    The Xenomorph Queen is the largest puppet in the history of film. It's about 20 feet long and 14 tall, and is hung from a crane (part of the reason the head is so big is to hide the cables). It requires 12-16 people to operate the creature, a combination of rod puppetry, animatronics, and two stuntmen INSIDE the queen doing the arms.

    The Power Loader effect was created in a couple of different ways. Some were a foam exoskeleton that was actually piloted by a very large & strong stuntman, who was enclosed in the chassis behind Sigourney. Some were rod-puppeted while balanced using a large lever. Sometimes it was held up using cables, marionette-style. For background shots, stop-motion and smaller rod-puppets were used.
    This movie uses no blue or greenscreen effects with actors in frame. All effects with the actors were done using a high-fidelity rear-projection screen with footage filmed using miniatures and puppetry, sort of a low-tech version of Disney's "Volume" used on the Star Wars & Marvel projects in recent years. This had the advantage of blending the lighting from the photography seamlessly and adding focal depth, making the effects look extremely realistic.
    Cameron, before becoming a director, was an extremely talented special effects technician and matte painter working for Roger Corman. He supervised all of the effects for Battle Beyond the Stars and Galaxy of Terror, and also did the matte paintings for Escape From New York. He re-used many of the techniques he developed on those films for this one, as well as The Terminator and The Abyss.

      @@grizzledwizard7129 Other unrelated fun facts: Ripley's elderly daughter is actually played by Sigourney's mom. And Carrie Henn, who played Newt, had never acted before, not even in a school play.
      The casting director went to schools across the UK trying to cast the part but every kid who had acting experience would look at the camera and smile after saying their lines, which was inappropriate for a kid who was suffering from PTSD. Newt's brother was also played by Carrie's brother, who was often on-set with their mom during school breaks watching Carrie working, and James asked if he'd like a small part in the movie as well.

Mark Rolston, who played Drake (The big, gruff blonde Marine) was the voice of the tubby comic relief character and Newt's dad is the hero. Two deleted scenes worth mentioning. When they are discussing on how to get the second dropship down, the Aliens banging on the door can still be heard. But, after Bishop volunteers to go outside, the banging then stops. The scene continues on with Vasquez being the first to realise they've broken through the door. Hicks utters the chilling line "Their in the complex".
    The other deleted scene is Ripley encountering Burke in the hive. Where he is already cocooned and has an alien inside him. She hands him a grenade before moving on. The scene was cut because not enough time had passed for Burke to already be impregnated and conscious.
    However, Burke using the grenade was what caused the explosion that forced Ripley and Newt to detour in to the Queen's lair.

    Two interesting anecdotes. Carrie Henn (Newt) enjoyed sliding down the chute that they shot the scene a number of times. The day before the shoot of the water scene, the Assistant Director had the water heated ready for the next day. When they came to do the scene Newt said the water was too warm, so her and the "Alien" sat on the side bathing their feet in the water till it cooled a little. Carrie went on to become a Primary School Teacher, though Sigourney and her remained close friends.

      It wasn't simply that Carrie enjoyed sliding down so much that they shot it a number of times. Carrie loved the slide so much that she kept on deliberately messing up the takes, so that she could go down it again. Finally, James Cameron had to promise her that if she stopped sabotaging the shot, she could then play on it for as long as she wanted.

    Ripley was undergoing company mandated psych evaluation at the time she was sent back. Burke went as far as to mention her nightmares to her face to try and send her back. She accepted after waking up in tear from the nightmares, and it's fairly safe to assume the company was conditioning her. I've always thought that silent exchange between Ripley and the queen was Ripley indicating "I have a flamethrower. I can incinerate all these eggs. Just let Newt and me back out of the room." The queen seems to agree and orders her drones to back off. It looks like they came to an understanding. But when the egg opens up, Ripley realized the queen went back on her word, hence that "You MF'er" look Ripley gives the queen.

    Awesome movie which I saw at the Odeon Cinema in Nottingham back in 1986.Always remember when Hicks climbed up on to the table,lifted up the suspended ceiling,shone the torch into the void and saw the Aliens crawling through.The gasp in the cinema from the audience still remains with me to this day as it seems like everyone was holding their breath.Aliens is just one of the best sequels ever along with Terminator 2:Judgement day.Great reaction to this movie by the way.😸👍

    10:50 Halo CE took a huge amount of inspiration from Aliens, such as Sgt Maj Johnson being an expy of Apone, the design of the UNSC equipment being similar to that of the Colonial Marines, almost direct dialogue references, the design of the Elites being vaguely similar to the xenomorphs (especially in Halo 2 with the councilors), etc.

    When Hudson and Hicks mentioned that it was going to be another bug-hunt they meant it was going to be another alien infestation in general terms. The backstory on these Colonial Marine unit had them losing several team members on a previous mission against a different type of aliens.

    • @Gunnar001
      @Gunnar001 8 месяцев назад

      Hudson is asking if it’s gonna be just another “bug hunt” (meaning a typical boring clean-up extermination mission) or if they’re finally gonna see some real action and get into a “standup fight” (an actual battle against a challenging foe.)
      The most advanced form of alien life encountered so far in the ALIEN universe (not including the Space Jockey) has basically been non-sentient wildlife. Just alien animals roaming around the environment on some newly discovered worlds.
      These Marines specialize in wiping out any hostile alien animals that threaten colonists or anyone else living on the planet. This probably doesn’t pose too much of a challenge for the Marines with all their advanced technology and firepower. To them, it’s just _“another bug hunt.”_ Glorified pest control.
      They have never encountered anything like the Xenomorphs before. So, they did end up getting their standup fight.

    Probably my favorite scifi movie of all time. And remember, NO CGI. Aliens doesn't have any CGI as we would now understand the term. The special effects were achieved using miniatures, puppets, costumes, and optical compositing along with sets and matte paintings. Keep in mind this was in 1986, the technology did not exist to generate compelling imagery on computers. No modern CGI was used until Alien3. The wireframe images on the computer screen in Alien could technically be considered CGI, but the first time that was used was in 1958 with Hitchcock's Vertigo. All the aliens, the queen, the mech lifter...everything is practical effects and camera special effects. You mentioned the scene with the lifter. Those were practical suits on hydraulic lifts. And not a composite shot...that's just actually another one behind her being puppeted in the same scene. So the Marines actors all got to decorate their own armor by what they felt their character would want. So this movie is to action movies what Alien was to horror. A very different feel as this is scifi/horror/action where Alien was more scifi/horror. But the fantastic thing is although different in it's atmosphere and feel, it is more of a enhancement to the first story than a hinderance unlike some other franchises that didn't keep with the same directors and directions. Of course you can't ignore the most legendary battle of all times with that scene of the Queen and Ripley. So incredible that they could make a giant puppet attached to a forklift seem so lifelike and alive. I love that you feel that it had such a happy ending...knowing that there are two more movies for Ripley coming up. LOL.

    "....and that a xenomorph may be involved." The word "xenomorph" is not some kind of official term Gorman is using for the alien-it simply means that they believe there's some kind of alien life-form involved in the colony's disappearance. The Colonial Marines have been called in to kill various kinds of aliens before, and they would have used the term "xenomorph" (literally, "strange form," and technically used for any non-terrestrial animal) to refer to whatever "bugs" they were stomping. The Aliens fandom has adopted the term "Xenomorph" to refer to the aliens themselves, but when Gorman used the word, he wasn't referring to our titular Alien aliens-he just meant that there was some kind of unknown alien life down on the planet.

    • @regulator18E
      @regulator18E 3 месяца назад

      To add a little more to this: the line and term also add to Gormans character being a trope of pretentious military officers.
      There was already a divide between him and the grunts (chow scene "looks like the new LT is too good to eat with us") and him using xenomorph as a technical term was a way for him to appear smarter than the troops.
      You see right away Frost's reaction is "a what?" and Hicks has to clarify "it's a bug hunt."
      So the term xenomorph that we've all adopted as a species name was just a made up term by some cherry LT trying to look smarter than his troops 😂

    Affirmative!
    -
    I have seen this movie DOZENS of times. It was my first Alien franchise film when I was a child (an adult took me when I was 9). I had never thought of Hudson's boasting on the drop as his way of re-assuring Ripley. It gives a whole new perspective and adds to the loss of his character.
    -
    If you notice, Hicks actually throws Drake's fire off when Newt is first encountered. If not for Hick's Newt would have been lit up by Drake. His weapon has auto-target and tracking assist via the articulated arm. His Helmet Display will be fed IR and other sensor data and actually outline a target. The articulated arms will guide the weapon on target, though will easily respond to you manually moving the weapon and it will retarget what you move towards. As badass as Drake was, he failed to verify the target as hostile before firing, which shows how on edge he must have been. He even got angry at Hicks for misdirecting his fire. However, he quickly realized his error.
    -
    Lieutenant Gorman is ultimately at fault for not prepping his units properly. All he had to do was explain why there could not be firing down there and trust his unit to sling the rifles with safeties on, without collecting magazines. Then there would not have been a bag full of magazines to explode. I would have likely withdrawn them and had them rearm with more flame units. Plus they could have put the rifles on single fire and CHECKED shots. Once they killed the chest burster and the movement began, they should have immediately fallen back. If he had explained to at least the Sergeant, then HE would have known to pull back to where the team COULD fire safely. Lieutenant Gorman is again responsible for the fatalities.

    • @JoeFF85
      @JoeFF85 8 месяцев назад +3

      I feel like Gorman was "too green" to know he could lean on his noncoms. He seems to feel like any questions are undermining him even when they are just for clarification. He definitely wasn't seasoned enough to lead a team without oversight but the whole operation was FUBAR for jump since the company was in charge and not the Corps.

Decades after the war, he started having the same terrible nightmares he’d had when he first got home from overseas. Perhaps a fun sidenote: The rulebook for 40k came out in 1987, one year after this movie hit cinemas. It might just be possible the marine inspiration didn't come from 40k, but 40k was inspired by this movie instead.
    "Game over, man" was actually an ad-lib from Bill Paxton because he didn't want to say the same thing over and over. I don't think Cameron or Paxton knew how big gaming would become in the future, but it works so well with our culture for gaming nowadays.
    *Queen*
    You see that Ripley shoots her flamethrower and then _points_ the flamethrower at one of the eggs. The Queen is smart enough to understand that threat, so that's why she calls off the backup from the sides. As Ripley backs away, near the end of the eggs opens up. To Ripley (as you said, 'the expression') that's a breach of contract from the Queen. If the Queen doesn't hold up her promise, Ripley can rip away as well, which she does.
    *Special Edition*
    The Theatrical Edition cut out a couple of things, for instance:
    - The dialogue between Ripley and Burke about her daughter's death, meaning in the Theatrical version you never get to hear Ripley has a daughter.
    - Hicks and Ripley never exchange first names.
    - I believe the trek from Newt with her family to the ship is also cut from the Theatrical version, because we already know what must've happened from _Alien_ .
    - The scenes with the mobile sentries in the hallways were also cut because they didn't progress the story.
    *Alien director's cut*
    In the director's cut for _Alien_ , Ripley finds Dallas in a suspended state like the colonists in _Aliens_ which kinds of 'spoils' this first experience. Ridley Scott didn't want to include that scene because it didn't fit his movie, so he left it out for the theatrical version.
