all self-interested, the gratification of fulfilling their desires. If that means embodying an ideal, then that is what they will do, but not for the purpose of upholding high family standards or for the sake of gender politics. They wouldn’t concern themselves with something so pointless. Instead, it’s to fulfill and preserve their own wants and needs.

Ther actress is great and they do have some chemistry but she is such a ficticious character. Tailor made for Dexter and not in a good way. She is like Lila but without the narrative or Dexter condemning her. Definitely the worst of all the love interests in the show.

I wished Hanna was Dexter’s wife and mother of Harrison. Who never got killed by trinity. We didn’t need Rita she was a useless annoying character. Her 2 kids were even worse specifically the daughter after she turned 13 and was given the answer. To all of humanity most asked questions. But she didn’t want to give up any of the answers (spoiled little brat)
