This is my own experience with the movie, and I am not telling anybody not to see it or like it. I was so excited for this. Elfman's amazing score started, they way the camera flew through the model and the kid in my heart was so happy. However, this movie completely sucked. It felt like a 6 hour movie. Too many plots. Justin has never been more insufferable. Willem was a complete waste. Monica was completely underutilized. Winona felt like she didn't want to be there, and her performance felt like it was a contracted job and not a passion job. Best thing was Keaton and Catherine. It's an extremely well executed movie. The effects and practical effects were amazing. It has a lot of good things, but it didn't win me over. BOB was so great
This movie is chaotic and does have too many characters probably. You know what, though, I didn't mind it. I really enjoyed this movie and liked it more than I thought I would. Pleasantly suprised.
i hated how they focused on jeffery jones character the whole time. he was not that important of a character in the first movie but they made him the center in this one more than beetlejuice.
It makes sense though . Remember in the original the Maitlands were playing the straight man to the zaniness. Without them, and with jenny Ortegas character being unlikable, and delia...being Delia. He was used as something normal to play off all the goofiness
I thought the first act of this film was annoying primarily due to the boyfriend fellow. The second third has the most interesting story aspect (Astrid meeting the lad, and his motives) and the third act is visualy stunning brilliance akin to the original. 4/5 for me.
Speaking of Frozen Empire, I remember a critic said it felt like it was originally written to be a series and at the last minute shortened it down to a movie 🤣
Hey Cody! I dont know if you will ever see this comment but its so weird because you pretty much hit the nail on the coffin with this review. On every review, I always disagree with you at least once or twice or disagree entirely but I still enjoy your thoughts & input. The only reviews I can think of that I agree with 100% is this & Jeepers Creepers Reborn. I really enjoyed this movie up until they rushed the story with Jenna & her love interest & then the movie rushes. I hate the fact we were introduced to an ex wife of BeetleJuice's & yet her arc makes no sense. Why does she suck out souls? Why is she after her ex's soul? We get no reasoning for it. I kid you not you and my mom said the exact same about her. You could delete her scenes & it changes nothing in the movie 😂😂😂. I am so bummed out by this film. It had so much promise & it was rushed & wasted. I really wanted to love this movie. I looked forward to it for over a year, watched the first one yesterday for this one, got my beetlejuice shirt, done my makeup Beetlejuice themed, got Beetlejuice earrings & I was let down. I still had a fun time with my mom but she & I left the movie mixed. Mostly just disappointed.
I think Burton has always been style over substance since his first movie. It's Burtons gothic fantastical style and worlds he creates that makes his films I don't think he's ever been a great story teller. If you go back and watch Burtons 2 Batman movies neither had a great story but they were entertaining.
That's not really fair to say considering Burton didn't write the majority of the films he's directed. He didn't write either of the Batman movies, nor the Beetlejuice movies.
I invested myself. I was not AT ALL disappointed. As a sequel, perfect. As its own thing. I’m down. I didn’t care if I had a back story. I absolutely adored the returning characters and thought this was the best sequel since Evil Dead
I also think it was just okay, which, in fact to me, is a win. My only negatives really are that it started off pretty slow, and then monica belucci's character was really just a plot point and was kind of wasted and not utilized enough.
Monica Bellucci at 59 still looks absolutely stunning! Even with all the stitches 😁 I also felt Frozen Empire vibes. Too much in there that ultimately went nowhere or was resolved too quickly. Also parallels with the befriending dead person twist. Quite similar.
2 things I noticed while watching this movie. 1: they really feel the need to shove Jenna Ortega into everything now ... 2: the way they try to make atheists look simple minded and stupid didn't work at all in the exorcist reboot and it doesn't work here either. Idk what these writers deal is with creating the stereotypical skeptic character who gets proven wrong in the end but there's a reason they can only pull this off in fictional stories lol
Yes about not understanding some of BJs lines and other characters as well! Lots of garbled lines thrown away. And agreed with everything you said about what they did with Lydia’s character and did not like the chaos of storylines with new undeveloped characters
@@Lacey0312 I saw it in Dolby there should have been 0 trouble for any of us to understand what was being said! I was so surprised and disappointed by that
Trash of a film. Glad it wasn't more than 2 hours. I would've ended myself if it was. 3/10. Someone tell Tim Burton not to Ridley Scott any of his other films, especially Sweeney Todd.
I’m almost certain the only reason Monica was in the movie is because she is dating Tim Burton… because you’re right… it could’ve been cut out and would effect the story in no way at all
Add more time to Lydia and her daugther talking to the dad, remove BJ ex girlfriend because she was useless and not that scary or interresting. She wanted revenge on him.... why? To get his magic? To just kill him? Her motivation is not easy to understand! Make a simple plot where Lydia, the aunt and the teen all tried to find Lydia's husband but the ghost kid tries to stole her soul so they have to run away. Beetle can help them by fighting the boy then everyone] joins him; BJ sends him to hell? Sounds like a better climax that what we got 🤨
The opening really was the best scene of the whole movie I was excited to see more of it but they dropped it completely I say take Lydia and her boyfriend and make that a whole movie alone
There was no point of having Lydia have a fiancé boyfriend having a daughter was already too much 😅😅😅😅 the movie needs to only focus on beetlejuice and Lydia like the 1 one
Something I found surprising - although it definitely doesn’t feel like it, Beetlejuice was actually in this film for about the same amount of time as in the original, as Keaton said this was a condition for his return. Shows how good his scenes were, that he only appeared in each movie for about 17 minutes!
Thanks for the review Cody 👌 I love the original. Sadly I hated this legacy sequel. Not funny at all. Jenna way too much screen time and came across as a bore. Beetlejuice was a watered down version. Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin were missed. Also, I was mostly bored. Plus, I wonder if/when Jeffrey Jones will sue for his likeness being used without his permission?
Spoiler. One thing i dont understand is in the first movie, if you end yourself you become a public servant in the afterlife. So why was Astrid's dad a public servant when he didnt end himself, he was eaten by piranhas? I will say some of the story didnt make sense but it was alot of fun to watch.
Have you seen Big Fish? It's one of Burton's films that REALLY doesn't feel like a Burton film. Ewan McGregor is fantastic and I found it to be a really interesting and heartfelt story of a man's life told in a very unique manner. Aside from one sequence with some clear Tim Burton esque machines, you'd be forgiven for thinking someone else directed it. Definitely recommend.
I love Willem Dafoe but why was he here if he wasn’t gonna be an integral part of this movie. I rather he be part of the story rather than throw a few comedic moments. I liked this movie to the point where I’ll have it on mute and just show the images
YES! I’m so glad you mentioned them bits of story that get no exploration and then suddenly end!!! I also wasn’t a fan of what they did with Charles Deetz and Catherine O’Hara. Really didn’t like it especially o’haras fate.
I saw this movie today at a theatre in Playa Vista. The theater was packed which I didn't expect and everyone applauded at the end and when Winona Ryder's name came up on the screen. I liked the movie. It was funny and I rolled with the storyline. This is a must-see flick.
2.75/5 Feels unessasary and adds nothing. Waaaaay too many plot lines going on. Great cast, visuals and the legacy actors fall right back into character
This is the first review I've watched on the movie, and considering I've already put my review out I'm in complete agreement with you Cody. Some of what you've disclosed is what I've said in mine.
It was 'ok,' like you said. Definitely not as funny as the original film, which I found to be one of its biggest weaknesses. Keaton and O'Hara were the best things about the film. I know it's getting to be a pretty cliche 'angry old man' thing to say at this point, but I just don't see the big deal about Ortega. She's fine, but nothing special to me. I didn't even understand the hype about her following the Scream requel whenever everyone was acting like she was going to be 'the next big thing.' I guess they turned out to be correct, but I just didn't and still don't see it. 🤷🏻♂️ I also thought the Jeffrey Jones stuff was bizarre. I know obviously why he wasn't in the film and I get they were attempting to make fun of him...but, I don't see how he wouldn't have gotten a paycheck for the film, despite all that. They used his image and likeness a lot and it was weird they made his character so integral to the plot. I don't care one way or the other, personally, but it was a weird thing to do when they were obviously trying to bash on him.
I'm writing that my name is Josh and i'm writing that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will become available to stream on the streaming service MAX on Friday December 6, 2024. this means that Beetlejuice and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will both be available to stream on the streaming service MAX.
Cody, I know you have not watched Big Fish, which is his best film. With the biggest imagination, best performances in any of his films, and the biggest heart. It was nominated for best film at bafta and at the Oscars for Danny Elfman’s score. It was nominated for lots of things at different award ceremonies. The craziest part is that most people have forgotten it and that’s a real shame.
I think this is one of the best tim burton movies although that might be because i saw it at its world premiere in Venice but I genuinely really enjoyed it
Just got back from the local IMAX. I went to see it after listening to a few reviews and was almost prepared to be disappointed. However, I enjoyed the hell out of this movie, even moreso than the original Beetlejuice! I understand the criticism about the multiple plots but I think it depends on the perspective. To me the main plot that I care about and the movie focuses more on is the relationship between Lydia and Astrid and I loved how it concluded. The rest of the stuff was just cool filler that I still appreciated for the creativity and imagination. This movie was so fun!
Cody, I don't know if you're seeing this too late, but a warning about seeing Speak no Evil. I know you don't like it when films show children being harmed. I'll just leave it at that...
Just watched it. I’ve never ever seen the original. After watching this new one I have no desire to watch the original. Btw, can somebody please explain to me what was the purpose of having William Dafoe in the film? I didn’t care for his character at all! Just have him in the movie for higher marketing? Monica.. cool intro and then what happened? Waste of character. 5/10
I surprisingly loved this movie. The best Tim Burton film since Sweeney Todd IMO. The whole feeling of it had the vibe of the cartoon show from the 90's more so than the first film. It was soo awesomely absurd I think I'm going to go see it again lol.
I dunno if I'm weird, but I like how stuffed the movie is. I like having a lot of bells and whistles and learning all these things about the Neitherworld/Beetlejuice. I guess I just like the movie's hectic energy. I wouldn't say it's my favorite horror comedy, that will probably forever be Bride of Chucky, but I'm 100% gonna watch this again and again and I'm gonna binge the heck out of its OST (especially if they have that soul train song lol).
It was exactly what I thought it would be. And I'm okay with that it was fun and entertaining and I hope they finish it off with a third installment to end the legacy
The way too many characters SERIOUSLY holds this movie back from being great like the original, definitely the most disappointing aspect of the film, Michael Keaton might need back surgery due to how hard he carried the film
Big Fish has always been my favorite Tim Burton Movie. I think because it is his style but not a Gothic Romance style. hard to explain but I highly recommend it.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice suffers from the same problem as Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. It's overstuffed with too many subplots. Consequently the film has a lack of focus and doesn't allow the time and space that any one subplot needs in order to breath or be fully explored. There are just too many unnecessary things packed into the suitcase. I don't know why film makers can't just keep it simple. I think simplicity and simple storytelling is undervalued and underappreciated these days. Some of the best films ever made are very simple stories.
I agree the movie was okay but there were too many plot points. After the movie, I thought the movie should have cut out Beetlejuice's wife because they didn't give her story enough time.

Yikes. Don’t watch a lot of horror comedies do you lol
He said it was fun not funny. U prob aint seen it cause that was the feeling i had. It was a fun movie. Not the best, but still fu. Especially since i expected dog sht. Pleasantly surprised wortha watch.@christophergzimbelman9977
I agreed it was a fun movie.
@@christophergzimbelman9977 I saw Killer Klowns a year ago, relax
@@LyleVSXyle well how the hell would I know? It came out in 1988 😂
You could always just watch the entire Wrong Turn series before watching it… then it’s for sure a masterpiece lol
BOB was so great
@15:28 😂😂😂 "It just really left me with blue balls...." 😂😂😂 That should actually be a movie rating 😂😂😂
This movie is chaotic and does have too many characters probably. You know what, though, I didn't mind it. I really enjoyed this movie and liked it more than I thought I would. Pleasantly suprised.
The one scene when his eyes pop out of his head, Large Marge from the pee wees big adventure lol instant throwback
i hated how they focused on jeffery jones character the whole time. he was not that important of a character in the first movie but they made him the center in this one more than beetlejuice.
It makes sense though . Remember in the original the Maitlands were playing the straight man to the zaniness. Without them, and with jenny Ortegas character being unlikable, and delia...being Delia. He was used as something normal to play off all the goofiness
Yeah and they’re paying a pedo for using his likeness, his picture didn’t need to be on the tombstone
Yeah, it felt really sort of gross to me especially with Jones being a pedophile.
RIP Bob
I thought the first act of this film was annoying primarily due to the boyfriend fellow. The second third has the most interesting story aspect (Astrid meeting the lad, and his motives) and the third act is visualy stunning brilliance akin to the original. 4/5 for me.
Speaking of Frozen Empire, I remember a critic said it felt like it was originally written to be a series and at the last minute shortened it down to a movie 🤣
Frozen empire was sht. If u were entertained it says a lot about you.
@@splatterhousecorrupt8520 I don't recall saying I liked it, but thanks for your precious words.
@@splatterhousecorrupt8520 And your obnoxious comment says a lot about you
@@splatterhousecorrupt8520smoke weed dude, anything is entertaining
@@SlasherIncorporated That's true but it's a pattern for everything he's directed minus Ed Wood which is his best.
Big Fish is Burton’s best film.
It’s up there for sure.
I love that movie ❤
Nah
Nah from a technical standpoint it's Ed wood
Personal fav is Beetlejuice or Edward scissorhands
I invested myself. I was not AT ALL disappointed. As a sequel, perfect. As its own thing. I’m down. I didn’t care if I had a back story. I absolutely adored the returning characters and thought this was the best sequel since Evil Dead
I also think it was just okay, which, in fact to me, is a win. My only negatives really are that it started off pretty slow, and then monica belucci's character was really just a plot point and was kind of wasted and not utilized enough.
Thumbnail is awesome
i thought Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was a very good movie and so much fun and entertaining and a good script to
Monica Bellucci at 59 still looks absolutely stunning! Even with all the stitches 😁
I also felt Frozen Empire vibes. Too much in there that ultimately went nowhere or was resolved too quickly. Also parallels with the befriending dead person twist. Quite similar.
love the original and came out really enjoying this. Wanted more of Delores though 😢
Same here.
That makes me feel better because I was questioning my own ability to hear and comprehend😅
@@Lacey0312 I saw it in Dolby there should have been 0 trouble for any of us to understand what was being said! I was so surprised and disappointed by that
Agree with your assessment of the movie. I did enjoy the brief Danny Devito cameo though!
Trash of a film. Glad it wasn't more than 2 hours. I would've ended myself if it was. 3/10. Someone tell Tim Burton not to Ridley Scott any of his other films, especially Sweeney Todd.
Thanks for reviewing this movie cody. I always enjoy your videos and I think you're very good at what you do keep it up.
I’m almost certain the only reason Monica was in the movie is because she is dating Tim Burton… because you’re right… it could’ve been cut out and would effect the story in no way at all
Given that it had a lot of plots, I thought it handled them well. It’s harder to make it as well-paced if the movie was much longer.
@@ladypool1404 Beetlejuice works better without a deeper story. Just looks into how things work. At least the first didn’t want to have deeper plots
Great movie despite being overstuffed! Michael Keaton saves the film.
As I was watching this film, I felt it just wasn’t doing it for me. You summed up the reasons why pretty well.
Something I found surprising - although it definitely doesn’t feel like it, Beetlejuice was actually in this film for about the same amount of time as in the original, as Keaton said this was a condition for his return. Shows how good his scenes were, that he only appeared in each movie for about 17 minutes!
Love that American warewolf in London T-shirt!
Thanks for the review Cody 👌
I love the original.
Isn't Jones in jail?
@@Karmapolice98 He wasn’t in jail. He got probation, and had to register as a sex offender for the rest of his miserable life.
Spoiler.
One thing i dont understand is in the first movie, if you end yourself you become a public servant in the afterlife. So why was Astrid's dad a public servant when he didnt end himself, he was eaten by piranhas?
I will say some of the story didnt make sense but it was alot of fun to watch.
Good point! I want to guess it's just a glaring plot hole
Boy, if there is one thing I can count on when watching your video brotha. YOU GOT THEE SICKEST SHIRT COLLECTION 🤣😂🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
He was one of the best parts for me, hands down.
Great intro Cody!
2.75/5
Feels unessasary and adds nothing.
I also thought the Jeffrey Jones stuff was bizarre.
I agree 100% with you. That being said it was amazing at certain points and a solid fun movie. I plan on watching it again.
What did you do for 3131 this year
Cody, I know you have not watched Big Fish, which is his best film.
Very underrated.
Big fish is awful. I really wanted to like it, but it was so pretty, so just plain bad
Tim burtons best movies are Ed wood, beetlejuice, and Edward scissorhands.
Big fish is fine, it’s very pretentious imo.
I think this is one of the best tim burton movies although that might be because i saw it at its world premiere in Venice but I genuinely really enjoyed it
Nice to see that in the last 36 years Burton has been sharpening his story skills..... nah, just kidding.
Burton's never written a screenplay. He's only come up with the concept and characters for a few of his films
I personally loved the sequel
the original is twice as good as the new one. I recommend watching it.
The original is obviously better…
I surprisingly loved this movie. The best Tim Burton film since Sweeney Todd IMO. The whole feeling of it had the vibe of the cartoon show from the 90's more so than the first film. It was soo awesomely absurd I think I'm going to go see it again lol.
love the t shirt were did you get it?
Tim Burton has lost his touch a long time ago. The last good movie he directed is probably Sweeney Todd...
Bob should have lived
Good review fella! Keep it up! 🤘
Great review bro
Big Fish has always been my favorite Tim Burton Movie. I think because it is his style but not a Gothic Romance style. hard to explain but I highly recommend it.
As someone who loves Tim Burton I agree that Big Fish is one of his best films. Personally I think his best film is Ed Wood.
Billy crudup is in it :)
Tim Burton's best film is Big Fish. Sleepy Hollow was fun and aesthetic but nothing Burton does is that good
This movie was awful. I went in with low hopes, and I left borderline angry.
Same. The conflict of the movie was resolved in less than 10 minutes. Like...how lazy can you be?!
Same here. This is the first time I ever went into a movie not understanding why I'm going to see it. Wish I hadn't
Awesome intro Cody 👏
Don't worry Cody. Next week is Friday the 13th. Help is on the way. 😎
