A couple of fun factoids; when Alien was first screened to audiences, ushers fainted, people vomited, and some ran screaming from the theater. Now Ridley Scott decided to write the script with minimal details on that specific scene. Literally none of the actors in that movie scene (besides John Hurt), knew what was really going to happen. The script merely said "This thing emerges." The fake chest, used for John Hurt's character, is filled to the brim with fake blood, and real butcher's organs, and the animatronic chestburster. The first take of that scene was a false start of the fake chest. None of the actors know what's going to happen, just a small spurt of blood comes out. The crew preps for a second take, and the actors lean in a bit closer, ready to act surprised. On the second take, with all the actors in the zone, Ridley Scott lets hell break loose, and the alien bursts out of the fake chest with a HUGE spurt of fake blood, that shoots perfectly into Veronica Cartright's face. The reactions that you see in the film during that scene by all of the actors are completely real. The cut of Cartwright screaming, of Kotto and Sigourney's look of pure horror, and Ian Holm's utter surprise are all real reactions to what was taking place. Cartwright literally passed out after it happened. Yaphet Kotto went into another room and refused to speak to anybody. Sigourney Weaver said she forgot she was making a movie.
6:39, the biggest stars in this were probably the British guys John Hurt and Ian Holm. This is Sigourney Weaver's first major breakout role. Ripley was originally written as a man. The producers and Ridley Scott decided to subvert expectations by making the last man standing a woman. Since this is a science fiction that pivots into horror - Ripley is the final girl but in space.
That's right. The black actor Yaphet Kotto was also well known. He was in a lot of TV shows and went on to star in movies like "The Running Man" with Schwarzenegger. He caused quite a commotion in the UK for a number of years because he revealed that he was of nobility and was related to Queen Elizabeth II, in his autobiography. He would talk about it frequently in TV and radio interviews and he was ridiculed for years. It turns out that he was indeed nobility after all. He was telling the truth. Not sure it was ever proven beyond doubt before his passing that he was related to the Queen, although she did have black heritage in her bloodline, through Queen Charlotte. 🇬🇧
Yaphet Kotto had already been in Live and Let Die when Alien was made. One cast member said in an interview I read that they thought the script was terrible and weren't going to do the movie, but gave it another chance when they heard Kotto was on the project. (I think it was Veronica Cartwright, but I don't remember for sure- Sigourney Weaver certainly wasn't in a position to be turning down parts at that time)

John Hurt ( the guy who died on the table from the chest-butster) is an extraordinary actor! One of his finest performances was as "John ( really Joseph) Carey Merrick" in the movie, loosely based on the true story of "The Elephant Man." He was incredible in that film. I saw it as a child and it stayed with me all my life. Alien Isolation is actually ten years old this year and still holds up very well. It is a great survival horror game with fun dlc content as well. I remember it being the only horror game I played a couple hundred hours of. I couldn't get enough of the cat and mouse game between me and the xenomorph. The first 4 Alien movies are more directly connected storywise, so watching Alien Vs Predator, and Alien Covenant first didn't spoil anything. I recommend reacting to the Director's cut for Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection. Same with Terminator, the first 2 movies are more directly connected than the others, so nothing was really spoiled.
Saw it in 1979 in a vintage, single screen movie theater packed to the rafters, including the balcony. Suspenseful as hell with pervasive, escalating dread throughout, like no other film before it, WITH the exception of The Exorcist, which had come out earlier in the '70s. As scary as Alien was, for me it was not as nightmarish as The Exorcist because, after all, one could rationalize that the former was set light years away in some hypothetical future, whereas one could imagine a demon being in your own attic in the here and now. Do watch the oft-derided Prometheus. It's far from perfect, but provides some pre-Alien backstory, has some great visuals, and a spectacular finale.
I saw this at the theater when it first came out in 1979 (I was 22). Even the trailer that played on TV was scary to me. I was scared walking into the theater. My poor boyfriend - I about ripped his arm off! This is my favorite of the movies. Some people don't like the slow burn but what was terrifying about it was you hardly saw the alien and never knew what was coming next. The silent parts were terrifying.
I suggest checking out Aliens, the 2nd film. I loved the 3rd one personally, but the 2nd film is what skyrocketed Sigourney (pronounces Sig-ur-nee) Weaver into famousness. Well, this and Ghostbusters. But I would love to see your reaction to Aliens, as it's a damned good film & you really see Ripley's (Sigourney's character's full name is Ellen Ripley) character development into a friggin' BADASS. It's this film that set the trope of the badass, individually strong woman who can take control & run this b*tch. There's a scene toward the end that you will cheer at -- most have! Just remember the line "Get away from her" and you'll know where you are. Good video!
@28:31 Lambert( Veronica Cartwright ) was in the remake of "Invasion of The Body Snatchers" and as a child in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" She was the original scream queen.
8:28 INSIDE. I watched this movie for the first time 2 years ago? I love the writing, the atmosphere. I love puppets and animatronics, I love that the Xeno suit is a guy inside a heavy suit with some machinery. So cool
2:11 Hahahaha! 5:43 saw it at the drive-in theatre with my family when I was seven years old! My mother tried to cover my eyes in "certain" parts, but I could still see through her fingers! Thought it was great!!!
Alien and Aliens are by far, my favorite Sci-Fi movies ever! Predator would be third and then Terminator 1 and 2. All are the gold standard for Sci-Fi.
My favorite Aliens game even to this day is still Aliens vs Predator: Extinction. There are three campaigns where you either control a Colonial Marine unit, a Predator hunting party, or a Xenomorph hive. Personally I loved playing the Xenomorphs.
You definitely watched your franchises backward. not just the timeline but the quality. Alien 1 & 2 are the best Alien movies as are Termi9nator 1 & 2 the best Terminator movies. I know younger people are used to CGI and top special effects and so assume the newer movies will be better but these old movies hold up pretty well for their age and they just much better quality movies overall, Better plot, dialogue, direction, sets etc. Even older black & white movies have their charm if you open your mind and enjoy the stories, you may even forget they are in B&W after a while.
ALIEN(1979) is probably my very, very favorite movie in my list of favorites films. A horror movie via hardcore science fiction. I've watched/re-watched it 200+ times. Ironically, i was too young to have watched it in the theater when it came out. I've collected every film and art book about the movie. It had and has a profound, lasting impact on my creative psyche. Thee BEST. Unsolicited advice: If/when you get around to watching Alien3(1992), PLEASE watch the Assembly Cut, NOT the theatrical cut. Trust me on this one.
Same, I really dislike pple telling reactors not to watch A3 - let them make their own minds up, because luckily for us, not everyone thinks the same on all matters. Also, I think A3 is the final part of Ripley's original story arc, like it or not.
I'd also recommend to watch Aliens 3 and 4. They get a lot of flack (and some of it is deserved) but they are still really solid movies with some amazing actors/characters. (and yes to Terminators too, haven't seen THOSE?! Also recommend watching at least part 3 (same as above but think most of the flack is undeserved), 4 and 5 are very meh, 6 is really good again. But as a series still worth seeing all of them, reaction video's don't only need to be award winning movies on all fronts.
41:53, in the original script the film had a very different and horrific ending. In the first draft, the Alien dodged Ripley's harpoon attack and got back onto the shuttle. It then ends Ripley in a very gruesome manner. The final shot of the movie would have been the Alien sitting down to make that distress message Ripley sent...but in the voice of Captain Dallas. Some higher up at 20th Century Fox (which had just made a mint on Star Wars 2 years earlier) decided that Alien could be the start of another blockbuster franchise. So they had Ridley Scott and the writers change the script so that Ripley lives. The rest of monster movie history!
A "watch it out of order" movie reactor thinks he will sleep soundly tonight.;) Get on board the "Nostromo," and stay out of dark, confined spaces! 2:12 That happens in the next edition. 4:36 The Company is sending the equivalent of a freighter crew to "do science" on an unexplored planet! 5:45 Back then TV and print ads for "Alien" gave no indication as to what kind of film it was, except for: "In space, no one can hear you scream." The audience in the ex-Cinerama theater were on edge, as tension built way above the breaking point. 8:04 We never find out what kind of weapons the survey crew had. 8:08 Saavy viewers saw Ash's "calisthenics" as suspect. 9:44 The Space Jockey, a mystery for decades. 10:44 The theatrical version of "Alien3" is the Studio Interference Cut; the Assembly Cut makes more sense. 11:11 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 12:00 Oh, you sweet Summer child.;) 12:30 This conversation has become iconic due to recent events. 13:25 You are watching the Special Edition version, with footage not seen in 1979. 14:34 Acid Blood is why you don't "just cut it off him." 17:45 A Props dept. work of ART, made of sea animals. Modern CGI can't match this level of reality. 20:07 Kane's last meal. 20:59 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences for over 40 years. 21:34 Burial at sea, an old maritime tradition that spares the next of kin. 22:53 Along came Jones. 24:14 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 27:33 You're in command now, Ripley. 30:06 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Seeing the Devil in bright sunlight at noon is one thing, finding out that an apparently ordinary crew mate is a nearly unstoppable killer robot is quite another. 32:20 Will your sleep be untroubled tonight? 35:37 That's a Stinger. 36:46 I didn't see Brett and Dallas cocooned in 1979. 37:38 Escape route cut off, stop Destruct to gain time for Plan B. 38:44 Tell you what, sign up with Alterra as the Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief on the capital ship "Aurora" to build a Phase Gate near the unexplored tropical ocean planet, 4546B. As "Ryley Robinson." you may get shore leave to observe the unique flora and fauns of the planet. What could go wrong in "Subnautica"? 41:09 Tonight's Entree on the shuttle "Narcissus" is Steamed Xenomorph in Shell. 41:47 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph. For a change of pace, "Galaxy Quest" (1999) will show you a very different Sigourney Weaver.;)
The video game Alien Isolation is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s the best Alien game ever made and one of the best survival horror games ever made. The alien AI uses two AI that talk to each other and adjust the alien’s behavior based on your gameplay. So if you evade the alien by using noisemakers as a distraction, it’ll eventually stop falling for the distractions. It’s also the game that made me stop trusting IGN reviews because they only gave it like a 5 or 6 out of 10 because there “weren’t enough save points” which is absolutely not true.
Alien and then Aliens are a must watch and then play the game Alien: Isolation (one of the best games ever). Alien 3 is a decent movie but there was a lot of studio interference so if you do watch it, I would suggest watching the Director's Cut, it's a much more thorough movie. Also, The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day are also a must watch, immensely fantastic movies. As a side note, I was born in Jan of 78, I saw this and The Terminator when I was 6 and Aliens when it released and I started watching horror movies with my mom when I was 4, starting with The Fog, Friday the 13th and Halloween followed up shortly by The Exorcist 🤷🏼♂️
21:52 that depends on the host, The Xenomorph evolves based on the host biology, it could adapt to any life form and grab some characteristics of the said host. Could be minutes or seconds
I was 6 or 7 when I first watched this and I couldn't even read the subtitles yet, my parents had to tell me what the characters are saying, but I loved the movie so much, it sparked my imagination (and i don t just mean the horror stuff, I mean the design of the ship and the atmosphere and the idea of space and spaceships). And somehow I knew there is no possible way there was a monster under my bed, but I still had a weird feeling like I'm being watched after seeing it :)) I remember I was creeped out, but my parents and I would make fun of it.
I am so happy you watched the Director's Cut! Well done! The ending was very final because this was before every damn movie had to have a sequel! James Cameron made the sequel and you need to see Aliens (Special Edition), the best version. It is more action/adventure with some horror.
The biggest star in the movie was Tom Skeritt. He was chosen for the role to throw the audience off because the audience expected him to be the main character and survive.
5:35, fun fact this movie came out in 1979 and its sequel Aliens in 1986. As part of the sequel it was mentioned on an onscreen image that Lambert here (played by Veronica Cartwright) is a trans woman. It's an Easter Egg that the producers of Aliens put into this characters background story.
I think it's the special addition that shows what the Alien did to the whole crew. Other than Parker and Lambert, but the camp and Brent were being used for Egg Morphing.
Alien Isolation is excellent It's the sequel to the first movie and a prequel to the second movie (watch the Director's Cut of the second movie, that's what it connects to) Also, at 38:50: I didn't just play it in first person I played it in VR through a mod ;)
37:00 This was a deleted scene, only pushed by the studio in the so-called "director's cut" for the 40th anniversary. Ridley Scott considers the original the director's cut. It's not canon. It doesn't appear anywhere else in any other Alien movie.
Saw this opening night. OMG!! Somehow I just knew Jonesy would be a hero... and a villain. (The last scene with the cat being saved was supposed to raise some eyebrows).
I was 7/8 when this was first released and my parents took me to see it in the theater and like halfway through they both fell asleep on it. So they were tripping on me when we got home cuz I was to scared to enter a room without the lights being on.I was running from room to room and turned on all the lights in the house. I would not go into a dark room for about a week. Aliens is a must watch in this series the 3rd isn't worth your time imo. Terminator 1&2 are must sees.
I would have done the same thing as Ripley. Sorry Cain but you’re not coming back on the ship until the thing is off entirely. Then we are doing a fully body scan to see what it was doing. They just saw the tube down the dudes throat and didn’t further investigate to see where it was going.
My first movie was in fact Alien. Terrified the shite out of me, but what really freaked me out was playing AvP (2000). Watching a xeno on TV was pretty bad but having to play a character, walking willingly to face a bunch of them? God damn...
17:37, The design work for the baby Alien, adult alien and the face hugger come from the late Swiss artist H.R. Giger. If you have ever seen his artwork it's seriously disturbing to look at. He melds dark sexual imagery with oddly biomechanics ones.
There's two groups of fans, some hate 3 with a passion, some really dig it. Ultimately those that hate it are doing so purely on choices from the 2nd. Personally, I think it's great @ maje sure you watch thr assemble cut
The third one is pretty decent, but it certainly wasn't as good as the first two, and many people didn't like it's take on some of the previous characters. (Also, Alien Isolation is old, but it's still atmospherically the scariest game ever. It's brutal because the AI is really smart in that game, and even adjusts it's actions as you progress).
Alien Isolation is a great game but yes it is terrifying 😂, definitely need to react to Aliens, terminator 1 and terminator 2, predator 1 and 2. These are the goto scifi movies
Here's the thing about the third one... .... it's not a bad stand-alone movie... ....but it is a a bad *Aliens* movie... The movie itself is pretty cool, but after the first two, there's a story point that's so infuriating to fans of the first movies, that it makes it hard to appreciate the rest of the third movie on its own merits. So then the 4th movie is a total over-the-top cartoon, but after the third one, you can just relax and appreciate it for just how gonzo it is. "Prometheus" is a prequel and an origin-story of sorts, it's a mixed bag, but it has some cool ideas and answers a lot of questions. "Covenant" is the follow-up to Prometheus and it's OK. The Predator movies all take place in the present day or the past, centuries before the events in any of the Aliens movies - including the Alien vs Predator movies, which shows us aliens on Earth in the modern day, and may represent it's own independent timeline.
24:01, Jones the cat is probably thinking "Brett really needs to be quiet and hide"
Jones the cat is the OG Alien survivor. He gets to live out a happy life as a station cat on Gateway. 😊

Sigourney Weaver is Ripleys' real name. Sig-gorn-nee is what it sounds like.
Kane would’ve got left outside 🤷🏾
There are 4 / 5 major actors in all the Alien movies 😬👍🏻
Ian Holm / Ash - ( Lord Of The Rings / 5th Element ) - is a huge actor 😬👍🏻
Actually the black guy died last. Or at least the second one did. They shoved a 6"10" Nigerian in the alien suit.
Now you have to see Aliens (Special Edition)
So cool
Alien 3 assembly cut rules.
When this movie came out, I was 5. I watched it on TV a few years later and the chest-bursting scene was forever in my head.
T2 theatrical cut rules.
My favorite Aliens game even to this day is still Aliens vs Predator: Extinction. There are three campaigns where you either control a Colonial Marine unit, a Predator hunting party, or a Xenomorph hive. Personally I loved playing the Xenomorphs.
Terminator is really good. But Terminator 2 is the best of the series. Same with Alien....Aliens the second movie is incredible.
See Aliens !!!!!!!
Alien isolation have the same vibe
ALIEN(1979) is probably my very, very favorite movie in my list of favorites films.
A horror movie via hardcore science fiction.
I've watched/re-watched it 200+ times. Ironically,
i was too young to have watched it in the theater when it came out.
I've collected every film and art book about the movie. It had and has a profound, lasting impact on my creative psyche. Thee BEST.
Unsolicited advice:
If/when you get around to watching Alien3(1992), PLEASE watch the Assembly Cut, NOT the theatrical cut.
Trust me on this one.
Alien 3 gets alot of hate, but I think it's an ok movie
Same, I really dislike pple telling reactors not to watch A3 - let them make their own minds up, because luckily for us, not everyone thinks the same on all matters. Also, I think A3 is the final part of Ripley's original story arc, like it or not.
@@MotherofImps Precisely.
Tough movie! Ready for the second! 🔥
Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 31:16 Most didn't see this coming. 31:46 I beg to differ.
16:19. Leave him on the planet and save the rest of the ship and crew. He was dead the moment that facehugger latched on to him.
One of my favorite series! The game, Alien Isolation, was a masterpiece! & yes, I had constant anxiety throughout. 😆
Aliens 👽 even better
I personally LOVE The Yautja (Predators) but both species have incredible history and culture developed and expanded from these films
A couple minutes in, I recognize you as one of us. Let's laugh at the world, brother.
At least check out all 4 of the original movies. Make sure you watch the Special Edition of Aliens and the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 though...
I think it's the special addition that shows what the Alien did to the whole crew. Other than Parker and Lambert, but the camp and Brent were being used for Egg Morphing.
Alien Isolation is excellent
It's the sequel to the first movie and a prequel to the second movie (watch the Director's Cut of the second movie, that's what it connects to)
Also, at 38:50: I didn't just play it in first person
I played it in VR through a mod ;)
37:00 This was a deleted scene, only pushed by the studio in the so-called "director's cut" for the 40th anniversary. Ridley Scott considers the original the director's cut. It's not canon. It doesn't appear anywhere else in any other Alien movie.
Alien was very good. Aliens was one of the best sequels ever produced. #3 was plain & average
Saw this opening night. OMG!! Somehow I just knew Jonesy would be a hero... and a villain. (The last scene with the cat being saved was supposed to raise some eyebrows).
Fun fact: the cast didn’t know about the breakfast scene before it happened, because Ridley Scott wanted the horror of the actors to be real.
That’s tough 🔥
I was 8 years old 1983 when I watched it! Nightmares for weeks or years...Stil love it! Loved your reaction. Keep them coming Love from Sweden.
I loved the 3rd one, Fincher's first film, watch the assembly cut its great
I would have done the same thing as Ripley. Sorry Cain but you’re not coming back on the ship until the thing is off entirely. Then we are doing a fully body scan to see what it was doing. They just saw the tube down the dudes throat and didn’t further investigate to see where it was going.
If you ever have Xenomorph acid on your ship, please apply backing soda power to stop any potential pressure breach.
Prometheus is awesome!!! The production value alone is worth the price of admission. You should check it out.
The black guy always dies first trope (from a black comedian) is a myth right up there with there were no strong women in older movies.
Biggest star at the time was probably Yaphet Kotto who had been a Bond villain 5 years before.
Sigourney Weaver was practically unknown.
Fun fact: The Xenomorph only has about 4 minutes of screen time because they couldn't figure out how to keep it from looking like a man in a suit.
Sigourney Weaver um ícone de Hollywood...... maravilhosa heroina
Fun fact the Metroid games, with samus. Are influenced by this movie. The tight spaces, the way the doors open and close. The boss being called Ridley
Add on also the count down in the Metroid games
There's two groups of fans, some hate 3 with a passion, some really dig it.
Ultimately those that hate it are doing so purely on choices from the 2nd.
Personally, I think it's great @ maje sure you watch thr assemble cut
The third one is pretty decent, but it certainly wasn't as good as the first two, and many people didn't like it's take on some of the previous characters. (Also, Alien Isolation is old, but it's still atmospherically the scariest game ever. It's brutal because the AI is really smart in that game, and even adjusts it's actions as you progress).
I played the Alien: Isolation game before but I’m not very far in because, like you mentioned, it’s scary AF! 😱 👽
Alien Isolation is a great game but yes it is terrifying 😂, definitely need to react to Aliens, terminator 1 and terminator 2, predator 1 and 2. These are the goto scifi movies
No way! You watched a movie! That is crazy! Wow! Incredible! Was it on a tv!? Never seen anyone watch a movie before!
Idk if it was on tv or not.. I’ll do my research after I figure out if the earth is flat or round !
29:16, what will more aliens do...definitely watch the sequel.
I highly recommend watching the Assembly Cut of ALIEN³
Answer to your question: Predator because they are awesome and the sound they make is amazing.
Guess I'm a psycho then, because I played Alien Isolation in VR. And LIKED IT.
There are acturally 4 original films: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien resurrection
The chest bursting scene the actors didn't know what was going to happen so the fear was real
I would recommend Aliens; The |Special Edition. And Terminator 1 and 2.
