This is a standalone movie. It wasn't a pilot to a TV show, nor did the original film makers play a role in the creation of the TV show. The TV show "Stargate SG-1" is based on the movie and continues the storyline at first but soon develops its own universe - literally. It starts small and then gets bigger... and bigger... and bigger. It is a definite recommendatiion. Babylon 5, Star Trek, and Stargate are my holy trinity of sci-fi franchises.

@Anonymous One No. They pick up some time after the end of the movie and then go new ways.

There are definite differences in the two that force them into different universes. One major difference is, when they tracked the probe to it's destination when it was sent through the gate. Catherine specifically says it's on the other side of the known universe after Barbara Shore says it is in another galaxy. In the Stargate SG-1 universe, the gate on earth simply does not have the ability to dial a destination in another galaxy. They spend several seasons visiting destinations in just our corner of the milky way. In addition, the planet they visited in the film is many times mentioned by name in the show as being within our own quadrant of the milky way, not on the far side of the universe.
In many ways, the series is a continuation of the film, but these differences have always bugged me a little.
I still love the movie and all of the series, if R Knights start watching them don't leave out Stargate: Universe, my favorite of them, though it was unceremoniously cancelled after just 2 seasons, I still thought it was great. It was a little grittier than the other series, it felt a bit more real, character wise.

I think the implication was more that their improvised dialing + gate power system was not capable of intergalactic dialing.

Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich (the film’s writers) did have plans for a Stargate trilogy, but studio politics killed the sequels, and MGM opted for the tv show instead. Devlin was angry for years that they kept him and Emmerich out of the loop like that. He described it as “Watching someone else raise your kids. You’re glad to see that they grew up, but at the same time you’re upset that you didn’t get to raise them yourself.”

I am sure the commenters here can answer many of your questions, but if you are planning to watch the TV series, those answers would be considered spoilers for things that are slowly revealed over several seasons. (It's more fun to watch without knowing what happens.) Without spoiling anything, I can say that there was no sequel movie to this movie. The TV series "Stargate SG-1" picks up right where this movie ended (with brand new actors recast in the roles), and there were a few Direct-to-DVD movies that followed up after the TV series ended. Additionally, there were two spinoff shows, "Stargate Atlantis" and Stargate Universe". There are rumors that the series will be brought back in some form in order to clean up some loose ends of plots that were left hanging when "Stargate Universe" was canceled earlier than the writers expected. So far, none of those rumors have panned out, but it is not for lack of trying.

Just have to add my voice to those recommending the series, Stargate is easily one of the best sci fi franchises of the genre and well worth the watch. What really makes the show stand out is the humor, which is never over the top and is the perfect blend of being self deprecating, self aware, sarcastic and witty.
They also do a far better job of incorporating real world scientific principles and math into the series than most shows or movies. Another great series for that, that does an even better job, is the series Numb3rs, which also has a great ensemble cast and an amazing writing team behind it, it also does a far better job of illustrating the difficulties and eccentricities often found in those with high IQ's, without being insulting or relying on stereotypes.

If you can't spare the time to do a watch through of so many seasons of Stargate SG1, then at least cover the first episode as it will answer a lot of your questions and give you a much better idea of how they were going to get a series to work, in comparison to the film version.

The Series and its spinoffs (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, plus tv movies Ark of Truth, Continuum, plus web series Origins, plus animated series Infinity) are a big franchise to get into. I recommend it, they're highly entertaining, but realize its a big commitment to do a reaction to the entirety of it (SG-1 alone is 10 seasons, over 200 episodes). If you do decide to react to them, I think the best way is release order, which gets a little complicated as Atlantis and SG-1 ran at the same time for a few years and there were crossovers between them.

The series picks up right where the movie left off. Not the next day, mind you, but it picks up that O'Neill (Two L's in the TV show) has returned and Daniel has not. And it was like that for a while. But then, the mothballed Stargate all of a sudden one day activates. And that's where the series starts. Please consider doing this with the guys, like you're doing with Star Trek and Babylon 5. They made the crew more interesting, adding characters that made the series a lot of fun. The movie was basically all soldiers, Daniel, and Colonel O'Neil (One L in the movie), but the TV show added characters that complemented O'Neill so there was input into his decisions, and some conflict. O'Neill's command position was essentially challenged with information from these new characters. Not going to tell you about them so you can discover them on your own, if you decide to do the series. Daniel was retained, albeit with a different actor. The actor they chose was a good pick.
General West was a drone, and they replaced him with a more personable, but still in charge, General Hammond. Big improvement. I'll let you discover the other characters on your own, but I will tell you that they brought on Richard Dean Anderson as Colonel O'Neill. One proviso that he requested for him to be in the series was that he would have some control over the mien of Colonel O'Neill. So the TV show O'Neill was, in my opinion, a big improvement because Dean Anderson embued the character with a smart-ass sense of humor. This did not turn the show into a comedy, but it made it enjoyable to watch because he was always slamming the bad guys, verbally. It made the show watchable, which is why it was on for ten years.
For years, I was a huge Star Trek fan, but Stargate SG-1 became my favorite sci-fi show when it ran.

I'm talking about the first series, Stargate: SG-1. I never got into the spin-off Stargate: Atlantis.
The show is about exploring many other worlds the Stargate goes to. They had fo retcon things though from the movie to make the series work. Not spoiling anything to say the world they go to in this movie they change from being on the far side of the universe in a different galaxy to being one of the closest worlds to us the Stargate goes to. They needed to do that for the sake of the series. That and they changed the design of the alien that took over the human body (Ra).
Some other tweaks here and there but otherwise I LOVE the continuity the series had with the movie! They change some things but the show doesn't forget anything that happened in the movie. There are many call backs to it, especially in the early seasons.
The show has a great plot line that moves steadily forward but there are filler episodes too.
But this show explores just about ALL the great science fiction tropes!
    It is so much fun!
    Best Regards!

Yeah they injected humour and sarcasm from Jack I didn’t like much. I prefer the movie, where the aliens are more alien.

Not to give spoilers. The series stargate SG1 is better by far. Richard Dean Anderson takes over as Jack O'neill. I will say one teaser/spolier that Ra was a member of an entire race. I would say maybe after you finish B5 or Star trek doing SG1.

      @ScarlettM Год назад +1

@@celiashen5490 It looks like meat was taken out, cut into pieces, cooked and then put back into the lizard for effect. As far as cooking, maybe they wrapped meat in edible leaves and spices, covered it with mud and put into a fire to bake. That would make the meat really juicy and flavorful without burning it.

Pretty good Movie but when they made the TV show, I think I watched a couple rpisodes but lost interest quicjly and passed on it. it seems you can make a movie from a TV show but making a TV show from a movie just doesn't work for me.

The movie was more sci-fi what-if and horror. The tv show had too much sarcasm from Jack in book. It was more action adventure than sci fi which I didn’t like.
