    👏 🏆 🔧 This is the best tutorial for the Panther platform trans oil and filter change. The narration and explanation are excellent, the camera work was great (tripod!), and there was no annoying and distracting metal/techno/rap "music" blasting in the background. This is a professional-looking production that walks the novice through the process. Thank you for the superb work, WJ Handy Dad.

    Just changed transmission fluid/filter and installed the drain plug following your excellent video. 2011 P7B from Sheriffs department with 102k miles and 5101 idle hours so I was super anxious about whether or not to change. As a safety precaution I saved the old fluid just in case the transmission slipped then I could pour back in the old fluid. Yellow plug was in the pan so it was original fluid. Pleased to say all works well, no slipping and shifts feel more solid. Appreciate all your videos! Power steering fluid is next!

    Good how to video.
    Just a few things to add:
    I found it much easier if you plan on putting a drain plug in, just drill a hole in the pan while it is installed and let it drain out there first. Makes it so much easier to get the pan down without making a mess.
    Also, it is ideal to weld the plug in place to prevent leaking, but not everyone has access to a welder.
    The locktite you used is OK, but ideally use some anaerobic sealant around the threads to prevent leaking.
    Dorman also makes a pan with a built in drain plug for about $35 that is a good deal.
    I see you did it, but the gasket is reusable, no need for a new gasket or any sealant.
    One thing to note as well, Mercon LV tends to be a little darker, even when "fresh".

    Mercon LV gets “dirtier” quicker than Mercon V so it may look worse but not necessarily be worse. Also to help lessen the potential mess from the pan drop, use a suction to suck out as much fluid through the dipstick hole beforehand.

    It’s important to note that the transmission fluid can also be partly drained at the hose connections for the condenser. Don’t forget that trans fluid needs to be cooled just like any other fluid in and around the engine. So if you are doing a condenser replacement don’t forget to catch any trans fluid that spills out so you can replace it with the same amount, or better yet, do a trans fluid change while working on the AC system.

    After I owned a 2006 Grand Marquis from my brother, the first maintenance I did was 4 years ago after changing the engine oil was gear oil, but I put Mercon LV oil by mistake and it was the fault of the owner of a parts store in determining the correct oil, at that time I dont understand a lot about cars, the strange thing is that the gearbox works great and I have not had any problems so far and I have driven more than 60,000 kilos,and there are other owners who use the same oil on their 98 and 2002 vehicles, thinking that it is better and newer, I am really confused about how such a simple mistake to happen Even the owner of the parts store 😂🤣

      it would be overkill to change the filter twice that close together unless you had a good reason (like the new filter getting filled up with gunk). What I was saying is after you do the pan drop and filter change you can do another drain and refill through the drain plug any time you feel like it. Now I typically do one pan drop with filter change every 2 years, and on the in between years I do a drain and refill through the drain plug. Hope that helps

Note I did the flush using 16.5 qt of motor craft LV transmission fluid. Also the yellow plug was found at the bottom of my pan so leads me to believe that my Town Car hasn’t had a transmission service in 384,000 miles scary right but now I can say I dodged the bullet for sure. Just use Valvoline Mercon V or LV depending on year. I’ll sum this up.
      MotoCraft isn’t bad but Ford doesn’t make their own oils. It’s contractacted out. Has been since like the 60s. As for Royal Purple it’s honestly not that good. Project Farm has done reviews on it. And you want the Mercon V spec. If it doesn’t say it on the box it’s probably a no go.
      -Oil: Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-20 or 5W-30, 5W-20 is factory and a better bet for MPG and getting oil to the top faster. Don’t put heavier oils in. (Natural Gas stuff can’t be beaten for the most part and available cheap at Walmart).
      -ATF/Power Steering: Valvoline Mercon V or LV (Valvoline is like the number 1 go to for ATF).
      -Brake Fluid : Prestone DOT 3 Synthetic (Cheap and good quality, but avoid DOT 4 it doesn’t last as long and brake fluid gets corrosive as it ages which is why BMW like to call for a flush).
      -Coolant: Any 50/50 Long Life usually Red in Color not green. (Color is important, Red means long life. Most service vehicles will use it).
      -Diff: Just a good quality spec oil. The stuffs heavy. That’s all it needs to be.
      Pretty much all you need to know you’ll be set. Forget Royal Purple and AMSOIL. Your just over paying. The stuff above is good quality if not better for way less.
      Filters I almost always try to stick to the dealer unless it’s a Air Filter. A few reasons some of these aftermarket ones will literally crumble or have no or poor quality anti drain back valves or bad gaskets. (2004+ you want a Mercury Maurauder Air Filter, theirs a slight difference and the P71s used that Air Box even though I believe the regular Crown Vic Air Filter still fits).
      Spark plugs I usually try to figure out who the car manufacturer contracted to make the plugs. Lol it’s not MotoCraft. Otherwise I have actually been partial to a good quality Fine Wire Iridium Spark Plug made by AutoLite.
      As for gas. Well todays cars can benefit from 93 especially if it’s European or Turboed. In a P71 it’s a gigantic waste. That car dosent care if it’s 87 or 100. Lol it drinks fast. It wouldn’t hurt to run a tank of 93 for injection cleaning etc. Otherwise forget it.
      Hope that helps you! For most my cars I go this general route. The brands I listed just have it nailed. Even my BMW M2 same brands but wouldn’t use AutoLites on one and obviously the spec changes EX: Chevy uses Dexron, but I still go Valvoline on the ATF.
      Long post but when I hear Amsoil, Royal Purple, Motul etc. I’m just like why!?!?! Royal Purple is only purple cuz it’s dyed. Lol. Extra $20 for that. Also it does poorly in cold climates.

    Is the drain plug part optional?

    • @WJHandyDad
      @WJHandyDad  2 года назад

      of course but I find it to be a wonderful addition because it makes changing much cleaner and easier and also allows for easy changes between pan drops and filter changes if you want to do more frequent changes (like I do)

  • @fordresurrectionest9556
    @fordresurrectionest9556 2 года назад

    A drain plug is not useful in this car. Why? Because the pan only holds 4 quarts. A full service requires 14 quarters. So you're not making a dent.

    • @WJHandyDad
      @WJHandyDad  2 года назад +2

      I respectfully disagree. Have you read the Ford service manual? They specify a pan drop and filter change. They do not specify a "flush" of all the fluid. Yes, a pan drop only changes about 25-33% of the fluid, but that is what they specify. I did the drain plug for multiple reasons: 1. less mess when changing and 2. the ability to change out a couple extra quarts in between pan drops. I do not regret the decision at all and have been installing drain plugs on all of my transmissions whenever I drop a pan.

      I haven't tested theirs to see how accurate it is, but that range would be perfect for most jobs. You probably want to get a 1/2" drive one as well so you can torque lug nuts and other things that require >80 ft-lb of torque

    Can you retrofit a 2007 CVPI with the transmission pan from a 2010 - 2011 to get a drain plug?

    • @Titans2138
      @Titans2138 4 года назад

      Idk but you can buy a new pan for like $20 that will fit. It's a good idea. I figured why get a pan with a plug since I have to drop the pan anyway to change the filter but it was sooo messy it's definitely worth it. It's probably cheaper than buying a drain pan that's 4' by 4' to catch everything anyway

    Question, I have a 2011 ford crown victoria, and no mechanic wants to change my transmission oil because they say that there is no history on the transmission oil change and because of that if they change the transmission fluid it could then slip gears, so my question to you is what do I do? I bought the filter and gasket from ford and I want to change the oil in the transmission, i took a look at the dipstick and its pink ,don't know now what I should do

    • @WJHandyDad
      @WJHandyDad  4 года назад +2

      the rumor exists that changing the transmission fluid can be bad in some circumstances. It sounds like your transmission fluid is in good shape if it is still pink. I can't say whether or not you should change yours. All I can say is I change mine frequently (per the Ford recommendation of every 2 years/24k miles) and I haven't had any problems.
