As a person that didn’t play the game I see the beauty and transition of Joel and Ellie’s relationship. It progressed really well for me. It was the small things that showed the bond for me.
I also did. She is definitely his kid. You don't commit at least 30 murders in a sequence for a coworker.
I think that as a player you feel more because it actually you playing and been the characters.
Pedro and Bella were fantastic, things didn't have to be told because it was all over their face. The affection for each other.
I agree that a lot of reactors/commentators have missed the subtle details that showed how bonded they were becoming. It was a slow and steady progression but there were even little things very early on like Joel immediately crawling over to Ellie when he realized where she was crouched in the museum scene after he reloaded, him staying up all night when she voiced concerns that they would be found while camping, him telling her to look at him and reassuring him that she would be okay when they had crashed the car and were being shot at.....there really were a LOT of small signs that I think people ignored or maybe didn't notice. And they ramped up over time. Also, I think Pedro's facial acting throughout the show really demonstrated how his care for her was developing....I think a lot about the single tear that dripped down his face when he'd been stabbed and thought she left him. Having rewatched all the episodes, it was all really clear to me.
I think it can be hard to pick up on subtle things when you're watching the first time, so maybe some people will come to appreciate the development of their relationship more if they rewatch the season.
Its different when you play the game for hours, there is a lot of talk between them that you just hear while you are playing. Either way they did a great job, in some ways better that the game, acting for example, the game and their actors created the scenes, but using real people made them better
@@soemmasays i noticed how ellie stays by his right side when they were with henry and sam who they considered 'danger' because they were strangers or walking around an unknown place so she can hear for him and protect him but switches to his left to make conversation easy when she deems they're safe which i don't know if it was done intentionally but i thought it was a really sweet gesture regardless.
As a non player, I saw all the affection they had for each other in their faces. It doesn't seem rushed or superficial at all.
I've played the game and still felt Show Ellie and Joels relationship progressed beautifully.
I agree. And i think that scene where joel says ‘its not time that did it’ solidified it.
Honestly, as someone who played the game I'm pretty sick of my fellow players and some of their takes. A 9 hour show which adapts the key story of the game is never gonna have the same weight to someone who played as that character for 15 hours (as a rough estimate), and struggled and fought to make the story progress themselves. You could argue more episodes were needed, which is fair, but I think a lot of people who played the game were expecting their feelings while playing to be replicated and that just was never gonna happen.
EXACTLY!!!
Exactly, and they mixed game and TV show, here they didn’t do it but others do.
He sees more Ellie and Joel and love built in the game because as you said , being all night playing, of course the perception is different.
3:28 okay after the 'Diva Cup' observation I'm gonna catch y'all up.
when you PUSH out a baby you have to Strain from your lower muscles groups, from Front to Back. so while She was struggling with the infected she could of VERY well pushed out that baby. Muscles don't multitask, pushing or punching it's the same thing.😉😄
That’s definitely possible but ain’t no damn way in real life would’ve happened like that 😂 lol
@@soyjeffe__ I hope the hell not, who would want to give birth while being attacked by a ZOMBIE😂😂
@@soyjeffe__ Unless you can have babies you have no idea.
@@kaybouie1972 😂😂 very true though
@@soyjeffe__ Women push out babies without realizing they even pushed it out..especially some of us women who dont even know we are pregnant and never show signs, we can even bleed like if we have a normal period, its highly abnormal but yes this happens. Some of us strain, some pop right out, oh its entirely possible.
I think that your bias because you played the game, however as someone who has not played the game, I felt the love between the two characters build over the season. It definitely felt like a father trying to save his daughter.
Coworker?
The thing Marlene did wrong is she never told Ellie about the surgery, she never asked if she was ok with it or let her say goodbye to Joel if surgery is what she wanted. If Ellie had said she wanted the surgery to happen and told that to Joel and said her goodbyes he probably would have not gone all Terminator.
Yeah... Hopefully 😂
Joel’s no better for that same reason
@@LovedByYou what was he supposed to do? They would’ve shot him and killed Ellie anyway.
I mean their greeting was a flash bomb. The violence of Fedra, Firefly’s, David, Kathleen. It’s been 20 years what is this humanity they want Elle to sacrifice her one lifetime for? I’m not sure Elle would want to die. Riley talked about family to Elle. Find another way or no way.
and probably ends his life after.
The moral quandary of this is so, so fascinating.
Amanda!!!! Where have you been!
@@Core4VTReacts dude! I love you guys, and I watch everything you put out that I’m also watching, but I don’t watch a lot of the anime or foreign stuff…but I’m still here! Still wishing y’all so much success from Philly and happy to see y’all continue to get love on here from a bigger (and hopefully bigger and bigger) audience.

Not the "Zoboomafoo" hahahaha
I couldn’t disagree more, we’ve seen such a human, natural evolution of their relationship thst it makes this episode very believable
Not the same actress for Tess. The actor who plays her on the show is Anna Torv from Fringe. Unfortunately the actor for Tess, Annie Wersching died Jan 29.
😭😭😭💕 i can’t the kiss to jk at 25:40
was wondering if anyone was going to catch that lol
Oh I didn't know that was the voice actress for the game (haven't played it)! I just thought her casting as Ellie's mother was so spot on because she looks so much like Bella Ramsey! 😮
Ironically Bella looks more like the game actress then game character model
@@Andjelka99 now thinking about it, it might have been intentional!
Ashley Johnson Ellie in the game , the mother here
Troy Baker Joel in the game, James ( from David’s gang) here
The giraffe looked so good because it was a real giraffe. 😂
"Oh, that shit look good" (Giraffe)
The Giraffe is real, LMAO - they filmed with blue screen at the Ontario Zoo. What's really funny are the commenters in other videos and reviews saying the graphics on the giraffe were horrible"
Ellie might or might not of wanted to go through with the surgery if she was told that she would have to sacrifice her life for a cure to be made, but the fact that Marlene didn’t even ask Ellie what she wanted to do & was gonna send Joel on his way just like that without a goodbye after traveling across the U.S dealing with near death experiences & watching people die & bonding with each other. Marlene was selfish & just wanted a cure. Funny thing is nobody knew if the plan would work so why would Joel let that slide? A lot of people would’ve done the same thing Joel did
I agree that Marlene was selfish. Judging strictly by what I saw on the show, I don't think Ellie would have sacrificed herself. The whole time she was thinking her blood was the cure. She was making plans to live with Joel AFTER she finished her journey to the hospital. Therefore, I'm siding with Joel. He knew she didn't think she would need to give up her life for the cure.
I just wish he didn't like to her...but I understand. 🤷🏽♀️
One more episode before the finale, with just Joel and Ellie, would have helped some people understand Ellie's funk in the beginning of this episode. She wasn't doing the moody teenager thing; she was severely depressed and confused by her interactions with David.
They could have shown how the two made it through winter (no way those two walked through Colorado and Utah in winter!) Did Joel find an abandoned house in the woods? Did he have to take out a couple of Clickers while hunting for food? Did Ellie become lethargic? Did she start having nightmares? When winter broke, did they see any bears, cougars or buffalos? I would have loved to see a cranky bear just out of hibernation smack the crap out of a Clicker at some point during their journey to Utah😆
It actually shocks me people needed an extra episode for that. Like…. Seriously how many people lack emotional intelligence these days.
She was almost eaten / SA’d in a day. Henry and Sam was 3 months before that & her bestie died a month before that!
They used a real giraffe for the finale.
Highly disagree. It may feel that way because you had hours and hours of gameplay, but TV Joel actually showed more care for her earlier on.
By episode 4 they were connecting. Joel started answering her questions, he realized he accidentally scared her by telling her about people being dangerous and literally stood ground all night while she slept, his absolute concern for her mental well being after shooting Bryan in KC, him showing her how to use a gun properly, him ASKING her questions, the laughter at the pun.... That's all one episode. In episode 5 they were silently communicating through the Infected battle and he's sniping left and right keeping her safe. His terror after Sam attacks her and that all leads to his panic attacks in episode 6 where he confesses to Tommy his fears. Ellie's discomfort at Joel being back with Tommy because she's afraid she's not in his pack anymore. Her defense of Joel with Maria. Joel's final acceptance of her and the rifle lesson, telling her about the before times and football! Her fighting tooth and nail for her life, but also for Joel's. His determination to find Ellie after David. That's shit you do for the person you love most.
It's all there my guy, it's just in a shorter span of time.
y’all better keep an eye out on RJ. he’s way too perceptive and quick to say he’d kill a lifelong friend. 👀 ijs
It was Joel Wick! Crazy finale. Amazing analogy Tobi!
You felt closer to Ellie in the game cause you were playing as Joel and the big sections of gameplay when you're running around and they're talking to each other. You can't expect that in the TV show cause there's no gameplay. Even then they did pretty good
Ellie saved Joel and Joel saved Ellie.... no matter what Joel did I'm with him on this ❤️😭 I'm not ready for season 2
let's hope Joel learns to play golf until season 2 arrives 😭
It's a real Giraffe 🦒
Baby Ellie busted out of mama to help her fight the infected lady
My friend’s baby almost came out of her in the car. She made it to the elevator inside the hospital before the baby fell out of car. So it’s totally possible that delivery scene in the beginning is believable. She lucky she didn’t have Ellie in the woods
Man that 8.8 almost made me mad, but then you saved it by talking up the second game. :) loved your reactions, glad to be able to see it.
Great reaction y'all glad y'all channel building a lot bigger keep it up.i know exactly who that doctor is 😂.let's see how they play it out in the show next season
I agree. If they made this show like 12 episodes instead, they could have added so much more. Especially the moments of fighting for survival together against the infected.
Bro RJ cracks me up I stg 😭
If u watch interviews with bella and pedro, they developed a close friendship from their time together working on the show. That shows through in the later episodes. I can see why u think of it as more of a friendship than a parent and child, but she saves his life, so it does become more equal. Also, irl, bella sometimes feels like the adult and pedro the kid lol.
This show was excellent, as a non-video game player it exceeded my expectations.
Episode 1 10/10
Episode 2 10/10
Episode 3 7/10
Episode 4 9/10
Episode 5 10/10
Episode 6 9.5/10
Episode 7 8/10
Episode 8 10/10
Episode 9 10/10
As you can see from my scores I didn't like when the show took the focus off Joel and Ellie.
it's a real giraffe; saw the behind the scenes. 😉 oh, one of the nurses was the actress that voiced and mo-capped..........Abby!!!!! 😯🤯🤭
remember that they had three months after Kansas City traveling to Tommy's that we didn't see.
RJ I CAUGHT YOU GIVING THAT KISS TO JK 😂🤣
Stone Cold...The developer said that every person who has kids supported Joel's choice and everyone else thought he was wrong. I have 3 boys and I say the world can piss off if it comes down to my kids.
Fun fact one of the nurses in the operating room is played by Laura Bailey, who voices Abby in the second game.
I am so conflicted 😐 great reaction😊
It’s interesting to hear people interpret things so differently.
Great reactions guys
crazy thing is the giraffe is real like i was so surprised when i found that out and David wasn’t giving rapey vibes he was ACTUALLY going too so her demeanor is understandable but omg this episode was so beautiful and true to the game. i can’t believe it ended but it was fun watching this with you guys, i’m so excited for the next season considering I do love the second game a lot. Also I know I write too much LMAO but if i’m not mistaken marlene kinda does break the whole cure thing down but it’s explained way better in the audios things you find around the hospital and fun fact the nurse is actually Abby’s Actor. About the criticism I think it’s understandable but there’s a big difference just because in the game you have the time, you play with them for so long and have all the missions and in here they just need to summarize because it’s a series. I understand your point of view since im a hardcore fan but I feel like you want the show to be the exact same as the game and obviously that’s not going to happen since they are targeting the people who haven’t watched the game. I think the way they did it was great, those little details they added made their relationship build up in a normal way, about the episodes tho I agree with your friend because those episodes billy, riley were those details to make you understand Joel and Ellie’s relationship and riley episode was heavily needed because you don’t get much of a background about ellie except in left behind and that dlc makes you understand a lot more about ellie and why she does what she does but also those episode give the hint, metaphors etc about what’s coming with them in the next episodes, the future and to also make you understand better why Joel does what he does at the end
I cannot take Toby comparing watching this to fuckin 😭😭
This episode was excellent
I just wish Joel would’ve told her the truth.
Don't we all
i played the 3 games of tlou and i think everything in the show was shown PERFECTLY... 10/10 for me and im not even being biased.. if you watch the behind the scenes of the show, you will understand why some changes were made... and i also think the relationship between joel and ellie in the show was as beautiful as in the game, if you're too focused in comparing the show to the game all the time and saying how they skipped or changed some things, ofc its not gonna be enjoyable for you😭 they are two different masterpieces from the same source, you just gotta enjoy it and love it as how it is!
now we getting that 2nd season soon so be ready for another masterpiece.
It will be different I hope thanks God. Got to be different because the feeling of a gamer is different than a viewer
Have you watched Everything Everywhere All At Once yet? Because if not, I'd looooove to see you guys react to it!
^^^^
Yeeeessss! I'd love to see you guys cry 😂
literally the worst analogy lmaoooooooooo
what is the VT in your name?
Marlene wasn't big on keeping promises, was she?
How so? She kept Ellie safe for fourteen years, first by sending her to the most fortified area in the QZ (FEDRA military school) and then again stopping any Fireflies from shooting Ellie after she was found bitten. But yeah, she's eventually willing to break that promise because the cure takes priority in her mind over Ellie.
@@Zoidberryable She promised people things she never delivered. Like telling Ellie's Mom she would always take care of Her Child. Then trying to kill Her.
Guys have you watched/reacted to 지민 (Jimin) 'Set Me Free Pt.2' Official Teaser yet?
Core *4* but I haven't seen the dog in a HOT minute.
A little more Elle and Joel killing infected after episode 6 one more to build that relationship. I hear you! Great reaction!!
Thank you!
Family that kill together stay together?
Fire 🔥‼️
I don't have any other choice...I do
Try the “island” kdrama series I’ve been waiting for that to give a reaction video cause i like you’re reaction. Still waiting..
I agree with baby boy in blue....play the game again and then watch the show you will see that the building of the relationship did not change i luv the game of course and live the show! Neil is a great story teller...next season is gonna be just as intense...gamers waited 7 years for the second game and it was controversial to gamers and it will still be in the show...which is the beauty of the writing for the game and show!!! See next season!!!
The giraffe isn’t cgi
I enjoyed both mediums. I think they could’ve made better creative decisions for the show tho, because the pacing felt off at some points and it detracted from the emotional weight you feel in the game. 12 ep would’ve been perfect. Still overall happy with what we got
I am here for this commentary. While I loved the first season, I can certainly see the criticisms - especially from those of us who played the games. I just allowed for some room because I knew going in, nothing will compare for my love of the games. 🥰 Cheers, all! I enjoy your content so much.
AHHH THANK YOU KELLEY! Hope we see you for Season 2
@@Core4VTReacts I am not going anywhere! You all provide really great perspectives. I’ll be here for this and all of the other content you create for us! 😊
@@kelley5816 appreciate that!
I didn't play the game, and I have similar sentiments to Toby. I agree that Joel and Ellie's relationship could be developed a lot more, even before Episode 8. I wanted more things to have grown out of their relationship before he called her 'baby girl'. Not to say that I don't think their relationship developed well or at all, but I wished there was more throughout the episodes for me to feel a lot more for how Joel held her at the end of Episode 8 and how he wanted to save Ellie in Episode 9.
Bro in the middle, always complaining about this show. You are really wanting an exact game and show. On the show I thought it really showed their emotions to each other. And yes I played the game.
Sorry about that
@@Core4VTReacts don’t be sorry lol your opinion is totally valid , for some reason ppl in this game community take different views as personal attacks
Ppl who don’t understand nuance always assuming that anyone with constructive critique wants a carbon copy of the game
I sure am glad I never played the game, so I could enjoy the show for the masterpiece that it was instead of looking for stupid reasons to complain. The irony is, most reactors I've watched have said the exact opposite, that the buildup of their relationship was better in the show than the game.
23:20, that accent though.
guys. major spoiler for season 2 for people that haven't played.
I agree that they didn't show enough of Joel and Ellies closeness. They had all the pieces, but in the game we could see their relationship really blossom along their journey through random dialogue the characters had. It feels like the show missed out on that. We got all the big moments from the story and some cute moments between them, but I think their characters needed to have an episode or portion of an episode that really solidified their newfound relationship. I wish the last episode was longer and showed how their relationship changed after Ellie saved Joel.
I don't know. They definitely showed that he changed and that they are closer, but it just felt like a jump from an unstable/unsure relationship to a close one and we, as an audience, didn't get to see the in-between where they open up more and they share more great easy going moments together.
Agreed
-Tobi
The growth we see is at the end of episode 6. They are on much better terms and are much closer then, the problem is that we go a full 2 episodes with essentially 0 interaction between the two of them so it's easy to forget they are at that point where they have a much more developed relationship. As much as I enjoyed the story being filled in for episode 7, I think the placement of it is maybe a little awkward since it's so close to the end or that maybe it needed some other stuff paired with it.
were there any moments where they open up to each other in the first game? this is a genuine question, it's been so long since i played so i can't remember lol but i always felt like both of them were just so emotionally constipated and acts of love and care were subtle between them and thought the show took that approach as well so i never felt like anything was missing especially with how they made both of them so much more vulnerable than in the games.
@Anna Swartz it's been a long time for me too, but I think that Jurdane's comment above made a good point of them finally becoming close in episode 6, but not interacting much after. Even though they express more emotions in the show it was a lot of big changes in a short period of time. In the game their relationship was able to slowly grow and players were able to spend hours upon hours with Joel and Ellie. The show is only 9 episodes and it does a lot of focusing on other Characters during these episodes. So, there was less time for viewers to truly feel that connection between Joel and Ellie in the show compared to the game.
@Anna Swartz Episode 6 Joel finally makes that decision to open up to Ellie and they accept each other then he gets stabbed and can't take care of himself. So, we don't see that change in their relationship unfold. Then episode 7 focuses on Ellie and Riley, then episode 8 focuses on Ellie having to survive on her own (it does show that she cares for him because of the lengths she goes to save him, but we still don't have actual interactions between them) and then they reunited at the very end, and then episode 9 she's still going through her trauma, but they're all of a sudden really close and he's very open with her. It kind of jumps from him saying he's not her dad to finally treating her like his own daughter with not a lot of interaction in between.
It shows the big moments that changed their relationship, but I wish there was more shown of the in between with just thetwo of them.
Sorry for my word vomit!
Other than that I absolutely loved the show. I just wish it was longer 😭
시즌2때 제발 시나리오 수정작업이 있기를. 짜증나 닐 드럭만!!!!
I definitely see where you're coming from Tobz. I think the show is amazing and you can tell the right people are working on it. However, it could've used a couple more episodes because it felt a bit fast-paced and I wish the finale was a bit longer (We might be a bit biased because of our experience playing the game though). Neil Druckmann also confirmed that they will have way more infected in season 2 so it seems that they are listening to the criticism (What's the point of having a cure if there are like 4 clickers lol).
I also loved part 2 more and very curious to see how they adapt it. It will definitely be a bigger challenge, because so much of what made me love part 2 plays to the strength of the video game medium and I can't see how they'll replicate that in a passive medium. They did say they're doing season 2 and 3 so that tells me they're not sticking to the same narrative structure which is probably a good choice.
8.8?!!! Ridiculous.
I watched the final episodes through you guys. The show was too tame and slow for me.
yea agree the relationship wasn't as well-developed and a tad forced cuz they had less time to tell the story
episode 3 was a mistake. the SIDE character's flashback and story should've been 20 mins max. and the hour given to Joel/Ellie.
I'm gay as fcuk and I liked ep3 but I 100% agree with you. The main story should be about Ellie and Joel..
@@koory0uz904 thank you!
The show was rushed and they made too many unnecessary changes
