Wow I forgot how good this guy was. Over time my memory of him became just a stiff tall dude that has a solid mid range chip shot, I totally forgot about this array of post moves. Had no idea he was that quick and nimble
Love Rik Smits, I got to meet him in Indy the first summer he was drafted and joined the Pacers, he was young and humble and worked his butt off to become one of the best centers in the NBA during the 90s
Obviously you didn't look at all his starts. He averaged 26.6 minutes per game for his career. Probably due to the feet and leg issues he dealt with. He averaged 18.5 points per game in 30.2 minutes per game in the 94-95 season. If he played Ewing minutes his stats would be around there.
That was a nice trio that the Pacers had with Reggie-Rik-Mark Jackson, and then they got better when they added Jalen rose during the Larry Bird coach era.
One of these highlights had the Indy car sound effect playing, took me right back to my time in Indianapolis in the 90s. May was a blast then, with The 500 and the Pacers consistently making deep playoff pushes, as the warm weather came back, great memories...
please tell me if you know that the 1st game for dirk nowitzki was vs the rockets when they still had hakeem olajuwon and in 84 when the mavs faced the rockets it was the 1st game for hakeem olajuwon
In the 80's, like before and after, everyone wanted that dominant 7 footer, but during that time there were some "mega-tall" players say 7-3 or taller, that were just hindered by their height athletically and not well-rounded centers. The only exception was Sampson at 7-4 but injuries took his career out early. Smits at 7-4 really surprised everyone with his coordination and athleticism. He had great finesse for his height, and going up against the O'Neals and Ewings of the game he had to make the most of that height and did it quite well and consistent for over a decade.
"He destroyed me every time. Oh my God!" - Shaquille O'Neal on Rick Smits Once Smits got the ball in his hands, he was usually unstoppable (some games he just didn't show up for, usually due to his chronic foot problem), that can't be said about hardly any players. And yet, I don't think anyone would put him in the top 20 of centers all-time. Definitely underrated.
All the born-yesterday kids of the current era who act like the wheel is being invented for the first time don't realize EVERYTHING already happened before.
I know! He did seem to play his best against the Knicks, but come on...2 out of every 3 highlights here are against them. He had great plays, huge games against every team.
Truly one of a kind. To have such excellent footwork, accuracy and that feather touch, to go along with range at 7'4" was just freakish. No one could stay with that spin move! Such a shame about his chronically bad feet, or he'd have had a legit shot at the Hall of Fame.
according to certain people the average rik smits created struggles for legend shaquille o'neal and in the 94 and 95 playoffs the pacers went 6-4 vs the magic and in 00 the pacers lost 4-2 to the lakers with 38 ish points and 16 ish rebounds from finals mvp shaquille o'neal
the best foreign players ever are still #1 legend hakeem olajuwon a DISTANT #2 star patrick ewing #3 dominique wilkins #4 dirk nowitzki and #5 steve nash
Excellent footwork.

Those Pacer teams were so good, such a great roster with Jackson, Miller, McKey, Davis, and Smits. They were great players.
Person!?
And Detlef
I remember the 1995 series well between the Knicks and Pacers. Smits was consistently outplaying Ewing in that series and giving him that work!
please tell do you know that on 6-5-94 the knicks won 94-90 and got 7 assists 24 points 5 blocks and 22 rebounds from star patrick ewing

my favorite pacer
please tell me if you know why the pacers traded alex english
no idea, not following NBA closely@@youtuber3328
The Dutch Shaq! Seeing his highlights makes me wonder why he didn't average 25 pts every game.

Bad coaching
Ball had to be in reggies hands

He played low minutes due to nerve damage in his feet because his shoes were too small as a kid.
this is for us Dutch Pacer fans awesome

i miss watching rik and those guys playing.

7'4', great footwork, could palm the basketball easily, nice mid-range shot, and he wasnt a twig. Truly one of the underrated players in history
Dirk definitely studied him!
please tell me if you know that the 1st game for dirk nowitzki was vs the rockets when they still had hakeem olajuwon and in 84 when the mavs faced the rockets it was the 1st game for hakeem olajuwon
the 11 mavs were nowhere near as elite as the 94 and 95 rockets because dirk nowitzki was nowhere near as elite as hakeem olajuwon

Ricky, you was a problem. Thanks for the memories, mate.

Nice work on video Brittanie GO PACERS
Nice, sharp, consistent video quality.
He is a great shooter too. Unblockable.
Rik had a game in the mid 90s where he torched the admiral and Hakeem where the clips?!
I know! He did seem to play his best against the Knicks, but come on...2 out of every 3 highlights here are against them. He had great plays, huge games against every team.
Smits was totally unstoppable in the low post.
Damn i forgot how good he was...he actually was really good
came here bcoz of Dirk tweet 😂😂😂
Oh yeah? What did Dirk say?
Nobody talks about him but he was the first over 7' with this finesse skill set. Not yao, not dirk, not porzingis, not wemby.

I’m shocked Holland didn’t produce more Basketball Players after Rik given how tall Dutch People are in general😮😮😮😮
Super
He was dirk before dirk was dirk and a bit of kareem mixed in maybe
Still have nightmares from this dudes vs The Bulls 😂. Rik Smiths will be dominating today's NBA easy!
The Dunkin Dutch Man
I was at many of the home games
Prozingis is his modern version
He kinda looks like Nowitzki
Or u got that backwards.......rik was NBA while dirk was still in Germany
The Flying Dutch Men
Walton ny champ
DORK NORWINSKI .
I'm here cuz of Melo & Kid Mero hehehe
Sounds incorrect, however necessary:
Larry BIRD DRIVE, auf Dutch/ Deutsch.
Ok i see now dirk got his game from smits ok his post moves
Kinda plays like Duncan
Dirk Nowitzki in a paint scorer. Hahaha.

the 00 01 and 02 lakers weren't as elite as the 94 and 95 rockets because shaquille o'neal wasn't quite as elite as hakeem olajuwon
