For sure. Also, not ideal to get a lung full of the bad smoke...it's no fire pit you're inhaling.
      1. Could be state law for you (unsure, but is here in NC) to report a fire and it be investigated
      2. Insurance purposes if that is a factor

I've been a woodworker for 20+ years and always spread out my rags and lay them flat on a non-combustible surface (like concrete) until they turn hard. Do this outside. Then you can throw them out. I also have a metal paint can filled with water halfway for rags inside, always seal the lid. On every can of pretty much any oil based stain, varnish, lacquer, poly, paint thinner, warns that they can spontaneously combust if not properly disposed. People never read it. Linseed oil is one of the worst offenders.....it's a great sealer for wood but when it evaporates on a rag after use, it heats up quickly. You can feel the heat coming from the rag.....bundled up and squished rags make this worse. Glad you caught this in time and saved some incredible head and heart aches.
On a side note, I would reuse that burned wood. It turns out beautiful if you know how to prep it. Use a wire brush along the grain to remove to char, this exposes the sapwood and gives the wood some amazing texture. You can then stain or poly it. I've created many art pieces using this technique (called Shou Sugi Ban). You probably don't want it back on the wall but you could make a cool picture frame or another art piece out of it.

Granger the first thing you need to do is purchase fire extinguishers to be on every level and corner of the barn. Fire alarm system needs to be put in even before the construction is completed. God brought you out to look at the barn not by chance. It was a divine appointment. Seeing this and hearing the concern/fear in your voice took me back to when our home caught on fire and we almost lost my younger sister who was 16 at the time. She gets up at 5 AM to be at school by 6 AM for marching band practice. So by 5 PM in the evening she was tired when the fire happened.
Our family home caught fire one evening. The kitchen/dining room area hallway to the back family room walls and ceiling were 1 inch pine and lacquered. The home was over 50 years old. Our youngest sister was home while our parents were visiting me at the hospital one hour away. She put grease on the stove to cook french fries and left the plastic handle, metal spoon in the pot of grease and went to the great room and sat down and fell asleep. Our two small dogs jumped on her and woke her up and the house was thick with smoke. She went next-door to the neighbors and told them and they thought it would be something they could put out. The entire kitchen was engulfed in flames and they called the volunteer fire department and they put the fire out.
It was so hot that it warped, the refrigerator and freezer.
The fire fighter said another 2 to 3 minutes we would’ve lost our entire home as it has just gotten into the duct system. The firefighters told us that the naughty wood pine that was lacquered was a fire waiting to happen. Lacquer is an accelerant for wood, especially old wood.
Kudos to the Valparaiso Florida volunteer fire fighters as they cleaned it up before they left. We were out of our home for three months. We are very blessed that God watched over our youngest sister and two dogs. The lacquered knotty pine was removed from the rest of the walls in our home.

I am so sorry this happened. I am very thankful that God was watching over y'all. I know it could've been so much worse. I have to say that I am very thankful for this information because my adult kids and I did not have any idea about what could happen with those rags we throw in the trash.. We are about to start doing a lot of wood projects and this video, I'm sure, saved us some heartbreak! Thank you for sharing. Much love and prayers y'all!

I always soaked my rags in my shop. 5 gal bucket half full of water. That drywall saved that barn

I have to say, most barns are not standing after a fire. Your barn is still standing! because by the grace of God, you walked out to the barn when you did. What also helps out with this barn standing is how it was built. Count your blessing no one was hurt and no animals lived were lost! Wood and drywall outlets can and will be replaced. It's a learning lesson for all of us. It's nothing to dwell on. Everyone is safe.❤❤❤❤

My heart goes out to you for this to have happened. Nature brought you outdoors to see the fire of which you handel real well or could have been worse. Yes there is smoke damage and can be taken care of. Going to be the cleanest barn in town. God does work in mysterious ways with lessons in life. Love y'all

I’ve stained a lot of things in the house. Window trim. … etc. Old farm houses need refreshing. And I had often wondered “Can I just skip a step and throw stain or polyurethane rags away”? But I stop myself and find a container with water and soak them or dry the rags outside.
I’ve heard the stories of how they can combust.
I’m so grateful no one was hurt and you caught it in the Nick of time. Thank you for sharing!!!!!!
Your guys will get it done and feel grateful for your grace.

Our God is so AWESOME! So sorry that we were taught a lesson at your expense, but what hit me most was that the worker owned up to it, your contractor got right on it, and you handled everything (expectedly) with GRACE. This video taught several lessons. Thank you.

My sister and I where staining a mantle when my parents where remodeling as kids. We left the rags on the plywood floor and by the next day it had burnt a 5 ft circle and the plywood down to an 1/8in thick. Almost burnt the house down. Tough way to learn a lesson but we where very lucky like you guys.

This is a bummer. So glad you were home and wanted to go check on the barn and the off smell got your attention. We all make mistakes. You handled the team well, on camera. Give them grace. I still want to see Amber's thoughts.
