@@WereintheBasement awesome. It hits the sweet spot for me. Evolving into a tonal blend of STTOS and the more serious DS9, with the later seasons swaying that way. The organic evolution of the team's dynamic is the icing on the cake though.

I find it weird that the first thing you assumed about Shau'ri is that she was a "working woman".
The first thing I thought of is that she was offered as a concubine/wife. There was the ritual of accepting drinking water. There was the ritual of Daniel being washed.
Many cultures in the past did things like that.
And if not offering as a wife - a young woman sleeping with a stranger was a good way to get new genes into the population. Especially populations that were isolated and risked inbreeding.

"Give my regards to King Tut, asshole."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of French Stewart.
Animal Wangler Fact: The horse-like creatures on the planet were real horses with external costumes draped over them. Dogs were also used.
Location Location Fact: The first scene set in contemporary times was filmed at the Park Plaza Hotel. The interior scenes were filmed in a converted aircraft hanger in California, 500 ft wide and 50 ft high allowing for some of the most gigantic film sets ever made to be created.
Practical Over CGI Fact: The city on the alien planet Abydos, which appears to be very large, was a miniature placed on a dune, with each course of buildings being only about four feet tall. Ra's (Jaye Davidson) glowing-eye effect was added in post-production, because test audiences didn't think that he was alien enough. This trait was continued in Stargate SG-1 (1997), as an identifier to people who are taken over by the Goa'uld.
The Rest Of The Story Fact: The early pre-release screenings of the movie were disastrous. The percentage of the audience who liked the movie fell into the mid-30s, and executive producer Mario Kassar realized the main problem was that the plot made zero sense. His solution: have the Ra character's dialogue subtitled, and made into information that presented a clear storyline. When these changes were made, the subsequent test screenings produced an overwhelming majority of positive reviews, and this carried the movie into becoming one of the surprise hits of fall 1994.

A very fun movie. The TV series retcons some of the plot points but maintains the same basic concepts. I liked the series better.
21:05 "She can read and write" "We have a witch!" hahaha
EDIT - Oh your question about why did they include in the beginning of the story that Jack's son had killed himself? The Air Force knew this would be a man who would volunteer for a suicide mission if it was to save Earth. They needed someone who wouldn't hesitate to trigger the bomb.

11:27 Combinatorics leads to surprisingly large numbers. Yeah, there are 7 symbols in a gate address, but that's out of a larger set of possible symbols. I'm using a bit of information that isn't clear in the movie, but these gates have a total of 39 symbols. It also stands to reason that repetitions are not allowed in addresses, otherwise you would have the same symbol sometimes used for two different endpoints in the system that uses them to define the lines that intersect at the destination point, which can't work. Therefore, we're talking about permutations of 7 out of 39, of which there are a total of 77,519,922,480.
This doesn't really explain why they couldn't figure out the address to dial _to_ Abydos, though, despite having had decades to try. They already knew 6 of the symbols and their order, since they had identified them from the cartouche, and somehow they also knew one more was needed. If they assumed it's either a prefix or a suffix, that means they only needed to try 78 possibilities, which they could do in 2 or 3 hours with the technology in the base. (It's also possible to do it without all of said technology, but it's not as easy.)

I'm excited to start SG-1 and really learn more about this system and how it works and operates and what other species utilize it. I feel like the movie was a fun watch, but it doesn't really showcase "Stargate" as much as it does Abydos and Ra. I think there's a lot for us to learn, like I have no concept of how many gates are even out there lol It could be 2, it could 1000. Thanks for the info though and the comment! Feel free to help us out along the way with SG1!

@@WereintheBasement "it doesn't really showcase "Stargate" as much as it does Abydos and Ra."
Yeah, the TV series have plenty of people in less advanced civilizations like Abydos, but also plenty of time to develop all the other aspects.
Just a heads up: the series do retcon a few things from the movie (beyond having the same characters played by different actors, I mean). If it's something you care about at all, hopefully it will be less confusing if you're aware of this.

SG-1 then Atlantis. In the canon timeline Atlantis starts several years after SG-1.

@@conqueringflower7466 there's a couple of episodes that take place across both series (the Pegasus project, for example). So SGA seasons 1 and 2 are not after but concurrent with seasons 8 and 9 of SG-1 respectively (and indeed they were broadcast that way, I remember watching them alongside as they were broadcast).

4 seasons of Battlestar Galactica was for a reason, it started good but it got worse and worse as it went on, I personally quit after the first 2 seasons then forced my self for the last 2 cringe seasons. that's why such a short life, not enough viewership and why I won't consider it better than Startrek series or Stargate series.
Would love for you both to watch the series but a warning, not many reactors finish it because it's 10 seasons plus 2 other shows and 2 other movies to continue that story. That makes this a huge commitment as to compared to Battlestar Galactica

I completely agree about BSG going downhill as the seasons went on, I was disappointed by the ending, but still love the show as a whole. I've rewatched Star Trek TNG, Ds9, Voyager and even Enterprise (Just not as much as the other 3).
Stargate is a huge undertaking for sure, but we are excited to start and check out an entire new sci-fi universe/fandom that we practically know nothing about.
