This is probably the first major action film with a female lead. This is how you do a "strong female character" in a movie. She's not a ninja, she doesn't throw soldiers to the ground and break their necks. Her character is just one person without training, but with an iron will and the heart of a lion. And the scene with the lost daughter makes her motivation clear, adding to the credibility. I don't know if this movie is better than Alien, but it's definitely a masterpiece in its own right.
100% agree, between her and Linda Hamilton, this is how you build a female lead with credibility. I wish modern writers would go back and actually learn how to do it.
@@TheKurgain FR
No, she isn't Mary Poppins, whom possesses all those traits, but in a different story, in a different time. We 'are' defining strong female characters - yes?
As a little girl in the 80s, I used to call this movie "Mama with the big guns". ❤ I was about 8 years old when it came on HBO, recorded on VCR.
REST IN PEACE BILL PAXTON "GAME OVER"
@@terrylandess6072 Mary Poppins isn't the main/lead character, even in her movie's the main cast are the kids not her
Hudson is such a beloved character. Literally all his lines became instant classics.
Great aspect of the movie is that the 3 most annoying characters, Gorman Hudson and Burke, all have satisfying arcs. One a very deserved cowardly end to his life and the other two with heroic redemption.
Nothing beats Sgt Apone waking up from cryosleep and his first action is popping his cigar in his mouth.
The actor who played Sgt ( actually a SFC-Sgt First Class ) Apone had served in Vietnam and he and the cast went through a mini-boot camp.Learning how to march, handle weapons,etc,etc,..there's a-LONG-documentary on the making of ALIENS on youtube-WATCH it if you-DARE. LOL.
@@user-be7tc2bd6e Cheers I'll check for that. Always happy to look deeper into a great movie.
Veteran actor Paul Reiser played Burke.
I’ve heard that the character of Burke was so sleazy that Paul Reiser mom cheered at the premiere when he got it.
Now that's hilarious
Reiser.
@@OneVoiceMore Thanks
I love that the characters weren't dumb. Once they saw what the threat was, the plan is to nuke to place. The problems came from them being stranded.
Burke was kinda dumb. And that's what I like about him as a villain. He's not some calculating evil genius, he is, to quote Futurama "A monkey of medium intelligence who wears a suit."
Finally a reaction praising Bill Paxton’s character! Most other reactors sit on his lines and don’t even laugh. It blows my mind! When this was in the theaters, all his parts landed as intended with the audiences back then. So thank you for having a sense of humor!
Great reaction to a great film.
I'm starting to realize I need to watch more reactions from people whom grew up closer to the time I did and share the same cultural outlook.
The lines have been quoted and meme'ed so many times, they've lost a certain amount of punch.
When I first saw Aliens back in 86 in a theater, on the scene just after Ripley closes the airlock and faces the camera, most of the audience literally stood and applauded.
It was very cool to see everyone totally into the movie.
Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens, Alien, Titanic, Twister, Abyss, Avitar, Alita.
Cameron loves his Ts and As.
True lies! lol
@@BertonMelch Lol, I forgot that one. Thanks!
T & A's all the way.
47:56 man the audience back in 1986 went wild when Ripley said that. We were whooping and clapping.
Mom vs mom death match.
I saw it again in 2015 at a cinema and the whole crowd yelled out the line and whooped and cheered. It was amazing.
And that's what make that scene amazing.
I hope Cameron releases his masterful Special Edition in 2026. I want to see audiences react to that iconic line
“Come on!… COME ON!!!”
That part always gives me chills.
I love how there is no music needed to make this scene so tense and exciting
Paxton saying Game over was not in the script, he improved it on the spot.
This is by far my favorite movie. I watch this movie over and over and over again. The actions, the dialogue, and the pacing are tight. There isn’t a single scene that is fluff or doesn’t have a purpose. The editing is superb. Well done gents.
Ripley and the Marines in this cast are so beloved as sci-fi icons that the showrunners of the tv show The Expanse put them in an Easter Egg.
During Season Six of the show at the start of a climactic battle, the camera pauses on mission status board. The names and vitals for Ripley, Hicks, Vasquez, Hudson etc are shown.
As an old head nerd I just had to smile and say “There are in the company of badasses. How can they fail?”
There should be an allowance on RUclips that if you're reviewing an R-rated movie you can use R-rated language.
This is as good as Alien, but in a different way. It made Bill Paxton a legend too.
That part 👆🏾
Alien was a haunted house in-SPACE-Aliens is more aliens and more action. GAME over man GAME over. LOL.
ya what's the point of youtube kids if regular youtube censers everything but there adds and if it's "gore" you can still find it in the "kids" section of youtube like how to taxidermy a mouse
As I’ve said before…
Saw this in the theater at 14.
Packed house.
The atmosphere in that theater can never be topped.
When the door lifts up and she delivers that iconic line, the entire crowd went berserk.
Cheering, cursing, pumping fists in the air…was just incredible.
Will never forget it.
Great reaction 😊 👍🏼
I was also in a packed-house theater to see this, but I was only 8.
Same thing with the ending scene, but the entire theater erupted in laughter when Ripley told Burke "They can bill me".
All I wanted to do after seeing it was to be a Colonial Marine like Hicks. Ended up an infantryman in the 101st in Iraq.
Same--I was 15, in the balcony at the Indian Hills theater in Omaha. The atmosphere was like a football game. That line about "a cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska" absolutely slayed.
Damn...I was 5 years old when this movie came out. The first time I watched it I was about 8 years old with my older sisters & my parents. Then I remembered I begged my mom that I wanted to watch "Momma with the Big Guns" movie again. Best days of my childhood !😂
@@tracyleesmith781 Loving “Momma with the Big Guns.” 10/10, no notes.
@DoktorStrangelove
Lol thanks! When I told my mom that, she was hesitant, but she let me watch it. We had it recorded to VCR from HBO. BIG THX TO MY FAMILY!
33:13 Gorman wasn’t a bad man. He was inexperienced because he is a lieutenant a low level commissioned officer. Burke and the company probably picked someone like him so he could be controlled.
Had Sergeant Apone lived he would have been there to properly advise Gorman. But he was humble enough to let Hicks run the squad after he woke up.
In the end Gorman went out like a Marine. He died trying to save a fellow Marine who was down. He couldn’t save Vasquez but he made sure she didn’t go out alone.
He had a great redemption arc. I thought he would have been bad the whole way through.
Another thing is the Marines command didn't take the alien threat seriously,by only sending 2 quads of Marines to combat them.Of course they had no info on their foe at all tho. And when Ripley was briefing the Marines, they were joking about another-BUG-hunt,not taking their mission seriously. That's when Sgt Apone put the-HAMMER-down on them tho. A good trait of a GOOD NCO.The actor playing Sgt Apone had served in Vietnam and got a little anzy when guys had their fingers on the triggers of their prop guns. The actors even went thru a mini boot camp, marching in formation, training on how to handle their prop guns,etc,etc,..
@@user-be7tc2bd6e The Corporation was involved in the rescue and they wanted the mission to fail.
@@andreabindolini7452 So true, that's why Burke wanted to keep those face huggers alive, then tried to have those same face huggers impregnate Newt and Ripley. When the Marines found out his plan they wanted to-FRAG-him,but,Ripley wanted Burke to face punishment for his actions, thus, wanted Burke alive.
they probably wanted to cut costs so they hired someone "cheap" and told them they would get experience on the job
Great reaction! Couple fun facts, Bill Paxton was constantly apologizing to Carrie Henn (Newt) on set due to swearing so much in front of her. When the cast was undergoing training to play the Colonial Marines (Al Matthews (Apone) was a Marine in Vietnam and it showed in his great performance), Sigourney wasn't able to be there for it, making the "waking up" scene even more convincing where Ripley was the outsider surrounded by comrades in arms who had been through it together. Sigourney was grossly underpaid in Alien, so she pushed hard to get paid what she was worth for this movie, and eventually succeeded. Carrie Henn didn't continue with an acting career and instead became a school teacher, though in 2022 she returned to the film industry.
I’ve seen this movie a hundred times and this was the most I’ve ever laughed watching it with you fellas! Love it 😂
THIS MADE MY DAY!!!! I HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED YET AND I CAN'T STOP SMILING!
Thank you, my brothers! Let's Go!!!
Happy to deliver. This one was fun.
I’ve watched this many times, and each time I appreciate Bill Paxton’s performance even more…
I loved how amused you guys were by Hudson.
Amazing coincidence: "Rambolina" was the name Sigourney Weaver used in interviews to describe who Ripley becomes by the end of the movie. Nice work, Rekkai 😎👍
I’ve watched this countless times but this time I was cracking up half the time. “Did it just skeet one out?” 🤣🤣🤣
This is a Director's Cut of Aliens. The two main changes are the scene where Newt's family find the downed ship from Alien. In the theatrical release you don't see the colony until Ripley and the marines arrive. This was supposed to ramp up suspense so you only get to see planet LV-426 from the main character perspective.
The second was restoring the auto-gun sequence, which was cut for pacing reasons (nothing really happens, just a couple of counters running down).
There are two additional scenes which are not shown which may or may not have been filmed, I've seen sources saying both: one is of Bishop in the tunnel sneaking past a room with an alien in it; the other is Ripley finding Burke with a chest burster in the alien nest while she is searching for Newt. If anyone knows for sure please let me know.
The cocooned Burke scene was removed because it didn't make any sense. The facehugger puts the host in a coma for several hours.
the Burke scene was shot. the bishop scene is only in one of the scripts.
The last scene between Hicks and Ripley where both told each other their first name (Dwayne and Ellen) is also part of the Director's Cut; it was absent in the theatrical version.
Pretty sure the scene where Ripley finds out her daughter died is not in the theatrical cut.
@@jeremywagler3426 That's only in the special edition.
Also love The Thing 1982 -John Carpenter w/ Kurt Russell 🎉❤
I'm glad to see people watching and enjoying this classic film for the first time.
What will cook your noodle is, the movie had a fairly low budget, so James Cameron did all the effects as practical in camera effects. NO CGI.
Compare that to today where nearly every movie is loaded with CGI.
Finally a reactor that appreciates hudson. He's hilarious.
Hudson's out bursts of fear made we/the audience feel this is how we'd problably act in the marines position. They mostly come out at night-MOSTLY.
Ripley the OG female badass. Before Sarah conner, Laura croft and catwoman
This is my favorite aliens movie of all time. ❤
Never heard anyone refer to Newt as a snack before. 😂
Enjoyed your view of Aliens! For now, you'll be fine just stopping at Aliens, definitely a classic and James Cameron in full form! I would also say you both have to check out The Abyss, the movie is excellent on so many levels, you have to experience to see for yourselves, I'll be looking forward to your reaction check it out!
How is Aliens the last entertaining movie with an alien or even in the alien universe? :D I mean sure Alien and Aliens is the two best… But I still think they should watch Prometheus and Alien Covenant Heck I wouldnt even mind AVP for a good laugh :D
@@warlorddk2070 thank you for jumping in definitely do not listen to this guy telling you to stop there are plenty of good movies in the alien and Predator franchise combined and as two black men y'all most definitely got to watch Alien 3 bare minimum for Charles dutton's performance that's an all-time classic
You can def just stick with the first two. Everything is disappointing after.
@@jamesmoriarty7796 wrong sir, what kind of fan are u. They aren't all great but they all have their positives.
10:12 "Look like Denver airport"... I almost spat out my drink lol
Three of this film's actors are also memorable and entertaining in"Near Dark." Jeanette Goldstein(Vasquez), Lance Henrickson(Bishop), and Bill Paxton(Hudson) are reunited in that film.
Freakin’ awesome. One of the best sequels of all time. Right up there with Empire Strikes Back and Wrath of Khan. Btw, I’m new here, so forgive me if someone else mentioned this. Any interest in watching the ORIGINAL Star Trek films? Just curious.
rewatching these old movies makes me miss the practical effects and all the models they use and make for them
you two had me belly laughing at your Bill PAxton comments
James Cameron did well in setting us up to suspect Bishop.
The first to go is a black guy but he's taken out by a woman not an Alien. Shame Apone and Frost go early because they were good characters but in the first movie Parker was the last guy standing so at least it broke the trope of the black guy dying first
If you watch Alien3, please, please, please, please watch The Assembly Cut.
9:04 First casualty of enemy contact is your battle plan
Everybody has a plan until you get punched in the face.
you know, you mentioned it, and now I CAN NOT unsee Burke's flipped collar. And I've watched this movie over 50 times.
All the suits had it. When you make a movie 200 years or whatever into the future and the suits still look the same as they do now it's kinda lame so they said "You know what we're gonna do....?" 😂
The last movie I saw the great Bill Paxton in before he died was "The Edge Of Tomorrow," with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.
Previous to this I Paul Reiser was known for likeable characters in "Mad About You" and "Beverly Hills Cop." That set viewers of this up to be surprised by his betrayal.
Actually "Mad About You" didn't premiere until about six years after "Aliens". In that sense it was kinda a risk putting Reiser in as the affable husband, when we all knew him as the slimeball from this film.
of the 4 og movies. this is my all time favorite of the franchise.
Lance Henriksen, who played Bishop in Aliens, is severely claustrophobic and was struggling badly while filming the scene where Bishop crawls through the pipe.
I'm pretty sure that -anyone- would be claustrophobic in a freaking pipe.
This is definitely one of my top favorite movies. But overall I'm an Alien movie fan. So, I've enjoyed all of the movies for what they are. When people tell me the other movies are garbage. I say I don't care, I like them for the Alien lore. So, it was good to see both of you enjoy this one.
Alien Romulus just dropped some trailers that look pretty good so far. That story takes place between the first 2 movies. The director showed it to both Ridley Scott and James Cameron for their approval.
There is a companion book that explains the missing 57 years. The APC used is actually a towing vehicle used at airports. There is a cut scene where Ripply comes across a cocooned Burke.
To make the Ripley-Newt connection even deeper: Ripley promised to get back by her daughter’s 11th birthday: however, keep in mind travel times. At the time of the first movie, the Alien planet was 1/2 way home and travel time left was 10 months. That means they were traveling about 20 months each way plus the time on-site wherever they picked up the ore. That means Ripley’s daughter was 6-7 years old the last time she saw her.
You two are one of the few reactors that had a true appreciation of Hudson. Love y'all for calling out his one liners. They were the best.
What a great time! This is my first time seeing your channel, I hit subscribe before you even got to the opening credits.
You guys are hysterical, your channel is going to be massive..😊
So glad you two did this reaction, so much fun! A lot of people hate on part 3 but it wasn’t that bad (Charles S. Dutton and Charles Dance make it watchable )and AVP is a fun crossover.
Agree. I would say all of the Alien films are at least entertaining. Big fans of the franchise lore should never skip Alien 3, Resurrection, Prometheus, or Covenant. Also, Charles Dance is a hot in 3.
The dad probably went down into the egg chamber, leaving his wife above. This is why she wasn’t attacked.
My only issue with this movie is how Ripley tells a group of marines that they can’t help their comrades, after they get snatched by the aliens, but she has no issue going back for Newt alone. Cameron also makes the eggs so sticky, that the facehugger can’t attack Newt, like it attacked Kane in Alien.
Jenette Goldstein played Vasquez and the foster mom in Terminator 2. Michael Biehn played Hicks and Kyle Reece in Terminator.
I liked AVP (Aliens Versus Predator) with Santhaa Lathan, because of the action and suspense. I always like seeing Black woman in a leading action role since it happens infrequently. Also Alien: Resurrection shows Sigourney Weave playing the Ripley character differently. Both aren't well regarded, but I think especially with AVP you may enjoy the ride.
Every time they write crappy movies with a woman as the main character they call us sexiest. But I have NEVER met anyone that said they hated Aliens because of Ripley!
Fact is, we had strong females fifty years ago in movies! Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, Princess Leia in STAR WARS, Sarah Connor in Terminator and, perhaps the best, Ripley in the "Alien" series. I grew up with strong females. I don't need pretenders to the throne today.
Ripley is not a superhero, she is not perfect or always fearless . She is just a woman of strong will and with a lot of common sense.
Ripley doesn’t talk down to the idiots she encounters due to gender issues. Like Sarah Connor her fight isn’t against sexism or the patriarchy. Each of them is literally fighting to save the human race. Who wouldn’t want to root for them?
im tryna see u guys watch a horror film that’ll b funny af lol, loved the reaction tho
Forgot to say: the escape through the tunnels where Vasquez and Gorman meet their end inspired the tunnel/air vent chase in Doctor Who "Satan Pit" where the slightly slower moving and less scary Ood are in pursuit.
👀
I see it now.
What a fun review! I was a fan of Bill Paxton. Although a small role, he was great in Edge of Tomorrow too.
I didn't know he was in that one too
Back when this film was made I had one of the cylinder lights that they used looking into the ceiling. It was before bright L E.D.s were available, and had an incandescent lamp at one end, fluorescent tube in the side, and a side carrying strap, with "D" batteries for power. It was cool looking, and a good choice for this.
if the soldiers had followed your "shoot first then ask" rule, Newt's time in the movie would have been pretty short! 😂
20:18
she was shooting a smart gun so the bullets follow movement. she didn’t really need to aim. i know because i played the avp 2 pc video game. 😂
It's all about the details.
I'm so glad you guys didn't cut out any of the funny Hudson lines. "Why don't you put *her* in charge!" 😂
Great reaction!!
When Aliens 2 came out they were originally going to have Ripley holding Newt with an Alien behind them coming out from the water. They scrapped it because they said Sigourney Weaver's wet hair made her look too much like Michael Jackson at the time.
Love you reactions. Especially Doctor Who 💙💙
Also from Da Ville
"Game Over Man. Game Over" is one of the best known lines in all of sci-fi.
This might be my favorite sequel
11:56 Yes, you're right. Frost is actually the first to go! LOL Dietrich is only captured and cocooned first, but she accidentally takes out Frost :(
They have to keep the victim mindset, let them, it helps us out
The suit Ripley was wearing is called a loader.
For me Alien trumps them all. No crappy CGI, Just great acting, scenery, plot etc.
Hi, Syntell!! I clicked the "Like" button but I'm sorry that I'm not going to be with you and Rekkai this time. See, I just watched this show called "Moving" on Hulu and I'm over now on your other channel, #CinemaMosaic, watching the reaction playlist for it!!! ("Mama got gats!" :) ) So THANKS for this anyway and blame yourself for my non-participation here!!! LMAO!!!
😂🤣
Hey man, enjoy. Love that series. And thank you for shout out Cinema Mosaic.
Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, and Alien vs Predator are not that bad if you don't take them too seriously. All are more action with horror than the other way around. Prometheus and Alien Covenant take place about 28yrs before Alien and deals with the "Engineers" as well as the Aliens. The Engineers were creating weapons of different types and experimenting with different life forms. The planet in Prometheus is more of a military base. And the one in Alien Covenant I think not too sure on this one was another planet to experiment on. Love the reaction.
It was lots of fun rewatching with both of you! This has been a favorite since I was a kid, never gets old :)
I never laughed so hard watching Aliens! Great reaction!
I never saw the part with Newt and her family
Yeah I hate the special edition.
I knew those 'smart-gun' harnesses were designed to balance the weight and recoil but never knew they were actual steady cam harnesses - thanks for that. Almost 40 years later and I'm still learning something about this film.
"You made me tear my sack off?" All of a sudden that scene is a lot more painful to me.
Of all ypur edits, glad you saved "game over man!" I was waiting for that. Had me rofl as well.
Alien Covenant I think explains how that ship landed on that planet and Prometheus is a prequel to that movie.
If you haven't seen "The Abyss" and "True Lies," you should hit them. Bill Paxton is again unforgettable in "True Lies "
I agree about the plot of "Avatar" being derivative.
I recall hearing that James Cameron intended to write a character for Bill Paxton for Avatar 2, but he died too young to be in it.
Just found you guys. Loving your reaction to one of my favorite movies. Your reaction to Bill Paxton's lines are epic. Most of those lines were ad libbed and it's amazing how well the worked.
Just one of the best action movies made.... so well crafted.... Cameron had real problems making it in the UK as the unions were super strict with tea breaks and finishing times.... Cameron is a bit of a dictator and took no shit and so they battled constantly... they would sometimes turn all the studio lights out in mid take.. lol
Thanks for sharing your reaction to one of my favorite movies. This is my introduction to your channel.
I think the actor from Alien Resurrection that the gentlemen on the right side of the screen (sorry I don't know his name) was trying to think of is Ron Pearlman. This is my first time seeing a Syntell reaction video and I greatly enjoyed it! The Abyss is another sci-fi movie from James Cameron that's worth checking out.
My husband and I quote Hudson on a regular basis

Really.
🤔 Now that I think about it. WOW, you're right.
@@Syntell Yeah, Jenette Goldstein has since said that she wouldn't take a role as a Latina character now, but at the time it was hard enough to get cast as a woman.

YES! This is my favorite sequel. I thought it was far better than the original, IMHO.
Bill Paxton's Hudson had the BEST lines in this movie.
The marine vehicle Ripley drove to save the rest of the team reminds me of the Cybertruck. Like Elon Musk got the idea from James Cameron's "Aliens" movie.
These two movies are an amazing example of how a change in tone can help the story, especially when you're following the same main character. The first time, it's new, it's unheard of, it's terrifying. The second time, the "it" factor is gone. Time to suit up and blast em. I thought the change in directors helped bring that different tone.
6:26 "Who made them eggs - diddy?"🤣🤣🤣
Wow, I hadn't watched this in Decades! And I still remembered most of it. I think I saw it a few times back in the day. "Game over man, game over," has been so iconic and memorable, but I'd forgotten some of the other jokes. Best Character! RIP that actor, Bill Paxton.
I remember even less of Alien 3 so I don't mind seeing again if you can talk Rekkai into it. I've missed a few of the other Alien movies but I've seen Resurrection and some of the Alien Vs Predator ones. I actually liked Prometheus, so I may be in the minority.
Oh I do know one of the actors in Alien 3 is Paul McGann who plays the 8th Doctor in the WHOniverse, (that's the one before Eccleston and the revival) but he looks very different to how he does as the Doctor.
New sub here. I've come here from watching cinepals and LOVED Syntell's reactions, always funny, knowledgeable and wholesome :)
I wish I could erase the 100 times I've seen this movie so I can watch it again without knowing anything. I'm always jealous of new watchers.
Fantastic reaction guys! To be honest, I love all Alien movies, not just the first two. Each film adds something new and fresh to the lore
I think I heard once that James Cameron made the story of the space marines in this movie as a kind of allegory inspired by the Vietnam War, though I don't know if that's a fact. The space marines are cocky but also idealistic about saving the colonists. Compare that to the space marines in Avatar who are cocky but not idealistic. They're just mercenaries.
I do prefer the theatrical cut over the directors cut for first viewing. It has better shape and pacing. Then they added stuff for people who want extras for a 2nd viewing into the directors cut.
Prometheus is far from perfect and is generally bad-mouthed, but it has some great visuals and cinematography, interesting lore/backstory, and an impressive finale. It's the only film I've ever made a point of going to an Imax theater to for a second viewing, mostly to see the epic conclusion again with rumbling sound, etc.
Quick note. They weren’t studying the aliens in the compound, those were the ones they removed from people who had been attacked. After the dad, others went to the derelict ship to try to neutralize the threat, but of course it didn’t work out.
.
There’s actually a story about the infestation. I think it’s called river of pain? There’s a guy on RUclips called Alien Theory who explores all of the lore exceptionally well.
My all-time favorite❤😊Fantastic reaction 😊
Thank you so much 😁
My heart sank when you said "well, there's someone black on the team." Straight away I was like "oh, no he's right." Apone and Frost buy it first. It's absolutely my favourite movie ever made but yeah, you're absolutely right, it didn't escape the status quo on that one. Boo.
As soon as I opened the door it would have been, Posse out! Back in orbit!
All of this 👆🏾
The Chet laugh, LOL!
If you wind up watching Alien 3, I recommend getting a hold of the "Assembly Cut" if you can. It really is a step up from the theatrical release. Part 4 is pretty bad. Covenant and Prometheus are such a mixed bag. They have some really cool scenes, but each has some major flaws.
I've really enjoyed watching this with you fellows especially there toward the end when you were so convinced that a man was gonna have to come along and save Ripley. Surprise! The character of Ellen Ripley is widely accepted as the very first action hero. They couldn't top her, so they made all the ones after her men.
Most of the Aliens were still over in the main colony complex when Ripley went in to get Newt.
