      Great aspect of the movie is that the 3 most annoying characters, Gorman Hudson and Burke, all have satisfying arcs. One a very deserved cowardly end to his life and the other two with heroic redemption.

    • @wangchi_
      @wangchi_ 4 месяца назад +6

      @@seansmith4880 Totally agree with you on Gorman, but I don't think Hudson needed redemption. Sure, he was scared, but when it came to the action, he never backed down. He had to be kept in line, but when there was a task to be done, he did it. He just couldn't handle the stress of the downtime in that type of situation; when he had something to focus on, he was as good as anyone else.

    This is probably the first major action film with a female lead. This is how you do a "strong female character" in a movie. She's not a ninja, she doesn't throw soldiers to the ground and break their necks. Her character is just one person without training, but with an iron will and the heart of a lion. And the scene with the lost daughter makes her motivation clear, adding to the credibility. I don't know if this movie is better than Alien, but it's definitely a masterpiece in its own right.

    33:13 Gorman wasn’t a bad man. He was inexperienced because he is a lieutenant a low level commissioned officer. Burke and the company probably picked someone like him so he could be controlled.
    Had Sergeant Apone lived he would have been there to properly advise Gorman. But he was humble enough to let Hicks run the squad after he woke up.
    In the end Gorman went out like a Marine. He died trying to save a fellow Marine who was down. He couldn’t save Vasquez but he made sure she didn’t go out alone.

      Another thing is the Marines command didn't take the alien threat seriously,by only sending 2 quads of Marines to combat them.Of course they had no info on their foe at all tho. And when Ripley was briefing the Marines,they were joking about another-BUG-hunt,not taking their mission seriously.That's when Sgt Apone put the-HAMMER-down on them tho. A good trait of a GOOD NCO.The actor playing Sgt Apone had served in Vietnam and got a little anzy when guys had their fingers on the triggers of their prop guns. Great reaction! Couple fun facts, Bill Paxton was constantly apologizing to Carrie Henn (Newt) on set due to swearing so much in front of her. When the cast was undergoing training to play the Colonial Marines (Al Matthews (Apone) was a Marine in Vietnam and it showed in his great performance), Sigourney wasn't able to be there for it, making the "waking up" scene even more convincing where Ripley was the outsider surrounded by comrades in arms who had been through it together. Sigourney was grossly underpaid in Alien, so she pushed hard to get paid what she was worth for this movie, and eventually succeeded. Carrie Henn didn't continue with an acting career and instead became a school teacher, though in 2022 she returned to the film industry.

    This is a Director's Cut of Aliens. The two main changes are the scene where Newt's family find the downed ship from Alien. In the theatrical release you don't see the colony until Ripley and the marines arrive. This was supposed to ramp up suspense so you only get to see planet LV-426 from the main character perspective.
    The second was restoring the auto-gun sequence, which was cut for pacing reasons (nothing really happens, just a couple of counters running down).
    There are two additional scenes which are not shown which may or may not have been filmed, I've seen sources saying both: one is of Bishop in the tunnel sneaking past a room with an alien in it; the other is Ripley finding Burke with a chest burster in the alien nest while she is searching for Newt. If anyone knows for sure please let me know.

I had to pause immediately andnjust give you props for being the first reactors, after seeing nearly all other who have reacted to this movie, actually understand what the dude means by "there goes our salvage boys". It seems like such an obvious line as well as it being completely unimportant to the overall plot, but not a single reactor has ever mentioned they understood what that meant.

    To make the Ripley-Newt connection even deeper: Ripley promised to get back by her daughter’s 11th birthday: however, keep in mind travel times. At the time of the first movie, the Alien planet was 1/2 way home and travel time left was 10 months. That means they were traveling about 20 months each way plus the time on-site wherever they picked up the ore. That means Ripley’s daughter was 6-7 years old the last time she saw her.

It was before bright L E.D.s were available, and had an incandescent lamp at one end, fluorescent tube in the side, and a carrying strap, with "D" batteries for power. It was cool looking, and a good choice for this.

    I liked AVP (Aliens Versus Predator) with Santhaa Lathan, because of the action and suspense. I always like seeing Black woman in a leading action role since it happens infrequently. Also Alien: Resurrection shows Sigourney Weave playing the Ripley character differently. Both aren't well regarded, but I think especially with AVP you may enjoy the ride.

    • @colinloves
      @colinloves 2 месяца назад

      Even AVP 2 - Most people hate it. and yes, its bad. But to me, its about the Predator hunting the Alien, you get into the reasons for his actions and thats what makes it great. The studio wasnt gonna make a movie with hardly any talking. But ideally, it would of been good only to have people in it, to be killed. The stars are the aliens. - we can tell stories without words.

      Ripley is not a superhero, she is not perfect or always fearless . She is just a woman of strong will and with a lot of common sense.
      Ripley doesn’t talk down to the idiots she encounters due to gender issues. Like Sarah Connor her fight isn’t against sexism or the patriarchy. Each of them is literally fighting to save the human race. Who wouldn’t want to root for them?

    Wow, I hadn't watched this in Decades! And I still remembered most of it. I think I saw it a few times back in the day. "Game over man, game over," has been so iconic and memorable, but I'd forgotten some of the other jokes. Best Character! RIP that actor, Bill Paxton.
    I remember even less of Alien 3 so I don't mind seeing again if you can talk Rekkai into it. I've missed a few of the other Alien movies but I've seen Resurrection and some of the Alien Vs Predator ones. I actually liked Prometheus, so I may be in the minority.
    Oh I do know one of the actors in Alien 3 is Paul McGann who plays the 8th Doctor in the WHOniverse, (that's the one before Eccleston and the revival) but he looks very different to how he does as the Doctor.

    The facehuggers that were in with Ripley and Newt were in those tubes that Ripley saw. They were the ones that were still alive from when the colonists were trying to remove them from those that had been impregnated. Burke likely grabbed her gun and tossed the tubes in before sealing the door. Also, in regards to your comment about the intelligence of the aliens, it is something that depends on the story/media they're in. The drones can range from the average dog to the average human in terms of intelligence. The queen had been said to range from average human to Einstein.
    Also, a little fun fact: apparently the child actress playing Newt kept intentionally messing up the part when she slides down the duct because she wanted to keep going down the slide. James Cameron made a deal with her where if she finished the scene, he'll let her play on it as much as she wants. They finished the scene and he kept his word.

    These two movies are an amazing example of how a change in tone can help the story, especially when you're following the same main character. The first time, it's new, it's unheard of, it's terrifying. The second time, the "it" factor is gone. Time to suit up and blast em. I thought the change in directors helped bring that different tone.

    The dad probably went down into the egg chamber, leaving his wife above. This is why she wasn’t attacked.
    My only issue with this movie is how Ripley tells a group of marines that they can’t help their comrades, after they get snatched by the aliens, but she has no issue going back for Newt alone. Cameron also makes the eggs so sticky, that the facehugger can’t attack Newt, like it attacked Kane in Alien.
    Jenette Goldstein played Vasquez and the foster mom in Terminator 2. Michael Biehn played Hicks and Kyle Reece in Terminator.

    Fun facts time: The Colony Mayor, also played Captain Hollister in British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf. He was also the "Thirsty Cop" in the Fifth Element and was also in the war movie Memphis Belle.
    Counting the special edition, no fewer than four members of the cast of Aliens were voice actors, who were in Starfleet, a British produced English language version of a Japanese sci-fi marionet series. Mark Rolston, who played Drake, the big gruff blonde marine, played the pudgy comic relief character. Brian Ferry, lead guitarist from Queen, also produced a rock album inspired by the series, as a collaboration with Eddie VanHalen.
    Newt's brother Timmy, is played by Carrie Henn's (Newt) real brother Russ. Russ had originally auditioned for the movie, having been an experienced child actor who had done TV commercials and Carrie went along for morale support, was asked to try out and got picked to play Newt.
