    A whole season of Dexter being on the run with a manhunt full of his old friends from miami metro and other characters we know would have been so insane I cannot comprehend why they didn't decide to go down that route.

      Because that's a risky choice that would have taken good writers to pull off and they didn't have that. So for all later seasons they went a conservative route with a shitty story that doesn't commit to anything and that's why they were trash.

      These popular TV shows should always get a few hardcore fans to be in the writers room. They always tend to come up with better and more coherent storylines. Seriously Showtime shouldve just picked a few RUclipsrs like Cody, Sean chandler and Jeremy jahns to help the writers out. A good example is Cobra Kai which is a show that is actually written by a few hardcore fans.

    I respected that with New Blood they tried a different style and tone, but they didn’t replace it with anything equally compelling. The original run had such a unique flavor to it with the quirky humor, iconic musical score, consistent narration, little bouts of surrealism. Then New Blood just kinda looks and feels like any other “prestige” cable show nowadays. It made Dexter not feel special anymore.

    • @ARBLACKx
      @ARBLACKx 2 года назад +10

      I was thinking the same as well. They brought Dexter back for a revival and completely changed everything. Got rid of all the core elements of the OG show we loved and replaced it with Dexter being an idiot, Harrison and Dexter arguing all the time and pointless high school/teenager bullsh't. Seriously the original run never had any teenage filler and New Blood had so much of it was really frustrating. Even all the side characters were sh't no one measures up to Deb, Batista, Masuka, Doakes, Matthews heck even Quinn and Laguerta lol.
      The small town was really boring and should not have been the setting of the show. I get it they can't do it in Miami but I reckon LA would've been a good setting for the revival. That city has so many people that no one notices so its easy to hide and make a new identity there whilst doing his Dexter thing.

    • @ThePreciseClimber

      A lot of sub-plots in OG Dexter also weren't particularly compelling. I mean, did people REALLY care about that guy Deb dated in Season 3, for example? Or Batista and LaGuerta's romance drama?

    While I agree that adding the ''Deb in love with Dexter'' storyline in season 6 was unnecessary, actually it made sense. For me at least. I always suspected that there was something more behind their relationship other than regular brother-sister love. Jennifer Carpenter, revealed to Red Carpet News TV she always knew Deb was in love with Dexter on some level, so she played it like that from the start. I noticed the signs. Just a few examples that came to mind now: In season 2 Deb described to Dexter how loud she could be during sex while Dexter was embarrassed by the subject; In season 3 after Deb got a new hairstyle and Dexter praised it, telling her it was ''beautiful'' Deb suddenly became all shy if not blushed, BUT the most hilarious scene was when in season 2 Deb walked into the room where Dexter lay naked on the bed after he just had sex with Lila and had to cover himself quickly, because Deb stood there and talked - Dexter even asked: ''Deb, did knocking occur to you?'' :D

    • @dinglbarry1275
      @dinglbarry1275 2 года назад +4

      I was completely surprised and shocked when it happened. I scoffed when the psychiatrist insinuated it, only for it to be true. It wasn't a deal breaker for me, but on the first watch that storyline bugged me. I initially believed and I still do, that they added it to justify Deb not turning Dexter in, which bugs me because it wasn't necessary. I don't believe for a second that this was the intention all along, but as a hypothetical lets say that it was... I guarantee that the reasoning behind it was... how she could justify not turning him in after finding out who he was. It serves no other purpose besides that and that purpose wasn't necessary. She even let the surviving barrel girl and her vigilante partner go, which is essentially the same principle. On rewatched that storyline doesn't detract from the show.

    • @bjt-lz1jl
      @bjt-lz1jl 2 года назад

      @@dinglbarry1275 people blow that story line up like it was an entire season long. It was literally about 25 minutes of plot that motivated Dep to track dexter down at the church and led to her discovering his killing.

    • @dinglbarry1275
      @dinglbarry1275 2 года назад +1

      @@bjt-lz1jl - I’m not against Deb being in love with Dexter, if it was necessary to drive a particular storyline forward, but it’s perplexing given that the future storyline would be the same either way. Deb already proved that she wouldn’t turn Dexter in the moment she let the two unbeknownst to her vigilante killers go at the end of season 5. Then finding out that her father was aware of it and helped create it is just one more reason. In all actuality the notion of Deb even contemplating turning Dexter in seems far fetched. In general people tend to rationalize things when it comes to themselves and the people they care about. A true dilemma for her would be if she found out that Dexter was merely a serial killer killing random people, but killing bad people would be easy for her to rationalize given everything.
      And sure it only consumed a very small portion of the story, which once again is baffling since the idea of having your lead and second lead character of s TV series pronounce their love for the other after 6 seasons (siblings or not). That’s a cornerstone moment of any show, regardless of how it’s utilized beyond that. As I said this doesn’t negatively impact the overall show for me… I consider it a miner misstep that I overlook and even now accept as I watch the series a gazillion times around.

    9. New Blood- Good season but the final episode ruined it for me.
    8. Season 6- I was spoiled to the big reveal that Colin Hanks's character had already killed his professor and was pretending to be him after I watched episode 2. So it tainted the season for me but I still enjoyed it.
    7. Season 8- Didn't like what they did with Harry's code but Charlotte Rampling was a good addition for the most part.
    6. Season 7- Great season with a great main plot as well as a awesome side story for Quinn.
    5. Season 3- Miguel was a solid villain and friend for Dexter. Love Dexter's daydream when he realizes Miguel used him and he destroys his office. Very funny.
    4. Season 1- Perfect start to the show. Brian Moser was a unique character among Dexter's enemies. The way he planted clues only Dexter would see.
    3. Season 5- I love season 5 I think it's a perfect follow up to season 4 with Dexter trying to find a reason to keep going after Rita's tragic death. He thinks about leaving Miami and becoming a full time killer in another city but finds reasons to stay.
    2. Season 4- Just an awesome season start to finish.
    1. Season 2- Perfect season for me. Doakes may have been the good guy in their rivalry but I think he is Dexter's biggest enemy. Every other villain for the most part Dexter has had a friendly relationship with them at some point Trinity, Miguel. But Doakes has always disliked and suspected Dexter, they've never gotten along. Which just makes Dexter's victory over him even better.

      He really should never have said that. By saying something like that you turn the most unexpected ending into the most expected ending. When you say something like that, people will automatically rule out the obvious endings and start expecting some twist shock value and in this case, it was super obvious. The biggest problem though is not the ending itself but how we got there and how disconnected it felt.

    4 - SE03 (kind of a downgrade from SE02, but still entretained the hell out me with the whole "Dexter gets a friend" storyline)
    5 - SE05 (a season that had alot to live up to after what many people would consider the most shocking main character death on a TV show, but they pulled it off nicely, giving a satisfying resolution to the whole drama of Rita's death, and indroducing a great new character, Lumen)
    6 - SE07 (really can't understand why people think this season is so good, dispite having some nice moments, it just felt like a bad fan fic)
    7 - SE09 (New Blood) (it felt even more superflous than the last 3 seasons of the show's original run, and an even dumber ending, i wont put it bellow seasons 6 and 8 because the first 3 episodes had some really nice moments)
    8 - SE06 (don't know what the hell they were thinking LOL, only good ep. was the one with Brian)
    9 - SE08 (absolute dogshit, every single episode, it made me wish they had cancelled the show after season 5)

    To me Dexter was really at its best in its first two seasons. The first season is just so intriguing that it’s hard to turn away from.
    Season two ramps up the tension and has a lot of moments where you wonder how he’s going to get away with things.
    After that I still enjoy the show, but I think especially in hindsight knowing how things play out I enjoy the seasons less. Season three is fun because of Miguel, but overall is a bit of a dip in quality.
    As much as I like season four it kind of is really the beginning of the end. Trinity is great, but this is really kind of the point with the show where looking at the remaining seasons you realize how much of a nosedive the show takes.
    The remaining seasons aren’t the best. Season five has its moments. I agree if Deb had found out about Dexter this season it would have made it better.
    Season six onwards I don’t care much about. I still will watch those seasons of the show if it’s on, but the show lost itself at the end and just was never able to reach its heights again. Every time I thought it might redeem itself it found a way to fuck something up continually.

    My list is pretty much the same as yours, except I have New Blood ahead of Season 6. The Doomsday stuff was just too much for me, I was not surprised that the professor was already dead, and the whole Deb/Dexter "relationship" thing just put me off. As for New Blood, I actually didn't mind the very end -- not that it was awesome, but I understood why it had to end that way. Also, the next to last episode, The Family Business, was one of the best Dexter episodes in the entire series. Overall that's enough for me to put NB ahead of S6.

The whole origin story of Dexter, the childhood flashbacks, the interesting camera angles, the dark comedy, the introduction of the characters,…. They were all so good in season 1. My second favorite season is 4. It’s a phenomenal season. I loved it. Then season 3, then 2. I really appreciate your insights. And you articulate them so well. Great job!

    I was only disappointed with season 5 because it’s as if Dexter went and moved on from Rita’s death in the very first episode. I felt that this should have been the season that his anger and regret of not killing Trinity sooner gets the best of him and he starts becoming a much less neat monster. His ritual starts becoming more hasty, he’s not cleaning up after himself like he used too (sort of like new blood), cracks of the Bay Harbor Butcher are starting to seep through that Miami metro starts catching wind. And this would eventually lead to Deb at the end of the season, finding out who he is.

    Great review!
    I personally loved S7 first, because it was so intense back in 2013 or when it was released. After rewatch, I realized it's really bad season :D It feels very rushed, like Debra finding out Dexter killed Travis in one episode, that he's BHB in the next episode and then accepted it's ok, because he killed Spiltzer in the next... like what... you can't do such a story parkour :D And the season also changed what Dexter's Dark Passanger is... it was some sort of hobby before, but suddenly it's heroin-like addiction and when he stops, he suddenly have fantasies about murdering people... what..? Since when it does work like that. I wouldn't mind if there was a season when he would decide to stop killing and realize it's an addiction, but it has to be his decision, not Debra telling him to do so. Hannah didn't work for me neither, because I think he had much better chemistry with Lumen.
    S6 - I hated the religious things... I wouldn't mind if we have a season where Dexter explores religion and his own beliefs, but it has to be one of the first ones... Not after his wife was murdeded and such... It felt unrealistic he would even try to understand religion after all that bad things that happened to him.
    S2 - not bad season, but it should have happened so much later that Dexter is exposed
    S5 - is great IMO. They got rid of the previous storylines quickly (children, Rita's dead) and focused on the Barrel gang... it felt too quick, but overall it was great. I love how he found the one barrel and then raised the flashlight to reveal there is a whole collection of them in the pond. It always gives me chills... and the chemistry with Lumen was very natural. Great season... people hate it, but I love it.
    S1 - is the best... I think it's even better than S4 in my opinion... The story is very complex, each episode is like a little storyline, like it's own small story and Dexter learns something new in each episode. The fact it looks like boring criminal investigation in the first episode, but then boom.. it's personal, the killer knows about Dexter!... and then how he threw the human head on his car... ha ha. Each plot-twist is delivered in a very smart way... side stories are interesting too for most parts and eventually connects the mains story dots... for example the psychologist plot is a side story but eventually it helps Dexter to remember what happened to him in the container. I also love it's based on the first book, but they made great changes, when they cut bad ideas from the book and used their own, better ones. Also the first book was full of strange dreams that Dexter had about his brother and I like they cut it for the show. S1 is simply 10/10

    I consider the first 5 seasons really good. Most say the first 4 seasons but I didn't really feel a drop in quality until S6. I got into the show just as S4 ended. New Blood should have had more urgency and not treated like another season of Dexter focusing on the big bad. Maybe the story line of season 2 with the focus of S7. I dunno anymore... My ranking is
    9) S8
    8) S6
    7) S7
    6) New Blood (hated the direction at the end)
    5) S5 (basically tied with S3)

    Season 7 is very VERY underrated. The Spelzer scenes were exciting, and his death scene was probably my favorite of all time for humor reasons (my most rewatched scene in Dexter series, beside Masuka's Season 5 crime scene analysis of storage container double murder scene). Sirko was absolutely mesmerizing and bad-ass at the same time, and that cat & mouse game between him and Dexter was brilliant from both ends. And Hanna was my favorite of all the women in Dexter's life- the most calm and centered, most understanding, most intelligent, and least whiny/annoying.

    Honestly from worst to best I’d rank them 8, 9, 6, 3, 1, 5, 2, 7, 4
    I found season 7 to be more intense than the Lundy investigation on the cop side, very interesting with the dynamic between Deb and Dexter, Isaak Sirko honestly rivaling Trinity in terms of how interesting he was as an antagonist albeit with less of a dynamic with Dexter. If the Romance between Dexter and Hannah was a bit more organic I’d rank it number 1 but i found it weirdly forced initially. I was absolutely shocked he would let her go as i didn’t see any chemistry between them beforehand apart from the 1 scene leading up to it. A bigger twist than Doomsday tbh.

    • @Gigibaby88

      Sirko was awesome though I really loved Lundy too. Apples and oranges to me really. But yeah couldn't agree more about Hannah and the lack of chemistry btwn them but I feel like it's more coming from her end b/c I think Michael C Hall had pretty solid chemistry with the rest of his leading ladies (w/ the exception of Angela maybe). Hannah just had all the charisma of a wet sponge IMO 🧽 😒

    I don't even know if I can choose for top fave- season 1 or 4. Both are fantastic and set a high bar for any season to follow. Both Arthur/Trinity and Rudy/Brian/Ice Truck were equally fantastic as the lead villain. Season 1 had novelty on its side while 4 had the depth of Dexter evolving. The storylines were equally great. It's so hard to choose. I might just go with 1 if for no other reason than you get to learn who Dexter is, where he comes from, and his complex life with fresh virgin eyes. Although season 4 DID have the Kruger and ex-boxer kill scenes...

    6:35 Dexter not killing for a decade and being sloppy because of it, Kurt's storyline, exploring Harrison's urges was good until they went from "He's like Dexter" to "Oh no he's normal and is just angry at his dad for abandoning him" despite framing Ethan for a school shooting as an excuse to attack him, breaking the wrestling team bully's arm and going after him and his friends with a razor proving otherwise. I liked episode 9 with Dexter teaching Harrison the Code with the flashback to an unseen Miami kill of Dexter's and the like but imaginary Deb, Harrison spending most of his screentime being whiny and defensive whenever Dexter tried to talk to him, Angela seemingly having 2 personalities where one was a great cop who solved the Bay Harbour Butcher case and the other being an idiot who couldn't solve a murder case she'd been obsessed with for 25 years that her best friend was the first victim of and when she finally had Kurt, the killer himself dead to rights she believed a sob story he told and let him go, Audrey just existing to be Harrison's girlfriend and nothing else and the ending sucked.

    I think my personal favourite season has to be SE02, i was completely hooked on it from start to finish. Lundy was so badass in that season and every episode it seemed like he was closing in on Dexter only to end up being outsmarted by him, not to mention Doakes going completely off the rails, and Lila was so sexy and chaotic too. All those conflicts surrouding Dexter were exciting as hell to watch. Sure the last episode was kinda dumb, with Lila killing Doakes instead of letting Dexter decide, but the season was SO GREAT up until that point that i was able to forgive the lazy writting at the end.

    I really enjoyed your opinions in this video! Thanks for it!
    I view New Blood as an alternative ending. Given that the timeline is botched. Harrison would’ve been something like 12 going on 13 according to Dexter Wiki Fandom. New Blood takes place late 2021 and he is born April 2009.
    Plus in earlier seasons Dexter has said things along the lines of; “I’d rather everyone found out what I am then my family dead.” and “I don’t want darkness for Harrison.”
    S 6 is my least favorite, but I like Deb finding out about Dexter in the end.
    7 is ok, I like Deb knowing and having to deal.
    8 has it’s moments, but I don’t like that Vogel was part of making “the code”. Also unnecessary for Deb to be killed of.
    1-5 are my favorites.
    But I feel it’s a shame Rita dies, I know many people don’t like her. But I feel like she grounds the series.
    I would have liked either a big manhunt at the end or Dexter somehow really turning over a new leaf for Harrison, being rid of “the dark passenger”-like Lumen was.
