Hey guys! Thank you for watching this with us. M. Night did it again! He blew me away with the second half of this film once the pieces were set in place. Phenomenal writing and directing! I think Magnolia should be moved up on your list 😉 If you want to see great performances from an ensemble cast, and amazing directing (his best film in my opinion) from one of the best directors in cinematic history - Paul Thomas Anderson) then It’s definitely worth a watch.
Hallo i Love you reactions. Its real Feelings. I think Prince of Darkness is a Film for you . The Atmosphäre are very Dark and they have Alice Cooper als Actor .
That Brazilian birthday party recording scene gets me every time. The tense and dreadful buildup to the alien reveal works so well. Shyamalan can make great movies when he's passionate enough.
Being Brazilian, I know that that party was supposed to be in Brazil but it clearly looks like some Latin country, the decoration of the house and the model of the car that appears are not seen much here at that time. But it was cool anyway haha
his monologue in front of the tv was shot in one long take - months after joaquin pheonix filmed his side of the conversation. his performance in this movie is insanely impressive.
They started filming the movie the day after 9/11 and that heavy scene with Ray and Graham was the first scene they did while everyone was in a bad mood.
The concept of forgiving someone in the middle of a dangerous crysis is a solid measure of a person. Not sure if I could to be honest, I'd be too busy looking left & right for the ones Ray didn't trap.
When his daughter asks, "There's a monster outside my room, can I have a glass of water?" actually makes a lot of sense in light of the revelation of the alien's weakness being water. In another context, it would seem like the little girl already knew their weakness and was asking for a weapon. Really subtle scriptwriting there
@4thlinemaniac356 You don't think I know that? Goddamn, you must live one shitty and miserable life if you get your self-worth by leaving smart ass replies to people on youtube. I was noting how well the writing of the film accomplished the foreshadowing in a brilliant way, albeit I did not use those words. Go get a life, fool 🤣
I like that it also showed a kind of empathy for people who have lost faith or just don’t have it, and how life situations can play such a big impact on that. If the kid dies at the end, Mel’s character probably never goes back. If a God exists…sometimes people need to be given a reason to believe.
Bo is just so darn cute, I love her. I cracked up when she asked "why can't they get girlfriends? Like in that whole conversation, that was all she heard.
M. Night is like Merrill when it comes to movies. He either strikes out or hits the biggest home runs but hes not afraid to swing away. Signs was a 507 foot home run.
One of my favorite little details about this movie is that the baby monitor only goes off twice, both when the family is all together and supporting each other. The first time on the car they're all connected while trying to make sure the kids are secure. The second time is after Graham's breakdown and they're all embracing.
They're not aliens, they're demons. Do you ever see a ship? He's a former priest, she's an "angel" who has water all around that she blesses. The demon is afraid of the holy water all around the house. At the end, he regains his faith. Remember that Mel is a huge who also did the Passion of Christ movie
50:40 You get it! You got the point! Over and over, I see people complain that the aliens invaded a planet full of water. but that's not the point. This movie isn't about an alien invasion. It's about faith. The boy has asthma. So the poison doesn't get into his lungs. The brother who couldn't stop himself from swinging as hard as he could, so there's a baseball bat readily mounted on the wall, but he's not off with the National League. We've got a girl who cannot finish a glass of water, for reasons that don't make sense to anyone, so there's weapons all over the room. And we have the last words: "Tell Merril to swing away." "See, the question you have to ask yourself is: Do you see coincidences, or miracles?" The father was a Priest, who decided he didn't believe when something terrible happened, but when the 'long shots' added up, he saw a miracle, because it couldn't be a coincidence anymore. M. Night's best movies are ones where every scene, every line, has four layers that build to the final act.
Also the aliens aren't allergic to water. It's the microbes in the water that harms them. Little girl says it right at the beginning of the movie. It's the "amoebas in it". Anybody who's seen any version of War of the Worlds would have understood, because microbes killed those aliens too. It's a really uncharitable interpretation of the film to say that the aliens are allergic to water, especially that human beings are affected by microbes in water as well, but we can still drink, swim and bathe in water. But we also evolved here. Imagine being an alien and having no resistances or defences whatsoever to the microbes in that water. So if anyone's going to make a complaint about the story it's that the aliens didn't have any protection whatsoever from the environment. But at the same time, very very very few UFO accounts in the news ever talk about alien "greys" wearing spacesuits. They're always in the nud. And there's something primal about that that makes them scarier. If they're wearing suits, it would have changed it from a horror to a sci-fi.
Either way an "arguably more advanced race" chose to invade a planet mostly made up of ther weakness.......without weaponry, and ya...........also why does no one mention guns, if Merrell could Damm near destroy one wit a wooden baseball bat, there is no reason military/LEO's......he'll even local civilian farmers/hunters couldn't demolish this species........a very unintimidating invasion force imo🤷♂️
It may not be THE point, but it is an important detail. The story has to be believable and logical (even if the world isn’t) or the writer loses readers. It makes no sense that aliens vulnerable to water would invade a planet that is 70% water when they could invade a desert planet like Mars. Shymalan could have at least added at least a hint that they had to choose this planet because of their need for its average temperature or whatever outweighing their fear of water. Critics will latch onto any perceived flaw.
About the no coincidence line and the supernatural aspect of the daughter; The little girl never drank or threw away her water. She left the water filled cups throughout the house as if she subconsciously knew about the aliens' weakness. That could be coincidence or her having inherited her mother's gift.
Reading your comment I thought, What if the mom had a "gift" similar to the people from Unbreakable or Glass, therefore they´re in the same Universe? Unbreakable is weak to water, just like the aliens. It could be a coincidence or a "kink" from Shyamalan. But it´s very fun to see that in the end the wife has a gift and she died because of a conspiracy or mind manipulation of the driver.
I loved how the characters in Signs are just so believable and act so naturally, I could totally see the sheriff being someone i would know and would know everyone in the town and all the gossip, and the little girl just made the movie for me with some great one liners that was just wow lol
Love all the seemingly random things/coincidences that line up: - The daughter constantly getting new glasses so the house if filled with them - The son having asthma so no poison gas got into his lungs - The final words of the mom It all ties together so well, I love it
I second this. The Village is a masterpiece where so many found it to be a joke. I feel bad for the people missing out. The Village wasn't a horror film; it was a great love story cloaked by the prior successes of M. Night's thrillers with the expectation of it being the same. Sure you have the tension of the "creatures" etc. but The Village is another realm of brilliance. Give it a try and don't go into it wearing "Sixth Sense" glasses.
Crop circles were a HUGE conspiracy thing in the 80s/90s. It’s great seeing younger folks reacting to them without that experience. I’m kind of jealous!
It was more of a 70s thing. By the 80s/90s most people knew about the rope and stick method. Also, the whole UFO thing kinds of died down as a craze after the 70s.
@@Daniel-Strain Coast-to-Coast AM with Art Bell, Unsolved Mysteries, and the X-Files dragged that stuff WAY into the 90s. It wasn't a "craze", exactly, but it was well known and widely discussed.
@@Daniel-Strain I have to disagree. Crop circles and UFOs were big in the 90s. The X-Files and other scifi shows, as well as the conspiracy theory documentaries on History Channel brought them into popular culture even more so. Not many people knew about the tricks that some folks used to create those circles. I remember people discussing crip circles as alien landing pads well into the early 2000s.
Signs is one of my earliest film memories. I'm so glad Ari enjoyed it as much as we did who grew up with this film. It goes without saying that M. Night is a master of his craft. Everything about this film was done perfectly, from the acting to the audio and the camera work to the script. M. Night truly out did himself with Signs. Arguably one of the best films from the 2000s. The ending itself is so epic there are literally no words I can use to describe it and do it justice. I also love how Ari brought up being able to logic things out. The human brain is wired in a way where we by instinct attempt to use logic to explain why things happen. With films like Signs as well as other supernatural films we see this as well...where sometimes we aren't able to explain things in a way that is considered logical.
Absolutely agree with what you. M. Night really demonstrated he had a grip on the kind of story he wanted to tell and executed all of the elements flawlessly. The dialogue is written incredibly well and I love his style when it comes to how he directs. I loved how they gave us two main perspectives throughout as the mystery slowly unfolded. We weren't truly sure of what was real and what was not until further in and that truly had me engaged! Such a fantastic film!
to be a master,. you have to be a lot more consistent. he's far from that. it's up there with his best, no doubt, but way too many crap movies from him (and i'm not even including the last airbender disaster)
@@7thangelz Just because an artist in any field has a piece of art that does poorly that never means that they aren't a master of their craft. Even a failure is a success. It's part of the journey.
The comedy is just so well placed! And I loved how he keeps going back in forth between giving us a moment to breathe, laugh or connect emotionally and then BANG! Some creepy stuff starts happening again. Love it!
It is so well peppered in, not taking away from tense moments, but offering just enough relief to make it better. He suffered a little in later movies because the expectations for twists were so high, but I love how he tells a story.
I was going to mention the funny bits too. They talked about how M Night easily transitioned from horror, to emotional scenes, to jump scares, which is already not an easy thing to pull off, but to also include 'comedic' dialogue and do it all so effortlessly is truly masterful.
I love you two - how you work together and off each other. Your insights are so deep, thought-provoking, and very relevant. You guys are one of my favorite movie reaction channels. Please keep up the amazing work. God bless!❤
@@valeria262 microbes. It's not the water itself. The daughter says it at the very beginning: The water has "amoebas in it". HG Wells War of the Worlds, which had exactly the same plot point. And we and other animals are the same vulnerability to microbes in water, yet we drink, swim, bathe in water. We're almost completely made of water. But we have evolved here, so we have resistances and defences. An alien would have absolutely zero. Sure, the way the film presents the water affecting the aliens looks like a burn, but we don't know what the aliens skin is like. And we don't know what microbes might do to it. Someone who has an allergic reaction to some substance, they might break out in hives within minutes. The way the aliens skin is reacting is the same kind of thing. If anything, you could criticise the movie for having the aliens completely in the nud. Surely they would be wearing some kind of protective gear. But then, no real world reports and survivor accounts of UFO abductions etc. have ever described alien greys as wearing spacesuits. I think that makes them even more terrifying. If the movie had put them in space suits, it would have become a sci-fi rather than a horror.
I remember seeing this movie in the theater...i absolutely loved it. The emotional toll, the story, the line the brother used from his sister as she died, it all cane together beautifully. I wish M.Night would get back to his roots and make more movies like this again.
One of my favorites. Loved the message. Bo didn’t like water and it was all over for a reason, Morgan had asthma so no poison got in his lungs and Merrill could swing away. It was well done. Loved the subtle humor too. Good one you two. 🥰😍
this was SOOOO fun in the theatre. Just an incredible movie going experience...not matter your thoughts on the actual film and ending. I've recently now shown this to my kids and they all loved it. A great film overall. And yes you must watch Unbreakable...his best movie.
It is such a rollercoaster! The mystery element made this such a fun and tense watch. The family drama combined with some elements of horror really did it for me 😄 Unbreakable is on our list! We both haven’t watched that one!
@@OfficialMediaKnights Lady in the Water is a sleeper as well, but it's less horror and more fairy tale, so people hated it when it came out... I think you all would appreciate it though!
This was an amazing theater experience. Definitely one of the best for me as a now 40yo. Saw it in Georgetown with my then college girlfriend who jumped like crazy while the theater screamed lol
The fact that Bo had that as Morgan said “Like a tick but with water” because it would help defeat the alien, Morgan had asthma so he wouldn’t get poisoned, Merrill kept the bat as a future weapon and the wife died so she could tell them in advance 😢
I kinda feel like M. Night Shyamalan "swings away" hard with the movies he does. Sometimes he misses...but when he connects, it's HUGE!! Hollywood doesn't really swing away anymore. They just toss some chicken feed, hope enough birds show up to make it worthwhile for the shareholders, and then congratulate themselves.
You just described Disney of the last 10 years. Yeahm sometimes Shyamalan miss like The Happening (movie that I love but people didn´t like it) but still tried to put his soul into the project to the point that every single movie he made has his personal "footprint". Something that can only be said of only a few directors.
When I first saw this I thought the Sheriff had the hots for Mel Gibson... Then the second time I saw it I realize she's caring for the whole family... because she was there when they lost their wife/mother.
M. Night is one of my favorites. He has had a few misses, but when he hits, it's incredible. Big fan of Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village, Unbreakable, Glass, Split and a few others that are pretty good.
Denise constantly looking up and smirking at the camera right before the birthday party scene had me dying 😆That's exactly how I feel when I have a friend watch one of my favorite movies
Great film! I'm surprised you guys didn't reflect on the little girl purposely leaving lots of glasses of water around the house, which later is revealed to be the weapon against the aliens. So good!
Denises side-eyes crack me up every time! I must say I enjoy waching you both seeing a movie for a first time, but following Denise anticipating scares and plot reveals is a whole other kind of entertaining!
SIGNS (2002) , THE SIXTH SENSE (1999) and THE OTHERS (2001) They are definitely the best movies of the genre at that time. Thank u so much for your reaction!!
LOVE that you guys are enjoying MS - I feel compelled to ask you guys to do Lady in the Water, but whatever you do, you have GOT to include what I consider his best picture (or 1A with Sixth Sense) and that's the Village. Truly phenomenal cast, one of the most beautiful scores ever written and a truly amazing love story masquerading as a horror movie.
M Night Shyamalan lives in Pennsylvania. He likes being close to his family and coming home each day when he's working. For this reason, all his films are shot in Pennsylvania. My understanding is that the first day of shooting for this film was 9/11. NYC is basically in Pennsylvania's front yard, plus one of the hijacked planes was brought down by those on board, crash landing in a field in Pennsylvania. This event cast a shadow over the filming that lasted well after the memorial service held that morning after learning of the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. The day Shyamalan shot the scene of Ray escaping in the car, Shyamalan's beloved grandfather, had very recently passed away. The loss sat heavy on him and influenced his acting in the scene. Yes, Bo was special; she was psychic, having impressions and prophetic dreams. But the mother was also psychic; she recognized this in her daughter and had dreamed of what her son would look like.
The wife also told him to tell the daughter to SEE, SEE. She’s precognitive. I’m not sure he ever realizes this till the end but her mother and brother did. And the brother was just believed, was intensely curious , and whip smart. And was a protector.
I love that bit when Mel is talking to the alien in the pantry. One of my favorite movie things is when great actors have to act like bad actors. If you two haven't watched The Village yet, add that to your M. Night list. It wasn't a huge commercial hit, but it's a beautiful film with great performances. And keep up the great work - I love your channel and your content! You two have the best energy.
I love that they showed how out of touch Graham was by having the "cop" he was pretending to be, be some noir detective from some 30s or 40s crime film.
I feel like Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village was an incredible string of movies for M Night, despite a few silly parts in the last two. The Happening, not so much. But I think Split and Glass were good too.
I wouldn’t call it silly. Like signs for instance. Those things are only silly if you are expecting it to be this big scifi alien movie. Thats not what this movie is. Its more about the signs we were seeing throughout the entire movie than it was about the aliens. I did also enjoy the village too but nowhere near as much as I enjoyed signs. Signs is probably my favorite film from the bunch. It peft a huge impact on me psychologically growing up lol
I actually loved the happening. Lol. The happening and signs are my favorites in the sense that I can watch them over and over again. The others are great, but I don’t get the urge to rewatch them.
Such a fantastic movie!! I saw this back in the day with my grandpa and I've rewatched it more than a dozen times since! It's a great rewatch - you pick up on new things each watch! This is M Night's best, imo! None of his other work has hit as hard as this one. It's always been my theory that both the mom and daughter are clairvoyant. Bo had her moments too... like voting to go to the lake and all of her many cups of water everywhere.
Incredible movie. I know The Sixth Sense is considered his masterpiece, but I’d argue that Signs is. Loved watching this again with you guys!! Your reactions to One Piece made me a fan and a sub!
Ah man, these days all I look forward to is a reaction from you both. I watch a lot of reaction channels but I must admit you both are just a cut above the rest. You thoroughly enjoy each movie for what it brings to the table, you feed off each other's excellent energy, and the synergy and chemistry between the two of you is just chef's kiss. Love the insights you provide at the end of each reaction as well. ❤❤
I've always loved the symmetry of Graham and Morgan in this movie! They're both very serious people and grieving in similar ways. When Morgan says during dinner, "I hate you, you let Mom die," later, Graham says to God, "I hate you." And then, while Morgan is struggling to breathe, Graham says to him, "We're the same. We're the same." ❤
38:30. I haven't seen this strategy in films often, but the zooming into the wall as they listen to the sound of their dogs is awesome. Something you would laser focus on in real life.
I love watching your reactions because you both feel so genuine. Thanks for everything you share! I'm a huge M. Night fan and Signs is one of the better movies of his. That being said, my number one favorite is Unbreakable, and IMO, it's his absolute best movie, but it is very unrecognized and underappreciated. I really really would love to see your reactions to it ❤
Thank you so much for the massive compliment! It means the world to both of us! Signs was such a fantastic choice. It started strong and ended the same way. It had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. Unbreakable is on our list and that's a movie we both haven't watched and have heard very good things about. Can't wait to check it out 😄
@jw3185 Been hearing nothing but great things about Unbreakable. We really enjoyed the films we’ve watched so seeing people calling it the best one he’s made is truly exciting 😄
This film (in my opinion) is a perfect film. You both are incredible with your reactions and analysis. Such a great channel. Such a great work of art. Media Knights + Signs. Match made in heaven for me. Love you both and I truly wish you all the best. Massive love and thank you from across the pond (UK) 😊 You always brighten my day x
Gotta admit I use to just skim by your reactions but after watching you guys in depth you are brilliant with the assessment of films! Keep up the great work! ❤
well another plausible explanation for "swing away" is because merl was a famous ball player who not only had hit records he also has the record for the most strike outs. When talking about it at the store he says "it felt wrong not to swing" so it terms of the "fate vs coincidence" theme, she COULD have been saying "swing away" in the sense of "don't be ashamed for your strike outs, keep swinging"
This is My favorite shyamalan movie. Such a beautiful told story. I adore every single Main character and the actor's interpretations of them. (Bo is the cutest thing ever comer on!) The score, oh My god the score. I was 23 when i saw it in the theater and to this day, THAT jumpscare in the Brasil footage gives me goosebumps...
I love that he got lost in this and didn't let logic ruin it. A lot of people ask how an interstellar alien species couldn't tell there was poison on our planet, water, until we started fighting them with super soakers.
This argument has never made any sense to me. If your planet is low on a necessary resource (food supply or specific minerals, perhaps), then it makes sense to travel to a place that has some dangers in order to get what you need. You just do your best to protect yourself and take the risk. Heck, humans have gone into space just for exploration purposes, a non-necessity, even though they would die in a few minutes without oxygen equipment.
I think the jump scares are real profound in the film because as you guys said we had been peaking tension but then deescalating back down into emotion and fantastic dialogue, breaking the rythm to then pop a jump scare in there was masterful.
The thing that made him lose his faith is the very thing that brought it back. I was about 11/12 when this came out and I've always loved it. Such a beautiful story. The score is great too...
@@BattlestarDamoclesit's okay if you aren't a person of Faith but that's the reason why M Night Shyamalan wrote this LOL. The main plot of the film is Graham Hess finding his faith again in God because of all these signs and miracles, hence the name of the film . Aliens are subplot to get Graham to see all the things that God has done for him and to get him to recognize the signs and miracles
Apparently M Night wanted to make the creatures demons, but the producers asked him to change them to aliens because they were easier to market. It would of made more sense, the girl with her 'holy' water and Mel Gibson being a Reverend for example. He also wanted the film to have absolutely no music, but obviously changed his mind.
@JollyJeff Pantora is full of carbon dioxide and without oxygen masks (or Avatar bodies), Humans would die within minutes. Didn't stop them from going to the planet and try to take it over.
@@JollyJeff I've heard that argument/complaint repeatedly, and it has always bothered me and I wasn't sure why--until just tonight. I realized that its basically standard fare in SF for human explorers (or workers/soldiers/colonists/whatever job) to go to highly toxic, hostile environments because [insert macguffin reason here]. A generally breathable atmosphere with large ground bodies and only occasional, limited (and somewhat predictable) atmospheric forms of a toxin? Relatively speaking, that's a friendly environment in the grand scheme of possible planetary environments. So the "stupid aliens" thing would apply even moreso to all us dumb humans in fiction going into even worse environments--but nobody tends to make that complaint. And there is talk of trying to colonize both the Moon and Mars (and pipe dreams of terraforming mars and venus, plus maybe a moon of jupiter or two), not just in fiction but eventually in reality. All much more hostile environments than Earth is for the aliens in this. Why they wouldn't be wearing protective gear or some kind would be a more legitimate question, honestly. But coming to our planet? Nah, we'd go to worse.
The movie is about priest’s resurgence of belief. The aliens are demons, the girl is an angel who blesses the water by sipping a little bit from each glass. They get destroyed by holy water. Remember when father said when she was before ladies called her “an Angel” and she smiled at him.
I've now watched a handful of your guys' reactions/reviews and I have to say, I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this channel. From Everything Everywhere All At Once to this, I'm glad to have found some viewers that understand films to this degree and can appreciate the art found in it. I've been watching reactions for some time now, and this is the first time I've found people so willing to witness this specific film's shining attributes. Thank you.

As someone who watched movies almost every day for the past 20 years, i can wholeheartedly say that this movie is in my top 3, and that list goes on forever
Only recently discovered this channel. It has been a joy seeing the reactions to all of these great movies. Signs is one of those rare films that is very honest and encourages discussion about what we believe. And Unbreakable is definitely a must.
You had me at James Newton Howard. Because honestly, his best scores are with M. Night Shyamalan. Even his movies that people think aren't the best, like Lady in the Water and The Happening. He just came out with an album called Night after Night, where he recreates his scores for M Nights movies. So good
I love seeing reactors watching one of my favorite movies. My first sci-fi movie, childhood memories, watching this with my older brother and dad.❤ This is one hidden treasure 😉
M. Night Shyamalan is the most wrongfully criticized and under-appreciated director. He is brave and creative and doesn't follow templates/recipes. That alone with worth respecting. on top of that, he makes masterpiece works of storytelling and atmosphere. Check out Lady in the Water - a seriously underrated and misunderstood film. It's a modern day classic fantasy adventure (Tolkien to comic adventure/anime adventure and all in between), using a modern setting and modern characters/professions/lifestyles but as if each was destined to greatness despite their ordinary nature. A modern folk tale story with an adventure troup collected from a modern urban setting. Very creative and atmospheric.
Guys! Thank you for watching this movie with us. I loved every reaction. I laughed a lot when Denise hinted with a little smile because she knew what was coming. I watched this a long time ago in a movie theater with lots of speakers around me. I was scared like never before. An unforgettable memory for me.
That part where you asked, "What did he see?" In the original script, Mel's character was supposed to see numerous lines being formed in the crops. Telling him that the aliens were coming to his house.
That confrontation/reveal scene gives me chills every time I watch it. Like you said, the music is incredible. I actually found the music for that whole confrontation and it's in rotation in my playlist. This movie is criminally underrated: I think the cast does an incredible job.
This might be my favorite Joaquin Phoenix performance ever. :-). So glad to revisit this with you guys! (And Denise's sly little sidelooks to the camera)
I attended a James Newton Howard concert in Berlin in 2017, and during that wonderful evening he said to us in the audience that his collaborations with M. Night have been among his most treasured works. I can easily understand why. Yet another reason for me to love you guys - I'm a huge JNH fan. 🤩
Whaaaat???? That must have been such an amazing experience, we wanna do the same when we get a chance! We're both HUGE James Newton Howard fans, so glad we all got that in common! His work with M Night is just so haunting and deeply beautiful!
@@OfficialMediaKnights , 1000 %. I'm a huge film music fan and a sound designer by trade so I passionately love M. Night's films, even the weaker ones! He's so on top of how his movies sound.
2 details I Iove about this movie: the baby monitor works when they're all touching and the silence in the cornfields. If you've ever been to a farm you'll notice the insects are LOUD and their sounds are always present. When graham walks in the field at night there's no sound of anything because of the alien
Haven't seen this in a loooonnnng time, but an advanced race capable of traveling across the universe decides to invade a planet whose primary resource is the one thing that kills them? Its like a really st00pid war of the world's concept

I love the power couple. JP is young but he was just finished Gladiator and show us the share amount of talent he has. Then there is Gibson a veteran actor and they workl so well toghether. ALso remember when I said that Gibson got acting job years later after the Lethal Weapon 1, bc of that opening scene with going trough the suicide toughs? M.Night S. said later that when he got in business in Hollywood, he said after watching trhe scene, "I want to work with this actor". Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable is the directors holy trinity imo. FYI I love Marvel and Batman and so on, but my really favorite superhero movie is Unbreakable. Show power without show off or even show us basically nothing and still feel the power in Bruce was a joy and love to watch :)
Merrill Hess's baseball career is likey a reference to Babe Ruth. Ruth famously held records for most career home runs and most single season home runs; however, at the time of his retitement the Babe had the most strike-outs of any non-pitcher in the league.
One of my favorite little details from this movie is when Meryll is in the recruitment office and says "it felt wrong not to swing." It's because he was always meant to save them all by beating the shit out of that alien.
I LOVED choreographing a winter guard show to this music. I heard it before I saw the movie and there were instant show designs, movement, equipment, everything your imagination could want to built a complete show. It’s the best part of this film. Those three notes almost ranks up there with the two notes of “Jaws” or the five notes of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.
46:50 ... His wife is saying "And tell Graham to see..." But those are not her words, they are God's words. Graham is right there, she could have just said "You need to see."
I was fortunate enough to see this in theaters. Only time in my life where I jumped out of my seat. I still get goosebumps at the birthday party scene!
I liked this one detail. Towards the beginning when the dogs are acting strange, Graham says he is going to call Dr. Crawford. Then Morgan says kind of confused "he doesn't treat animals" but Graham just says he'll know what to do. Later we see when Graham goes to Ray Reddy's house that Ray is the local vet. Just another little detail. There are so many in M. night films.
Yay! Thank you for reacting to this🤍 I watched this when I was 8 and was so scared, because the aliens can blend in with their surroundings I couldn't sleep properly for weeks 😅 but watching it now I'm older, I understand the deeper meanings. I loved how everything all came to make sense at the end. Like how Bo had her problems with the water, which led for there to be so many glasses scattered around the house and that ended up being a weakness of the aliens. Just a great film. You both give such great reactions, thank you again :)
This was such a sweet comment, thank you so so much! Honestly agreed, I remember this movie creeping me the hell out! Especially the moment where you see the alien in the reflection of the TV, ad a kid that s**t changed my (Denise) view of any TV that's off 😂
This movie, probably seen it by now more than 50 times and again I’ve spotted something for the very first time. Nights movies are so multi layered and detailed, also this movie was for me together with The Sixth Sense one big revelation that there is more out there. I’m Night forever greatful for bringing this heartfelt and supernatural stories that humanity just need. It was a joy again to watch it together with you. Keep his movies coming you guys, lots of underrated gems out there!
‘Fun fact’, the car scene where Graham is going to say goodbye to his wife, was one of the very first scenes they’ve actually filmed on 12th of September 2001. The day after 9/11. 🙏🏼
I love that the "Aliens" have more in kin to Demons than they do Aliens. Bo's alluded to being an Angel, and therefore she's blessing all the water that she's drank from and that's why it really hurt the Aliens and it's alluded to the solution isn't just "water" because why not just say that on the TV? Like you mentioned about the other "Signs" that have happened. Also crop circles can be made by two people with a plank of wood and rope, hilariously. It's extremely easy to make them funnily enough.
Another excellent reaction. Elegant jumps cares are so rare, but this movie excels in them. Love both your appreciation for the media and your attention to details. Keep it up!
I still remember this movie. I was 12 years old in Iran. Iranian TV barely shows any American movies because of the Islamic regime. I came from school, and this movie was on TV. Once I watched it, I was obsessed with it. Everything about this movie seemed believable to me at the time. Great performances by Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I remember when I (Denise) first watched it, it stayed with me for weeks after! And to this day, it's one of my all time favorites!
I don't care what anyone says, this movie is amazing! It's subtle, the score is amazing, the family dynamic is amazing and touches on some serious issues, the visual effects were great for their time, and it has such a great ending!! The fact that the aliens are weak to water doesn't mean they're stupid. It very well could have been that they came from a world that didn't have water or they didn't know what it would do to them. They may have also been incredibly desperate and chose to come regardless of the risks. People don't think things through anymore. Also, they started filming this movie with the flashback scene between Graham and his wife on September 11, 2001. Talk about a tough day at work.
Hey guys! Thank you for watching this with us. M. Night did it again! He blew me away with the second half of this film once the pieces were set in place. Phenomenal writing and directing!

That Brazilian birthday party recording scene gets me every time. The tense and dreadful buildup to the alien reveal works so well. Shyamalan can make great movies when he's passionate enough.
Ohhh that scene was INCREDIBLE!! Shyamalan has an amazing talent with tension and no matter what, I (Denise) will always be a fan!
Being Brazilian, I know that that party was supposed to be in Brazil but it clearly looks like some Latin country, the decoration of the house and the model of the car that appears are not seen much here at that time. But it was cool anyway haha
I get chills every time with the bday party video
@@leetat.t8093but their portuguese was on point
@@leetat.t8093 I'm brazilian too and disagree. The whole thing looked alot like Brazil in mid 90/2000.
Mel Gibson’s acting!! When Ray is apologizing for for the accident, Mel, without saying a word, conveys so much anguish.
The dinner scene is incredible.
his monologue in front of the tv was shot in one long take - months after joaquin pheonix filmed his side of the conversation. his performance in this movie is insanely impressive.
They started filming the movie the day after 9/11 and that heavy scene with Ray and Graham was the first scene they did while everyone was in a bad mood.
Yes! Makes me cry every time.
Really subtle scriptwriting there
It's called Foreshadowing
@4thlinemaniac356 You don't think I know that? Goddamn, you must live one shitty and miserable life if you get your self-worth by leaving smart ass replies to people on youtube. I was noting how well the writing of the film accomplished the foreshadowing in a brilliant way, albeit I did not use those words. Go get a life, fool 🤣
Kids in movies are the best at foreshadowing
Whooooaaa! Never caught this!!❤
@@4thlinemaniac356 Boshadowing
This is a story about grief and loss of faith presented as a classic alien invasion story. I really like this film, one of M. Night's best.
The tv scare with the party has stayed with me since I saw it 23 years ago. One of the most genuine creepy scares that gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME.
M. Night is like Merrill when it comes to movies. He either strikes out or hits the biggest home runs but hes not afraid to swing away. Signs was a 507 foot home run.
Best analogy! 🎯
I honestly far more respect directors like Shyamalan or Robert Zemeckis who swing away and sometimes miss than those who play it safe
@@michaelinlofi Yeah I definitely agree with that too. It’s better to take a risk.
One of my favorite little details about this movie is that the baby monitor only goes off twice, both when the family is all together and supporting each other. The first time on the car they're all connected while trying to make sure the kids are secure. The second time is after Graham's breakdown and they're all embracing.
A very unique take on the alien invasion genre. We see it through the perspective of an isolated family.
And we have the last words: "Tell Merril to swing away."
"See, the question you have to ask yourself is: Do you see coincidences, or miracles?"
The father was a Priest, who decided he didn't believe when something terrible happened, but when the 'long shots' added up, he saw a miracle, because it couldn't be a coincidence anymore.
It may not be "the point", but it is still "a point" and cannot simply be dismissed.
@@trappervz9478 s-u-s-p-e-n-s-i-o-n-o-f-d-i-s-b-e-l-i-e-f. It's a MOVIE!!!!!
Love all the seemingly random things/coincidences that line up:
- The daughter constantly getting new glasses so the house if filled with them
- The son having asthma so no poison gas got into his lungs
- The final words of the mom
It all ties together so well, I love it
Falling asleep at just that moment on the road.

This was a great reaction. Shyamalan is a true artist. I recommend The Village. I love it. It's M. Night in his prime.
"Shyamalan is sometimes a true artist"... Fixed for you, thank me later :D
@Actkqk3 artists take chances. Even if it doesn't "hit" it doesn't mean he's not an artist.
@@christinajohnson6026 Not everything with a twist at the end is art...
@@Daniel-Strain I guess so. I was a Pentecostal kid-we kind of got all our news 10-20 years late. 😅
Yes, but when you see that one field with the brown crop, do you see the Led Zeppelin box set? 😂
Signs is one of my favorites for sure. Criminally underrated and overlooked in my opinion. Thanks for the reaction post!
28:25 Someone needs to do a compilation of every time Ari does that scream. It really cracks me up. Denise too I've noticed. 😂
"They're in full 480P glory..." That was priceless...
I want that on a t-shirt.
PS: It is an honor to be the first producer Knight! :)
The honor is ours! Thank you for the incredible amount of support ❤️
to be a master,. you have to be a lot more consistent. he's far from that. it's up there with his best, no doubt, but way too many crap movies from him (and i'm not even including the last airbender disaster)
@@7thangelz Just because an artist in any field has a piece of art that does poorly that never means that they aren't a master of their craft. Even a failure is a success. It's part of the journey.
My humble opinion, this is a terribly underrated movie. This is a great work!!!
I love the movie's occasionally funny moments like "I'm insane with anger!" or "Then it's 37, it's 75" lol 😂
The comedy is just so well placed! And I loved how he keeps going back in forth between giving us a moment to breathe, laugh or connect emotionally and then BANG! Some creepy stuff starts happening again. Love it!
“I’m insane with anger!” makes me cackle every time😂
It is so well peppered in, not taking away from tense moments, but offering just enough relief to make it better. He suffered a little in later movies because the expectations for twists were so high, but I love how he tells a story.
"why can't they get girlfriends?"
God bless!❤

The fact Bo was so picky with the water all the time leading to glasses of water standing around everywhere...
The fact the aliens invaded a volatile acid world....
Denise reaction to this was pretty funny ....she kept moving her eyes when she knew something big was going to happen & that Ari would react to.
I think I’ve watched this video about 30 times and Denise’s mischievous side eye glances towards the camera never fail to crack me up.

Lol oh man. I couldn't stop laughing seeing Denise set up Ari and keep glancing at the camera knowing what's coming lol
Spot on!!
bullseye
You just described Disney of the last 10 years.
Yeahm sometimes Shyamalan miss like The Happening (movie that I love but people didn´t like it) but still tried to put his soul into the project to the point that every single movie he made has his personal "footprint". Something that can only be said of only a few directors.
When I first saw this I thought the Sheriff had the hots for Mel Gibson...
Then the second time I saw it I realize she's caring for the whole family... because she was there when they lost their wife/mother.
Yeah I love her as a character
M. Night is one of my favorites. He has had a few misses, but when he hits, it's incredible. Big fan of Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village, Unbreakable, Glass, Split and a few others that are pretty good.
You can tell how much he loves Spielberg. His films are basically love letters to him. He's one of the best at that style of movie storytelling.
Lady in the water is a very underrated movie of his.
So good!
👍
She also asks Says There's a alien in my room can I have a glass of water? Foreshadowing.
The same 'weapon' that makes up alot of the planet's air? That water? The aliens should have died as soon as they stepped off their spaceship.
I love that they showed how out of touch Graham was by having the "cop" he was pretending to be, be some noir detective from some 30s or 40s crime film.
mel gibsons acting can tear you up in seconds. amazing actor
I feel like Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village was an incredible string of movies for M Night, despite a few silly parts in the last two. The Happening, not so much. But I think Split and Glass were good too.
Totally agree whith you, friend!
I actually was so disappointed with The Happening. I mean, wth happened there?

We're the same." ❤

well another plausible explanation for "swing away" is because merl was a famous ball player who not only had hit records he also has the record for the most strike outs.
It's just like The Wizard of Oz. Like, what kind of witch is water soluble? And if it was that easy, why had no one killed her before?
This argument has never made any sense to me. If your planet is low on a necessary resource (food supply or specific minerals, perhaps), then it makes sense to travel to a place that has some dangers in order to get what you need. You just do your best to protect yourself and take the risk. Heck, humans have gone into space just for exploration purposes, a non-necessity, even though they would die in a few minutes without oxygen equipment.
Honestly that Alien reveal scared the ever loving safe space faculities of my entire being lol
Love Denise's reactions when she knows something is gonna happen and she barely gives you glimpses to see your reaction 😂😂
This movie isn't about aliens. It's about a man regaining his faith.
So true! It's handled so well honestly, and the performances were just stunning!
And it's about aliens.
@@BattlestarDamoclesthe aliens are the macguffin so to speak
It's a movie that just happens to have aliens in it.
Denise’s facial expressions throughout this reaction literally made me laugh out out every time lol…ohhh if only Ari knew what was coming huh?
Apparently M Night wanted to make the creatures demons, but the producers asked him to change them to aliens because they were easier to market. It would of made more sense, the girl with her 'holy' water and Mel Gibson being a Reverend for example. He also wanted the film to have absolutely no music, but obviously changed his mind.
I would understand, but once you hear the opening and the notes, you can't not put them in.
This is also a fan theory since it would be pretty stupid aliens who come to a planet where 70% of it was covered in a liquid that was toxic to them.
Some religious people say aliens are actually demons.
I'm not a "reaction channel" kinda guy, but I really enjoy re-watching all those movies with you guys, just to feel that "first time watching" again.
Thank you.
You guys are quickly becoming my favorite reaction channel…you guys are genuine and def get in depth with the reviews with great explanation….keep up the good work
As someone who watched movies almost every day for the past 20 years, i can wholeheartedly say that this movie is in my top 3, and that list goes on forever
Only recently discovered this channel. It has been a joy seeing the reactions to all of these great movies. Signs is one of those rare films that is very honest and encourages discussion about what we believe. And Unbreakable is definitely a must.
We love movies that allow the viewer to start a meaningful discussion! Thank you for watching our reactions ❤️ it truly means a lot to us
The dinner scene was masterful in every way and never fails to get me. You feel Mel's pain and anguish
Bo, leaving water all over the house, the son having asthma keeping his lungs safe, the uncle being a baseball hitter...so many details!
The Village, Unbreakable, Split, and Glass should definitely go on your M. Night Shyamalan list!
Very creative and atmospheric.
my friend sold the movie to me as a "live action jrpg" and it really is. lol
The symbol of demon injured by water, baptism/ablution. So many symbols used. M. Knight is incredible.
Ahhh, I’ve been ITCHING for you guys to watch Signs 🙌🏻 this is in my top 10 favourites 🫶🏻
We hope you enjoy! It was a blast!
Such a fantastic score composed and conducted by James Newton Howard.
2 details I Iove about this movie: the baby monitor works when they're all touching and the silence in the cornfields. If you've ever been to a farm you'll notice the insects are LOUD and their sounds are always present. When graham walks in the field at night there's no sound of anything because of the alien
Yay! I absolutely adore this movie. Always gets me😢
It has everything! Some emotional moments, great scares and even comedy!

I'm an athiest and I love this movie! My favorite "non-coincidence" is Bo's water thing.
One of my favorite movies of all time (and I've seen more than 2,300).
I was fortunate enough to see this in theaters. Only time in my life where I jumped out of my seat. I still get goosebumps at the birthday party scene!
@Mauro Biglino & The 5Th Kind channels @ Clif high Year of the Dragon video for a summary.
