ALIEN: RESURRECTION (1997) MOVIE REACTION - THIS WAS DIFFERENT! - FIRST TIME WATCHING - REVIEW

  • Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Alien: Resurrection (1997). This is the fourth installment of the iconic Alien franchise, where Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is cloned and brought back to life two centuries after her death. As she faces a new breed of xenomorphs, the tension and horror escalate and takes us through an unforgettable ride.
From the dark, futuristic atmosphere to the incredible creature effects there are a lot of elements we enjoyed in this film. However it's far from our favorite in the franchise.
Loved seeing the stack cast interact with each other as they try to survive the Xenomorphs. Call (Winona Ryder), Johner (Ron Perlman) and more are extremely charismatic on screen.
The Newborn Alien was definitely not on our bingo cards! We are glad we watched this one. It definitely offered a different tone than what we are used to expect in an Alien film.

That was a terrific and emotional scene-but then it was followed up by the odd juxtaposition of a jokey remark by Perlman’s character that immediately cheapened the previous scene’s impact (the “waste of ammo” comment). I don’t dislike this film nearly as much as some people do. In fact, I find a lot to like in it. But my major problem with it is that its tone is totally schizophrenic.

    • @mnomadvfx
      @mnomadvfx Месяц назад +4

The irony that almost everyone misses is that the 2nd film IS copying the first.
Seriously - it's so close to being the same plot just cut up and changed slightly with a much more action oriented lean to the script vs the horror in the original.
Let me break it down for you just so you know I'm not just being hyperbolic:
      Aliens = Alien
#1. Newt = Jones the cat.
#1a. Initial Newt scene is like an alien on the movement sensor = Initial movement sensor sweep of alien finds Jones, both almost end with Jones/Newt getting shocked/shot.
#1b. Ripley endangers Hicks and Bishop to go look for Newt = Ripley endangers Lambert and Parker to go look for Jones.
#2. Hudson = Lambert, both characters are basically an insert for the audiences fears.
#3. Burke = Ash, the conniving psychopathic, company centric operator.
#4. Atmosphere processor reactor = Nostromo engine reactor, both scripts push to the final encounter with the alien through the danger of the impending explosion of the reactor.
#5. Derelict space ship in Aliens special edition cut = derelict space ship in Alien.
#6. Message from Burke to LV-426 = Message from The Company to Ash.
#7. Stowaway alien queen on drop ship 2 = stowaway alien on Nostromo life pod.
#8. Final fight with alien queen ending with ejecting into space = final fight with alien ending with ejecting into space.
#9. Hicks = Parker, both are basically Ripley's love interest, Hicks is just a lot more obvious about it while Parker's attraction to her is masked by his passive aggressive behavior.
#10. Team commander Gorman dies in an air duct = Nostromo captain Dallas dies/gets abducted in an air duct (in the theatrical cut).
There is a scene which is even more egregious than those above, because it not only lifts the same visual/plot elements, but also lifts Jerry Goldsmith's score cue titled "The Recovery" wholesale from the Alien soundtrack as the background music for this scene in both cuts of Aliens.
The scene in question is when Ripley and Newt are making their way out of the atmosphere processor waiting for the elevator to arrive just prior to its explosion, and the xenomorph queen pokes its head around the corner.
At the exact moment the xenomorph queen appears the Goldsmith score cue plays.
In Alien the score cue plays when Ripley is on the way to the life pod/shuttle with Jones in tow before the Nostromo engine explodes, and the xenomorph appears causing Ripley to drop Jones and run back to the engine control room.
For time reference (H:M:S) the scenes in question happen at '01:37:24' in Alien Theatrical Cut, and at '02:18:35' in the Aliens Directors/Extended/Special Edition Cut.

He's a completely no nonsense straight man regarding the project of resurrecting the xenomorphs, but also has zero illusions about what they're making. First hint of a problem and it's everyone off the boat, no xenomorph is allowed to leave. While his death sucks, he's also given what I consider to be the best death by xenomorph ever with the lingering shot, slow realization, and the act of reaching back to pull out and look at his own brain.

Alien 4 is what happens when you bring Jean-Pierre Jeunet, a french cult filmmaker, to direct a Alien movie written by Joss Whedon. Also plaqued by studios interference, but Jeunet still comes through (and brings some of his "regulars" like Ron Perlman to the production). I would strongly suggest to add at least Jeunet's most commercial (cult) movie "Amélie" to your reaction list. One of my favorite films to this day. Also... The original alien saga... Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, what a list of world class directors...

After Scott's prequels, the common consensus is the facehugger injects an evolved form of that black goo pathogen that causes the host's genetic structure to reconfigure and the embryo is made from the newly adapted tissue. He killed the Queen, because he had genetic memories himself, and understood she was something to be reviled, but he loved his "grandmother." She knew he had no place in the world, so to speak, because he could not be free without being caught and experimented on, so, even tho she felt his love for her, and felt his pain as he died, she knew she had to do it. Then she cried about losing him, about having to kill him. What kind of life could he have had, even as a "good" hybrid, perhaps equal parts of both species? He didn't deserve to be part of that horrible experiment, and didn't deserve to die. Memories aside, he was innocent. He only killed a couple evil people, and obeyed Ripley-clone. All this is why I actually cried with her when she killed him, and him screaming out her name, not understanding why the one person he loved would end him like that. Truly a tragic creature.

There's an extended version of this movie showed them landing on the post apocalyptic Earth landscape with Call and Ripley sitting down for a conversation. It's a far better ending than the theatrical version imo. Alien fans should really seek out an excellent fan edit called Alien Rebirth that felt closer in tone with the first two movies and yes, including regaining memories of Newt you two mentioned.

@@Robert_Douglass are you referring to the extended cut or the fan edit? The extended cut can be found on the Blu-ray while the fan edit can be found and requested from some sites (hint: the word that RUclips hates starting with "red" and ends with "dit".) I don't think it's possible for anyone to upload any Alien movies on YT due to copyright.

    Couple of things:
Christie goes limp from the acid, and it is believed this is at least one way the aliens can subdue you for impregnation (in the script for Aliens they used the stinger on their tail to paralyse hosts.)
When Purvis goes on his little rampage before chest bursting, it is again believed the alien is actually taking over and using him like a meat robot. (As a defense mechanism.)
It is rumored that the newborn alien has dialogue as it is dying. Something along the lines of "Why mommy?"
Definitely not the high watermark of the series. Full of some really goofy humor and ugh... When you compare it to the criss-craft of the first two films and the sense of class that those movies have, Alien Resurrection is a joke.
On the flip side, you guys should watch Firefly and Serenity. To me, Alien Resurrection is, in a number of ways, Joss Whedon's prototype for that show. It's even said in the same (rough_ time frame from "today"

And when you've watched those two train wrecks you can safely revisit this film and smile while thinking of the good 'ol days when people actually put effort into these movies. Trust me, you'll have a whole new appreciation for this after watching one android tell another to blow while he does the fingering. And that is merely one part of two very poorly written movies where characters make obviously stupid choices. It will be aggravating.

Sadly theres things in the book that was cut or couldnt be add in the movie.
-like Johner bitterness towards Vriess. All of the betty crew, except Call, were military and fought in certain war (again thats why Johner doesnt like the idea of earth) and Christie was ambush and Vriess came to save him, but he fall in a trap and lost his legs. Christie didnt want to leave Vriess behind and came to save him. Johner got his scar because of that. Thats why he is a little bitter.
-The memories that alien queen share with ripley, in the book, both were confuse with their memories. The queen had memories with newt, (she doesnt exactly know who newt was, except that ripley, destroy her colony because of her) and ripley had with the aliens and newt (at some point she doesnt know, if newt is her child or not, because she remember newt saying mommy)
-the psychic link that the aliens have. before they escape, the queen give permission for the aliens to kill the little alien, to run off. while she give the permission, the queen was trying to calm the little alien. Thats why ripley always knew certain moves of them. Ripley could hear their psychic link... so the line "i can hear them" she really did heard them.
-The aliens never tried to kill ripley, they even assume she was one of them. They try to save her, before ripley run away and meet the betty crew.
-The new born refusing the queen as mother, and accepting ripley as a mother. That part in the book is so interesting, because we have access to ripley, the queen and new born mind. Its so chaotic and confusing for them, and for us...

14:49 "they look a bit different don't they"
The in-story explanation is that the queen also has some human dna in her, so the xenos have a more "fleshy" appearance
Though it was more likely that the design team (Woodruff and Gillis, from the previous movie too) just preferred the more "monstrous" desing over the original's more bio-mechanical

So your genetics don't change if you're carrying a Xeno. The reason she's a hybrid in this is because they cloning process wasn't perfect and the DNA of Ripley and the Queen got cross contaminated
Also the basketball scene, Sigourney Weaver ACTUALLY sank the shot. The plan was to let her throw it and cut away and then cut in a shot of the basket. But she did it and it went in and they had to cut the scene because everyone broke character in awe of her doing it (on accident)
