Exactly. Gus is a businessman that has applied capitalist, ruthless efficiency to the drug business. He is not going to do shit on a whim like tuco but he will cut the throat of anyone that threatens his business, no matter how loyal. If you're replaceable and you endanger his business, he's going to kill you.
While everyone is talking about the amazing performances. 2:48 gus sinks a basket clear across the restaurant and smiles to himself...truly a nice moment.
24:16 I love this scene. At this point Gus understood Walt enough to know exactly the right triggers to push to get him in line: his ego, his masculinity, his twisted justification of doing it all for his family.
It frustrates me that so many people didn't understand that Gus was just sayin what Walter wanted to hear in this moment, and that he didn't have the same motivations as him.
To be fair Walter was easy to manipulate because of his ego. It was his major flaw and it cost him so many times but ironically he would still win in the end anyways, causing all the Walter White haters to grovel in their graves.
I just love gus what a fucking villain man the fact he waited 20 years for his revenge is still amazing what a patient and calculating man. and to think in the end, he waited too long and relished in his victory for too long and got taken out by his enemy the exact same thing which happened between him and lalo what a poetic story of revenge of an empire risen and fallen in the same way. this is peak TV
(BB/BCS Spoilers) Gus is the most important character in the BB universe. In that he more than any other character drives forward the events of both shows. Without him, Jimmy would’ve never worked for Lalo, Mike would never have gotten so deep in the game, Nacho and Howard would both still be alive, and Walt and Jesse would never have been anything more than low level street dealers.
"The connect" RUclips channel shows how unlikely that is to be the case. They'd likely be in prison, since they were generally clueless. Next-most-likely, they'd have found a university, biker, or nightclub connect...somewhat like they ultimately found.
What I found terrifying about Gus' character when first watching this show was how Giancarlo Esposito could alter his expression and mannerisms from being an amiable, unassuming fellow to an insensate drug lord. I think that is why his last moments with Don Hector is so memorable to me is because his last expression goes from a moment of tenderness, to bewilderment, and finally absolute terror. What a fantastic and original character, definitely up to Los Pollos standards.
22:24 it's amazing that here we can see that gus remembers and is sad about it, that he can't have relationships and he doesn't have to say a word to us. Just the piano in the background dropping the notes at the same time, which he remembers that.. Incredible.
Also the fact that such a relationship could be used to make him vulnerable in the business, leaving him open to be manipulated into a situation where he is not on top due to said relationship, like Walt and his family. Tuco said it best, there's always a lot of collateral.
Gus has one of my favorite character introductions. It's so subtle you don't even realize you met him when it happens. I completely overlooked him as a background character at first. Gus is a master at hiding in plain sight.
I legit shed a tear seeing Gus go from satisfied spinning his drink and enjoying David's company degrading to a frown, not of sadness but rage as he still lets himself be defined by the awful acts of the Salamancas. I want an alternate ending where Gus hangs out with David like that video of Hank crawling out of the dirt lol

I like to think most of the main characters are highly intelligent, but they all have a character flaw that make them do unwise things. Walter is a chemistry genius, but his pride and ego make him act irrationally in spite of how smart he is otherwise. Mike is a brilliant tactician, but he has heart and mercy, which are good qualities in a man, but wind up being fatal in the business he's involved in. Gus is a highly intelligent businessman and negotiator, but his single-minded pursuit of vengeance at all costs leave him wide open to predictable behaviors that end up being his downfall. Hank is a very competent DEA agent, but his familiarity with the drug industry and the kinds of people he knows to be involved make him frequently rule out the possibility that his meek and mild-mannered brother-in-law Walt could ever manage to deal with them and come out alive. They're all very intelligent and competent at what they do best, but they're also not immune from having a character defect which leads to their undoing.
After watching Better Call Saul, watching Gus try and kill Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad is much more justified. Hector didn't deserve to take Gus with him. At least not until after Gus got justice.
I completely disagree.. Gus wasnt any more justified for him to try and take out Hector after watching BCS than after watching BrBa. Gus had all the justification he personally needed from the flashbacks we see in BrBa. And Gus absolutely deserved to go out the way he did... In fact I couldn't think of a more poetic way for him to have died.
For me it's opposite. While I was watching Breaking Bad, I felt sorry for Gus, I thought Hector didn't deserve the chance to kill him. But after watching Better Call Saul I'm convinced Hector had every right to avenge Lalo, his favourite and most capable nephew.
Debating about who deserves what in BB/BCS is a waste of time. There are no good guys and bad guys - only protagonists and antagonists. That's the whole point.
Thought this was gonna be a breakdown video of how intelligent Gustavo Fring is, but you let him speak for himself by showing BCS/BB clips. Even better!
I like how gus essentially tried to save walter white by getting the two salamanca brothers to go after a Dea agent who could pose a threat for the cartels later on in the future essentially killing two birds with one stone, it means gus really wanted walter to keep living on even after his time was done either out of respect for his talent, or wanting to use him more I suppose but to guses suprise hank managed to survive and defeated the equivilent to two elite cartel hitmen, and in response to this walter wanted to know what was going on and gus simply told him without words "the problem has already been sorted you have nothing to worry about anymore", you can even tell since gus is saying this since he winks at walk confirming that basically the salamanca assasin issue is no longer a thing
Walt milked his advantage to Gus's face, He has immunity, its like chess. The queen (Gus) can't kill the rook (Walter) because the fucking horse (Jesse) is protecting him and vice versa with jesse and walt
It's Gus. Sure in the end he was outwitted by Walt but, that ended up being Walt's undoing. It led to Walt poisoning Brock to get Jessie on his side which led to Hank using Jessie to bust Walt and the whole thing fell apart. However, Gus accomplished everything he wanted to in life: destroy the Salamancas and their whole cartel. Walt basically got everything he wanted to. He died 2 years after his diagnosis (as he originally planned to do) and managed to humiliate his old partners, get his money to his family, and kill all his enemies. Hell he probably could have gotten away in the end if he wanted to but, he had nothing left but a life on the run with a lung wound and no money. So he just accepted death. So if anything Gus and Walt would be tied in their master plan's efficacy.
Lalo: Oh and I'll be back for more chicken! see you soon. Gus in the next scene: *Blows up the restaurant so he doesn't have to give Lalo more chicken*
Gustavo Fring is truly one of the most calculated and intelligent characters ever to be in television. The man spent decades on a revenge mission and took time, planning and money to build his empire, the chief component being his meth lab that took extenuating circumstances, delays and millions of dollars to construct. He could’ve attacked the cartel at anytime once he consolidated his forces but he took the time and patience to gradually tear them down, specifically with the Salamancas. As Hank Schrader put it, Fring was one “magnificent bastard”
I admire Gus Fring, he always gets his revenge one way or another. I understand the concept of getting people back that have wronged you or tried to hurt you. Your enemies deserve no mercy whatsoever.
They say understanding revenge means you should understand you are weak because in effect it's fighting evil with evil. The strong forgive and don't lower themselves by engaging in revenge as it makes them no better than their antagonist . As a result they are seen as the better person . Revenge is weak, evil and reflective of a characterless base even primitive ape like personality. A wise intelligent man with character and integrity not to mention ethics and morality refrain from this thug mentality . That is the psychology of revenge if you didn't know. Also if you can't understand this at least theoretically it also hints at your intellectual level. Basically stupid ignorant people choose revenge .
One thing to like about Gus is how he treats his employees and care about them, and you can see that they respect him as well even though they don't know the reality of this man
"because i am sure you took this home with you, you will also each receive 24 hours of overtime pay" everyone's questioning instantly shifts from "who were those guys?" to "what am i going to pay off/buy with next weeks check?" in mexico, that's called "plomo o plata" [lead or silver] w 24 hours of ot pay, he instantly bought silence. and because he is that great of a fast food boss, AND pays notably more than kfc + others, turnover in PH is low, so he rarely has to worry about a new staffer being spy, undercover, hit man... for GF, its pennies on the millions of dollars
No, not a series. Prequel movie. *Maybe* a two-part special. But it should focus on whatever the hell got a man like Gus Fring have such immense respect and loyalty to Peter Schuler.
He gave us a little taste of his life when he was talking to Hector in the hospital in BCS. I think the big mystery of him is better than knowing everything
This was simply the best-written, best-produced Series ever made. The fact that Better Call Saul was a spin-off and written as a prequel to the main series was another example of Gilligan's genius. Great acting - no doubt. Great cast - for sure. But the WRITING - the creation of what and who Gus became - was what riveted most viewers. YOU - created a GREAT compilation. A pleasure to watch.
What always blows my mind about BB and BCS is that there are people out there like Gus who you walk by every day not knowing their true motives but they are so good at hiding it you never give it a second thought. Ain’t happening. Vince Gillian says he’s done with the breaking bad universe for now. That would mean it will be years if they’d even consider another show. I’m sure you’d agree though that nobody else could play this character and do it proper justice.

That little twitch at 9:45 was some grade A acting. Hats off to Giancarlo Esposito for being Gus Fring. One of the best villains played by the best portrayer of villains. Gus clearly had OCD, and he overcomes it with every move he makes. Mind over matter style, on par with the best of them.
I love how whether or not he survives the poison is coming down to seconds and he still takes the time to remove his jacket and put a neatly folded towel down to kneel on.
They always felt equal to me, just gus used lalos emotions against him be doing this big speech like nacho did and used his pride and showmanship against him like Walt used gus hatred for Hector against him
Gus was definitely a better character in bcs , and i think its genius since hes less cautious in bb due to lalo being dead , he thinks he has a hold on hector
End of Season 4 Gus was very damn cautious... There was simply no way he could've predicted Walter knew about the nature of his relationship with Hector. And even then Gus still ended up dodging Walter's first attempt on his life based on a very ambiguous detail of Jessie's statement on the kid being poisoned.
Lalo was the smartest man in the said universe. He was caught with the worst hand when it mattered most. He also suffers from being in a prequel. They should have written him off as jailed in Mexico because having him as the last chess board is what would make him the true king of the game. Seeing through Gus, knowing what lines are family and business. Shame he died but he died with a smile. Respect for it
i think maybe that's the point the show was trying to make. Lalo, gus, and walt were all very smart, but in that game being smart won't save you. You can make all the right moves and still lose.
The one thing his messed up on was not owning the place where mike dropped off the flyers with Ziegler’s name, address and phone number on it. They could have put the hit squad on him long before it got back to New Mexico
For me the big what if w Gus was what if he had managed to prevent those two gang bangers from killing the kid who killed Combo. Ìf Gus had done that then he probably could have enforced the peace between them and Jesse. Walt would never have had to kill them. Jesse would never have killed Gale. And there wouldn't have been the war between him and Walt. True, there wouldn't be any show past season 3. But still that is the what if that interests me most.

Tenderness???
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Yeah what is the guy talking about, he was pissed the whole time
22:24 it's amazing that here we can see that gus remembers and is sad about it, that he can't have relationships and he doesn't have to say a word to us.
Yep
Gus has one of my favorite character introductions. It's so subtle you don't even realize you met him when it happens. I completely overlooked him as a background character at first. Gus is a master at hiding in plain sight.
I legit shed a tear seeing Gus go from satisfied spinning his drink and enjoying David's company degrading to a frown, not of sadness but rage as he still lets himself be defined by the awful acts of the Salamancas. I want an alternate ending where Gus hangs out with David like that video of Hank crawling out of the dirt lol
I am 64 y o, BB has been of of the most engaging series ever, in all my years, of of all the stories presented, BB has been one one the most enjoyable series ever, excellent writing and story telling.

You watched NARCOS just as good. What about THE SHIELD and THE WIRE??!.If you liked BB then you would most likely enjoy those too as most people who have seen BB like those too. If you have not watch them I suggest you do. I love the positive distraction that happens when you watch great shows like BB.
Wrong Gus deserved to die
That's the whole point.

come to think of it, why doesn't gus have pictures of any brothers on that wall at los pollos?
The way the video goes from the end of bcs to season 2 of bb really shows how much better the cinematography got as time went on
I like how gus essentially tried to save walter white by getting the two salamanca brothers to go after a Dea agent who could pose a threat for the cartels later on in the future
essentially killing two birds with one stone, it means gus really wanted walter to keep living on even after his time was done either out of respect for his talent, or wanting to use him more I suppose
but to guses suprise hank managed to survive and defeated the equivilent to two elite cartel hitmen, and in response to this walter wanted to know what was going on and gus simply told him without words "the problem has already been sorted you have nothing to worry about anymore", you can even tell since gus is saying this since he winks at walk confirming that basically the salamanca assasin issue is no longer a thing
He wanted Walt to live long enough for Gale to learn from him, regardless of his issues with him or not.
Walt milked his advantage to Gus's face, He has immunity, its like chess. The queen (Gus) can't kill the rook (Walter) because the fucking horse (Jesse) is protecting him and vice versa with jesse and walt
But why did gus call hanks phone warning him that they where comming?

Everyone says Gus is emotionless. But, really, Gus is only driven by emotion.
2:50 Cartel Boss or not, every man is a child when it comes to those trash dunks 😄
Both men died with all of their goals accomplished and satisfied.

One magnificant bastard
How though? He got blew to bits in a busy residential area by someone disabled 😂😂😂.
And people say Mike is smarter then Gus, smh
Those guys dodged Lyle. Never mess with Lyle.
I admire Gus Fring, he always gets his revenge one way or another. I understand the concept of getting people back that have wronged you or tried to hurt you. Your enemies deserve no mercy whatsoever.
Gus a patient, calculating Scorpio highly adept at manipulation, deceit,
They say understanding revenge means you should understand you are weak because in effect it's fighting evil with evil.
4:21 that side eye always makes me chuckle

Ain’t happening. Vince Gillian says he’s done with the breaking bad universe for now. That would mean it will be years if they’d even consider another show.
