    It always amazes me how easily people forget the very first bits of information that's shown: the Nostromo is a big-a$$ factory / refinery for mineral ore. The "rain" inside the ship is just leaking pipes. 😄
    Also: when they land, that is not the whole ship (the factory / refinery), just a smaller ship, and what causes all that malfunction is the fact that they land on a very rocky, uneven ground, which damages their landing gear and other systems connected to it.

    • @arifeannor9573
      @arifeannor9573 10 месяцев назад +4

      How do you know its broken pipes and not condensation? Sure the ship is insulated but its not going to be heated to a nice 70-80 degrees or so, they have clothes for a reason. I can imagine warmer air traveling up and hitting objects that are cool enough to gather condensation for water to drip down. It was a big area up above.

    The ship is huge & cavernous & sealed from outerspace. That would produce a lot of condensation. Think about how much condensation you get overnight in a tent or a camper.

    Kid’s a good guesser! Not so predictable in 1979, but this movie was hugely influential on movies that came later. Like Halloween came out in the late 70’s and launched an entire industry of slasher movies. Now movies are like, “Here are the rules to survive a horror movie,” so the genre has become self-aware of its predictability.
    Gen Z has decades of movies now that they don’t know exist, but which form the basis of modern cinema. But back in the day, these were original. Now it’s remakes and sequels.

    • @VOMITQUEEN
      @VOMITQUEEN 3 месяца назад +1

      Sadly, yeah
      I feel kind of bad for the younger generations growing up in recent times because modern cinema kinda sucks (for the most part) I miss originality and am so sick of remakes, reboots, and sequels 😔
      I feel like the film industry after 2005-2010 kind of lost its way (obviously there are many exceptions and you’ll get the modern classic from time to time, but I wish they were the norm instead) I was born in the early 90s so I was technically still around to see cinema in the last of its glory days when I was a kid before it became saturated with over the top CGI (which has come a long way, I’m not knocking it, just only when it’s overdone and carries the entirety of a film instead of the story and characters) and loaded with uninspired reboots of pre-established franchises to get people spending money (I think those god awful Disney remakes and countless Star Wars films/ Marvel movies are the worst offenders lmao)
      Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn’t care about taking risks and making anything new anymore, they only care about making money
      Which is why I prefer independent films when it comes to anything made in the modern day.

    If your attitude is "anything before 2000 was bullshit" then why bother watching anything at all? All movies (and shows) post 2000 are referencing stuff from the 90s and before... so wouldnt it all be tainted? Also, you're just gonna miss some some of the coolest stuff ever made.

    One thing that answers the question of 'Why would Kane go down & look at the eggs?' Is made clearer in the book- The Space Suit he was wearing was more Combat Armor than simple protection from the elements. The Glass-Like Helmet was made of a material stronger than Steel. Most people, when outfitted like that, would be a lot more willing to expose themselves to potentially dangerous situations. It would have been nice for the film to at least give a tiny bit of exposition about that, given how many people question his actions.

Better to keep it internal and not sending people who you may not want to die to figure out if its anything good, whether the alien killed them or not, small chance if it was anything they really wanted and wanted to keep secret they probably would of killed the crew anyways. So a small group inside the company did this, and soon as they mentioned it, you got more people that know, more chances to lose control of it.

    This blew me away as someone from Gen Y. Green screen was still in relative infancy from the 70s all the way through the 90s, and blue screen was the norm at the period this film released. Even these days, greenscreen and CG is painfully obvious to anyone who has taken even a basic cinema course.
    Films before the 00s had to, by necessity, make more use of practical effects than they do today - take Jurassic Park back in 1993. The CG effects are extremely dated, but they used animatronics and puppetry for close-up shots and shots where actors would physically touch the creatures. And honestly, the puppetry - while aged - still holds up today. I respect Alien and Aliens precisely because of them being primarily practical effects.

    Ah yes, everyone knows about evil aliens today thanks to this movie. It had such a larger impact back then. someone has to be first & invent it. Someone has to Keyser Söze. Like i still watch the old 1964 "The Last Man on Earth" (I Am Legend) as it kinda has that first kinda "Zombies" vibes even thou they are technically slow stumbling vampires. Perhaps its kinda comical to watch today, but Vincent Price can certainly perform "being alone & slowly going mad" really well. A little sad how fast paced movies has all become, well everything has become. I mean watching something like Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai or The Hidden Fortress (aka the one that inspired Star Wars). But are way to long, slow & has actual exposition. Not that fastpaced cant be done right. Like Bullettrain was a nice surprice. But that is sadly the rare exception.

Widely considered by most to be the best Sci-Fi film ever made before '2001: A Space Odyssey'. From a social perspective, they'll likely be a lot that seems problematic, but special-effects wise, the film holds up shockingly well (being 67 years old). Advanced computers are going to have flashing lights everywhere? Close, it's the dash lights in your car that are flashing everywhere, as you're limping to the dealership in 'safe mode'. & As part of the Dad side of things, I gotta say, love this, you guys are great. You have a new sub.

      That's a great question. I watched a reaction to The Thing last night from a horror art person. She was in shock and awe over the practical effects. I wonder as well if this is something that gets passed down or is slowly being phased out due to CG.

      They need to bring back those skills. Stop relying so heavily on cgi that it looks unrealistic and crappy. Start blending the 2 again like they did in LOTR and Jurassic Park.
      Practical effects are largely part of what scared the crap out of us back then. The monsters, etc looked real enough to touch.

    • @maxducoudray
      @maxducoudray 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@toodlescaeThere are some people committed to practical effects and sets, like Christopher Nolan and most recent Star Wars content. But it would be nice if it were the norm, because it often looks better and produces better performances by immersing the actors.

    Thorens opinion seems a little typical of his age. There were so many classic and amazing movies made before 2000. If anything, since 2000 there has been a shift with dvd and streaming and it been easier to make and distribute a film, there have been way more awful and ridiculous movies made than ever before. I mean, there are like 6 or 7 Sharknado movies, they are popular with a certain demographic. I’m personally not a fan of CGI and with a few exceptions, it usually looks pretty fake and detracts from the movie as a whole. Alien, especially because it came out in 1979, is a masterpiece of film. If you can’t see that or appreciate its impact on movie making and even popular culture then you’re blind to so much. Alien is in my top ten horror and sci-fi, if not the top five. Amazing movie… ok, I’ll get off my high horse now. Good day, sir.

      How about that Hipster Horror, Black-and-White movies? "Casablanca" (1942) has it all: Humor, Romance, Drama.
      Too old? "C'mon C'mon" (2021) may change your mind. Getting back to post World War II movies, "Psycho" (1960) is top-of-his-game Alfred Hitchcock. "Raging Bull" and "The Elephant Man" (1980) are prime greyscale movies.
