Easy to see why this film stands the test of time! Not only are the jump scares signature now of this genre but the mystery of each character is heighten by a powerful cinematography and direction.
The tension builds masterfully as we join the characters waking up to what they hope will be their way home.
The space mission was doomed from the moment Ash was brought on as scientist. Bravo Ian Holm! Thank you for your artistry!
The whole cast while simple on the surface certainly do evolve into pieces of a greater collision between mankind and the unknown.
Hope you enjoy as we finally take this mission to outer space where we survive with the one and only Ripley! Sigourney Weaver sets a new precedence as female hero.
Here we witness the beginning of a classic sci-fi franchise and the rise of an actor who has left her impact in the history of movies.
Tell us how this movie hits you. Do you like ALIENS more, the sequel? Did you know that Ash was the antagonist that ushers in the killing Alien?

Alien got made because of Star Wars. With Star Wars being a huge hit, 20th Century Fox soon realised that Sci-Fi was in high demand, and the only script they had at that time, was Alien. So they green lit it on the strength of Star Wars.

I saw this opening weekend. The only ad on t.v. showed an egg, and the tag line, "In space, no one can hear you scream." There were very few scenes, and NO spoilers. A friend of mine had an asthma attack on opening night, and that's all I knew. Still one of my favorite movies.

Oh, and for the closing question: you would hate to be in a movie like this! 🙂 Ridley Scott and the directing team had the Nostromo built as an entire set, to the actors could get to really feel the claustrophobia of the situation. And while they did give genereal directions and clues as to what was going to happen, they left out the details - such as the bloody gore of the chestburster scene, where none of the actors were prepared for the spraying mess.

    • @rodentnolastname6612

"Biomechanical Anatomy" is the term you were looking for, it has what looks like mechanically designed parts and that helps it blend into the ship. Though that's not why it has them specifically, the creture was designed by a famous weird artist called H.R. Giger, who focused on jarring imagery

I first saw this on Feb. 7, 1981. It premiered on Showtime after being a massive hit in theaters. I was 10 years old, and we were living at Loring AFB, Maine. Three friends spent the night to watch it, and my folks watched with us.
We were all absolutely terrified, but loved the movie. We watched SNL to chill out, and started nodding off. It ran again in the very early morning, and someone asked, "Do we want to watch it again in the dark?" Everyone else said, "NOPE."

Last thing: You absolutely must see _Aliens_ and you must watch the Special Edition. It is absolutely incredible; an action film with horror elements. Written and directed by James Cameron, his first film after the original Terminator. _Aliens_ was such a hit it made the cover of Time Magazine in 1986.

    Something to keep in mind.
They attempted to use Flamethrowers on the Alien to kill or deter it. But in the finale, Ripley blasts it with the shuttle's thrusters. And it's pushed back by the blast force, not incinerated by the heat.

Correction: “Star Wars” did NOT create movies about spaceships and travel in outer space. The real blueprint for the more modern space film is “2001: A Space Odyssey” which came out in 1968, a full 9 years before “Star Wars”.

That shot of the alien putting its tail behind Lambert’s legs. Is actually from the extended version of Bret’s death. His death was more violent, with the alien’s tail slashing the back of his legs.
Also, in the Director’s Cut, when first fleeing to the shuttle. Ripley enters the alien’s nest, and discovers Bret and Dallas there. Dallas, who is alive but cocooned to the wall. Pitifully begs Ripley to kill him. Which she does.

If y’all like playing video games I highly recommend Alien Isolation. That game really makes you nervous, as you have to get around trying to avoid the Aliens. Definitely a good survival horror game. As for the movies the 2nd one (Aliens) is my favorite. Sigourney Weaver was in the first 4. After Alien 3 (1992) she did Alien Resurrection (1997). Then after that there was Aliens vs Predator movies, Then Prometheus and Alien Covenant which were like prequels. Now I’m hearing they are doing an Alien series.

  • @willcool713

No spoilers, but there are fun Alien and Predator franchise crossovers (which are nothing like the level of either franchise, but great creature features anyway). You should see the Aliens that hatch from the chests of different creatures! The imagination in this franchise's artwork is pretty amazing.
Among sequels, Aliens is considered among the best, rivaling the original, though more action horror than thriller as directed by James Cameron.
This movie started a whole sci-fi meme in movies and fiction nicknamed "space truckers," referring to blue collar, work-a-day, industrial labor-type folks, in space and sci-fi settings. Previously space had been largely written as the provence of the elite or select. Bringing working class concerns to futurism added a whole new sense of realism for wider audiences.

The reason the alien was just curled up in the shuttle is because it was dying. Creatures that mature quickly don't live very long (like dragonflies), and this thing went from chest-burster to full grown in a matter of (probably) days - given that they had to have time to prep Kane for "burial" and work up the trackers and prods. So it was at its end of life, which is why it didn't go after Ripley until provoked.

  • @davidlionheart2438

None of the crew are scientists apart from Ash. They're basically space truckers. Also, Ash didn't say he'd volunteer for the first group out. That was Kane who became host for the alien. As for the cat, it is not connected to the alien and the alien has no interest in it because it's too small to be a host. For future reactions you might take into consideration that they'll be much more effective if your audience can actually hear the movie you're reacting to.

My idea for an alien tv-series is as follows: It takes places just before the events in the first alien movie and happens on a planet near where the nostromo spaceship
is shipping ore.Weyland-Yutani is on the planet and have terraformed it for years, when they discovers a cave with lots of xenomorph eggs.
One of them get's infected and a xenomorph is born. It turns out to be a queen, and a lot of the Weyland-Yutani humans are infected and then
a war breaks out.All the humans on the planet are wiped out and only a few manage to escape in a spaceship. Then they nuke the planet from orbit.
Then Weyland-Yutani regrets the decision and a hunt for the xenomorph begins. They get a tip that there's a crashed spaceship on lv426 and sends
the robot Ash on the Nostromo spaceship. But they are informed that the mission has failed and that Nostromo has gone missing. Then Weyland-Yutani get's
a tip about an xenomorph on Fiorina161 and sends a team of researchers there. They finds a surviving prisoner that is impreagnated and a queen is born.
Weyland-Yutani then wants to use the xenomorphs on the planets where the engineers are located because they want the technology to seed planets with life.
They also want the elixir that provides humans with prolongued life. After they have managed to give birth to a flock of xenomorphs, they drops them
on an engineer planet and causes everyone of them to die. Then they get hold of the blue elixir that gives
prolongued life. But several ships with engineers that where away from their planet when Weyland-Yutani wiped the
population out, pursue them and manages to get the elixir back, but gets trapped on the planet where both parties
crash. Then a battle takes place and the crew from Weyland-Yutani gets the elixir that gives them prolongued life
for thousands of years, but they are now trapped on the planet, with no means to get anywhere. But then
they see a light aproaching, but is the spaceship friends or foes ?

So interesting hearing this being described as a classic in a distant sense. I think of classics being from the 30's, 40's, 50's and possibly the 60's. This movie is a classic but I've always just described it as a great film.
And there were plenty of space and space-related films and tv series before this. Flash Gordon, the 50's space films, Planet of the Apes, 2001, Lost in Space, Star Trek, Rocky Horror, etc. Was shocked that Aliens 3 was the first experience with the genre; glad you watched the first and hope you watch the second. I'm not a fan of the series after the second film.
And there is nothing like non-computerized special effects in horror and sci-fi films; the miniatures, model work, prosthetics, add tactile and visual effect. Oh, Michael Jackson's Thriller video was hailed for it's effects when it came out.

You know, if someone went in and digitally updated the displays, there's precious little in this movie telling you that it's nearly 50 years old. This was the first and is still one lf the few spaceship movies where the ship looks lived in and indusrial, the opposite of Star Trek and Star Wars That realism adds to the terror.
I think it's inescapable that when the crew returned from the planet they brought at least two adult monsters with them. First, nothing can grow as fast as the monster in the first attack. And as for the one in the escspe shuttle, it must have been in there already while she was running away from another one toward the shuttle.
For me, the big unexplained aspect of the movie is how their ship had gravity. It wasn't a spinning wheel as in 2001, using centrifugal force in place of gravity, so why weren't they floating around in a gravity-free environment.
As usual in horror movies, the best survival strategy is twofold: 1) listen to the girl ("I don't like it here, let's go" "Don't open that" etc) and 2) follow the cat. Cat's run from danger,. a dog may actually go toward it to protect its human.

What will they make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, no-DFX movie 'without Jennifer Lawrence"?;) 6:52 The "Nostromo" crew are "sailors on a freighter." 7:10 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 8:32 Canny viewers saw Ash's "calisthenics" as suspect. 9:52 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 11:10 The first major jump scare? 12:12 The Face Hugger, grossing out audiences for decades. 13:47 "Why can't they just cut it off?" answered by Acid Blood. 16:30 A Props dept. work of ART, made of sea animals. DFX can't match this level of reality. 18:28 Kane's last meal. 19:10 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences since 1979. 20:11 Burial at sea, an old maritime custom to spare next-of-kin the gruesome details. 21:54 Along came Jones. 23:28 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 26:08 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 26:48 Most didn't see this coming. 29:55 I've read that Lambert is standing in for us, the audience. 32:23 Escape route cut off, stop Destruct to gain time for Plan B. 39:12 Tonight's entree on the Shuttle "Narcissus" is Xenomorph Steamed in Shell. 39:49 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph. With this and the next movie, newcomer Sigourney Weaver, became a major movie star. Along with Linda Hamilton of "The Terminator," they became BadAss Action icons. "Jennifer Lawrence"? Who is that? "Would you like to be in a movie like this?" Take a look at "Galaxy Quest" (1999), where actors face the Reality of Space.

This is going to sound completely unrelated, but I promise you it isn't, and as a movie lover and a reaction watching lover, you would both love watching Spaceballs, and I would love watching you watch Spaceballs. It's a Mel Brooks parody of Star Wars. But I promise you, you are now ready for that movie in ways you never knew you needed to be. It's one of the funniest things you'll ever watch.
I know, that doesn't seem like the thing to recommend after watching Alien. But I promise you, as a major major nerd, and a Gen Xer, you really really need to watch Spaceballs.

Would have liked just a little more sound and scenes from the movie for context but I get people worry about copyright.

Guys with all due respect calling Dallas, Lambert and Kane stupid for continuing to explore is a tad mean. If every human had that attitude we'd all still be living in caves. Also from a practical viewpoint if the landing party had got spooked and exited the alien ship and they'd all got back safely then the movie would have been less than an hour long...not ideal 🤔😉😊

The sequel Aliens breaks the normal rule that sequels are inferior. While this is suspense over action, Aliens manages to perfectly balance suspense with terrific action sequences and it goes up a notch or two. It also contains one of the greatest lines in movie sci-fi😉. When I saw in in the cinema in '86, the audience cheered. However, the subsequent entries into what are called 'franchises' these days are poor and like Jaws, the law of diminishing returns sets in so probably only do them if you're bored.

So glad the family was able to watch this cinematic masterpiece. Please check out Aliens. It's on par or better (depending on who you ask) with the original. I am so happy that the family is going down a classic movie journey. As a movie aficionado, I am looking forward to more reactions from you. Aliens is a must, the other sequels not so much. PLEASE watch Aliens, great action, and classic lines. Jose made a good point about the movie being a commentary on human ambition. It makes you question who is the REAL alien? Also, think about watching this movie on a huge movie screen in the dark. How much scarier it would be? As always, love your reactions.

52:20 What happened is that the studio saw the insane profits from Aliens, and wanted more. They were building sets for "3" without a finished script. The original script was garbage, and went through a series of rewrites and different writers, but none of them could save it.
Fincher was not allowed to make the movie he wanted to make, and was forced to work with a script he didn't like or want. The studio told him "Look, you could have somebody piss against the wall for two hours and call it Alien 3 and it would still do $30 million worth of business." And it shows.
They break continuity and kill all the characters that people cared about. And you're supposed to care about murderers and rapists in a prison colony. It was a huge middle finger to Aliens, James Cameron, and the fans. Some freaks still worship that movie, because there are freaks for everything.

Wow, ya'll think this was an exhausting movie,..hmmpf, wait for Aliens,..and yes it's scary, fascinating, thrilling, mysterious,..all rolled into one,..has your mind going a mile a minute, your hoping, cheering for the characters that are in danger,..your invested in them,..their survival, I too was so mad when Parker was killed off,...so wanted him to make it,..Ridley Scott, very big on details, set was built, full size, the corridors, hallways,..and the cat, well , the cat wasn't on the menu as much as humans, and yess alien seemed to also enjoy the killing, the way it stalks Lambert before killing her,..when Parker rushes it, and it turns on a dime, to kill him,..and after killing him,..turning to Lambert, and like going in slow motion, as it moves towards her, and shes crying, terrified of course,..and you don't see it kill her, but just the sounds, of her being killed,.you so should watch the trailer, original first trailer they released the year it came out, absolutely terrified me,..but there's no visual, just audio, and at the end of the trailer, as I found out after watching the movie, years after the films release, that the horrible screaming, raspy labored breathing, is Lambert being killed,..and maybe that's what made the trailer so horrifying on it's own, but watching the movie and still not seeing but hearing what's happening to Lambert, only adds to the suspense and horror,...keep going, loved your reaction,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

I find it quite curious that most reactors under a certain age seem to use Star Wars as a reference point in many sci-fi films. Take a look at Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey and the excellent practical spaceship and planet work done there, long before Star Wars. Also, the editing style of the video is far too choppy, skipping along quickly. Unless you know the film, it's not really that obvious what is happening. Take a look at some of the other reactors to see how it's done.
