  • Welcome to our first time watching as we react to Prometheus (2012).
This sci-fi horror prequel to the Alien franchise takes us on a tense and thrilling journey as a team of explorers embarks on a mission to uncover the secrets of an ancient alien civilization.
Directed by Ridley Scott, this film is filled with some breathtaking visuals, a chilling and eerie atmosphere throughout the entire movie and the thing that surprised us the most, some really deep philosophical questions and themes.
The film features an ensemble cast including Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. Set in the late 21st century, the film centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as it follows a star map discovered among the artifacts of several ancient Earth cultures. Seeking the origins of humanity, the crew arrives on a distant world and discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human species.
The ending with the Deacon (A proto version of the Xenomorph) was truly chilling! We had goosebumps!

Michael Fassbender was phenomenal in this movie. The reason David is the way he is is because he’s constantly trying to learn, trying to push the boundaries of science. But he was not given any human morals or ethics when he was created. Because his creator Peter Weyland, an all powerful psychopath with god complex himself, never saw any use in morals or having any kind of conscience.
Also anyone reading this should look up the TED Talk video for Prometheus that was originally supposed to be the opening scene of the movie but it’s on RUclips now. It shows Peter Weyland as a young man giving a truly hypnotic speech giving the history of human technology all the way to the future and saying that humans are gods now. It really should’ve been in the final movie but look it up for yourselves.

Fun facts: Ridley Scott was going to use VFX for Shaw’s body during the surgery scene until Noomi Rapace told him that she could do things with her stomach so that’s actually her moving her stomach like that. They say it freaked out the crew when she did it but they used that instead of doing VFX.

If I remember correctly, one of the reasons the Engineer was angry is because he put himself in cryosleep since he was infected by what wiped out the rest of his team. He was hoping that he would be awakened when he would be able to be treated, but instead realized it was the humans who he was initially sent out to exterminate that awakened him.

He was angry at how violent the humans are. The Engineers seeded earth with life as well as many other worlds but earth was 1 of a few that actually succeeded. Unfortunately humans were greedy, vicious and cruel causing the Engineers to view them as failures. They tried to guide humanity towards the right path by abducting a human (Jesus) and teaching that human the values of life and unity before returning him to his kind to spread the teachings. This man was crucified for his beliefs and his death sealed the fate of humanity in the eyes of the Engineers who began their plan to destroy humanity. Fortunately for humanity something went wrong and the Engineers were wiped out with only 1 surviving in hibernation. roughly 2000 years later the crew of the Prometheus arrives and wake the last Engineer. At first he is curious about humans and doesn't attack right away... But as soon as weyland begins to show violents against shaw the Engineer see's that humanity has not changed and he then attacks and prepares to finish his mission of wiping out humanity.

What are you talking about? Elba's character was utterly worthless. The 'captain' of a mission like this shouldn't look and behave like he just went on a three day bender. The only reason it isn't more glaringly offensive is because nearly all the characters are as poorly written. You usually get one 'fish out of water' character in a cast so the audience can be brought along with the story easier. The problem with Prometheus is that nearly every character is unprofessional, needlessly hostile, stupid, greedy, drunken, or a combination of multiple fatal character flaws. And this movie tanked because of that.

@@sMooVe1982 Because a superior alien, not to mention the creators of life on Earth, hellbent on destroying it would never waste their time explaining anything to insignificant trash (humans/Earth life). The scene would have made humans look important enough for the engineers but humans were not. Plus it also makes sense just from the few seconds he observed Weyland. Weyland thought he was their equal, that arrogance alone and his already weak fragile body showed otherwise and his treatment of Shaw was enough for the engineer to kill them all on the spot. Weyland thinking he was a "God" said more than enough.

    • @DarknessIsThePath
      @DarknessIsThePath 19 дней назад +3

@@sMooVe1982 The problem is though that this scene is deleted so it is pointless to draw that conclusion. What Ridley Scott likely wanted was for anyone to draw their own conclusions, a sort of meta scene. Like, the engineer is "listening" to Shaw and David very briefly while Weyland tries to shut her up. he ofc then goes on a killing spree. What he wanted was for the audience to be as lost as Shaw and Weyland, we will never understand their reasoning or purpose because we do not deserve it as the primitive species we are compared to them. So in that sense its irrelevant to include the deleted scene because it is simply not cannon to the official movie. Does it mean that it is wrong? No, but the scene will always leave the answer open to endless interpretations.

In a moment of pure true panic, horror, and adrenaline I'm not sure my mind would be capable of any thought deeper then run. But that's reality, this is a movie and they definitely could of done that scene better.
It reminds me of the scene in "the expanse" where the guy opens his helmet in space. Realistic yes, but it pulls everybody out of the narrative with a "yeah right" moment. Almost like a purposeful troll by the writers because they are correct, but the audience doubts based on what they have learned from other media vs factual science.

One you understand the mythology behind the name of the film, you have a better appreciation for it. Prometheus is a Titan from Greek mythology, who played a crucial role in the creation and advancement of humanity. His story is central to themes of defiance, punishment, and the quest for knowledge. Prometheus is often credited with the creation of humanity from clay. However, his most famous myth involves his defiance of Zeus, the king of the gods. According to the myth, after creating humans, Prometheus took pity on them because they were weak and vulnerable. To help them survive, he decided to steal fire from the gods and give it to humanity. Fire symbolizes knowledge, technology, and civilization, making Prometheus a symbol of human advancement and enlightenment. In modern times, Prometheus is sometimes viewed as a cautionary figure, representing the dangers of overreaching or the unintended consequences of technological advancement.

    • @injunsun
      @injunsun 4 дня назад

See also, the parallel story of Lucifer, the Light Bringer, and various other cognates in the Near East. In many of them, the defiant one is actually not defiant over all, just defiant of the Sky God, while obeying the Earth Goddess, whose mercy was why enlightenment was given, and why, in Genesis, Yaweh/Elohim says "they" need to get the first people out of Eden, lest they eat of the Tree of Eternal Life, "and become like us," that being, him and Asherah. Ditching the Mother Goddess influence changes the focus of these stories from parents arguing over their kids, to one of mere betrayal for personal reasons by an underling. It would be interesting to know the cultural reasons why ancient people, mostly men, decided portraying it like this was better? Then Zoroastrianism gave us the Nemesis, which idea overlaid the formerly minor "villain." Anyway, thanks for sharing your perspective. It is helpful.

Are cars Alien!? (This will make more sense as times goes on).
Ridley Scott before making this film said he hated where every film after Alien went and he wanted to "Rewrite it all".
The film is a good film... but not a good "Alien" film. Ridley is lost as a director... even after this film he said he made a mistake and then rewrote everything he had planned for the next film... Covenant... he did the exact same thing after Covenant... he is just going by the fly and off the top of his head... purely to rewrite established lore, he is like a child throwing a temper tantrum and a god complex. And Alien: Romulus is the exact same... (it's clear he massively interfered) with literately dozens of plot holes.
The last dedicated true Alien film to me was Alien 3... With AVP and AVP2 being acceptable.

The opening sequence is a fantastic piece of visual storytelling. An alien race comes to a backwater planet, sends an emissary to the surface to sacrifice himself, breaking his body into its most basic parts, in order to seed the planet with life. The emissary was humanoid and we, ourselves, are very similar, thus leading to the question of whether or not these Engineers did, indeed, engineer life on our planet. Us.

I think Ridley Scott was hired to make an Alien prequel but actually wanted to make a film about other ideas, but the final script couldn’t get away from the Alien universe enough to be its own thing, thus the expectations on it were very misplaced.

Prometheus feels more like Ridley Scott's "2001: A Space Odyssey" than a proper prequel to Alien, more in common thematically with Blade Runner with the questions it raises than with the Alien franchise as a whole, definitely the black sheep of the series, and I get why some people like it- it's a great science fiction film. I also get why some people don't like it- it's a bad Alien film.
Glass half full Prometheus introduces David, brilliantly brought to life by Fassbender and is by far the best character since Ripley- would love to see David cross paths with Ripley while they still can, the perfect protagonist vs the perfect antagonist vs the perfect organism would be one for the Alien history books

The reason why the Engineers wanted to wipe out humanity:
There is a big, complex mythology here, but to put it simple: they created us, but were extremely disappointed in what we had turned into and became a threat, especially when we gained the capability of space travel. The first sign of the 'depraved' state of humanity for them is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, whom according to this lore was actually one of their messengers.

Just Some clarity that i hope answers some of yall questions:
The xenomorph like creature in the end is called a Deacon and and the giant facehugger is called a Trilobite and when a Trilobite infects a host like a regular facehugger then its gives birth to a deacon. And the deacon was the one who was on the wall. The black goo makes anyone who come in contact act extremely aggressive and violent like a xenomorph. But there are still plenty of questions yet answered like who created the black goo and what was its purpose and One of my most top questions is what the hell was the engineers running from in the recording, and how the hell did that one engineer in the first Alien movie appear on that planet with a chest hole in his armor? 🤨 that’s why I love this franchise. The curiosity is top-tier
(And by the way the engineer ship in this movie is not the same one in alien that landed on LV 426 the planet, the Nostromo landed on)

For this purpose they made the humans almost identical to them, and after a time we overpopulated and sinned so the gods decided to destroy us.
You can see the references to sumerian culture in the buttons that David touched here and there, they are cuneiform characters, the symbols the Sumerians used to write.

      Completely disagree
Ridley Scot completely lost any common sense when he made this and Covenant.
Prometheus COULD have been good but it failed from a lack of solid direction and absolutely stupid edits that removed vital information that shouldn't have been relegated to a Director's Cut edition and Covenant was just plain garbage and EASILY the absolute worst film in the series, with a plot that completely disregarded the mythology established in the original film to try and create some new nonsensical timeline.
Prometheus and Covenant should be considered their own thing, as they have no business being part of the Alien franchise.

I do genuinely love the addition of The Engineers to the lore, they’re essentially gods who create life throughout the universe and also wipe it out if that life is deemed too dangerous to allow to exist. And the idea that Engineers created a mutagen or “Pathogen” as its called by Weyland-Yutani in *Aliens: Fireteam Elite* (which is a game I’d love to see them play) as a way to wipeout life that they created on a planet as essentially a clean slate, but just like with humans created bio weapons it got out of their control.
There’s also a scene in the original script that showed that the last engineer has a full conversation with David, Shaw, and Weyland. Explaining that they wanted to wipe out humanity because they were deemed far too dangerous to allow to exist in the galaxy. They visited humanity when they were after their most violent and actually invited a human to live with them briefly , so that when he would come back to earth, he would explain that they needed to become less hostile and treat each other better. However, they wound up killing him. And it’s implied that that person was Jesus Christ. And that was what pushed them to try and go forward with wiping out humanity.
Sadly there’s far too many continuity errors that show that they didn’t put much care into it being a true prequel. Such as the fact that the terrain around the derelict ship is completely flat but in Alien it’s a jagged rocky hellscape. Or that the space jockey (not the engineer inside it) doesn’t have the chest wound from a chestburster like in Alien. And finally this is NOT LV-426 it’s another planet altogether.

There are theories in the Alien fandom community that the Engineer in Prometheus is not the same species as the dead 'Space Jockey' in the first Alien film. Even their spaceships are not the same though sharing similar design architecture but different in technology. Theres a comic that explains briefly that the Space Jockey is an ancient giant species of humanoids called the Mala'kak....their bodies have the actual Elephant like look where the Engineers created their suits based on them as a homage to their creator. The Mala'kak were so advanced in manipulation of bio matter that their entire technology is based on the combination of organic & mechanical elements into something bizzare that the material is like flesh bone & metallic all together.....basically what their ships were which also made them kind of 'ships being alive' and the pilot being fused into the chair into a symbiotic connection with the ship.

26:18 is the moment where you can finally understand that _David is the close to the main character of the film._ He's the creation living amongst his creators, he understands more than anyone else does about the Engineers, and he knows just how uncaring they BOTH are to their creations.
When it comes to the super corporate people like Mr. Weyland as well as strongly religious people like Shaw - they both act very coldly towards the Synthetics in dehumanizing ways. It's not a satisfying answer just like David's conversation about the disappointment of that answer and foreshadows how the more militaristic Engineer installation doesn't care about them at ALL.

Prometheus was composed by Marc Streitenfeld. He did most of the musical score while the two main themes were composed by Harry Gregson-Williams. What made this one rather interesting was that the music was actually reversed and the orchestra played the music backwards… to give it an “unsettling sound” that they were going for. The music as a whole give off lots of different feels and emotions. Some is elegant, hopeful, grand and hauntingly beautiful or even adventurous as you pointed out. The main themes being prime examples of those kinds of feelings. The other half of the score is eerie, suspenseful and downright chilling. It includes all of my favorite elements within this style of the genre: frenzied tremolo and pizzicato string textures, intense brass sections and some dissonant electronics. The choirs here while being subtle, they’re also pretty creepy at times. It was also nice to hear a little of Jerry Goldsmith’s OG Alien theme played in early in the movie too.
It sounded like it was played on either synths or an electronic string instrument of some kind. Still sounded lovely though!

Has anyone ever noticed the ressemblances between Alien VS Predator and Prometheus scripts ?
We start with our female protagonist carrying family issues and a cave filled with archeological interest. Then, we go on to a briefing with interconnected historical civilisations which never actually met, leading the big boss of the Weylan Yutani to mount an expedition because of it and explaining the plan to a crew that is just meeting apparently. The crew then reach some sort of not easily accessible temple and, upon arrival, one of the character question the need for weapons. Inside the temple, they discover an universal language and some technology from an advanced civilisation. Everybody starts dying including the big boss of the Company from the very hand of the advanced civilization. And both movies ends with a member of the advanced civilization giving birth to a new variant of the Xenomorph.
It's interesting because Ridley Scott always dissed the AVP movies.

Bear in mind that AvP took a lot of it plot points from the original 1977 StarBeast script, and in the early development of ALIEN, some plot points were removed. If you look at the production paintings in the earliest stages of ALIEN you can see that AvP was building's its story around stuff that was ultimately excised from ALIEN due to budget. With that in mind it's not surprising that Scott would be revisiting those things that he was involved in developing when looking into doing his prequel.

Both are loosely based on Dan OBannon's original Alien script, which is in turn loosely based on HP Lovecraft's "At The Mountains of Madness". Which is also why Guillermo del Toro couldn't make his "At the Mountains of Madness" adaptation.

Yall weren't at all bothered by the lack of continuity in the tech seeing as how this was supposed to take place before Alien? That's usually the primary complaint from people and I was surprised neither of you mentioned it. The set design didn't feel connected to what we've seen before. This felt like it took place well AFTER even Alien Resurrection when you look at the ship design and technology all around.

The planet in alien is called LV-426 whereas the planet in this movie is called LV-223. They are both small moons that orbit the same gas giant called calpamos. Given the information presented in this movie we are safe to assume that the Engineers somehow created the xenomorphs and a ship loaded with eggs left LV-223, perhaps heading to Earth. During the initial flight though, the Engineer was attacked by a facehugger and crash landed on the next moon over which is LV-426. The Engineer would die from the chestburster (We know this happens because the crew in the first movie said that his bones were bent outwards like he exploded from inside) and the xenomorph that was born would likely of just died after a few months since it would have no food or way of following its purpose of reproduction. The main plothole in the story however, is the fact that the Engineer before dying activated a warning beacon which is what the nostromo in the first movie picked up on. That being the case and Prometheus being set earlier in the timeline, shouldn't this crew have noticed the beacon signal coming from the moon next door?
    Names:
The facehugger in this movie is called a trilobite.
The Xenomorph thing at the end is called a Deacon.
I don't know what the worm thing is called.

Screenwriter Jon Spaihts said we’ve never seen anyone survive a chestburster which was the inspiration for the med pod scene. In the original script, which you can find online, a classic chestburster is removed from Shaw. It is expelled from the pod and she is trapped inside it watching the Xenomorph grow and kill people outside. IMO, that would have been more horrifying.

The cast and crew are often overlooked in this movie: Michael Fassbender (take your pick), Charlize Theron (take your pick), Idris Elba (take your pick but really worth seeing him in Luther), Rafe Spall, Guy Pearce, Noomi Rapace, Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones), Benedict Wong...then add the director, producer, cinematographer, composer...this should have been bigger than it was. I think a couple of reasons why it wasn't centre on the gaps in the story (that the DC deals with) and the scientific "Hang on a minute??" moments.

I saw the first film when I was far too young to do so and the discovery of the Space Jockey was immediately among my favorite parts of the entire story. He seemed this ancient, enigmatic, biomechanical creature, utterly unlike us or anything we know from everyday life. This is just another way of saying that he seemed very alien, which added to the sense of mystery and discomforting atmopshere of the entire first film. To my mind, he was not just mysterious for the sake of being mysterious, for his enigmatic nature added to the sense that the events unfolding in the film were unknowable and uncontrollable to its characters. Whatever the Space Jockey was, he clearly belonged to a highly advanced species, and yet he died from the same threat that then came to face the much less advanced travelers on the Nostromo. I feel like some of that atmosphere has been removed from the film in retrospect because of the newer entries into the franchise, and that seems like a shame. While changes like these may seem trivial, my view is that they reduce the films, and make them more like regular monster movies.

The Engineers did not want to experiment on their own kind. People on earth were made to be experimented on to create the deadliest creatures. As it was in AVP. In the "making of the alien movie" they started with a squid like facehugger and a Prometheus Xenocobra as the chestburster. But They went with Giger's artwork to make the final versions.
