How DEXTER Should Have Ended

  • Thanks for watching another episode of the CinemAddix show! I, and so many others, were incredibly disappointed with the final 4 seasons of Dexter. Specifically with the final episode. However, the first 4 seasons were among the best I've ever seen on TV. This is how I would have ended the show if I was in charge.

      Dexter finale was much worse. Despite it´s flaws, season 8 of GoT at least felt like the show was about to end.

    • @kush6846
      @kush6846 5 лет назад +40

      Mr. Goldfinch - I disagree, I actually think the finale for Dexter works. It fits the context of the show, and the most human thing Dexter does is shield himself away from his family, and spend the rest of his days in a prison of his own making, living in misery. It’s sad as hell, but it makes sense. Every season of the show has Dexter directly or indirectly hurt someone. There are many examples but the big ones are much like In season 4, when Dexter’s missed opportunity to kill Trinity ended up killing Rita. Season 8, Dexter handing Oliver to Deb, which results in Oliver escaping and inadvertently killing her. Dexter spread chaos and misery without even knowing it until the final season, when he realizes how much pain he’s actually caused, directly or otherwise. GOT on the other hand was just rushed, the show runners completely tossed compelling dialogue and intrigue with bombastic set pieces and spectacle that felt tension less. A lot of people go into movies and tv shows with expectations, which is the biggest way to set yourself up for disappointment. While I didn’t hate the finale of Game of Thrones, I think it’s kind of poetic that the iron throne is given to a broken person, who now has to save a broken world. Beside that message, it didn’t fit the show and overall, it was rushed.

It was heartbreaking but it was fitting. They started it off with him saying he’d be alone and he’d never have a family. They gave him Rita and it still wasn’t right. He found Hannah and he finally had hope. He had his family. They ended it with him being a lonely lumberjack without family and in his solidarity, like he always thought he would. He lost his sister and it was the straw that broke the camel’s back and he realizes he needs to be alone. It was fitting but it’s not what the viewers wanted.

But I feel he shall never rid himself of the Dark Passenger until his death. So I like your ending except for Harrison seamingly at age 10 taking on his father's Dark Passenger, as if it was inherited. LOL I need a "happy" ending. • @floppycopy1284
      @floppycopy1284 5 лет назад +8

      Naw it ended like shit let’s be honest it was lazy because the show sucked past season 4 so they just ended it I like the idea of dexter being hunted and found out the whole idea of collapsing to his dark passenger and his brother leading the way, dexter became to perfect never making a mistake and that made the show to predictable he should have been led up to the point were we think he’s never making a mistake then boom he slips he’s fallen to far to his dark passenger and he’s found out. The rest of the show from that point could have gone any way but I think instead of the theoretical FBI agent deb should have been the one that is persuing him and that leave him no choice to put deb on his table he kills deb and has the same emotional realization he had on the theoretical death bed where he feels emotion and sadness and his dark passenger is gone he then has the 10years later cut and he’s a lumberjack yada yada having to live out the rest of his life now feeling emotion and pain for what he did. Something along the lines of that I also do really like the prison ending of where he has that emotional realization moments before he dies and he leaves his legacy with his son not all tv shows have to end with a so called happy ending keeping the character alive leaving the fans wanting to know what happens to him now that he’s ‘safe’ putting a definite end to dexter is what I thought would have been and should have been the end of him dexter is the angle of death and now it was his turn to die

They showed how he had this HUGE love for Hannah and Harrison and it doesn’t make Since why he would leave them and exile himself because they were his whole world and I understand why he felt like he needed to do that but if he went to South America it’s a whole new life and would be a happy ending for him Hannah and Harrison but still that dark feeling for those in Miami

    i still love the ending the show gave us. dexter got punished in all the ways he feared most: he not only let his sister down, he got her killed. when he finally was able to have human connection in a selfless way, he realized how dangerous he is to the people he cares about. the show ended with him living by himself, living with what he has done and what he had to give up. (not to mention, the shot of deb sinking in the ocean wrapped in the white sheet, then dexter speeding into the hurricane is some of the best television i’ve ever seen).

    Your ending sounds super interesting. The only thing I'd miss is what they did with Deb. I love Deb and how she changed throughout the series. She went from a self-conscious cop to becoming a confident detective, then became Lieutenant, then being destroyed by finding out about her brother, to accepting it and even understanding it, to hating herself and wanting to turn herself in to trying to kill herself/brother, to eventually reconciling with her own story, accepting her love for Joey and ultimately dying. She really went through a lot. Fucking love Debra.

    The only problem with this ending is that you completely skipped over Debra and Dexters relationship(not talking about the romantic one). Throughout the show it is shown so many times that neither Debra or Dexter can live without the other, they are connected. Debra would protect her brother even if it meant going against all her morals, so If a manhunt were to occur she would most definitely help him and try to prevent the police from catching him. Dexter and Debra Morgan's names refer to the law of "Demorgan" which basically means one cannot live without the other. This is why at the end of the show Dexter can't move on with his life after Debra dies.

    And then he realises that he's become one of the killers he spent his whole life haunting is such a sensiinalised statement when it comes to Dexter's personality. It makes it sound as if he actually had a conscience and wasn't a conventional Psychopath who kills for pleasure even though this is the whole theme of the show and he clarifies that all the time that he isn't motivated to bring justice to society . If one thing makes this show do controversial as it was was the fact that the protagonist isn't meant to be a hero ever to anyone or anything other than being this misfortune into people's lives good or bad.

    If only it played off that fact that Dexter was caught and that the whole 8 seasons was him confessing to everything and remembering what he has done all while doing it in the electric chair which explains the monologue he does since the very beginning. Which at the series finale in this ending it shows the camera panning out while he’s strapped in the chair and basically letting the whole seasons be displayed as a confession. I hope this makes since and to bad Dexter did end, even though it was getting repetitive, hopefully they make a spin off series

    I think Season 5 isn't about a new love interest, but it's about forget, a false redemption. Due to Lumen, Dexter have the chance to save a woman, and help him get over the past. Lumen didn't love Dexter (not in romance-romance way) and neither Dexter. They love each other because at that time in their life, they were each other life saver. That's why their relationship ended at the end, that she had helped him to move on. That's also why I like season 5.
    The antagonist in season 7, is so cool and passionate, I hope they could be frenemy

    Dude I love this version. Especially because New Blood came back, ended even worse than the original series, and basically sent us into an all new version of idealistic endings. I’ve heard a dozen ways that other people would’ve ended new blood, and I liked almost all of them more than the actual ending. But I haven’t actually heard many revisions of the series proper. This one is great because it’s more realistic, takes outside of Miami for once, and leaves Harrison in such a better situation with his aunt Deb caring for him rather than Hannah who ends up dying in New Blood leaving Harrison an orphan. We would get to see all of Dexter‘s coworkers’ reactions which is something that everybody was begging for in New Blood. And we get to see the ghost of Rita and Harry as Dexter passes, which would be very heartwarming and fitting. Seeing all of the characters in a scene where Dex finally dies, along with the series, would have been so much more satisfying than just seeing him die in the snowy woods because HIS OWN SON SHOT HIM!! What a travesty the real ending was 😪

Or with your alternative (minus him killing an FBI agent), after Dexter gets caught, he becomes an employee of the FBI. Or the CIA pardons his crimes and gives him a license to kill while getting information on underground criminal operations.
    Dexter doesn’t have to die, or leave his son, or be miserable. It could have been a great ending along with a great show.

  • @thesamuraihobbit
    @thesamuraihobbit 6 лет назад +5

    Tell me what you think of this idea, and nitpick the hell out of it. This is just a synopsis. It'll be six seasons, not eight. Season five is about our favorite monotonous, unblinking serial killer recovering from Rita's murder and being a father to the kids. In this AU season, it's Cody who blames him for Rita's death, because he always saw Dex as a hero. Him failing to protect Rita shattered his dreams of a perfect family. Astor, however, clings to him as the only parent she has left. She ends up being "the only girl he'll ever need in his life" and really form a bond. She sorta becomes a miniature Deb to him, only he's more protective of her since she's his daughter. The kids stay with him and do end up calling him "Dad". They, along with Harrison, are the ones keeping his Dark Passenger from taking control. They move to a townhouse elsewhere in Miami.
    However, despite these four rays of light in his life (Deb being the fourth), Rita's death makes things worse. The Dark Passenger manifests itself in the form of Brian, the Ice Truck Killer. The bad guys in this season are al-Qaeda operatives, their leader being Abu Issa al-Qatari (real name is Harun Rashid), a Qatari-American Sheikh based on the late Anwar al-Awlaki. Before, he's just been recruiting people to AQ via internet and TV, but now he's orchestrating a string of attacks in the Southeastern US. Second in command is a white engineer convert named Salim O'Flaherty. Then you have a young Pakistani college student named Hamza Javadi (played by the Slumdog Millionaire kid), who is the most radical of the lot.
    It starts with a chemical bombing of American Airlines Arena (leading to an estimated 7500 deaths (in the initial blast, more die from their wounds and chemical poisoning), including the Secretary of Defense and all the Miami Heat and New Jersey Nets players). Then there is a shooting in a mall. It's a series of bombings and shooting, seven each. With the FBI and the military having a presence all over Florida, it'll very hard for Dexter to kill people, and he wants these three on his table.
    What stays is Deb and Quinn falling in love, a Santa Muerte-like situation (only with white supremacists attacking innocent Muslim citizens in response to the attacks) where Deb is thrown under the bus by Laguerta, and Quinn suspecting Dexter of knowing more about Trinity than he let on, but gets nowhere with it.
    What does cast suspicion on Dexter is him giving in to his "Dark Passenger's" goading to break the Code. He goes after pedophiles, rapists, and child abusers as well as killers. They were all under investigation by the police. Another thing is a six-year-old girl who survived a kidnapping by an elderly couple who had been kidnapping little girls, holding them prisoner until the age of 18, and then killing them. The girl recognizes Dexter as "hazel-eyed angel" who saved her, but there is no evidence of Dexter ever being in that house, and she was dazed when it happened. Only Laguerta finds any credibility in her statement. The man was killed by Dexter, and the woman was arrested for conspiracy to commit murder.
    More and more criminals under investigation disappear, and that catches Laguerta's attention. She goes under the radar, and sees a connection between these disappearances and the Bay Harbor Butcher killings. She hopes against hope that Dexter isn't her guy, but she's doing what she must. O'Flaherty is killed by Dexter via electrocution (a torture method he used in Iraq), and that angers al-Qatari.
    Meanwhile, Laguerta is finding more and more evidence pointing to Dexter, yet it's all circumstantial. She doesn't even confide this in Angel. Then she discovers that Brian is Dexter's brother, looking through Harry's files. She also finds out that the cabin Doakes died in had belonged to one of the killers of Dexter's mom. Now she does confide in Angel (but doesn't show him the file), asking him if Dexter has been acting strange and if he'd seen him talking to anyone suspicious. It's then Angel remembers the Trinity Killer talking to him the day before Rita died, and it made Dexter leave the station in a hurry. Dexter looked very tense throughout their conversation. In tears, Laguerta tells him that she believes he's the true BHB, and Angel is horrified and flat out doesn't believe her. Laguerta is sure that he didn't kill Doakes, because that would be against his MO. Ultimately, Angel asks her that if it turns out she's right, which he doubts, how will she go about it? She says she will talk to him first, show him what she had found out, and try to get him to turn himself in, at least just to clear his name.
    Quinn and Deb are falling more deeply in love with one another, and we see that the former has bought a beautiful platinum engagement ring with three clear diamonds. Yes, he wants to propose and invites Deb to dinner in a really fancy restaurant with dancing and live performances. This season takes place over the course of ten months. So, that night, he pops the question to which she yes with tears of joy and very creative usage of the word "fuck".
    Of course, they announce it first to Dexter and the kids, who are all very happy (even if Dexter doesn't care much for Quinn) and later to the office. It's all nice until Laguerta asks Dexter to meet her for lunch in a Cuban restaurant. It's here that she starts easing her way into the subject, asking about Dexter's past, talking about the criminals who had disappeared without a trace since Doakes died, etc. She says that if somebody had killed them, then she hopes they rot in hell, but if there was a vigilante serial killer out there, then it was the job of the police to bring him to justice. Dexter feigns ignorance until Laguerta hands him the files she has been collecting of her investigation. Almost in tears, she asks him straight out, "Are you the Bay Harbor Butcher?" Completely cornered now, he nods. After a long silence, she says that she's known him for years. She knows he had his reasons for doing what he did, that he hadn't killed Doakes, but she does inquire about Brian, the Skinner, Trinity, and O'Flaherty, to which Dexter confesses. Sighing, Laguerta says he should turn himself in. She could get him a reduced sentence, that he could plead insanity and be out once the doctors believed him cured, but before he can respond, another shooting is carried out, this time by Hamza himself. Hey, Deus Ex Machinas were big in this show. He guns down Laguerta, but Dexter is eventually able to wrestle the rifle away from him and bludgeons him to death.
    The incident gets rid of the BHB case reopening idea for now, but Dexter has to be more vigilant than ever. A funeral is held for Laguerta who has the street the station is located on named after her. Angel becomes the new Lieutenant. Completely in denial about Dexter, and with no knowledge of how much physical evidence Laguerta has found, does not pursue Dexter further. Dexter is forced to finally "defeat" Brian and only listen to Harry, going back to the original code.
    Over the next few episodes, preparations are being made for the Quinn/Deb wedding and the focus now is on capturing al-Qatari. al-Qatari wants to make his ultimate attack a dirty bomb. Miami Metro is placed on high alert, the FBI patrols every possible location in Florida where there are large gatherings of people, and the military is looking desperately for his hideout.
    Deb and Quinn marry in the second to last episode, and move in together to a beach house. Quinn chose Angel as his best man and Deb took Astor as her maid of honor. Meanwhile, al-Qatari oversees the building of his dirty bomb somewhere with paneled walls.
    The last episode has us on edge for the police, the feds, and the military to find and destroy al-Qatari's bomb and hopefully capture or kill al-Qatari. Deb and Quinn (both have the name Quinn now, but nobody but Deb and Masuka call him Joey) still need to be there to stop al-Qatari too, so no honeymoon yet. Dexter still wants him to himself. We find out that he plans to detonate the bomb in the Magic Kingdom theme park, possibly leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths and rendering Orlando uninhabitable for decades. al-Qatari is fortified in an abandoned maze of a factory, guarded by many terrorists and booby traps. You'd think this would make Dexter think twice about trying to get al-Qatari for himself, but no, he can still get him. Finally, the bomb is defused by an Army EOD unit accompanied by the FBI and several Florida police forces there to evacuate all the Disney World parks and resorts.
    That night in Miami, a SEAL Team is sent into the factory compound, taking out nearly all the AQSE fighters, but al-Qatari escape through a tunnel to a waiting getaway truck, where he is caught by Dexter, who is disguised as one of the AQSE fighters. Of course, he M99s him and takes him to the mosque he frequented, and set up a kill room there. We get a conversation where al-Qatari promises that killing him won't stop al-Qaeda, that even killing bin Laden (remember, season 5 aired in 2010) won't stop the Islamic Jihad. Dexter counters while that may be true, al-Qaeda's operations in Florida are now over. Knowing that his death is imminent, he recites the al-Fatiha prayer (first chapter of the Quran), the declaration of faith, and an Allah hu Akbar before nodding to Dexter as a signal. Dexter stabs him in the chest, just as Deb walks in looking on in horror as she points her gun at Dexter.
    Critique, nitpick, say what you like. That's it for now. Still have to think up a final season.

      thesamuraihobbit 1)
      Why would Dexter electrocute someone it doesn’t make sense, he needs his routine to feel complete 2)Mosque couldn’t make a kill room as it is a public place like a church
      3) It would seem like the terrorist would be distracting the FBI away from Dexter’s “hobby” ; why would Dexter put himself in the center of attention by going after criminals that the FBI is interested in.
      I see where you are going but your plot and ideas are a mess

    • @thesamuraihobbit
      @thesamuraihobbit 6 лет назад

      Thanks, but could you possibly elaborate further? Like if you were to take this path, how would you clean up the mess? Also, what do you think of the Dexter bonding with Astor and the Deb/Quinn relationship?
      1. Dexter doesn't always stab. He electrocuted those two EMTs. He bludgeoned Trinity. He slit Brian's throat. For a big time killer/torturer like O'Flaherty, he'd want to give him a taste of his own medicine.
      2. He killed Travis in an abandoned church. A mosque in a high crime area of town wouldn't really be on anyone's radar. The FBI and military would more likely think that al-Qatari would be in bigger, safer mosques.
      3. AQSE committed terror attacks in Dexter's own state, and those three al-Qaeda bigwigs were able to avoid the feds and military. It'll require suspension of disbelief, but I think Dexter could get them with a little false information and quick thinking to stay a step ahead of the FBI.

      thesamuraihobbit I think The Deb and Quinn relationships is great and it’s funny how Quinn and Dexter have their little on and off disagreements and i think that Astor and Dexter are still cool with each other ; As for Dexter I think the best way to get rid of ASQE to track down the leader and end him while the FBI takes care of the minions

  • @JTMConceptions

    I like some of the ideas in your ending, though I think a season-long manhunt and dexter turning himself in would be kind of dumb. I think the best option they could have gone for would be to have dexter finally actually lose and gets officially caught. Maybe half-way through the season miami metro uncovers evidence linking Dexter to the bayharbor butcher, and then he goes into hiding. It might be cliche, but it would make the most sense from a story perspective for it to be deb who finally catches him, where he's faced with the dilemma of breaking the code to kill his sister or giving up.
    The actual ending isnt all around bad, there were some parts that were truly great, for example, Dexter killing Saxxon might be one of my favorite dexter kills. But i think the execution and certain choices the writers made were terrible. Killing deb was a poor decision imo. Sending Harry away with hannah to argentina felt forced and rushed. The whole "im gonna make a snap decision to go to the hospital and euthanize deb and then take her to my boat while a hurricane conveniently distracts an entire hospital from seeing a man wheel a dead person out of the building" thing made absolutely no sense, dex driving into the hurricane, destroying his boat yet somehow surviving, was extremely confusing and weird. Literally no reaction or expanding on the people of miami metro finding out debs body disappeared and dexter being lost at sea is really strange. And then on top of that, they throw in that dexter is actually still alive living another life? Like why? I feel like they had too many ideas and no direction, so the final 20 minutes of the finale was just a jumbled mess of trying to wrap too many things up as possible.
    Also, in your alternate ending, what was the point of mentioning the white supremacist antagonists and mentioning a specific actor who plays the leader and stating the specific actor who would play the serial killer hunter lol?

      Holy shit. Reading your comment made me think of the ending in a different way. Sorry I just binged watched it. But he narrates through the whole show till that scene right? Although it know it was rushed, maybe they were trying to say (kinda poorly) was that Lumberjack Dexter was narrating the whole story. Thinking about what he life could have been with people in his life & all scenarios always go to shit. Idk. It's a long shot.

      Don't like the idea of a killer who kills bad guys getting caught. Would love an ending where Dex sees Harrison following in Dex's foot steps but stops him from becoming the killer that Dex was. He teaches Harrison to become the best lawyer and never lets a killer go free

    My ending would be:
    Dexter goes back to Miami, but got recognized by some people.
    I mean, he was slipping... and while in the past he was flawless in the things he did, the accumulated stress from sustained life or death situations as well as severed relationships begin to gnaw at him.
    All of Miami is now after him... and the idea of surrender looks more and more attractive as the moments go by.
    So he goes out of his secret cabin in the Everglades... but as he opened the door to go out, a man stood before him.
    “My name is Michael Westen. I work for the CIA, and have been tasked to whisk you out of the country.”
    “I am Dexter Morgan. You might have heard of me in the news. Tell me, why is the CIA trying to protect me?”
    “You and I... we’re weapons. For as long as there are things there that need to be done, someone is always bound to take us out to play.”

    I don’t know why everyone hates ending so much.
    I really LOVED the actual ending of Dexter. I really felt like it captured the tragic theme of the entire show. Because all of Dexter’s life he’s running around trying to keep the people that he cared about safe. And he realizes (as he had before) that in order to keep his son safe has as to leave.

      Katelyn Siegel I see what you mean, but think of it this way: Dexter stays away from Hannah and Harrison because he thinks it’s to protect them from himself, but by abandoning them he has hurt them even more which further proves his destructive nature. He meant to protect them but ended up hurting them by leaving them. Just a thought.

    Idk about this story as an alternative. ......but I can say your idea about Harrison following in Dexter's shoes does truly make sense. And it's why the "reboot" ....or "continuation" of Dexter will eventually happen. The
    only exception will be that the new show, aptly named 'The Code' takes place 20 years from Deb's death. And a now 22 yr old Harrison, who goes by HARRY, is struggling with his own internal Dark Passenger.
    With this setup .....the show can go in a couple different directions. Maybe Dexter has a limited role , where he mentors Harrison much like Harry mentored himself, or .... they can bring Dexter's character back Full-time and have an actual father/son relationship that could go in a lot of epic directions. The sky is the limit with what they could do.

    That was a MUCH better ending than the one in the show. I wanted so badly for dexter to get caught and for the whole Miami metro to be shocked and revolted and amazed that such an accomplished killer with over, what, 400 victims? Could have been right under their noses. It's not that I didn't like dexter, I just wanted more closure than that. And the truth always finds a way to reveal itself.
