It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it made $200 million dollars at the box office against an $11 million dollar budget, it put Sigourney Weaver on the map, it's one of the scariest motion pictures ever made, it spawned 3 sequels, 2 spinoff films, board games, toys, comics, graphic novels, video games, and an upcoming like action TV series, And a third spinoff film titled ALIEN ROMULUS for an August 2024 release.
So excited to discover this franchise with you guys! We’ve learned tons already from the first film alone. The set design is astonishing!
There are also books/audio books- not just the graphic novels.
In fact, there are more sequels to this movie than you wrote(even prequels), although some of them are made by other directors and their quality is unsteady.
There are a total of 8 movies with this alien.
And yet, only the first two movies are highly rated and highly regarded. The rest are crap. They only have fringe fans. Even when Ridley Scott finally goes back and does Prometheus and Covenant, with modern "technology," they are huge disappointments.
The original movie was a perfect storm of talent and blind luck converging in the same place at the same time. Aliens was James Cameron at his best. The rest are a stain on that legacy.
@@miller-joel I disagree David Fincher's Alien was also excellent and after all Prometheus wasn't as bad as some here claim.
In the second film, Ripley has a line “just one of those things managed to wipe out my entire crew in less than 24 hours.” That means from the time it killed Kane to her blowing it out the airlock was probably just under a day time wise.
I’d imagine nobody in the crew were able to sleep once they knew what they had on board.
@@greenman4946 Would you.
Rip Sir Ian Holm, John Hurt, Bill Paxton and Stan Winston
Speaking of time, in the sequel, Ripley is told that she had been adrift for 57 years. Her and the Colonial Marines then go back to LV-426 to investigate. Were they traveling for 57 years as well? It's an interesting thought.
One of the interesting things is that the screen time between Kane dying and Ripley becoming the sole survivor remaining is only 35 minutes. So in a two hour movie that most people think of as a story in which the creature gradually whittling the crew down, one by one, that section of the story actually only takes up around a quarter of the narrative. The first half of the movie in particular is a slow burn, and all the better for it. I *love* the feeling of realism in the opening reel and the growing sense of dread from the time they decode the message onwards. A truly magnificent piece of cinema.
Terminator and Predator are kind of adjacent sci-fi hits and have crossed over with Alien in films, comics, and games. I recommend seeing both of them.
We did watch the first Predator a few months back, but are superpumped to check out the rest too!
@@OfficialMediaKnights I accidentally left Robocop out of that list. I was a fan of the Robocop vs Terminator and some of the Batman vs Predator comics. If you see Huntress in that run, you’ve found my favorite.
My favorite part of this film is the unsung hero: Bolaji Badejo. He's an extremely tall Nigerian refugee (6'10") that they met in a bar in the UK by chance and had him come in to audition for the role of the xenomorph. He was fully ride or die with the film, working with the team for hours as they constantly made adjustments to the xenomorph suit for him. This film was his only acting credit to his name, as he would pass away not too long after the movie was made due to sickle cell anemia.
Just for accuracy's sake, Bolaji passed in 1992; I wouldn't exactly call that time frame "not too long".
Daaamn. That's so cool. Sucks about him dying though 😞 Imagine what he could have accomplished in the film industry if he'd lived longer. He could've been one of the great creature actors, up there with Doug Jones.
@@NoriMori1992 Could have been a Predator

@Geth-Who Ah, a fellow Citizen!

I worked at an indoor paintball centre many years ago here in England where they filmed alien.
The whole upstairs was a Lazer tag area and they'd bought the walls of the alien spaceship set from shepperton studios.
It was really creepy walking about up there when I was checking out the equipment.
Nobody wanted to go there on there own and they thought I was not affected.
They were wrong
I was shitting myself the whole time 😂
I imagine that you were hearing the motion detection sound going off and you were looking all around you.
I know that I would have been doing that! 😅
I can just remember that. It was billed as an Alien Adventure Zone or something, where people were taken through on foot at a run like a jog-along-ghost-train. It got positive reviews in the local paper, but I don't think it lasted more than a season...
@@tedthesailor172yer, it was in an old American base gymnasium/ sports centre which was eventually condemned.
I visited London in 1998 with some friends and we went to this place "Alien Experience" or what they called it. I suspect this place you describe might have been where I was. Or at least the same "walls" and decor from the movie. But the "experience" included a guy dressed up as a Space Marine and putting the group of people into a setting where we were inside the spaceship where an Alien was loose. We ran around following the marine when at one point the Alien popped up and stood in the doorway. He "fired his pulserifle" and commanded us, the group to run. The next thing I remembered was that I found myself alone in pitch darkness. I had lost the group, all fell quiet and I had to feel my way till I heard voices. That in itself was my greatest scare in that experience.
@@mortenBP I went to this when it was open around the same time. It was called 'Alien War'. Pretty amazing being forced to run around the corridors that looked just like the ones in Aliens, only to find an alien crouched in front of you with its arms out to grab, just like in the air vent in Alien. The coolest thing was one of the people in your group was a stooge. You all got bundled into an APC, but just as the doors closed an alien burst in and grabbed the 'stooge', pulling them out. You thought one of your group has actually been grabbed, but it was just an actor.
20:40 People sometimes forget how terrifying the chestburster scene is for someone going into the movie blind lmao
Glad you guys enjoyed this movie and also was terrified of it as well. One of my all time favourite horror movies, love from Australia 🇦🇺
Oh my goodness, this movie GOT us a bunch of times!! It was sooo good!! Cannot wait to watch the rest! Thanks so much for your support, love right back to Australia!
@@OfficialMediaKnights watch aliens now its second part
If you haven't see it yet, I recommend John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982). In many ways, its the soulmate of "Alien"; A small group of people in a remote, isolated location. Tension that builds relentlessly. Excellent practical effects and set design. Eerie, masterfully sound score.
That soundtrack… 😱😱😱
That wasn't an emergency broadcast in the beginning, it was just the ship's computers booting up and waking the crew from hypersleep.
Thanks to Mel Brooks when the alien comes out of the stomach I now expect the alien to pit a top hat on, have a cane and start singing, "Hello my baby - Hello my darling..."
As I understand it, all the Nostromo sets were all connected. They described walking through it was like touring an actual ship.
Yes I read that as well👍🏾
Ridley Scott designed the sets to be stacked on top of each other, so the camera could go along a corridor, up or down a ladder and into another room with the actors.
This was impossible due to fire regulations (fires destroyed the sets of 'The Shining' and 'Legend' during production, for example) and so the ladders going down go into spaces below ground (you can see such a space in Star Wars in the hangar bay).
Today this might be achieved by electronically 'blending' the transition.
19:45 I heard that at this part, the actors were not told exactly what would happen! So their shock was genuine! lmao 🙂 I've seen the movie ten thousand times but it's entertaining to see a new viewer react to the jump scares 🙂
What is unironically funny is that Ellen Ripley is the one with the most logic and common sense in the film. Nobody listens to her so they die.
I have a weird history with this franchise. First Alien movie I ever saw was Alien: Covenant, at the theater with a Meetup group. Some months later, I saw Prometheus on TV. Even without seeing the first Alien, or hearing any opinions about the sequels, I knew these weren't very good; I knew they weren't what an Alien movie looks like when it's being its best, truest self. Then last year, I finally got to see the first Alien, on movie night in a Discord server. And I immediately knew: This was home. This was what an Alien movie was supposed to be. So good. The atmosphere alone is top-notch.
An absolute classic!! The acting, the atmosphere, the music, the sound design, the visual design, the escalating tension, the creature....all simply GREAT! As I once heard this described, this is a haunted house story set in space. And we get introduced to one of the greatest movie heroes, Ellen Ripley. Wonderful reactions as always, you two!!
“In space nothing can hear you scream!” ❤
One of my personal favorite horror franchises! A huge classic! 🙏🏽💪
Absolutely, this movie was FANTASTIC!
I know I already commented on this review, but I can't help adding a few things.
Can you imagine there's a real man inside the Alien suit? His name is Bolaji Badejo, a very tall and thin Nigerian actor.
Nostromo means shipmate, or boatswain in Italian. It comes frome the title of one of Joseph Conrad's novels. The main character is a seaman serving on the ill-fated ship Sulaco. And there's another ship called Sulaco in the Alien franchise, do you remember?
The giant Nostromo ship prop still exists and is kept by the American movie geek who restored it. Or maybe it was donated to a museum, I'm not sure.
When it comes to Alien lore, we can probably say that the Alien is not just a dumb predator. He hid in the rescue shuttle in order to survive, not by accident.
I saw this in the theatre when it premiered and the big screen made it really immersive. A friend of mine saw it and one of the jump scares was so intense that his wristwatch flew off of his hand across the aisle!
Oh man, A dude I work with saw this at the cinema on acid. Had no idea, thourght it would be a star trek like deal. He can never watch it/has never watched it again.
A masterclass in horror and suspense. Lamberts scream at the end was bone chilling.
Saw this when I was 16 on opening weekend with my dad. It scared the shit out of me and for the first and only time in my life I saw my dad was also shaken up. This movie was so realistic and we had never seen anything like it. Today's horror seldom leaves anything to the imagination so most people are desensitized to it before they get around to watching this almost 50 year old movie.
Alien for me will always be the best horror movie ever made.
I agree. In that sense this scifi is for me one of the most realistic scifis ever made. Because it doesnt explains or shows everything. Like real: people never get a full picture of the truth. And a lot is left for speculation. And that just feels realistic. Nowadays most scifi-movie-makers think: that they need to explain and show everything. And the aliens are CGI (which in my opinion always has that plastic-moving-look). I really prefer even a bad model (if its not to bad) over CGI.
I couldn't sleep for a week after seeing the trailer, lol. "In space, no one can hear you scream."
@@PygmalionFaciebat 100% agree, its a masterpiece of both horror and scifi, and the practical special effects cement the realism of everything they put to film. I think it will always remain at the top of my list of scifi movies, and 40 years on it still looks timeless.
This was probably the first film that genuinely frightened me. I saw it at the cinema when I was sixteen and I do not think anything has scared me more since. It certainly helped that I saw it for the first time on the big screen. It was my favourite film until Ridley Scott gave us the outstanding Blade Runner, three years later.
"looks like the inside of a mussel" they did load the face hugger up with seafood, and the opening egg with all the white veiny details was something like sheep and cow intestines. Enjoy!
I went to see this when it was first released. Stood in line for an hour in S.F. and couldn't get in. That was not a thing back then. This movie was huge. Btw, the interior of the ship and the alien were designed by this freaky Swiss artist Giger. Check out his Necronomicon. Very disturbing stuff. You gotta love it.
Holy cow, waiting in line like that back then wasn't too common of an occurrence for sure!
We managed to check out some of Giger's work and we are mindblown! Superinspiring for us for our own projects for sure!
Google Ron Cobb.
Just one of my absolute favourite films. I remember seeing this when it came out expecting something along the lines of Star Wars only to be confronted by this absolute horror of a film. Brilliant effects even now and a wonderful story. Scared the life out of me on first watch!
I was 18 when this came out. It terrified me so much, 45 yrs later I'm scared to watch with you tonight!!😬😩😫😫😫😫
I'm 52. I'm being totally honest. I saw this on VHS when I was a kid, it scared the shit outta me. That moment, took it up to tension level 11, and held it until that fucker got flushed out the airlock.
Little fun fact. For the chestburster scene only the one with the alien in him knew what was going to happen. The reactions of the rest of the cast were genuine as they didn't know what was going to happen.
I remember watching the behind the scenes and the scene where the alien burst out the stomach. That was a real reaction from the cast because none of them knew that was gonna happen like that.
feelings = foreshadowing. This is one of the best examples I've seen in media of that fact - Rook is such a good villain that the twist is amazing
One of the greatest scifi movies ever made
Just want to point out, the spaceship itself and all the human stuff was drawn out and designed by a french comic book artist called Moebius. The Alien, the eggs, the weird creature in the chair, the space ship, all of that was designed by a Swiss Surrealist artist named H.R. Giger, who was famous for essentially painting hyperrealistic nightmares.
In my country it was called: "Alien - the eight passenger of the Nostromo". And it was a first movie that I have learned why do they have an age restriction rating... :) And there is an absolutely awesome game: Alien Isolation. Definetely best franchise production in gaming.
It is called "Alien - the 8. passenger" here (in our native language obviously.
The best thing to come from this film wasn't the sequels or video game; it was a high school play which surprised everyone by how good it turned out. Four years ago in New Jersey, North Bergen High School students & teachers put together a stage drama based off the original movie; using only found materials for the props and costumes and a very limited budget. But it wasn't until fans started circulating video clips from the show that people really took notice. Still; as amazing as it was, they didn't have the funds to do an encore performance until Ridley Scott sent them a check and said do it. The original Lt. Ripley, Sigourney Weaver, even showed up to support and introduce the final show. Sadly the one copy of the entire production; filmed by an audience member, seems to have disappeared from RUclips and the web in general. I'm still on the lookout for that, but here's a highlight reel from Alien Anthology to give you all a taste. ruclips.net/video/dd8WsQTDdOk/видео.html
One thing Ridley Scott wanted to get across via visual story telling was how short a Xeno's lifespan is.
When paied attention to, it's movements get slower and slower as the film goes one. Which is why it didn't just straight up kill Ripley when it was in the shuttle, it was near the end of it's life cycle and was essentially decrepit.
H.R. Giger is the original artist that designed the xenomorph. He's big on bio-mechanical artwork you should check him out
The Nostromo technically can land, but I don't think it's generally supposed to. Mostly it's supposed to stay in space tow refineries back and forth in space.
and remember my young friends, no cgi... it's pure talent from a whole variety of competent people to make it looks... real.
It frightened the life out of me, I was 15 at the time, not allowed to watch it, so I borrowed my parents tv from their bedroom, watching this in the dark on a black and white tv, made it even scarier.
I'm sure a million people have already said this but just in case: Brandywine IS from LOTR, book and movies 😂. It's the name of a river that borders the Shire, the one upon which the Hobbits fled from the pursuing Nazgul in the first movie (NOT the second river by Rivendell where Arwen made the water rush them).
Make sure when you watch ALIENS....you watch the special edition
Sigourney Weaver should have won the Oscar for her performance in it....an absolute masterpiece of a sequel
The shoes that Sigourney is wearing that you refer to are custom make Nike shoes that were made specifically for her character. She wears them in both Alien and Aliens.
One of the most noticeable drivers of the tension throughout is the absolute lack of music score. Something Cameron knew to emulate in the sequel.
So the Alien was originally described as "bio-mechanical". I don't think it was ever specifically addressed in any movie, but the implication is it could eat things made of carbon and process them to grow. That includes a lot of building materials.
Ash using the magazine looks like an attempt to cause a suffocation death that could plausibly resemble a facehugger attack, but he got interrupted so the plan fell apart.
Fun Fact: in the chestburster scene none of the actors knew any of their lines or had read the script. John Hurt had to ingest a real alien parasite before hand as the special effects people forgot how to do special effects the day before.
Favorite sci-fi film. Favorite horror film. I saw it in a brand new theater with my girlfriend. It was the perfect viewing environment. Just one thing... She didn't want to ruin the moment, so she didn't tell me she had already seen the movie. ☹ After we sat down, she put both of her hands on my arm. I thought it was a romantic gesture, but no. Just before something would happen in the movie, she dug her nails into my arm, so I was already half out of my seat before the actual scare happened. I think people around us thought I was having problems as I kept jumping out of my seat. Honestly though, it was the best movie ever.
One of the neat things when they were filming it, they didn't tell anyone except John Hurt (Cain), that there was gonna be blood. they knew something was gonna happen but had no clue; i think it was a 1 take, and all natural reactions to it.
“Star Wars” happy space movie
“Alien” terrifying space movie
I saw this movie when it first came out. I remember the trailers only showed the opening title sequence, so you didn't know what to expect from the movie.
This is an absolute masterpiece. The most suspenseful film ever made.
Bilbo gets grumpy when he doesn't have his ring/alien specimen.
When all the chains are clinging and he's looking for the cat you can so the Xeno curled up hiding above.
Also the Alien at the end wasnt going to harm ripply there, it wanted to ve taken back to earth so it could spread there. Thats why it didnt attack. It cant operate the ship.
Re: Visual Effects: All in-camera miniatures and puppets. Incredible craftsmanship.
For all the people who thought there were no tough women in movies, check any top ten list and you'll always find Ripley #1. You're right about it being a groundbreaking film that inspired a plethora of copycats (too many at the time). Such a well made horror movie you sometimes forget it's also pretty hard sci fi. Amazing cast, lighting, direction, sound design, etc. Well crafted lightning in a bottle.
Ripley is one of the greatest badass characters ever, because for one thing she is a believable badass.
The scene where Dallas gets taken by the alien, I’m almost convinced Lambert got the dots mixed up. They were already having problems with it. Dallas was the one moving and the alien was staying still. Speaking of, how was that tracker detecting them when it has a weak range?
This is one of my top 10 movies ever, it is a master class in making relatable, real characters and ratcheting up the tension. It's too bad that more movies did not take the lesson that Jaws and this teach - when it comes to creature films, you don't need to show the monster too much; our minds will do most of the work, if you just let things slowly build to their natural climax
Re: the sound design - the original tagline for the film was "in space, no one can hear you scream."
I am so so happy you guys reacted to Alien! I'm a huge nerd about the whole Alien universe and Xenomorphs and it's so so good to see more people enjoy this classic.
Also, if you guys have never seen it and want to see another really good parasite type of film, I highly recommend you do a reaction to 'Splinter' released in 2008 and directed by Toby Wilkins.
Saw this in the theater by myself when I was 16. No one else wanted to go haha. Everything that you guys liked about this film was amplified tenfold in the theater. Ridley Scott, Sigourney Weaver, H. R. Giger--c'mon. One of the great horror films of all time and not a spec of the occult or religion. I don't know if you've done Blade Runner but you must. Some Kubrick too. Dr. Strangelove, Lolita. 2001: A Space Odyssey, to name a few.
What version of the film are you watching? I recently saw it in theaters for it's 45 anniversary and I haven't seen the scenes where Parker sees the xenomorph take the guy in the hat and then Ripley finding Dallas' body as she is making her way back to the life boat.
Glass isn't attacked by most acids, either. You just need containers with the right properties or, in a pinch, just put some random sacrificial material in the acid's way, like I suggested in a previous comment.
The design of this movie is the master piece of the genius H.R. Giger.
The little girl whose cat that was is a comedian and actress now, she said he was picked because of how mean he was, he could always be relied on to snarl and run away.
The famous quote: "In space, no one can hear you scream." was the tag line for this film.
I feel the "castronaut"-joke didnt get enough praise! That was hilarious xD
Haha thank youuu, so glad you appreciate it!!
The movie Spaceballs, excellent dinner scene parody!
Hello my baby, hello my honey… 🎶
I watched this in the cinema back in the 70s, when it was first released, and by some quirk of memory, (probably), I'm sure the androids speech is longer. In my memory, (I read the book of the film, so it might, just might be in there), the android says, "there's one way you might be able to kill it, reactivate me, I'm stronger than you and it won't see me as a food source", they discuss it, then conclude they can't trust him, and torch him. Never seen this in any cut, but in my mind it happened, go figure.
The entire look and feel of the movie was created by dark bio-mechanical futurist painter - Hans Rudi Giger and by film screenwriter, director and visual effects supervisor - Dan O"Bannon. Hans Rudie Giger scored the November 1978 cover of the now defunct "OMNI Magazine" - the magazine of Science fact, fiction and fantasy with his piece titled "Li 1"
Guys! Aren't models really realistic-looking? They had three full-ship models; 1-, 4-, and 12-feet long. For the underside shots, they built a 40-feet-long model for the scenes in which Kane's body was launched into space and in which the Narcissus (the shuttle) would detach from the Nostromo. You can do a lot with CGI that can't be done in real life, which is why CGI is useful; but models look darn good. They look real because they ARE real.
Alien is considered the best #1 horror movie of all time. For me #1 on my top ten list and reason many got into wanting to do Science Fiction movies besides "Star Wars, Star Trek".
Red Dwarf...that's what happens to a cat that doesn't get into the pod! 😂
Fun facts was the actors didn't know how the chest burst scene wasn't told to them. Those reactions were real
Did you miss the very first shot of the Alien when it was silently dangling there? That’s something they added to the directors cut, yet you only seem surprised by its size when it first emerged behind Brett.
Alien is peak sci-fi horror. Any film released after that can only hope for a #2 spot.
The sequel Aliens does for this movie what Terminator 2 Judgement Day does for the original Terminator, both huge blockbusters directed by James Cameron and imo the most action packed for both franchises.
BEST SCI FI EVVVVVRRRRRR! I have watched this several times - and there are still parts that 'startle me'
This is the superior alien movie by far. The horror aspect is what sets it apart.
The best thing about the first two Alien films and the last two films we don't really talk about (Alien ³, Alien Ressurrection) is the mystery behind the Xenomorph. Alien Covenant kinda ruined that mystery and the film before it Prometheus. So unless you wanna watch all films go for it but if you wanna keep the mystery alive and want more Alien content read some of the old comics and play Alien: Isolation, and its mobile game sequel Blackout.
Glad you appreciated the set design, because this movie is just pure art. A part of me is saddened watching it now in 2024, because they will never make a movie like this again... Alien and movies like it exist now as film artifacts, the product of a bygone era of movie making.
23:58 that's H.R. Geiger at work right there
I saw this movie for the first time a decade ago and found the tension and suspense staggering. It is good fun to see others watch it for the first time. Movies made today tend to jump straight to the stuff and miss the whole build up.
Originally all crew members die but the movie executives said you can't have all crew members get killed by the Alien you to have one survivor so Ridley Scott had the script rewrote to have one survivor
Don't know if you will ever read this, but since you liked "Alien" so much, I have another Sci-Fi-recommendation for you: "Outland" from 1981 starring Sean Connery.
There exist fan-theories that both are set in the same Cinematic Universe. Its not official, but if you compare the Set Design & general look and feel of both movies, you'll get where the Fans are coming from.
Ridley Scott, famous for this, Blade Runner and an advert for Hovis Bread
Saw this with an audience a few months ago - it STILL works - one of my favourite movies of all time, and your reaction was hugely entertaining to watch, thank you! Presumably you'll do ALIENS next, which is an entirely different, but completely brilliant movie. Well, I hope you do. :)
The design of the Aliens was inspired by the artwork of H.R.Giger. kind of a bio-tech style
None of it possible without the twisted biomechanical imagination of H. R. Giger.
brutal gut! habe fantastisch mitgefiebert. Kameraführung und Sound als ob man dabei war. unglaublich amazing! heute schlafe ich nicht
The alien probably broke into the ship's food stores somewhere. Maybe a crate of grain or something.
if you want more information about the "big guy in the chair", the same director filmed prometheus, which is exactly what it's about, a kind of prequel. not everyone is happy about this movie. but in my opinion it's an atmospheric spooky one
Yes!! We cannot wait to delve further into the rest of the lore!!
You could teach an entire course on movie making with this one film alone. I was too young to see it in 1979, as it was rated R and I was only 11 years old. Back in the 70's movie theaters in my home town wouldn't allow young kids into a rated R movie, even with their parents. I finally saw it a few years later around the age of 13. It terrified me and for weeks I had trouble falling and staying asleep... lol. It's hard to believe that a movie almost 45 years old still holds up so well. This is why good practical effects, camera work, set design, and acting is superior than most of the crap today. Today, most actors stand on a flat stage in a large empty room surrounded by green screens. It's much harder to act terrified when a director says... "We'll add the digital blood in post production". In 1979 the actors had blood explode all over them as the puppet alien erupted out of the chest of their friend and fellow actor. A much more visceral experience as an actor.
And... now you know how many movies, books, video games, and the culture itself that the younger generations were directly influenced by this one movie...
Ari: "Wow... this is just like Dead Space... I wonder if the scientist was sent by the company..."
Me: "Wait for it...." :)
While not quite as shocking a someone who has never seen Star Wars, it's still rare AND a lot of fun to watch younger people react to Alien for the very first time.
Fantastic reactions from both of you, you made me re-experience what I felt the first time I watched it. Thank you so much for sharing!
The fact that they got to adulthood without watching this masterpiece is already weird, but the fact that they didn't recognize Bilbo is unforgivable 😂

@@OfficialMediaKnights I stand corrected =)
watchin you atch the shuttel and then..... glorious
All I know is it scared the hell out of me when I watched in the movie theatre.
This masterpiece movie, when it came out back in 1979, scared the living dog piss outta everyone!! The acting was excellent, the plot was great, the sets were fantastic, and the originality was off the charts! Incredible horror movie!!
I just wished u guys had watched this like the rest of us when it came out in 79, in the dark.
The cat knew it was on the ship which is why it was making growling sounds.
A masterpiece of a movie! (2023.09.02)
I think you can love Event Horizon 1997 😁 Have fun😋
