I liked 64 South Park too. I used to love that game. Playing as Cartman and shooting people with the gun that made them sing was way too funny at the time.
I was living in Oklahoma City when the Casa Bonita episode aired. I grew up in Denver and had recently visited. During the visit, we went to Casa Bonita. I kept the menu. So while all of my friends were quoting that episode, I was able to whip out the menu and tell them "its a real place!"
I feel like the only person on the planet who legitimately likes South Park Rally. I loved it as a teenager. I think it's got a really cool concept that shakes up the traditional kart racer due to the way each race has a different goal and even the normal lap races don't go in typical circles, utilizing an unusual checkpoint system with big, open maps. It was really fun. I wish you'd have talked about Chef's Luv Shack though, that game was great, too. The FPS game was certainly the weakest of the three.
The reason Matt and Trey say that they didn't have much input on the console games is because, to them, they didn't. Their roles on those games were more of consultants, not producers. While they are receptive to ideas and input, everything they're accustomed to doing will always be more or less dominated by them. They're showrunners, writers, directors, the talent, everything. I grew up with all 3 N64 Southpark games. As being young kid with only a few games, I gotta say, I’m glad I had them. To this day, I still play all 3 once in a while. Being an adult with 200 plus games, that’s gotta say something. I love them all, especially Chef’s Luv Sack. It’s the perfect “short” Mario Party.
It's crazy finding out that some of these legendary games are only what they are now because of cut content, tight deadlines, and conflicting ideals. Like, what would they be if the original plan had worked?
I actually wanted to work for Acclaim when I was a kid, since it was like a half hour drive from my home lol Funny enough, the college I went to bought their motion capture equipment when they filed for bankruptcy.
I remember that South Park 64 game! That game kept flopping back and forth between something really cool and something poor. That game really could have made use of just a couple more months of development. It had plenty of great ideas, but so many issues that just felt rushed out the door.
The leg work Parker and Stone put into the latest games themselves is valiant; literally precedent-worthy regarding how all 'licensed' properties should be handled when turning them into games
South Park rally was fine. It's just a N64 racing game with all kinds of wacky stuff. It's not like most other N64 racing games were the pinnacle of innovation.....
It's a shame "Rally" didn't work out. Kart racers may be kind of a cliche way to make a quick buck with an IP, but there's a reason for that: they're fun. Can you imagine what it would be like if Ubisoft were to take another crack at it, this time with over twenty years of material to work with and Matt and Trey's blessing? There's so much potential. Just think of the vehicles... Kenny's Go Go Action Bronco. Mr. Garrison's IT. Timmy's wheelchair. Cartman's stock car, or maybe his hippie drill. The Member Berries' Model T. The best South Park game at that time was Chef's Luv Shack on Playstation. No one remembers it. The problem with it is that it was a Quiz Show with mini games so the replay value goes down after the fourth play because you memorised all the answers.
