So here is something a little bit different on the channel! Ever since I started Alien Isolation, so many of you have recommended that I watched the movie, so here you go! This is the first time I've had to edit a movie reation, so I'm sorry if it's not that good. I tried my best to keep it entertaining to watch, but still have as much of the movie in the video as possible.

This is a classic for a reason the practical effects are stunning and still hold up today the same can be said for the predator film.
The set design is just... Its
a feast for the eyes, I watch parts of the movie just for the visuals, especially the opening shot.
and the sequel
Terminator is a classic and the effects were terrible when it was new.
Terminator has 🚫 on Alien. Maybe aliens. Both were over the top and over acted and the effects of the story were less impactful.
And for “The Thing” (1982).
Alien: Isolation recreates the aesthetic so perfectly, it was obviously a labor of love.
The sound design of this is an underrated part of the experience.
Gotta see Aliens now. Great sequel.
This movie still stands up quite well even today, 43 years later. What always grabs me is how good the soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith actually is. Not much actual "music" but more short sections and ambient tones that fill you with dread, loneliness and fear from the very first frame. Anyway, the sequel is also excellent - considered one of the greatest sequels of all time - though it is quite a different type of movie. Personally, I cannot recommend any of the sequels after number 2, "Aliens". None of them ever quite live up to the very high standard that the first two set.
That last ten minutes or so from the self destruct onwards is some of the most intense in film history. Three explosions of the Nostromo might have been a bit too much though...
One idea that was thrown around during development, but was rejected of course, was that after Ripley escapes on the shuttle, the alien kills her, climbs into the pilot's seat, presses some buttons and then sends out an S.O.S. _in Captain Dallas' voice!_ That would have been quite a crazy ending, eh?
Jerry Goldsmith did an amazing job with the music, however, the themes are directly adapted from Howard Hanson's Symphony Number 2. It provided a spectacular mood for this film.
It doesn't just stand up quite well, it stands up exceptionally well.
Am I the only one who thought Alien: Resurrection was at least a passable Alien movie? I mean, yeah, there's some cringe dialog that takes you out of the movie, but I think the lab with all the failed experiments is one of the most iconic scenes in all of the Alien franchise. Also, the alien 'baby' is, imo, one of the most terrifying movie monsters ever to grace a screen.
@@egl12fen I completely enjoyed Resurrection. The cast was well chosen, the plot was exciting, the Science was horrific, the theme of an android being more humane than actual humans was in keeping with the 'verse of Aliens and Blade Runner, and let us not forget that the director is amazingly original (see his "City of Lost Children" / "Cite des enfants perdus") and the script is by Joss Whedon. Say what you must about his character, but Whedon is one of the most gifted and original screen writers of the past 30 years.
23:22, fun fact: In order for the cat to hiss at the Alien, they had a muzzled Doberman hiding behind a cardboard box, and after they removed the box, the cast was actually hissing at the dog, making the scene work.
It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it made $200 million dollars against an $11 million dollar budget, it put Sigourney Weaver on the map, it spawned 3 Sequels, 2 spinoff/prequel films, toys, board games, novelizations, comics, novels, and an upcoming live action TV series based on the movie. It's now considered to be one of the scariest motion pictures ever made.
I watched this movie for the first time when I was a teenager. I had just gotten home from work at 1:00 am and everyone else was out of town. At the beginning of the movie I was sitting in a dark TV room with a bowl of popcorn. When Dallas made his wrong turn I flew out of the recliner and dumped the remaining popcorn all over the place. By the end of the movie I had every light in the house on and was holding an aluminum baseball bat. Horror movies are not really my thing but this is still the best one I've ever seen.
23:50 -- to the extent the face of a cat expresses emotion, I always had the feeling that Jones was wonderfully calm and cynical here: "Oh well! Better him than me."
The "rain" is just condensation from the equipment.
One thing that's easily missed in that same segment is that when they show the chains, the xenomorph is there hanging, but it's shadowed in such a way that you easily mistake it for standard equipment

The alien hanging from the chains is in the Directors Cut.
It could also be water leakage (perhaps deliberate venting) from the cooling system which gets recycled down a drain in that area. One fan theory is that the alien's fast growth is due to filling up with water (+ a source of nutrients) with an inflatable bio-structure. Insects that feed on blood have that capability to instantly grow 10 times their original size. Aliens are also explicitly attracted to the cooling system (big water source) in the second movie so the theory holds, um, some water. :)
The rain is clearly condensation. You have a huge ore ship, with millions tonnes of ore. A substantial amount of this would be water, and it would be crazy to have HVAC systems installed, other than in the living quarters. Which is just a fraction of the ship.
When Fox allowed Alien:Isolation - they handed over 3TB of photos and artwork from this movie. That's why it looks so authentic. Too authentic! I got drunk once when watching this film; I reached for my mouse and tried to control Ripley, because it looked just like the game!

I was 25 when this premiered and very happy that good sci-fi movies were coming out. Pre Star Wars there wasn't a lot to choose from. This movie, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Terminator all came out within 7 years. It was a good time for movies.

@@Cambonano Nobody has probably pointed it out here yet, but Aliens is just as good a film, and it belongs among the sequels, which are quite different from the original film, and at the same time just as good if not better.
After all, it was made by James Cameron, the man who made pioneering films.
Seriously, Aliens focuses on the characters and the story, and oddly enough, the mother-daughter relationship (but that's a bit more complicated, and it's necessary to see the director's cut for that).
The subsequent follow-ups are not worth mentioning.
@@Cambonano I'd love to see you react to 'The Promised Neverland'. It's an anime. It's very cute but also terrifying. But there aren't any jump scares or gore. It's all situational and psychological.
To make the ship look even bigger, they dressed up Ridley Scott's small sons in the environmental suits and instantly everything appeared TWICE as big. It's amazing how things were done pre-CGI.
VFX goes back to the dawn of film. Even bluescreen is almost as old, as cinema history.
Not the ship, but the space jockey. It would have been too expensive to build at full scale.
There's a video of the exploring "crew" walking inside of alien space jockey mother ship, and if you zoom in you can see the faces of little boys inside their small suits.
Wrong b.c. there was no ship they stood next to. You talk about the dead guy.

I'm glad to see that you discover this masterpiece of the 7th Art. The movie is like a good wine: it gets better with time.
I had it the first time when I was 10 years old. What a shock it was for me. I found it both scary and fascinating.
Aliens and Alien 3 also deserve to be discovered in my opinion. I hope you will have a look at them.

Alien 3 is interesting mostly for what could have been. It was David Fincher's first film, and the studio deliberately used a rookie in order to control the final product. What might have been if Fincher had been allowed to realize his "Wooden World" is fascinating.
I also like Resurrection. Whedon writing an Alien script, and the Amelie guy directing it? Be still, my weird little heart.
@@michaelccozens : yes, it seems to me that David Fincher had more or less denied Alien 3. Despite its flaws, I find it a very interesting film. The latter underwent a difficult gestation during its production but this work is well-kept. Especially the last part.
Alien Ressurection was a rather strange experience for me. I recognize some qualities: the casting is cool, some scenes have even become emblematic for me but I haven’t been one scared for a moment. After that... I always prefer him to Prometheus or Alien Covenant. :)
It has aged wo well.

Such a pleasure for your first movie. The editing was done very well, the observations sharp, and the immersion you projected were all just fine. Of course, Aliens is now required viewing -- hope it is soon!

The cast DID KNOW about the chestburster scene. It was in the script. What Ridley Scott kept secret from them up to the time of shooting the scene was how it was going to be done technically speaking. BUT the cameras, lights, other equipment were covered in plastic so they knew it was going to be messy. Contrary to popular but misleading comments, it was just regular stage blood not real animal blood and the cast did not know what the chestburster creature was going to look like. The script read "Kane screams in pain as the creature emerges through his torso". This movie is a part of cinema history. The facts and truth about it should be respected.

Ahh, Cam checking one of the greatest horror movies ever.♥️ If you've never seen John Carpenter's The Thing yet, definitely check that one out too. It's a lot of people's favorite horror movie ever, and absolutely my favorite.
The original Thing from the 50s, directed by Nyby and produced by Hawks, is dated but a very solid piece of filmmaking for its day.
The Carpenter update is just freakin' next-level, though.
Enjoyed this. Movie reactions will bring you a whole new audience... Alien 2 is definitely worth watching and is still in your wheelhouse.

In Alien isolation you played as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley you see in this film. A big chunk of the first part of the game is about finding the flight recorder from the Nastromo & Amanda is even on the mission in the first place to find out what happened to her Mom. At the end of the game Amanda finds a recording from her mother. And they used Sigourney Weaver's voice for the game as well!
The Alien Isolation developers really did an amazing job recreating the environment, atmosphere, and aesthetics from the film. Really impressive job and such a good game (and movie).
"So with the sleeping pods do you have to sleep on your back?" I laughed so hard thinking about that I am pretty sure I made my neighbors angry. I doubt anyone has ever had that cross their mind when watching this movie before, but then there is also the idea of living in the world of Alien and someone getting into the pods in some different way and gaining a reputation as this complete weirdo for doing it, like, "What do you mean Dave sleeps in the pod on his stomach?" "Yeah, climbs in face down, too, doesn't even turn his head or anything, just goes stiff like a plank of wood and says that's the way he likes it." "Weeeeiiirrrd..." lol

Ridley Scott's kids Jake & Luke appeared in the movie, playing smaller versions of the Nostromo crew when they explore the derelict. They're dressed in scaled down spacesuits, and Ridley used them to make the sets seem even bigger.

Great reaction! I remember seeing this film at the age of 6 when my parents watched it when they rented it. I saw the sequel Aliens in the theater when I was 13. I had nightmares for a couple of nights. But it’s one of the best sequels. Ripley is a complete bad ass. But I’ll say this, people like Jennifer Lawrence would have u think she is the first female action star.
Yes, Ripley is the queen of thinking on her feet. Making the right call in the heat of the moment. This film has an aesthetic that is consistent with technology and design in this world around the year 2122. If you watch the other films, there are things that are similar, but of course they aren't all set at exactly the same time period, so there are some differences.
Ripley is THE GREATEST cat lady working in space of all time, thankyouverymuch.

If you're going to continue with the movie reactions then the obvious choice for the next movie is the sequel, Aliens. It's often considered one of the best sequels ever made.

Practical Effects: timeless. In a world pre-cgi, the use of models, props, camera and lighting effects, just makes everything so much more real. Hopefully, you'll do the sequel, Aliens. Allen is the gold standard for horror sci fi. To many, Aliens is even better than the original.
I would have stopped when I saw the derelict spaceship. I'd have been like, Nah I'm out.

The actress who played Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) was also the little girl in Hitchcock's "the birds". Her sister (Angie Cartwright) was in "the sound of music" and played Penny in "lost in space" in the 1960s.

One of my all time favourite movies, an absolute classic. It first came out in 1979 Cam, so it's actually over 40 years old. 4 of the original cast members have since passed away: John Hurt(Kane), Harry Dean Stanton(Brett), Yaphet Kotto(Parker) and Ian Holm(Ash). None of the cast knew they were going to use real animal guts and blood when they filmed the infamous "chestburster" scene, so their horrified reactions are for real. 🙂

A lot of people consider "Aliens" to be the better movie. However, there is a level of creepiness to the first one that can't be matched by the sequel. The cyborg is particularly unsettling
'Alien' is such a simple story at heart of saving a cat.

It wasn't a robot - that's a man in a suit. He's just moving slowly. I find that scene the most scary, it moves in such an inhuman way.
"Ok, that wasn't so bad".. Are you nuts? The sound of Parker and Lambert dying over the intercom is pure nightmare fuel. We're left to imagine what the hell is happening to them while Ripley is running to reach them.

Many reactors get confused when they first hear the term "Mother" in this film, but you connected the dots quickly. Frankly, people's confusion about this surprised me - I've used the term for ages to refer to any sci-fi AI that communicates with a calm, female voice - the AI of the Enterprise in "Star Trek: The Next Generation", for instance. According to real-life AI, calling a sci-fi AI "Mother" actually is a sci-fi trope, but perhaps not a widely applied one. Thanks for the reaction!
No CGI in this movie, in the original. This version that you watched, was released in 2003, and there are a few CGI edits inserted into it, mainly the explosions when the Nostromo is destroyed.
Alien came out about 9 months after Star Wars came out. Alien, thanks to H.R. Geiger made the movie more realistic and had the look of reality.

*Howard Hanson's music's was used without his permission, the Romantic Symphony No. 2, but he heard the movie was a hit, so he didn't sue. The music has a relaxing "breath of fresh air" feel to it, and it perfectly fits the sense of calm and safety Ripply finally feels at the end.*

Very interesting perspective, having played Isolation before seeing the original. That's a nice twist on the usual situation.
I first saw this on American cable TV on Feb. 7, 1981, at age 10. I absolutely loved it even though it was terrifying. I have no idea how many times I've seen it since then. It was the first movie I bought on videotape, and since then I've had multiple copies on multiple formats. Watching it with people who have not seen it is always great fun; the reaction when it gets Dallas in the air shaft is always spectacular.
Great video. Do Aliens next, but please be sure to do the Special Edition. It has some key story scenes which were cut for time for the theatrical version.
Very good reaction to this classic Sci-fi. You should continue with film reviews as there are a treasure trove of great films. Also Aliens is excellent.
Fun reaction, you should check out the other Alien movies too, quiet a lot of them. Some time next year we're also getting a TV series that takes place in the Alien universe.

Great reaction vid Cam - this movie will give you a lot more insight into Alien Isolation. However if you want to see what happens to Ripley you will need to watch Aliens :D You can finish AI first as Aliens is set after the game.

Imagine watching this for the first time, midnight. 😄 My brothers were so engrossed they jumped when I yelled "Behind you!". 🤣 And gave me brickbats for frightening them. The yell wasn't intentional though. 😄
I watched this movie in the 80s, then played the earlier Alien vs Predator games which are rather good. Imagine controlling a hatchling in search of prey then becoming the full grown adult or a Marine moving cautiously around with the tracker. AvP captured the atmosphere very well. Couldn't get into Alien Isolation though.
Ripley was the AFO with Kane out so she was following SOP when she denied the team entry on account of uncertain status and unidentified organism. Ash did not follow the chain of command when he let the team in so she took him to task for disobeying the CoC and company rules. I'd say she was operating on personal assessments (which are coolly prudent and logical. That's her personality) backed by company rules.

Very enjoyable video! You're really entertaining. Hope you have since watched the second movie, in which Ripley is even cooler! I don't really recommend the further parts, except *Alien:* *Covenant* which has finally become a really good Alien movie again. I highly recommend it! Another heroine (Daniels by Katherine Waterstone), but I really liked her too, she became a worthy successor to Ripley.
There was no robot alien in the movie. The small one was a moving puppet, the big one a tall, Nigerian actor (Bolaji Badejo) in alien costume.
