  • We have MCU galactic teams, but Marvel needs the street level Avengers. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is so concerned with world-ending cosmic threats, that we've forgotten abut plain old crime. Daredevil, Spider-Man, Falcon, and more--Marvel needs to show them on the streets, taking care fo the evil that falls through the cracks.

    #MCU #Streetlevel #avengers
The Marvel cinematic universe has been giving us a lot recently: magic, the multiverse, time travel, space, cosmic gods, aliens gods, actual gods, cameos, and so much more.
And that’s awesome, it's a great time to be a Marvel fan.
But you know what is the one thing that is missing for me in the MCU right now?
    Crime.
Yeah actual crime, as is people doing bad and illegal things on the street level. And the only way to stop those bad guys are crime fighters.
Heroes who are not so overpowered that they can now only deal with Avengers level threats. But rather street level heroes and vigilantes.
Crime fighters who deal with smaller scale threats, fighting the endless war against crime, greed and the darkest facets of human nature.
Heroes who are the only hope for the little guy.
That’s what I have been missing with the MCU’s Spider-Man.
I love No Way Home, it’s amazing, but after spider-man saved the universe, we really need to go back to basics.
Bring Marvel’s friendly-neighborhood hero…back to the not so friendly neighborhood.
Marvel recently announced the Daredevil disney plus show, there’s also the Echo spin off in the works, maybe Hawkeye will get another season. So that’s a good sign that there’s going to be more focus on the street level side of the MCU.
But it’s too few and far between. There’s no clear distinction between the heroes, and the type of threats they face.
And many heroes who are crime fighters in the comics are transformed into superpowered superheroes in the MCU.
It sort of feels like Marvel kinda forgot about the street-level stories.
I can’t be the only one that is missing this [clip]. We need more of this [clip].
So let’s take a look at how Marvel can fix their much needed street-level stories, and add more crime fighters in the MCU.
But first, we need to examine the problem Marvel has with adapting crime fighters.
The most recent and obvious exemple is the translation of Moon Knight from comics to live action.
Comics Moon Knight is as street-level as you can get. He’s a brutal and seriously messed up vigilante who primarily fights criminals.
At times Moon Knight deals with supernatural threats, but even those tend to be on a smaller scale. That allows Moon Knight’s stories to remain dark, gritty and grounded.
He doesn’t have a magical suit and he has no powers given to him by a god.
Say the following like you are so tired of making the comparison: And yeah, Moon Knight is sort of like Batman.
Which is the same as saying that Homelander is like Superman.
If you know Moon Knight, then you know that the similarities between him and Batman are extremely surface level.
Moon Knight’s vigilante antics make him into one of the most fascinating crime fighters in the comics.
Yet, almost all of these elements were completely changed for the MCU adaptation.
The show itself was good, I enjoyed it a lot. And it got a lot of things right, like Marc’s DID.
However, we can’t ignore the drastic changes that the MCU made to Moon Knight. The character was refitted to fit into a supernatural direction.
Marvel likely chose to make the change, so that Moon Knight can join the Midnight Sons.
A team of anti-heroes who deal with supernatural threats.
Something we theorized on the channel a while back.
And that’s fine. It’s their property, so Marvel can take whatever creative license they want with their characters.
Though, it becomes a problem if every crime fighter now has superpowers and deals with Avenger level threats.
What does that leave for the smaller scale underbelly?

Another thing that makes the 'street level' actions more interesting (in my opinion) is that they also tend to be more personal. As a character, I was far more invested in Wilson Fisk than I ever was in Thanos, for example. The struggles of the heroes also tend to be more relatable, making them more human. There needs to be a balance between the small and big threats.

I literally want the Punisher back as Jon Bernthal. This actor is just a fucking talented badass. I also really want to see him team up with other street heroes again. Maybe also in an Avengers-Event (like the fight in Endgame, where literally everyone comes to help). Jon Bernthal is just perfect bro, just perfect, to the last minute details

I 100% agree about Bernthal. He has a thing he can do just with his eyes that would twist my heart into knots every single time he did it. You could SEE how much emotional pain he was feeling, just like... all the time. Every time he'd cross the line and you'd start to think 'holy shit dude, this is too much', he'd do that look and suddenly you'd remember that yes, it's too much, but he's coming from a perspective skewed by so much grief and pain that there's no way he's going to be able to see that. Totally separate from the violence, I think his story is one that the kinds of writers that Disney is employing right now could do wonders with. Honestly, give me that story, the story of grief and despair written in blood with the delicate touch and emotional brutality that Marvel has proven capable of in stuff like Moon Knight and WandaVision, and I'd be just fine if it wasn't an absolute gorefest.

I remember when the Punisher season 1 dropped the same year as Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The IDEA of the series was nice, and it had nice moments in the first episode when it focused on Clint's PTSD, but the rest of the series was unwatchable slapstick garbage. Tried too hard to emulate Matt Fraction's Hawkeye run but failed to realize that doesn't work if our universe's Hawkeye just went on a 5-year long rage-fueled murder spree. Half the show focuses on Echo, the Yelena return plotline was ruined by being rushed, and Kingpin is practically a completely different character from when we last saw him. I just totally hated the show. And I wanted to like it! I've always felt Clint deserved more respect! But that show was NOT it.
Also, I forgot all about Kate Bishop. Probably cuz the show did too. Kate was fine but absolutely everything involving her family was unbearable. I don't care about her mom, the stepdad misdirect plotline is terrible and pointless, just ugh. Totally unnecessary. Kate could've been anyone she doesn't need to be some hacker heiress

I would love, love, love to see another Hawkeye, with Kate Bishop fully taking on the mantle. Jeremy Renner's in pretty rough shape right now and although I'm sure he will recover for the most part, I don't think it's realistic that he'll ever get back to the point of being able to do the stunts/action he's done before. He could use this in his acting, making it feel very real. I can imagine a plot where Clint Barton gets attacked by an entity or organization, and Kate Bishop seeks revenge. She is further tutored and guided by Clint but has to do all the hard work completely on her own. It could make for a really good story, with Renner using his real-life trauma to inform and enrich his performance.

There's something about the street level stories that hold more weight than the world-ending ones where aliens invade. I guess because the human element is there, and you can tell some great stories just because of human nature. It's more relatable which makes it more compelling in my eyes. Now that Spider-Man is no longer an Avenger and Daredevil is getting his own show, we can get some more of those street level stories in the MCU. It's been my main gripe for years, how we hardly got any street level stories and every hero is essentially an Avenger.

Ever since the Netflix series’ ended, I have maintained the belief that a Disney+ Heroes for Hire series would do very well. The basic premise is that Misty Knight has quit the force due to ideological differences regarding powered people and how they are being treated by the police when they are vigilantes or bystanders, and how the police are ill equipped to deal with powered criminals. With financial backing from Luke Cage and the investigative talent of Jessica Jones, Misty founds Heroes For Hire, which is advertised as a kind of dispatcher for the burgeoning street level hero population, but the show would be structured like a crime drama. The original Defenders would have limited guest starring roles, as the focus would be on new characters such as White Tiger, Rampage, Ghost Rider, Night-thrasher and others. The show would then take the best well received characters and spin them off into their own limited Disney+ series and specials.

I watch these videos mainly because of how well put together and thought out they seem. While a good number of times I agree with the content, this is one of the few times I don't. I found the bigger stuff to be refreshing from the ordinary street mob boss type crime. Sure the MCU was mostly cosmic with Phase 4, but the entire history of superhero movies altogether has been mostly ordinary street level crime bosses. Also, I don't think a hero's potential or ceiling should be determined by the threats they face. It limits them from what they could become. That's not to say no street level stuff. But in hindsight that stuff has been done way more across the superhero genre.

Yea I agree. Same with Luke Cage. And in season 2 of LC that was when they pretty much rewrote Danny and made him more like his comic book version (in other words he developed as a character off screen). They showed that Finn Jones actually can be a good Iron Fist if they give him good material to work with. That episode was awesome and I feel like we were eventually gonna get a Heroes for Hire series with Danny and Luke. Not to mention season 2 of IF was a vast improvement and, like you said, I really wanted to see where they were going from there. Hopefully Marvel/Disney gives them the Daredevil treatment but not to the fullest extent (aka bringing them back and continuing or soft rebooting their stories, not making them a joke like they did DD).

In season 2 the fight choreography and characters were written much better. Not to mention it was only 10 episodes instead of 13 since 13 made it seem like it was dragging. I was excited for where they were going after the season but rebooting his story for the MCU like you said wouldn’t be a bad idea either. I want to get away from power creep and do more layers of power amongest heros and villians. Have stronger villians use and play less strong ones like pawns while the heros of all power levels team up every once and awhile. Freshen things up by being more story oriented

Lots of good points. There's quite a bit to unpack here.
First, I completely agree that Marvel needs more street level threats and that people like Thor, Captain Marvel, etc... are not very well suited for that type of story.
Second, more Moon Knight would be high on my list. Now, I don't think that he necessarily needs to be depowered. Yes, he curbstomps the only regular thugs he fights while he has his powers. However, Luke Cage is bulletproof, knifeproof, etc... and that didn't at all take away from interesting street level stories with him. The original Moench run of Moon Knight comics was amazing, and it certainly could work with him being depowered, but I also liked the version with armor that was bulletproof and healed him, a small degree of super strength, and making crescent darts/escrima sticks/grapples/etc... materialize in his hand.
Third, a better version of Iron Fist would be great. Now, this would likely have one foot in fantasy with his backstory. Actually, it would be a good fit for crossing over with Moon Knight with the heroes who have some magic-based powers and operate on the street. An origin story that is more linear than the first series would be nice. For instance, actually showing more of Kun'Lunn, seeing Danny train, and showing the battle with Shou-Lao the Undying would be good. Also, for there to be more of an understanding of the legacy of the Iron Fist is needed. There was a video in the Iron Fist show where Orson Randall was in an all-black Iron Fist costume and fought some soldiers, but that was it. For the costume to be ceremonial garb that other Iron Fists have worn would help cement the character as a costumed hero.
Fourth, more Punisher could be good. I haven't read many Punisher comics. I don't think his strength is in solo stories. That isn't to say that there aren't good Punisher stories, I just think he works better as a guest star in other heroes' stories. He's so realistic that it seems to work well in other stories, but not as good solo. For instance, a highly decorated soldier losing his family to crime and then exterminating criminals is extremely believable. However, when he crosses over with heroes like Spider-Man and Dardevil it becomes far more interesting. His appearance in season 2 of Daredevil was how the character really shines. Nothing against his own show, but there are lots of action movies with skilled combatants using military weapons to kill bad guys (not even that action movies are bad, they can be great; in a universe with superheroes, aliens, magic, etc... it's not really what I want stories to focus on).
Finally, better street level villains are an absolute must. Kingpin is brilliantly cast, but there need to be more. Owl, Jackal, Mister Fear, the Enforcers, the Trapster, Hammerhead, the Chameleon (probably with the special belt like the 90's cartoon rather than full disguises like the Lee/Ditko comics), Steel Serpent, Raol Bushman (referenced in Moon Knight, but not shown), Jack Frost, Grey Gargoyle, Whiplash, Scorpion, Ringmaster and the Circus of Crime, Molten Man, the Prowler (who was sort of in Spider-Man: Homecoming), Tarantula, Puppet Master, the Mad Thinker, Purple Man, Matador, Gladiator (the Daredevil villain, not the member of the Shiar Imperial Guard), Cobra, Jester, the Living Laser (the original version with the wrist-mounted lasers, not the versions that was literally a living laser), Whirlwind, and Radioactive Man (might be too much of a standard villain for street level). Also, there are some street level villains that could work, but might be too cheesy without some major adjustments (Porcupine, the Melter, Unicorn, and Stilt Man).

Yeah totally. One thing about the original Marvel, Spidey never joined the Avengers because he didn't want to. It kind of made him seem more real. They had some meeting 15 or so years ago give or take, and they had a big discussion about why Spidey should or shouldn't join the Avengers in the way all the biggest DC characters joined the Justice League. Personally I think it took away from his originality a bit. Also, another street level thing I'd really like to see - Jamie Madrox (Multiple Man), Guido Carosella and crew as private investigators who use their mutant powers when they need to (from the X-Factor Investigations comics). Thanks for the video.

Street-level heroes aren't just found in DC or Marvel, there are tons of superhero genres with street-level heroes. The best example of this, would be Ladybug from Miraculous Ladybug. She's someone who deals with not only world-ending events, but also, is takes on street-level crime in Paris, not unlike her basis, Spider-Man. If you think about it, both Ladybug and Spider-Man have relatively similar traits. They're both teens that struggle with everyday life, but at the same time, they use the powers they were given, to protect their home cities. And of course, they both also happen to have a thing for partners who dress up like cats.

I’d like to see the Spidey college trilogy & other street-level shows lead to Kingpin as the big bad. You can have him pay or make deals with Mr. Negative, Scorpion, & Black Cat (who switches sides & reveals the truth to Peter later). Human Torch, Felicia, & Yuri Watanabe would be a great supporting cast.
Maybe Fisk can become Mayor & hire Silver Sable as his security to protect him from a vengeful Hobgoblin in a detective whodunnit mystery who could be Kingsley or they could pull a twist & make it his son, Richard Fisk. That way all the antagonists are linked to him in some way until it leads to a Heroes for Hire gang war crossover ft. Spidey, Kate, Echo, & the Defenders taking down NY’s top mob bosses.

This seems like spider-man to me. I have a 5 year old and watch a lot of the kids spider-man shows and that’s kind of all they focus on is street level threats…rhino robs a hot dog stand, or doc oc steals vibranium from the museum to use it to make herself the most powerful person in the city or world. That was the spider-man I knew growing up, as I was just a casual fan. Spider-man would need to be the leader of this movement for Disney to be able to make sense of it, and follow thru with it and put out big budget films focused around this. I don’t see it happening, one they don’t have control over the spider-man movies, sony does… I see them using the tv shows for street level crime stories, and trying to continue to go bigger with the movies. And using the tv shows as a stepping stone to write bigger roles in motion pictures for the ones they see will be worth it, which will also make that super hero have increasing powers. At least if they continue down the path they are on.
