  • We have finally arrived at the dreaded 8th season of Dexter. With a new "final" season coming, does the 8th season fare any better with the knowledge that it's no longer the ending of Dexter?

I always thought something like that would have been an amazing season. Where there is some unknown person who we gradually realize is aware of Dexter’s secret and is secretly helping him in the background. The suspense of who that would be and a reveal would have been great, and Matthews would have been the perfect choice for that. I dunno man, there is so much untapped potential in this entire series including S9. Where are the decent writers and why do so many season endings shit the bed?

Unfortunately, Dexter like many popular TV series became a victim of it's own network and showrunners. It never needed 8 seasons to begin with, and like many shows it became less impactful over time with the writing getting worse and worse.
Personally, after the season 4 finale which is up there with the BEST finales in TV history, I think they should have ended it at season 5, maaaybe season 6. Except season 5 being a different storyline of course.
You can definitely see the massive dip in quality the show takes after season 4, its almost feels like a different show.

I was genuinely enjoying the Zach storyline with Dexter teaching him the code. It reminded me of the character in seasons 1 and 2 who killed the person that assaulted him and was struggling to control his urge to kill. Dexter was going to mentor him and they randomly decided to kill him off. But Zach was starting to grow on me and I was so disappointed with how that story ended.

19:39 Blame Scott Buck Cody. He's the reason the show went from the crime drama about a serial killer it was in Seasons 1-4 to a bad family and romance drama about a guy that just happened to be a killer in Seasons 5-8. It's his fault Dexter was retconned from an evil guy only killing worse people because he liked it not to save innocents to being painted as a hero.

13:34 In the first few episodes Vogel is portrayed in a creepy way calling psychopaths "a gift to the world" and saying they're the peak of evolution or whatever and studies Dexter in a similar way to Sartain wanting to study Michael Myers in Halloween 2018 but after Dexter kills one of Vogel's old patients that's all dropped and she just becomes Dexter's surrogate mother until her son Daniel kills her.

Personally, I thought the show should have ended with Dex being exposed by Deb and going to prison, only to realize that serving life with no parole alongside other (evil) murderers is essentially his perfect environment. A life where the Dark Passenger can take the wheel and just mow down anyone it wants... Like Rorschach saying "You're locked in here with ME!"... With the irony being that now the good and caring Dexter is what he has to hide, instead of his darkness.

The Deb vs Dex idea would have been amazing and 100x better than the ending we got. Actually, anything would have been better. The last 6-7 episodes just felt so jumbled and rushed like they didn't know which direction to take it in. And I believe up until very soon before they filmed this season, they weren't sure if it would be the last one. That may have contributed to the overall sloppiness , lack of direction, wasted opportunities and underwhelming ending.

When I finished S1 and was flicking through the catalog on Netflix and saw the episode title “remember the monsters” I thought Dexter went rouge and got to the point where he was killing civilians and law enforcement as he got close to the end, like death note and the episode title was like Dexter thinking back to a time where he only hunted monsters like his intentions got lost in the chaos of S8, Dexter was going to reminisce about his actions and un alive himself in the “storm”
Turns out that idea for the final thoughts was better then a throw away line from Deb followed by a fuck for good luck.

They were setting up the ending of this season well before the last two episodes. When Hannah came back, it was clear they were trying to fulfill their original plan of getting a fresh start (mentioned in season 7) and Argentina is brought up in the last several episodes as an endgame for Dexter. There is a sense of finality to that. Of course, we know as it’s happening that it’s not really going to go down like Dexter hopes. And that gives a foreboding feel to the last half of the season.
I think a better idea for a final season is Dexter being found out and there actually being a fulfillment of what was teased in season 2: a manhunt for Dexter. It would have been awesome to see his friends in Miami Metro see who he really is and to have to deal with the fallout from that. This could have been the last several episodes and somehow tied into Deb going off the rails. Maybe she confesses to killing LaGuerta, and the dominos fall from there.

This is a great review. I expected to come here and have to write a dissertation on why this season is actually brilliant but you did a great job.
I agree with you on Vogal, that relationship should have been established earlier, maybe 7. I agree with you on the brain surgeon being kind of lame and it should have been bigger.
Your issue with the ending is mostly on execution, fair enough, to each their own. Not much to argue with there. Speaking of the concept, the concept of deb dying and Dexter going off on his own to live alone is absolutely brilliant. And I think is the best concept for an ending they could have went with tbh. It brings the series full circle and bookends it perfectly with the first season. I think a lot of people miss this and admittedly it's easier to see when you binge watch the whole series over a few weeks. The point of this ending (for anyone that missed it) is that Dexter isn't a psychopath at all. He never was. In truth, Harry is the real monster of the series, Dexter was a shattered and broken little boy that needed serious therapy to deal with his trauma. Harry knew that, that's why he killed himself. Dexter wasnt a monster born in blood, he was a monster created by Harry. In the first season he feels absolutely nothing, for anyone, not Rita, not his sister. By the last season he realizes he actually loves Hannah (something a psychopath can't do) and his son, and Deb's death makes him realize that because he loves them he HAS to stay away from them. He realizes he really loved Deb (as a sister lol). I think Vogal even mentions at some point (I think her entire purpose was to deliver this line if I'm being honest) that psychopaths can't feel love, not really, because to love you have to be able to do something truley selfless, something they can't do. Dexter realizing that his way off life is a like a cancer eating everything and putting his family in danger (something he should have realized after season 4 but wasn't ready to see yet) and then deciding to get as far away from them as possible IS a selfless act. It proves he does actually love. So he's not a psychopath at all.
Anyway, great review my man. Have a nice night.

  • @LokiTricksterG

This season is truly awful and has my vote for "worst season of a good show" ever. However, there were some outside circumstances that hindered it. For starters, they didn't have as long to work on it as they did other seasons. Dexter always premiered every year in October, but Season 8 actually premiered in June - only seven months after the ending of Season 7. I believe this was because Showtime were also premiering Ray Donovan in June and wanted to use Dexter as a lead-in.
Showtime also had big plans to create a spin-off. As such, I think the writers were hesitant to go "all in" on the ending because they assumed there would be a spin-off coming shortly. A few weeks before the finale, there was even a rumor circulating online that Debra was going to die in the last episode, which would lead to Quinn snapping and becoming a vigilante. The final scene would be Quinn on the prowl for a kill saying, "Tonight's the night" - echoing the very first episode of the series and leading into a spin-off of Quinn becoming the new Dexter.
I have no idea where the rumor started, but it was strange because they seemed to get half of it right. Maybe it was an early idea in the writer's room that was canned.

I may be in the minority here but I don't feel that season 2 happened too soon. It was a natural storyline. You can't have Dexter dumping bodies at the same place and expect not to get caught. You can't have some one like Doakes never figure it all out about Dexter.
In my opinion, the last season should have been like season 2 only better. Dexter getting exposed and everyone hunting him down, as part one, and a courtroom drama as part 2 focusing on his trial. Batista, Deb and Quinn should have led the efforts.

Just out of curiosity, did you ever come across fibr3optix's "Rewrite" of Dexter's final season? I thought that would have been a great way to end the series. I also thought introducing the Bay Harbor Butcher storyline early on was actually a smart idea. That way, it can come back to haunt Dexter in the later seasons, which I thought was the endgame heading into season 8. If felt more organic that way than just leaving it until the end, when some scuba diver just so happens to find the bodies because it's conveniently the final season. There are about 1,000 different ways they could have ended the series that would have been exponentially better than what we got.

I do, however, have one more comment about the Hannah McKay issue. Personally, I HATE this character. And I think that those who "love" the character, at least the guys, confuse how attractive Yvonne Strahovski is with how genuinely intriguing her character is. To be fair, I've seen Yvonne Strahovski in other TV shows and movies and enjoyed her much more than in this series (i.e., Chuck, 24: Live Another Day, etc.). But imagine how much better BOTH seasons 7 and 8 would have been without this character. Her mere presence in the show underscores just how contrived the later seasons of the show could be at times. She's only in the show because the writers and showrunners wanted Dexter to have a love interest. But what you WANT is not always the best way to go. Ultimately, opinions about entertainment are subjective to a very substantial degree, but season 8 of Dexter is nearly universally hated. And most of the hate stems from the boring, contrived, muddled storyline, of which Hannah was the focal point for half of the season. In this case, I think that general consensus dictates that even if you do like the character, deep down, you probably feel that the show would have been better off without her.

I personally always wanted the final season to be devoted to dexter getting darker and darker breaking his code more and more to the point of where he realizes he lost himself an basically needed to be killed like a rabid dog, they tried doin that in the final episode of new blood but it was only for 15 minutes and sooo rushed, they should've had a slow progression like Mr White in breaking bad

7:12 A season that probably should have had him found out as the Bay Harbour Butcher and trying to escape Miami as a manhunt starts for him instead has him only try to leave Miami because of Hannah's obsession with Argentina and wanting to go there.

It was basically Filler The Season. Pointless plots about Masuka having a daughter, Angel's sister Jamie dating Quinn which goes nowhere and he gets back with Deb, Deb working for a private investigator which leads to the shit "bounty on Hannah's head" subplot. Vogel's a retcon who was never mentioned or seen in the 7 previous seasons so making her part of Dexter's backstory and helping Harry with the Code came out of nowhere, her son was hyped up as this remorseless pure evil monster but was just a mama's boy jealous that Vogel was paying more attention to Dexter than him and it never felt like the last season but just another one.

This season is so frustrating to watch. How much time do they spend trying to keep Hannah hidden ... and she doesn't even ... put on a god damned hat when she's in public. It's crazy. She's got an insane amount of money and they can't ... get her a wig?
They knew before the season started that it was the last season. Why are they going through the trouble of introducing Masuka's daughter? It's a neat idea and she seemed like an interesting character. But, why introduce her? She doesn't ... do anything or matter. It gave the actor (CS Lee) more of a real range in acting to handle than he had before.
We've had 7 consecutive years of Dexter having virtually no emotions. Now he's all distraught over this old lady, and Hannah, plus his sister. It's lame.
Killing Deb like that was really lame. Not only because the CGI to make it look like a hurricane was coming was clearly out of their budget. The big moment where the other killer takes out his own mother? They could have done that with Deb and made it a much larger thing with more emotional impact .. than a lady Dexter knew nothing about until a few weeks prior. And ... yo ... dropping that body in the ocean as a hurricane roles up ... what are the odds Deb's body was thrown into a house at 90 miles per hour?
The ending where he ... basically tries to end himself, and then then uses that as a way to fake his own death and start a new life ... dude ... what? Why? You want the scene of the wreckage being found to cause an emotional impact in the audience ... and that stands for ... 10 seconds before the next scene begins and you find that was meaningless? Why? Why would anyone think that was a good idea?
    Booooooooo!

Strongly disagree on Hannah. Her and her plotline was the final nail for the show. Apparenly Dexter was still made in the era where romantic interests were pretty much obligatory but I personally couldnt give a f if Dexter found love. Dexter finding a kindred spirit in a another psycopath was completely the wrong direction to take the show. They should've gone stronger on the Deb finding out who Dexter was storyline. Like you mentioned. Forget Vogel... Hannah turned Dexter into her puppet and a lovesick idiot. He left his son to this psycopath who in many ways was worse than Dexter.
Dexter realising he causes pain to people around him is something he realised an the end of every season since Rita died. It's worn out conclusion by the time they do it for the last time. Dexter needed to get caught or needed to be killed by Deb. That's was just about the only way to end it properly. In the trial of Dexter they could've gone with the vigelante angle but fail and then be killed in prison or executed.
Unfortunately New Blood dropped the ball as well but mainly because there was too much to correct and it couldnt go back on some of the plot developments from the original run. I guess there is a prequel coming but in my opinion they should remake the show with clearly defined arc lasting around 5 season. Like the original showrunner wanted.

8:32 The people who try to pretend Season 8's ending is some deep "Dexter was punishing himself for everything he'd done" annoy me. Really they just threw a rushed ending together. Dexter saying "I have to protect Hannah and Harrison from me" was annoying too. You should have killed Hannah Dex not fucked her.

True Hannah was the worst character the show ever introduced. When Lilah killed Doakes and nearly burned Rita's children alive Dexter chased her all the way into another country just to kill her. Meanwhile Hannah poisons his sister and not only is she given a second chance in season 8 but Dexter leaves his freaking kid with her. What were they thinking???

I don't have a problem with the outline of season 8... I think it had what it took to be an excellent season of Dexter. It just needed the usual season off (instead of back to back seasons) to be ironed and hashed out and they needed longer rather than shorter shoot times.
I disagree on the Deb thing. I see no version of the 8th season where Deb doesn't die in the end and I think it was important to make her a sympathetic character down the stretch. However the scene where she drives the car in the lake to kill them both is ridonculous on so many levels and seems out of place, but I like the storyline of Deb gaining an understanding through Dr. Fogul. It enhances the story of Dr. Fogul meeting her demise as well as Deb. I saw Deb's death from a mile away once they made her character almost enlightened.
Aside from wishing Harrison was in a coma throughout the season I like the Dr. Fogul, Deb, Saxxon. Elway, Hannah, Zak storyline. I don't mind the Masuka daughter storyline either... it was a non cliche' way to give Masuka a little bit of a happy ending. Overall it just needed to be ironed out is all, because it was rushed and sloppy.
I really loved the way they killed Deb off, however once again it was sloppy and there were elements associated with it that needed to be ironed out. It's such a frustrating season, because with some subtle adjustments and a fixed up ending it would have been an excellent season. I know the writers wanted to kill Dexter, but the network wouldn't let them because they wanted to leave the door open for a spin off series and to me the perfect compromise would have been Dexter heading into the storm to kill himself with some subtle hints (which they set up so I'm guessing this is what their initial compromise was) to suggest that maybe Dexter faked or failed to kill himself in the event they decided to continue and/or do a spin off series. Apparently half of the writers had the mindset that we can't just let Dexter get away with it... that's unfair there has to be consequences, so they decided to copy the ending of the Shield and go with the Dexter living in his own prison/hell ending and the Luberjack is what we got. Dexter being declared dead because they found his boat wrecked was a little odd and this death being printed in an international paper for Hannah to see was odd as well, but I digress. I always shut the show off after Dexter heads into the storm, which I would have loved and it was set up perfect with a gargantuan hurricane which is extremely symbolic for Dexter and his path. The only worse ending than what we got would have been Dexter getting caught and getting the electric chair, because that would have been so insanely cliche', and I just want to watch the first show ever to let someone get away with it and not live in a hell of their making, dying (although a self chosen death to protect his remaining loved ones would have been getting away with it in a sense and I like that) or worse getting legal justice, which I'm almost certain that New Blood is going to end this way, because I know the Clyde Phillips has been jonsing for this ending.

Every writer and every movie producer knows that the most important part of telling a story is that the end... It can either save the story or destroy it for example we'll get game of thrones... And for me as a gamer my favorite franchise game was Mass effect and the ending of Mass effect 3 was such a huge disappointment it took the franchise of Mass effect down a notch but hopefully Mass effect 4 will come out even better but they should have really focused I'm trying to make season 8 the best it can be

Quinn executed a mobster and got away with it pretty easy. I suppose this is a hint to a law enforcers' culture (at least in USA) who are pretty revengeful when a colleague is murdered. It makes a little sense that Dexter got away since a sister/comrade was killed. Of course, that should lead to some questions about what Dexter is actually capable of.
