      Doesn’t look like the perfect Ellie? The voice actress Ellie looks more like her especially the eyes of Ellie from the games version & Pedro looks more a white latina then being a true caucasian like Joel’s game version. Wish he had the full beard like him too .

      Only better thing about the show is the showing on screen backstory with the stuff they didn’t show in the game and the voice actors in game were being used there motion captures of showing there actual emotions and transferring it into there characters faces in the game as most people don’t realize that nowadays with how realistic video game’s graphics have gotten and they think there’s not showing any emotions in faces in a game compared to live action wich isn’t true . Games better then show by far just like stuff like Harry Potter or game of thrones or walking dead live action being based off comics or books that’s stuff always turns out better with also more detail being able to be put into it.

      @@osojasmine8288 why are you being xenophobic? Who cares if Pedro is a white Latino instead of a "true Caucasian" he is still white and while he was born in Chile he was raised in USA, Texas, he still lives in the US/NYC mostly but I think he holds a Chilean citizenship too and visits his family in Chile frequently that's why both his Spanish-Chilean and American-Texan accent is perfect, he is fluent in both but you could argue English is his first language, his parents moved to the US when he was a baby so they probably taught him English first and then Spanish.
      He nailed it as Joel, focus on that instead or silly things like his beard or if he's Caucasian American white or Latino white.

    My favorite parallel in this episode is Anna lying about Ellie to protect Ellie and now Joel lying to Ellie also too protect her. A parents love is on another level and as beautiful as it is, there's consequences to it.
    To have Ashley as the woman birthing Ellie is my favorite cameo possibly ever. The emotion behind it and driving it makes me cry. It also makes me want to see Ashley Johnson do more live action work. What a damn performance.

      @@wiiplaya25 cool! I was just blown away by how well written this show is and the constant parallels they've presented us with. The whole show is about love and the consequences of it. The things people will do to protect who and what they love, feels so human in this show and it's why I love it and the game so much.
      Ellie meant EVERYTHING to Anna and she will do anything to protect her, even potentially put her childhood best friend at risk. She didn't know Ellie would be immune, but you better believe she's gonna lie to get Ellie safe.
      Just as Joel is going to lie to save Ellie because she in now his everything. They're both wildly selfish in those moments and there is no hesitation and it's such a beautiful and tragic human response. It's almost horrfying because it makes us confront ourselves and the decisions we know deep down we'd make. And 9 times out of 10, we're saving the one over the many. And we've seen how true that was during this pandemic, something as simple as wearing a mask was too hard for some people. It makes Joel's choice 10 years later hit harder for me, in the opposite way. 10 years ago I was completely in camp team wrong. Understood it, but 100% wrong. Now, I get it. Seeing the selfishness of humanity these past 3 years can harden your heart and make you want to say fuck the world, do we deserve saving? Maybe I'd rather just live with the people I love most and let the world just go on. Now I'm more 60/40 and that can swing on any given day.

      True but tbf Marlene probably was backed in a corner by a lot of people who realize that Ellie’s life being taken will end the “apocalypse”. Marlene was right, and wrong, depends on how you want to look at it, should she be given the choice to say no, and then everybody just has to live with the fact that there’s a cure that can save everyone, but they can’t because they leave it up to free will, which is why there’s not really a correct option in this situation, because either way someone was saved

      It goes deeper than that. We know Ellie would have wanted this. Marlene eludes to this and those who’ve played the sequel, know this to be true too.
      Her whole life has been decided by other people. She was put in FEDRA school by Marlene, her life set out for her - Captain Kwan gives her two roads she can go down, than after she gets bitten Riley gives her option 1 & 2 and ignores Ellie when she asks what option 3 is.
      From there she’s given to Joel and goes through a series of traumas and near death exp, where she’s to follow Joel’s every direction.
      After all this and all those who’ve died instead of her, Ellie is suffering from survivor’s guilt and needs her life to mean something. She would have readily let herself die for a cure. The tragedy, is that the one time she makes a major decision for herself, it’s taken away by the one person she loves in the whole world. The ending shows she sees through Joel’s lies and even though she’s alive, their relationship is forever broken because of this betrayal.

      This. As someone in love with the game for 10 years it was hard to express to newcomers the long haul character arcs they were in for without giving things away. People were writing it off as a stupid zombie show and I had to tread the line between biting my tongue and urging them to keep watching.
      You really can't judge this on the first few episodes although episode 3 with Bill and Frank did a solid job of showing newcomers this is not your typical post apocalypse story.
      The story is all about the bond between Joel and Ellie and the decisions that leads to. That really only kicks off into full gear by episode 6.

It's the passing of the torch from the OG Ellie to the actress who is playing Ellie in the show. Ashley in those 5 to maybe 10 minutes powerful performance and knocked it out of the park.
    Also, for me here's what sets this show apart from similar shows: restraint. It's eerie, intelligent, carefully paced and most importantly it only rarely shows you the infected. This means that when an infected DOES appear, it's impactful AF.

    Yes Nikki!! That’s what I’ve been saying as well. Marlene saying she thinks Ellie would want to do what’s right just really pissed me off. Because she didn’t give her the choice! So she was willing to let her die without her consent, when Ellie would probably have agreed to do it (not that a 14 year old is able to consent to such a thing anyway!). So she lied by omission and was willing to end Ellie’s life (and that took any other options off the table right then, leaving only one option for Joel),
    whereas Joel did what he did and lied to Ellie to save her life. I know who I lean towards supporting.

Neither option is great, but like I said, I’m killing them all too if I’m Joel. Also, even if Marlene had given her the choice, there is no way a traumatised 14 year old should be able to consent to such a thing.

    When debating the morality of this whole scenario recall what they said in the very first scene of the series about how if a fungal infection were to exist a cure is impossible to even create they even tell Joel that this isn't 100% guaranteed to work and they didn't even keep her alive for as much testing as they could possibly think of from blood, brain scans, anything to try to understand this better they just jumped straight to life ending surgery. Not only this but the Fireflies have been shown to be a very poorly managed group of essentially terrorists with lofty ideals but no real structure or plan, you hand this group an actual vaccine and think they won't monopolize it and use it as a means to become the dominant governmental body where they get to decide who to distribute the vaccine to? This is my argument for Joel being in the right here, but a crucial part of the sequence is Joel does not care in the slightest whether he is in the right or even if they can actually make a cure, regardless of the morality or benefit he absolutely refuses to lose Ellie for any reason. Right back to what Bill said in his note, I used to hate the world but I was wrong because I found one person worth saving, so that's what I did I saved them. Gosh, I just finished watching this ep. Damn, it's so hard. I mean, I really hate moral dilemmas. If it comes to a point when something can't be agreed upon, I'd do what I think is right, you do what you think is right. Marlene did what she thought was right, but Joel did what he felt was right.
    EDIT: Even though Ellie felt that the Fireflies are good people because of Riley, Someone needs to knock to her head that what happened was a tragedy and her life is much more precious than a sacrifice. People lived without a cure, Ellie doesn't need to die for a cure. it's not worth it.
    (NON-PLAYER POV)

      @kiwigirljacks Год назад +22

      They both lied to Ellie. But Marlene lied by omission without giving Ellie a choice to sacrifice herself (a choice no child should be made to make anyway) and was willing to end Ellie’s life. Joel was willing to lie and go scorched earth to save it. I’m with Joel on this one 👍

    • @c.lvr2602
      @c.lvr2602 Год назад +18

      You also have to factor in that the doctor only thought he could get a cure. The Fireflies were willing to sacrifice Ellie to extract a treatment that may not work, and even if it did, how would they have distributed it? They don't have the power or numbers to mass produce it. And then what happens if a community unreached by them has an outbreak and it spreads again? They were gonna kill Ellie based on a whole lot of maybes. The real complexity is that both sides were right and wrong as well. The Fireflies had the best intentions, but were risking a lot on something uncertain, and whilst what Joel did was pretty horrible, any parent would probably do the same. He just found a reason to live again, and he's expected to give it up?

      To be fair, that scene was in the 60s, before a lot of huge medical advancements, and I doubt they would have considered the possibility of Ellie's unique birth. But the real reason Ellie would have died in vain - in my opinion - is that the Fireflies have nowhere near the manpower they would need to even begin to mass distribute a cure

    From a purely TV perspective, i believe episode 3 with Bill and Frank was the best hour of TV i've seen in a long, long while. That episode is basically a mini-movie in itself, unexpected, powerful, self-contained, masterfully crafted, masterfully shot and masterfully acted.
    As for episodes that are more related to the story of TLoU so to speak, 1 is absolutely great in building up the story, the tension and setting everything up, but my fav is probably 8 just because of the performance of Bella.

    Reckon I've mentioned this around here before, but my brother worked on the show. He pushed to make the giraffe scene happen, as one of the logistical higher-ups apparently hadn't played the game and was confused as shit when he said "there needs to be giraffes." Of course, Mazin and Druckmann certainly would have brought the scene in, and there's a reason they did so pretty much shot-for-shot from the game, but I'm just really proud of my little bro. I'll never forget playing the game the first time -- that scene was the one that broke me. I was handling pretty much everything alright but those giraffes -- I fucking lost it.
    The show hit me the same. But it also was the first time I ever got goosebumps because of strawberries. Or teared up when Joel says "It wasn't time that did it." This is adaptation perfection. When they stick to the game, it's perfect; when they take a narrative detour, it's perfect.
