I just wanted to THANK you all for your loyalty and lovely comments! I have to confess, I started making these videos with my Mom (Ofelia) for myself and my children.
I know a lot of people don't get to pass down recipes or have the ability to learn to cook from their parents. I wanted to document our traditions so that I, my kids or my Grandchildren can see their Nani and learn directly from her.
Thank you all for joining us in the kitchen and being a part of our family. It is truly a blessing to be able to invite you all in and share our memories with you. She is your Mom as well, if you were here, she would treat you as if you were...
    Peace and Love, Maria

I enjoyed your video so much, Maria, especially the talk and laughter between you and your mother. What a wonderful treasure you are creating for your family to always have as a reference in the future. I would give anything in the world to have the same from my grandmother. But personal computers were not even around in her days. And I doubt very highly she would have let me film her. It was hard enough to get a photo of her. lol I've already added a broom handle to my shopping list. How long does it need to be cut, like your mom's. It looks like about 12" or so. Is that about right. Will you ask your mother if they need to be sanded afterwards or can I use it as is, after cutting? Thanks again! :)

Love you two, so sweet. My mother never liked to cook, though she does do it. Cleaning was her thing and still is. She was sure meat had to be cooked to old leather. If it wasn't for cookbooks - before the net- I would never had learned how. I really enjoy seeing parents sharing their secrets with folks. I have just the skillet for you tortillas. Thanks so much.

I love your mom. As a young kid I lived in a Mexican neighborhood. Skinny, blonde, and of German descent I was apparently under nourished in the eyes of all my friends mothers and grandmothers. I got stuffed everywhere I went as a result. In fact I had to run by certain houses because if any Abuelitas saw me they'd drag me in and feed me even if I'd already been stuffed a block away. Well, I never got fat and there's nothing like Mexican cooking and hospitality. For my first few years I thought I'd grow up to be a Mexican. Well, my taste buds did. Congratulations to both of you and that lucky little kid I heard in the background.

Thank you for refreshing my memory of my grandma making tortillas. She never use measuring spoons either, it was always with the hand or fingers (for the lard) I'm tired of the store bought tortillas. She taught me how to make green chili and beans and of course tortillas. She said I would never go hungry because of the things taught me. My wife and friends love my green chili and pork. She made hers on a coal and wood stove. THANK YOU for sharing. UHENIO ALVAREZ

I was HOOKED on Old Ell Paso (they are good but SOOO UNHEALTHY) which is why I wanted to try to make my own. I've watch more how to make flour tortillas videos than I care to count for weeks now. Well, I guess today was my lucky day!!! I started searching again and came across this video. Something about your mom's energy grabbed me through the screen!! After watching 3 times I decided to give it a try and they are AMAZING!!! The only change I made was using coconut oil because I didn't have any shortening. They are SOOOO DARN GOOD!!! Thank you guys so much!! I am over the moon 😊😊😊😊😊💞💞💞💞💞

I found if I use just little more then 3 tables spoons of the shortening they stay soft longer and warm up nicely. But then I make a lot more tortillas, I've got a big family. Thanks sharing and for the walk down memory lane. 😊

Excellent! I was able to use this video and make perfect tortillas on the very first try! And I'm Irish! ;) I do love to cook though and I do lots of bread and baking. I used real lard for mine because I have a tamale recipe and the dough just doesn't have the same feel when mixing if anything else besides lard is used. as +Ann Hutcheson says, it's not a lot and moderation is the key! I don't use hydrogenated oils at all and I make all our bread and bread products as well as any other products that have hydrogenated oils in them. I noticed that you asked Mom if the bread was rising while it rested, and I thought I would offer my opinion/experience to explain in case someone would expect it to rise like a yeast dough. The resting period between mixing and forming when using a baking powder or baking soda dough doesn't necessarily rise the dough (it can expand a little but it doesn't need to) but the rest time does give time for the gluten to strengthen. SO, in case someone watching the recipe was waiting for it to rise, they will know they can move on. Mine rested for 15 minutes and it was perfect. Great recipe. Thanks Mom! :)

Gail Bender I'm SO glad it worked out for you! My mom is amazing, I'm still afraid to try the chicken and rice, but I request it all the time!

I wish I had filmed my mom! This is sooo precious that you have this video. My mom went to Heaven 22 years, 6 months, 30 days, and 8 hours ago and I miss her sooo much. That's how I cook, no measuring, using my hands. I cry when my food doesn't taste the same as hers and I wrack my brain trying to remember exactly what she did, I learned by watching. The DOWEL as rolling pin. Yes that is what she had. My mom's were perfect circles and we'd eat them right off the camal, she had to make 2 or 3 dozen. Thank You! for sharing a almost lost art and your lovely mother!!
