It must have been awkward as hell for Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter who'd recently divorced at the time. And what kind of shitty psychiatrist was the one Deb had. "Oh it's perfectly fine you fancy the adopted brother you grew up with. Go tell him."

I’m not sure that Debra really fell in love with Dexter. I think if someone engraved it into your head that you’re in love with someone like Debra’s psychiatrist did you start to believe it or at least wonder is this possible? So I’m not so sure Debra was ever in love romantically with Dexter.

Deb+Dexter was a serious misstep. I feel like no therapist is going to encourage someone, who grew-up with another in a brother-sister relationship, to entertain the idea of having a romantic relationship. Regardless of not being blood-related, in their minds they are brother and sister---something more would be traumatic to their psyche, and it would ruin their family bond forever. When this first came out, I was like, "What is this show trying to push on people?!?"

    • @LokiTricksterG
      @LokiTricksterG 2 года назад +10

Good point. There were several shows that tried to push weird brother-sister romances in the 2010's. Besides Dexter, you had Game of Thrones, Bates Motel, Ray Donovan, and an odd brief scene in Mr. Robot. I seriously think this is some Hollywood producer's secret kink.

    • @Xehanort10

@@LokiTricksterG At least with Bates Motel they acknowledged Caleb was a creepy incestuous rapist and had Norman hate him even though it was hypocritical since Norman had incestuous feelings for Norma too which is a part of the character of all 3 Normans from the Psycho books, films and TV series.

The addition of the Deb being in love with Dexter thing pisses me off to this day. It wasn't needed. Thats her brother. Her idol. That's what little sisters do. That's ALL it was. Her finding out her role model is a murdered who stands against everything she stands for would have been plenty devastating.

5:29 Yeah before the reveal they had him struggle between his good and evil personalities but the minute Travis is forced to accept Gellar is dead he's just "I'm fully crazy and evil now." They should have kept up the conflict between his good side and his need to kill.

Brother Sam's story line was the most interesting plot point because they had a genuine friendship. I also enjoyed the Tooth Fairy and Nebraska episodes. It was great seeing the Ice Truck killer again. Other than that season 6 was a chore to watch. Quinn was a lovesick simp. Mike could have been a great character. The Deb loving Dex story was pretty ridiculous even if they were married irl. The last 3 or 4 episodes of season 6 were pretty good though. Doomsday could've been a much more interesting antagonist if they would've developed his character more and scrapped the Gellar twist.

I actually liked this season; maybe it's because i'm not that smart but I didn't really see the twist coming, I never thought about how the victims didn't look at Geller, and so when it came to that it was Travis the entire time, it was a twist especially with how his interactions with his sister developed. I do think that sudden character change of Travis was...well sudden, though, but maybe when he finally saw Geller's dead body again, he lost it.
I never cared about Laguerta and Batista's relationship, neither did i care about any of Deb's boyfriends besides of course the ice truck killer (and Lundy to an extent), so her being a Lieutenant and trying to deal with that change was something I liked. I always hated Quinn but I think this season was honestly a slight improvement even if his entire arc felt pointless.
Idk, i thought it was a pretty good season. Season 5 was also good but the final minutes of it severely bothered me. I legit got mad that she didn't discover that it was Dexter behind the veil and it felt out of character for her. This one was better sans the whole Debra loves Dexter thing.

I'm not defending the Deb being in love with Dexter thing, but I predicted it, I knew somehow it's gonna happen so wasn't shocked or mad when it came out, in many scenes, even in early seasons her behavior was indicating something more than just sisterly love. Debra Morgan’s actress, Jennifer Carpenter, revealed to Red Carpet News TV she always knew Deb was in love with Dexter on some level, so she played it like that from the start, and not to brag, but I picked up on that.

You're crazy if you think it's obvious that the twist of the killer hallucinating the second was obvious by the second episode (as you say about 4.5 minutes in). It wasn't until the third episode that there was even a single scene with both of those characters that also had a third character in it, and it would only be a on a second viewing that this would even be apparent (the waitress was into the younger guy and checking in on him and ignored the older guy ... that's not uncommon). There were about 5 scenes with the pair of them by the end of the second episode that involved zero other characters and NOTHING for you to base your guess on.
Shortly after this they confirm that the older of the pair is a real person and was recently active with his job and he's the primary person of interest. It isn't until episode 4 that there is a scene that even ... seems awkward where the female victim is on the floor speaking only to the younger Doomsday Killer. It's shot in a way that it seems like she's intentionally averting her gaze from the older of the pair. If she's afraid of the older person who's eagerly talking about how she needs to die, her looking to the younger man who she just slept with for compassion and help makes sense.
The 5th episode has the pair of them in a nightclub not interacting with any additional characters aside from a larger man very pointedly walking around the older of the pair who isn't supposed to exist. With hindsight it's clear that this is a logistical error with the extra, but that error from the extra makes it clear that another person CAN see the older of the Doomsday Killers. Up to this point there have been a total of three scenes with the two of them that involve anyone else. The same episode also has the older character alter the world. As the younger killer moves to the back of the car with the next victim to put her in the trunk the older of the two opens the trunk from inside the car. You can obviously use the unreliable narrator trope to account for this. But, this is another example of the audience seeing the older character alter things.
All good if you don't like the twist. All good if you saw it before it was revealed. There's no chance you saw it by episode two, and it would be a bizarre leap to guess that after the scene with them in the diner.
It's a weak season. The gimmick of the twist wasn't anywhere near the biggest issue.

One of my pet peeves about this season is the part where the girl that Colin Hanks's character has trapped in the church, after she escapes & is describing what happened to the police, says that there were definitely 2 different guys who were keeping her prisoner. She was blindfolded the whole time which is how they got around her being able to see that it was just Colin Hanks but she goes on to explain how one of the men was so sweet and kind and the other was mean. This makes NO sense whatsoever later on when it's revealed that it was just Colin Hanks the whole time. It's not like he was play acting the part of Edward James Olmos too. There's no way she would've actually thought there were 2 different people there, it was just put in to throw people off the "twist" which is fine but if you're going to do that at least have it make sense 🙄 & I say this as someone who was not as bothered by this season as a lot of other people were.

They explain it, (Spoilers if you don't want to read the explanation in a RUclips comment) she was in a restaurant with Quinn, a guy or some guys (can't remember) come in to shoot up the place, and she winds up killing them. So she gets the publicity from that, which in combination with the captain wanting to go against LaGuerta (who wanted Batista to replace her when she got promoted) got Debra the job.

I hated the Nebraska episode. Dexter takes some young, hottie cashier into the back, bangs her,...and leaves? What? It felt sooooo out of character. And the way he handles Trinity's son makes no sense either. They drive all the way to Nebraska, he tells the kid to get over it, and they drive back to Miami. Again...what?

It was stupid how in the later season they turned Dexter into some horndog who'd bang almost every woman he saw when at the start of Season 1 he even says in a narration he doesn't understand sex. In early seasons his only serious relationships were with Rita and Lila with Rita, Astor and Cody starting out as just his cover to kill but him coming to care for them in his own way and Lila because she had a similar lack of emotion to him and thought she could help him deal with his urges until he realised she was a loon obsessed with him and loved starting fires.

    @connellyj823 2 года назад +2

There's no denying the Deb falling in love with dexter is weird and icky. Even Deb initially reacts to the therapist's suggestion with complete disgust. And while I don't necessarily think it's the strongest way to accomplish what they were going for, I do think a few defenses of it get overlooked and/ or ignored.
For starters, incest isn't just icky or gross. It's also illegal. But there's a reason that we had to make laws against it. Sadly, it isn't necessarily in our biological programming to avoid it. We are taught (for good reason) that its inappropriate. But those feelings developing amongst even biological siblings isn't unprecedented. And Deb and dexter aren't biological siblings so it could happen, gross as it might be.
Second, and much more importantly, this storyline is pulled out as Deborah is in therapy. Debs character has, from season 1, been a damaged person with severe daddy issues that lead her to inappropriate relationships with men. As she is exploring this in therapy it is actually the therapist that suggests she has confusing feelings for dexter. Not necessarily Deb that arrives at that belief. And only after it is suggested to her and the thought is put into her mind, does her subconscious begin to toy with the idea. I always got the impression that Deb wasn't ever really sure what to make of her feelings for dexter, and was only nudged in this direction at the therapists urging.
Finally, the reason to have this awkward and uncomfortable storyline at all is much less to make her discovery of the "real dexter" more tragic and crushing. And much more to help explain why she doesn't immediately put him down or turn him in. Of course they are close, and of course they have a familial bond. But we do things for love that we would never do for family. And Deb was developed strongly as the kind of person that would not tolerate Dexter's darkness. They couldn't explain Deb excusing what he is and what he does. Unless, of course, at the time she discovers the truth, she's simultaneously wrestling with the possibility that she is in love with him. Even if that isn't the case, what's clear to her is that her feelings for dexter are intense, complicated, and beyond normal sibling attachment. After everything they've been through, he's her rock, and the person she cares most for in the world. And that dynamic (again, while icky) does help to explain why she would defy every moral she was raised to believe in, just to protect him.
Overall, I get why this plot point is divisive, and I totally understand why people don't like it. But I wasnt as bothered by it as most, because I think there was enough nuance and explanatory value in the storyline to be worth including.

None of the plot to get to that point is good and most of it is forgettable or downright bad like the Debra-Dexter love thing going on. Excellent review, I mostly agree with it. I rank it as a weaker season as well.
I only rank season 6 higher than seasons 3 and 8, but it's still an enjoyable Dexter season. It’s not among the excellent seasons of Dexter which I consider to be 1,2,4,5,7 (in no particular order).
There’s some annoying or unlikeable storylines, but the season starts with a bang with Dexter's highschool reunion. The theme of God and Dexter toying with the ideas of a higher power is important in the entirety of Dexter’s journey. It doesn’t feel like a stretching of the show overall, but I agree that the Deb catching Dexter portion of it felt stretched a season too long. I don’t think Dexter killing Nick makes brother Sam all for nothing. I wouldn’t expect Dexter to go from a need to kill to complete forgiveness because of Brother Sam, but he made an impact on him, besides he wasn’t going to kill Nick, until he started gloating, which is something Dexter wouldn't have done before.
Deborah as lieutenant bugged ( I don’t disagree with the storyline though)… it was uncomfortable watching her power trip on her position rather than being humble about it. I agree that the Doomsday killer twist in the season doesn’t work out, but when people therefore hate the season for it, that’s redic. I find it just as flawed when movies/shows make a twist impossibly cryptic. But I disliked the doomsday/Geller portion of it more so because it dragged.
And I agree, Deb being in love with Dexter I found to be unnecessary (I don't buy into this being intended all along as some have theorized). Did the show really think we needed this to believe that Deb would cover for Dexter, because she obviously would in a heartbeat, especially since we already witnessed Deb do the same thing in season 5 when she lets the vigilante killers go, which is the same principle… no Speltzer necessary. I liked Mike Anderson’s entire story arc, which wasn’t much and I particularly liked the scene where he and Dexter are working a crime scene together. I’m guessing he was brought in for the purpose of being killed off to steer the narrative of Victor killing a cop, which wouldn’t work as well if it was an unknown entity. Or maybe they gave the Mike Anderson character the shaft and ended up reducing his character time more than what was planned and the actor found a better role so they killed him off, but I lean towards his character being an intended sacrifice.
Anyways I could break down this show for days, because I’ve watched it a bajillion times around, but when ranking a season it’s also important to look at the enjoyment factor (did it drag and approx how much drag time does it have vs. entertaining time) as well as bad storylines, which I realize could be challenging for those who’ve only seen it once. Overall season 6 is still a very good season, however it’s one of the weaker Dexter Seasons. I think it’s better than season 3, because it has a lot less drag time, which becomes increasingly apparent with every re-watch.

While I'm not a big fan of the Geller/Travis storyline, it bugs the crap out of me when people say they didin't like it because they figured out the twist. I don't think the show cared if the audience figured out that twist or not. It's not a make or break twist. You either think that Travis is being bossed around by a real person or a delusion. I see no reason for the show to make Geller's and Travis's interactions unrealistically cryptic in order to sell something that doesn't really matter if the viewer knows it or not, as long as Miami metro and Dexter doesn't know it.
The reason why I didn't care for it is because that storyline dragged for me and was a lull in the Dexter story every time they would go to it, which improved after Geller was out of the picture.

i will say (and maybe it was me being stupid or just not noticing) but the twist did get me but like you said i wished they revealed it by like the end of episode 6 then for the second half have colin hanks (who imo is a good actor) deal with the conflict of having to kill for a bigger purpose.. that could be a real great turn of events dexter being someone who kills bad people bc he likes killing and found an outlet.. and the doomsday killer not liking to kill but is doing it bc of fear of causing the end of the world.. but they prolonged it so much that they didn't leave enough time to develop the character.. oh and the deb and dex thing can go to hell lol.. overall i didn't like it as much as the first 5 seasons but its not terrible there are some great moments.. i can't fucking stand season 8 (mostly bc of how the writers treated deb god she got so annoying!!!)

I haven't figured out how everyone was surprised that Deb was in love with Dexter. I remember watching the show with my buddies and by like the 3rd/4th season we were all commenting that they wanted to bone each other and they should just get a room. We knew Micheal c hall was married to her in real life but u could pick on the undercurrent of sexual tension between their character more some from Deb. So I maybe in a minority that I didn't get mad about the Deb in love with Dex angle, yeah they are brother & sister but not by blood. Also I think it's hilarious that people were soooo mad and thought it was gross even now in a post GOT world. But yet people didn't bat in eye after a few seasons with Jaime & cersei and there characters were blood relations. With that being said after trinity's death I do feel the show lost a lot of steam and quality especially the end. Hopefully new blood puts those wrong things right.
Also Vince masuka is a damn treasure and I for one hope he shows up in new blood.
Side note: I remember seeing an interview with Jennifer carpenter somewhere that she had a discussion with the creators of the show that she thought Deb was in love with Dex and that was the way she approached and played Deb. This discussion supposedly happened before the show was made.

They had done *more than enough* with the OTT religion thing (imo) with Trinity. In fact, Trinity was a bit overbearing about how religious people (Christians in that case, AND in this case in a way) are not Showtime's thing. Or Dexter's thing. By the end of S4, Dexter's run into Christianity more than once and did all the dissing that needed to be done. S6 just felt like leftovers of rehashed overdone leftovers. Brother Sam ...yeah I sorta didn't hate him but *cliche!!!* Anyone else? I guess it was "surprising" that Brother Sam wasn't a murderer? I sort of remember him wanting Dexter to have a Bible? (I try to avoid S6 like the plague so no way I'm rewatching that trash!)
S6 was so bad, I quit. Until people in a Dexter group said nah, you gotta push through to get to "spoiler". I tried 7x01 and quit again. I eventually just skipped some of early S7 😂 to get to Sirko (yes, they had to spoil me a bit for me to try it), and yeah that was worth it. I went back to 7x02 and "watched" all of S7. Sirko was great. *And I should have quit again after S7.*
There is *nothing redeemable* about S6. I can't even watch S5 because I know where it leads to (ie, S6). I go S1-S4, S7, and now I'm trying S9 but *_that ain't working out so well_* I feel a LOT of stupidity and a great desire to cancel Showtime again. At 9x03, I just want someone to nuke everyone in NY and get it over with. It's BAD. It may be worse than S6 or the unmentionable season! Because at least with S6 and the unmentionable season, there were some characters I was remotely interested in though they were destroyed by the stupid showrunners/writers. I don't care about ANYONE in S9. Harrison is okay -if he blows up NY and the inhabitants of that stupid place they're in. (Yep: the whole state has to go in Dexterverse. "Jimverse". Whatever.)
Good review though. You were nicer about S6 than I ever could manage, but at least you don't pretend that there were good reasons to watch or re-watch that failure season. I've watched your S1-4 Dexter reviews, and the S7 review. I'll watch your S5 review next (I liked Lumen, but S5 is just too close to S6). I might even watch your review of the season between Season Sirko and S9. Thx.
