Something about Johnny Depp that makes him even more amazing to me is that he doesn’t take himself at all seriously as an actor. He’s physically beautiful but he’s more than willing to act the fool. I’ve heard it said that Johnny Depp is a character actor trapped in a leading man’s body and I think that is so true. I read that when Robin Williams was asked if there was any actor that he wanted to work with but hadn’t yet, he immediately named Johnny Depp. Wouldn’t that have been wonderful??! He said that Depp was absolutely fearless as far as comedy was concerned…high praise from a master. High praise, indeed!!!

FANTASTIC REACTION, YALL!!! Some trivia time… The scene’s where Ichabod is being dragged behind the carriage, the Headless Horseman was… great action sequences. They were all filmed on a strip of a set, so basically, it’s a set of a part of a road. It was not very long. All of the trees were decorated and set. What you saw was the genius of Tim Burton and the Cinematographer. He used so many inventive ways to use camera angles to create the entire sequence. You would never know you are seeing the same strip of a set, using the coach, horses, everything. It looks like a real dirt road that went on for miles! Also, when Johnny Depp was being dragged, he was running a fever and was sick but he knew they needed to get the shots so he pushed on ahead. Johnny always keeps one thing from each movie he does. With this film, he kept the Iron Madden that Lisa Marie was killed in. The complete town was built for this film. AMAZING Art/Set decorations! After the filming, the crew has to put the whole area back to the way it was before they started building the sets. The people in the area asked them to keep the Windmill, but legally they couldn’t. A LOT of the imagery you saw from Burton’s direction came from Disney’s “Ichabod and Mr. Toad”. It’s a shortened cartoon that tells the same tale. The shot where Brom Bones was acting as if he was the Headless Horseman to scare Ichabod is straight from Disney. The Horseman holding a flaming, carved pumpkin and throwing it at Ichabod’s head? From Disney. The idea of throwing a flaming pumpkin and hitting his prey is from Washington Irving. Whoever gets hit goes into a coma and dies. If they don’t die, they awaken with a “super” power. A friend of mine wrote a trilogy of books called, “Rise Headless and Ride: The Jason Crane Series”. It is set in today with Jason, who is the Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grandson of Ichabod Crane. His parents are dead, so he lives with his Granny. She moves them Sleepy Hollow where Jason has to go to school with the bully football player who is the Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grandson of Brom Bones. My friend moved to Sleepy Hollow to get everything correct, the names of the streets, where building are, where the bridge is, etc. He was given special permission to have access to the Historical Society that over sees all of Washington Irving’s life. He wrote me into book Three and HE DIDN’T KILL ME OFF!! My character got to live on! He has now moved to Salem. He is taking the same characters and is writing of the Witch Trials. The books are on Audible…
That is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. We love hearing about people’s creative ventures and writing books with such rich lore sounds like so much fun! We’ll check them out whenever we’re out on our next trip. Thank you so much!
That's really cool. I'd love to find and read those books. Little Known Fact about the Headless Horseman, it's actuall MUCH older than the War For Independence... True, the Story of Icabad Crane and the Headless Horseman came from there and then, but the mythology of the Headless Horseman dates back even farther to old Celtics myths. Irish and Danish mythology has the "Dullahan” also known then as “Gan Ceann". It's HOW the Headless Horseman from Sleepy Hollow rose back up to Search for his head. Fun Facts.
It's very Gothic feel about it. If you love this, you should check out 1992 Bram Stoker's Dracula. It had almost the same Gothic feel too. It's an almost faithful adaptation to the novel. Really creepy too.
YES, LOVE THIS MOVIE! It was originally going to be a slasher film involving teenagers getting stranded in Sleepy Hollow and encountering someone dressed like the Headless Horseman but later learn it's the REAL Headless Horseman. Before Johnny Depp was cast as Ichabod Crane, Daniel Day Lewis, Liam Neeson and Leonardo DiCaprio were considered for the role. Marlon Brando was going to play the Headless Horseman but was replaced by Christopher Walken. Winona Ryder was considered to play Katrina Van Tassel until Christina Ricci was cast.
It was a fantastic watch! Loved the dialogue and I’m so happy I had no idea of what to expect. When I realized it was gonna be a story about the headless horseman I was genuinely excited! Glad that Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci got the roles! Thank you so much for commenting 😃
The Headless horse man in both this movie & the original novel of sleepy hollow is based on an actual Celtic mythology of an entity in Ireland known by a couple of names, eg The Dullahan , Crom Dubh/ Black Tom, who is the Original Headless HorseMan & is a part of the Unseelie Court( Court of Dark Fairies). In the original stories / Myths, the only way to keep the Dullahan away is to have a piece of pure gold on you, regardless of whatever form it is, ie a hair pin, pendant, cross, pentacle, coin etc. as long as you have a piece of pure gold on your person & in some telling, where the piece of gold can be seen on you, the Dullahan is so terrified at the sights gold it keeps him away completely.
So amazing that Director Tim Burton has worked with most of the actors and actresses in other well-known movies, this one included- Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, the Batman movies, Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to name some!!!!
fun fact: although Christopher Walken play the hessen, when he was headless all the stunt work was played by Ray Park most famously known as Darth Maul from Star Wars episode 1
The headless horseman was played by Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars The Phantom Menace), who wore a green screen mask over his head so that it could be digitally removed in post-production. The collar of the costume was also CG to help mask the transition between the practical costume and digital head removal. All of the severed heads were practical props as well. They spent a massive part of the budget to make sure each severed head matched its actor in great detail. I don't remember which cast member it was, but one of them was allowed to keep their head, which they then used to traumatize their wife at home, by placing it in the fridge.
There's a 1998 miniseries called "Merlin" with Sam Neill and Helena Bonham Carter which is a great watch. The main antagonist is also played by Miranda Richardson (the stepmother in this movie).
This is one of my favorite Johnny Depp movies, one of my favorite accents he has done, and pretty much everything about this film is great. After this I highly suggest another great and tragically underrated Johnny Depp movie is 'From Hell'. Another mystery movie about another famous story: Jack the Ripper. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
When it came out people decried it a little because of the brightness of the blood. "They could have made it look more natural" was the reasoning. While I don't know if that was confirmed by Tim Burton, but years later people have began to speculate that this was a homage to the old Hammer Horror movies. They were the first prominent horror movies in colour and they made the blood extra bright for contrast and effect. Of course it was intentional to begin with and made for a great effect. Sometimes people overlook things like that at first.
Loved yalls reactions to everything so far. New subber here. I thought I'd let you know that the location they used the really used some of the town and alot of the fog was real but they added some more to really kick up the spookiness of the town.
Thanks for subbing dude! It means the world to us. I'd love to go check out the town at some point! It looks like a cool road trip to do during spooky season 😀
I love this movie so much! Tim Burton is one of the best direct in this kind of movie genre and cinematography. I love the casting of this movie especially Christina Ricci (who played Wednesday/girl in Casper) and of course the amazing Johnny Depp ❤🔥
I saw this five times in theaters when I was nine. My mom was very lenient on rated R movies with me. I love this story as a kid and I love every iteration. Had to Subscribe to y’all👏👍👍👍
I love this movie and I haven't seen many reactions to it. I was excited to stumble upon your channel and see it in your uploads! Excellent reaction and I appreciate your discussions about the movie making process and storytelling. I suspect you've seen A Nightmare on Elm Street, so I'll suggest From Hell as the next Depp movie to check out. And check out The Dead Zone for more Christopher Walken, or you could go with The Deer Hunter. Walken won a best supporting actor Oscar for that one, but, man, it's a grim movie.
I absolutely love old Tim Burton's films. They had their own absolutely authentic gloomy atmosphere, into which you are completely immersed. All modern works are mainly rendered using computer graphics, which are very visible and spoil the whole feeling of realism.
On the topic of mysterious beheadings (yikes) I truly hope some studio makes a film about Nahanni Valley, also known as The Valley of The Headless Men. It's a natural park area in Canada, a huge valley inside a canyon 130 km long (80 miles), surrounded by cliffs 1 km high (3300 feet). There is only one entrance at the south, and there are barely any areas free of trees or hills where helicopters could land, none for airplanes. Over the centuries there have been mysterious events. The valley was the home of the Naha people (hence the name), a native tribe known for raiding and pillaging their neighbors, who lived around the canyon. One day, for unknown reasons, the entire Naha all disappeared just like that. Locals tell stories of dangerous spirits that inhabitate that region. Over the past 200 years, several expeditions have disappeared in the valley, appeared brutally murdered, or even appeared decapitated -the heads were never found- like explorer brothers Willie McLeod and Frank McLeod in 1908, who were looking for gold mines, disappeared, and their headless bodies were later found in the valley, their belongings still with them but their heads never to be found. In 1946 geologists Frank Henderson and John Patterson explored the valley and split up, agreeing to meet back at the entrance a few weeks later. Henderson showed up but Patterson never appeared again. Henderson came back to the valley with a search party, wanting to rescue Patterson wherever he was. The first night the party camped inside Nahanni, a group of First Nations natives approached them in the middle of the night, and told them that "everyone had to leave immediately", as the natives had seen "white figures" roaming the valley, looking for them.
I grew up in the Bronx and my cousin lived in Tarrytown and every halloween, I'd drive over to her house and we would drive all around the roads and fields of Sleepy Hollow...but never met the headless horseman...It was just fun!
Dumbledore, Count Doku (Sauroman the white), Emperor Palpatine, Uncle Vernon, Wednesday, Gabriel, Johnny Rico and Captain Jack Sparrow all in one movie
Produced by Francis Ford Coppola, and directed by Tim Burton? This movie is as gothic as it could be! 😂We don't get much gothic romance films nowadays, so this movie holds a special place in my heart 👍
If you still don't know the original story (which you clearly didn't at the time of this reaction since you weren't expecting the headless horseman), I strongly recommend reading it - it's not very long, and while the movie diverges from it greatly, comparing the original will show you why certain scenes were in the movie at all. I also recommend the Disney adaptation, only about 45 minutes long, which has lots of Disney touches but is extremely faithful to the basic plot, and presents the story very effectively. The idea of the headless horseman is clearly inspired by the Irish folklore about the Dullahan, and the original story's idea that the horseman cannot cross a bridge is taken from the Robert Burns poem Tam O'Shanter.
Danny Elfman is definitely one of my favorite composers but I think he's best work is a non Tim Burton movie called Black Beauty from 1994. The music is so beautiful and moving. I cry every time I watch that film.
They departed big time from the original story, which is just as scary. Ichabod Crane was a teacher, not a sheriff, or criminologist. There also were no witches, or orphans in the story. I loved the story made by Tim Burton, but the only thing 'Sleepyhollow' about it was the Hessian soldier who lost his head.
Fun Fact: Christina Ricci was 18/19 when she played the role of Katrina... Explains why she and Depp don't share a single smooch given the fact that he was 35 at the time.
You know what… the fact that I love this movie so much and never noticed this shows that Hollywood CAN make a large age difference between cast members but have a love story and not be creepy. 😮
Danny Elfman, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. the best Trio you never find again. Actually its true that british people using german mercenary, very often. And other funfact: Your brain is still alive after decapitated, for 5~6 minutes, depends how the head is landing.
One of my favourite movies. In the same vein I suggest Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola with Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder and Interview with a vampire by Neil Jordan with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Very good and visually stunning movies
The Headless Horseman was played by Christopher Walken for when he had his head. Ray Park played the Horseman for most of the film, he also played Darth Maul in Phantom Menace, Toad in X-men, and Snake Eyes in GI Joe Retaliation.
You may not have recognized Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman. It was him throughout the movie. They just digitally removed his head. Having been born in 1977 and having grown up in the 70's through 90's, I've seen LOTS of Christopher Walken's movies. You two should check him out and see if there are some future reaction videos you can do with some of his movies.
Walker is wonderful but I believe they did use body doubles as well. A riding stunt man, Ray Park, was actually in the saddle when the headless horseman’s head was off. My understanding is that Walken didn’t like horses much and was afraid of them. He said they didn’t like him..lol! A reaction to The Deer Hunter would be interesting. I have trouble watching that movie but I might be able to watch a reaction. The Russian Roulette scenes are horrific to me…
Actually Ray Park was the Stunt double as the Headless Horseman. Look it up and you'll see the photos. Christopher Walken played the Hessian Horseman pre-headless. 👍
You can visit Sleepy Hollow by Metro North train from Manhattan. The cemetery, church, and bridge (no longer covered). Sleepy Hollow is a Dutch settlement in near Spuyten Duyvill Bridge ("spitting Devil" in Dutch). Actor Christopher Lee, who plays the magistrate assigning Ichabod Crane to the village of Sleepy Hollow, is seated on the magistrate's bench, which appears to have "bat wings" emerging from the sides. It is Tim Burton's nod to the actor's famous dracula roles from the 1960's. New York was originally named New Amsterdam when the Dutch settled there in the 1600's. It was renamed for the then Duke of York when the British took over the land during the Revolutionary War.
There was a big missed opportunity to have Ichabod be constantly eating. That was part of the original tale and it was also in the Disney animated short.
Am I the only one who feels bad for the rider? Like, yeah, he liked to kill, but it wasnt like he just wandered around killing willy-nilly, he killed active combatants on the battlefield. That is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, despite his motives. The written story is all over the place, unlike the movie, but I dont recall from either one that the rider would be mentioned together with any crime before his death. Especially not in the movie, because in the movie the thing that actually kills him is his pity for the two girls, despite the fact that he was at the very moment hunted by the vengeful American soldiers. He doesnt even kill the girl in revenge. So first he just fights as a mercenary, then he is hunted, then he spares two kids and dies as a result of that, and then he is damned and forced to do things he never done before (like kill unarmed civilians) for whoever steals his skull. Kinda unfair if you ask me. There are tons of people whose only crime is that they wanted to kill enemy soldiers, yet none is usually mentioned as deserving such fate.
34:43 He could see just fine. Ray Park was wearing a blue ski mask the whole time so they could edit his head out of the film. The most use of CGI in the film was simply to fill in the collar to his suit wherever it got obscured by the head.
love this movie ... the story of Icabod and the horseman was pretty well known for a while.. fun to watch your reaction not knowing it was the headless horseman involved... great reaction.. speaking of fairy tales have you seen Ever After?
My all time favourite movie (apart from LotR, but I count all 3 films as a singular trilogy rather than individual movies) I don't know why, but I just always loved this movie since I was a child, it's probably the singular reason why I've never found horror movies scary, as I used to watch this endlessly

Kenneth Branaugh's Frankenstein is also a great gothic horror
Tim Burton, Danny Elfman, and Johnny Depp. Recipe for perfection.
I love Christopher Lee in front of the Eagle, with the wings spread.
It invokes his Dracula days so well.
Y'all's reaction to Casper Van Dien getting sliced was priceless.
Goddamn it Rico! Lol
From the characters, set designs, costumes, story & Danny Elfman's incredible score... just everything! It's one of my favourite films of all time ❤👍
The Headless horse man in both this movie & the original novel of sleepy hollow is based on an actual Celtic mythology of an entity in Ireland known by a couple of names, eg The Dullahan , Crom Dubh/ Black Tom, who is the Original Headless HorseMan & is a part of the Unseelie Court( Court of Dark Fairies).
The fight scenes were done by Ray Park, another stunt man also played the Horseman for the riding scenes and others.
“We are dealing with a madman” he says this whilst drenched in blood 😂 love that moment always cracks me up
I love the way Miranda Richardson holds her arms up on her dress towards the end when it’s revealed she’s still alive.
There's a 1998 miniseries called "Merlin" with Sam Neill and Helena Bonham Carter which is a great watch. The main antagonist is also played by Miranda Richardson (the stepmother in this movie).
Christina Ricci is so beautiful
This is my second favorite Tim Burton film. My all time favorite being Batman (mostly because of Jack Nicholson).
I LOVE THIS FILM!!!!!! it´s one of my absolute favorite comfort movies
What do you think of Johnny's movie the ninth gate?
Christopher Lee, one of the all-time greats.
This movie really does have some of the best actors ever in it.
Shame it gets slept on when it comes to other Tim Burton films.
Miranda Richardson (the stepmom) is in Harry Potter, too (Rita Skeeter)
Loved yalls reactions to everything so far. New subber here. I thought I'd let you know that the location they used the really used some of the town and alot of the fog was real but they added some more to really kick up the spookiness of the town.
Thanks for subbing dude! It means the world to us. I'd love to go check out the town at some point! It looks like a cool road trip to do during spooky season 😀
Great video guys, sleepy hollow Is one of my favorite movies of Johnny Depp.
I love this movie so much! Tim Burton is one of the best direct in this kind of movie genre and cinematography. I love the casting of this movie especially Christina Ricci (who played Wednesday/girl in Casper) and of course the amazing Johnny Depp ❤🔥
The almost colorless atmosphere of the movie makes it all the more spooky and top of the line horror movie material
I saw this five times in theaters when I was nine. My mom was very lenient on rated R movies with me. I love this story as a kid and I love every iteration. Had to Subscribe to y’all👏👍👍👍
Thank you so much for the sub and wonderful comment! We loved this movie and love sharing it with those that loved it too!
Wow ! I also saw this movie 5 times in theaters! I was 15 years old! It's the movie I saw the most often at the theatre!
The Opening scene with the Great Martin Landau is a real treat. He is my Favorite Bela Legosi.
1999 was crazy year for FUN films.
The Matrix, The Mummy, and Sleepy Hollow
I was very lucky with that childhood
I love this telling of the story. Enjoy your content so much. Cheers!
I visit Sleepy Hollow (NY) almost every other Halloween. The town goes all out. Love it.
I grew up in the Bronx and my cousin lived in Tarrytown and every halloween, I'd drive over to her house and we would drive all around the roads and fields of Sleepy Hollow...but never met the headless horseman...It was just fun!
Christopher Lee’s character told Ichobard that there had been 3 murders in a fortnight (2 weeks).😊
The step mothers dress at the 3rd act, sick! I love that dress
Bless ya'll... love this movie. Been watching you 2 for almost 2 years now, ya'll have changed a lot lol
Great Reactions Everyone To One Of My All Time Favorite Movie's
Dumbledore, Count Doku (Sauroman the white), Emperor Palpatine, Uncle Vernon, Wednesday, Gabriel, Johnny Rico and Captain Jack Sparrow all in one movie
one of the best Tim Burton’s film
Produced by Francis Ford Coppola, and directed by Tim Burton? This movie is as gothic as it could be! 😂We don't get much gothic romance films nowadays, so this movie holds a special place in my heart 👍
I saw it twice in the theater when it came out! Still love it to this day! Great movie. Thank you for reacting to it.
This movie is in my top 5 favorite movies, ever. :D & I love how Ray Park was the stunt double, for the Headless Horseman. :D
The horseman is actually the greatest headhunter out there 😂
The bit in the beginning, when Marin landau is utterly silent, is outstanding.
I loved their reaction.
one thing to remembering in the source material Ichabod Crane was a school master and the Hessian/headless horseman is played by Christopher Walken
The idea of the headless horseman is clearly inspired by the Irish folklore about the Dullahan, and the original story's idea that the horseman cannot cross a bridge is taken from the Robert Burns poem Tam O'Shanter.
great reaction
theres different interps of sleepy hollow that people enjoy
this one is enjoyable at best,
though it is suspenseful
Depp is hilarious
Danny Elfman is definitely one of my favorite composers but I think he's best work is a non Tim Burton movie called Black Beauty from 1994. The music is so beautiful and moving. I cry every time I watch that film.
I'm from sleepy hollow n.y and that pumpkin head scene is basically how the original story ended
The doctor was played by Ian Mcdiarmid who was Palpatine in the Star Wars Saga.😊
@Mella0223 Not creepy... So long as you don't look further into these things 😬
i loved the series they made with the same name (and similar story)
If you’re a fan of Christina Ricci, I suggest some of her quirkier films like Pumpkin or Penelope.
Sneaking into movies is a great childhood hobby ❤
I used to play this soundtrack at work, i love this movie!! I saw it when it came out and WOW!!!
The Russian Roulette scenes are horrific to me…
@@myroselle6987I was terrified of that movie as well. Whew, I've only seen it once.
Actually Ray Park was the Stunt double as the Headless Horseman. Look it up and you'll see the photos. Christopher Walken played the Hessian Horseman pre-headless. 👍
sleepy hollow the series is awesome too
Michael Gough played James Hardenbrook. He will always be Alfred to me. ❤
The windmill was a homage to James Whale’s Frankenstein.
HP’s uncle finally got what he deserved lol !
There was a big missed opportunity to have Ichabod be constantly eating. That was part of the original tale and it was also in the Disney animated short.
Love Christopher Lee earlier performance as the judge
“Hold my typewriter” had me dying.
this movie had such a wide spread cast
harry potter, beetlejuice, POTC, freakin star wars, lord of the rings
amazing lineup
Yall didnt read Headless Horseman in middle school? American folklore? John henry? To start a fire?
So OG '89 Alfred, Dumbledore 2, The Galactic Emperor, Saruman and The Principal from Ferris Bueller walked into a bar...
I visited Sleepy Hollow, NY a few years back during Halloween and it's incredible.
My all time favourite movie (apart from LotR, but I count all 3 films as a singular trilogy rather than individual movies) I don't know why, but I just always loved this movie since I was a child, it's probably the singular reason why I've never found horror movies scary, as I used to watch this endlessly
during this period of time, forensics was in it's infancy, and it was actual people like the fictional crane here who pushed for scientific investigation to be accepted. much work done in france. the history of forensics is pretty fascinating, actually.
The Horseman (when headless) was played by actor/stuntman/martial artist Ray Park who played "Darth Maul" in Star Wars Episode 1 and also played "The Toad" in the first X-Men movie.
Aw dude no way!!! That explains a lot - the physical presence of the Horseman was INCREDIBLE - so threatening, graceful yet somehow creating a very oppressing feeling that really amplified the tension in the film! What a talent!
And he also portrayed Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation!!!!😉
48:52 Sisterly love at it's finest.
I watched this way too young as well and wow it scared the shit out of me but I loved it, my mum kinda let me watch whatever tbf I could handle majority of the movies but certain ones would terrify me 😂
Definitely a great Halloween vibe movie and it’s pretty funny too. The church scene is amazing, I think it’s iconic, all of the kills are great. Also the way Christopher Lee says “it is a town called sleepy hollow have you heard of it?” Gives me chills 😂
