He was certainly the wrong guy, and Marlene knew that. She knew how selfish Joel was, although she probably did not expect his selfishness to manifest in the way it did. Probably expected him to dump Ellie somewhere along the way. Which he probably would've if not for Tess' insistence that he complete the mission. Still, they chose him because they had no choice. He and Tess were the only ones there to take the mission, and it would've worked had the Fireflies in the first location had not been killed.

That's the thing about the fireflies that so many people miss in their anger with Joel. The fireflies *weren't* going to give her a choice. What Joel made very clear in this episode is that he would do anything to prevent having his heart crushed again and torn from his chest. Unless you experienced loss in the same manner as Joel did with Sarah you could never fully understand what motivated him in that hospital, which I fear went somewhere beyond just love for Ellie. Joel in essence recovered a part of himself that he had lost so long ago and he's intent on never letting it go EVER again, if he can help it anyway. For 20 years, Joel has just been existing and once he met Ellie he actually began living again; so ask yourself, if you were Joel could you just give that up to go back to how you were?

I keep pondering everytime i watch a reaction to this episode. Had they went through with Ellie's procedure and achieving a cure (which btw, was it ever implied that it would work 100% this time?), is it possible Joel would just try to unalive himself again without flinching?
In episode 4, when Ellie asks "what's the point of going on?", Joel says "for family"
Would having Tommy around be enough to prevent suicidal ideation? Assuming Tommy was nearby when he first attempted it, then i don't think it would be. As well as being an uncle might not be enough for him either. He wants a daughter/father bond again. Something he can only get from having Ellie

I found it interesting to learn that when the game came out, creator Neil Druckman said they had focus groups who were asked about whether they agreed with Joel's decision. Non-parents were 50/50. Parents? 100% in favor of Joel. Which should surprise no one. If it's the world or your child, the world will lose every time.
It's funny to think that people who played the game when it came out and were aghast at what Joel did are now parents 10 years later and watching the show and now going, "That's it, Joel, go all John Wick on those Firefly assholes! Save your daughter!"

I have always understood why Joel made the choice to save Ellie. The entire game set up his character to be that way. When they were fleeing in the car with Tommy and Sara, it was Joel who refused to help others, it was Joel who told Tommy to drive through people so they could escape. Then it showed him as a closed off person for years until he met Ellie. Joel's whole world is Tommy and Ellie, and so in his mind, he did save the world. But I will never agree with his decision to lie to Ellie about it, even though he thinks he's "protecting her". Marlene never gave Ellie the choice, and when you think about it, neither did Joel.

    • @murdershe......7378
      @murdershe......7378 Год назад +7

@@Blinkptx I disagree. I think any parent would do whatever it took to save their child. Including killing multiple people. The rules changed when the apocalypse happened and Joel already lost Sarah and he was not going to let them kill Ellie without her even being asked. If somebody was in the wrong then it was Marlene for not asking Ellie what she wanted to do. Ellie was not given a choice therefore Joel was left with zero choice.

I wish they'd included the part from the game where it's mentioned that Ellie would've been their 12th attempt. It would've justified Joel's actions more. No, Anna was lying to protect Ellie. If she told Marlene that she cut the cord after the bite, then she would risk Ellie's life. So the episode basically starts with a lie and ends with a lie about Ellie.
In regards to Part 2: I love the game, but be aware that the major moment you're referring to is just the beginning, and not going to be the climax of the type of feeling you might have had there. Its a brutal game from start to finish that will leave you empty and dead inside at the end, but for me, it also made me think daily about all the characters, their choices, what could have been, for a whole month straight. Take that as you will, I obviously cannot go into details without spoiling anything.
I know there's a lot of people, especially back from the height of Gamergate, that love to make other peoples experience a miserable one when it comes to Part 2 (but now also the show). Personally I don't feel knowing both games made the show any worse for me, in fact I loved all the references they threw in, especially in episode 6 when they reached Jackson, but also the beginning here with Anna had some references that you'll only get after you're done with Part 2, which btw, is going to be more than one season long. That much they have already confirmed. So for the whole thing it could very well be another 5-6 years until we got the entire thing adapted as a show, enough time for you to forget again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So, for me it is generally definitely a recommendation, but with the caveat that it's not going to be an easy ride, emotionally. In the end it is your decision.

I actually gave some warnings in the previous episodes about the potential adaptation, because she obviously is very emotional and I fear that might be too much. If they know the initial big plot point then they'll at least understand the tone of it, but I wanted to make sure that this is far from being the end of it, so that they can decide for themselves whether they want to go through with that or not.

Pretty much. The Fireflies were desperate and in the case of Marlene in particular, she was facing dissention in the ranks and was in danger of losing her leadership position. They could not afford Ellie refusing it and there was a chance she would (as shown with her actions with Sam in E5, she thought it was just them needing her blood samples or something).
The Fireflies in general are a bunch of revolutionaries barely more competent than the People's Front of Judea in "Monty Python's Life of Brian." It's another reason to support Joel's actions, because I have NO confidence in these idiots being able to make a viable cure, let alone be able to distribute it on the wide scale it would need to be. And as others have mentioned, a smart person would not hastily kill the one known immune person. It's like killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

    • @clover2739
      @clover2739 Год назад

Yeah asking would just be the illusion of choice, this is way too important to just let her go sadly. I think they thought it would be better if they had it so Ellie wasn’t going to have any fear or pain or worry about it. In their head that’s probably the most humane way to do things, and even though Marlene is right there it’s Ellie would’ve said yes, they made a mistake of not asking because that way Ellie probably could’ve said goodbye to Joel and let him know herself thats what she wants and Joel would less likely go on a killing spree. I mean… he probably would’ve killed himself tbh but I can’t imagine he’d do all that he did here because he’d be able to see her and process it more

Fun fact: Cordyceps grow everywhere BUT the brain 😊 so that “surgeon” had no idea what he was doing 🤦‍♂️

  • @Scott_Burton
    @Scott_Burton Год назад

Given the time it takes for the infection to spread, I'm not sure the bite was the catalyst for Ellie's immunity, although it may be. I hypothesize that the cordyceps spreads through the body and undergoes a state change when it reaches "control" and the knife Annie used to cut the umbilical cord was just inside an infected's brain. It's a hypothesis, and will probably never get an actual direct answer. But it's an interesting postulation. At least to me.
11:58-12:02 Well, let's be honest. The guys who ambushed Ellie and Joel aren't going to be looking specifically for Ellie and Joel with complete vivid descriptions or photos. These are "people who we don't recognize, near our operation. Subdue them and find out who they are" which is a very restrained approach in this world... As Marlene points out, she barely made it with a full group. Sure Joel is capable, but what are the odds he'd make it after all this time, and make it to their location, after the group he was hired to take her to was dead, and the facility Tommy knew about (if Tommy is even still alive, in Marlene's mind) was abandoned?
Major flaw I found in their plan though... It starts with "Our doctor thinks..." this is why Ellie is immune. Then the plan is to kill Ellie to harvest what's in her brain _if_ the doctor is right. Then reproducing what he _thinks_ is in there and he _thinks_ is how this works, in a lab, would be complicated to achieve with a limited supply of the original material, even in a (non-apocalypse) 2023 lab. Even _if_ all his assessments and assumptions are right... Even if all his work is successful. What if there's an interaction between the cordyceps and something about the brain it's infected that defines "this messenger belongs to this neural structure and is therefore 'friend' " but entered into another, unrelated body, the messenger chemicals don't produce the same response? (Ellie was introduced to the cordyceps roughly at birth, and she shares approximately 50% of her mother's genetic material.
Maddison mentions how they didn't even give Ellie a choice. Christian, you said "she might have been down." I'd ask. If someone gave you the explanation of the plan, and someone listed for you all the elements I just mentioned in my previous paragraph. For every _thinks_ and every _if_ (not the quoted one) you cut the chances in half. 50% 25% 12.5% ... 6.25% (I'm only counting the specifically emphasized instances) How eager would either of you be to volunteer your certain death for a 6.25% probability of this actually all being right and working?
15:24-15:29 Man with a gun wants the unconscious girl you're about to kill. Grabbing a scalpel (maybe a 1 inch blade at best) and telling him "I won't let you take her." What should you expect to happen?
I may be alone in this, but I think when Ellie asked Joel to swear what he told her about the Fireflies was true. She understood it wasn't, but was giving him a chance to tell her the truth, but if he needed it to be true to cope with what actually happened, she was going to drop it, treat it as true, and maybe one day she'd believe it.
Reflection on the season. I think it's funny how the roads are mostly in good condition from Utah, to Colorado to Wyoming... It's 20 years of no maintenance, and we've seen there are still winters, obviously there's still rain. As we say in in the mid southern states "Some places they drive on the right side of the road, some places they drive on the left side of the road. 'Round here we drive on what's left of the road." 20 years of winters, springs, summers and autumns. Every road should have so many potholes and cracks and such... You'd be lucky to find one where you could drive 30 mph without being jarred every other second.

I'm pretty sure there was no way the firefly doctors could have created a vaccine, they were talking in surgery about not having much power. They had barely any tech, just a run down paediatric hospital and there is no way they'd be able to achieve what they'd need.
I love that both Ellie's mother and Joel lied to save her.
I cried so much through this episode too.

Yes option 2 for sure. But. For part 2 I would really want you guys to go in blind. It's good you guys know the first hour so yall know why its so controversial. But It would be cool seeing it from a blind perspective as it can make you wanna form your own opinion on the show so when you play it. You could see the difference between the two. Cus I started playing the first game again after the show. And it made me really love the game In one way. And it made me love the series aswell because it is the greatest story told and seeing two different versions of the same story is so amazing. But thank yall for yall reactions vids :)

    issues:
    1) How the Fireflies went about it: They should've let Ellie decide and they should've let that decision happen in front of Joel so he'd know the truth.
    2) Marlene's argument about how Ellie will die from clickers and raiders because "the world is broken and you could've fixed it." Lady, the world has always been broken. People have always have been doing evil, the only differences now are that there's no law and order to combat this. Human nature isn't gonna change just because you find a cure for cordyceps. Also, how are you planning on distributing this cure if it even works? I didn't hear any guarantee that it would work.
    3) Joel ain't in the right either with how he handled it, but I get it.

Okay something literally just occurred to me because of what y’all were saying about why couldn’t they be gentler when they found Joel and Ellie at the end when they knew to expect a man traveling with a young girl! I think they did know who it was and Marlene had them approach that way to separate Ellie and Joel and to incapacitate Joel so they could get Ellie into surgery without him being a problem!!! Marlene never intended to give Ellie a choice and knew the whole time it meant Ellie’s life if she ever made it to the hospital!!😮

    It's an ethics exercise.
He killed the doctor who was going to kill Ellie. He did not kill the nurses who were not armed. Maureen told him it was the doctor's "theory" they were going to use to kill Ellie. Ellie who among other things incredibly saved his life when he was stabbed.
Neill Druckmann asked the game play testers if Joel made the right choice - people without children split 50-50 with kids 100% with Joel.

1.) You can see deviations or additions from the source material just like you were able to for pt1 once the show continues.
2.) It gives you a chance to expand into some gaming territory on YT.
    3.) It's worth it.

13:14 What's going to happen to her? Death. Cordyceps grow INSIDE the brain. You can't just cut that open and put things back together afterwards. Ellie's a post apocalyptic Henrietta Lacks and the Cordyceps inside her are Henrietta's immortal cells that are still being used to this day. They key to finding a cure, more like vaccine, is inside those Cordyceps and a person of power wants them, no matter what.
14:39 This is Raider Joel, the guy Robert was terrified of and the guy that Marlene knew what he was capable of...the guy she didn't want to be indebted to because when he comes to collect, he collects!
14:57 He can't leave any survivors which will be made clear with his scene with Marlene. But before you start to feel sorry for these guys, keep in mind that they were on board with what was going to happen at this hospital. They knew what was going to happen here and they are on guard because the key to the future was about to be unlocked. They signed on to taking away 14 years consent, because they wanted the benefit of being immune themselves. A-holes!
15:06 The sheep clothing the Fireflies were wrapped in has been ripped off, though we saw hints early on. They're wolves that just want to replace FEDRA with themselves. We saw how they were with Riley. Riley left FEDRA because they gave her the life of a grunt, and she ran to the Fireflies only to end up being a different kind of grunt. The Fireflies posted her at a mall, which they didn't clear, alone, and had her build bombs which they used to attack FEDRA inside the QZ and there was collateral damage--Remember Robert, Tess and the men guarding Tess? They likely didn't know that there were people in the building, but that didn't matter. They were going to carry out their attack regardless because gorilla warfare is the only way they can fight FEDRA and their numbers. Marlene was sending Riley to the Atlanta QZ to infiltrate their ranks. If she were ever caught she would have been hanged, and Marlene was okay with that, because she was expendable and Marlene wants her soldiers to "following f'ing orders," remember?
The Fireflies wanting to return power to the people is the lie they tell people to grow their ranks. They simply want power and will do whatever is needed to seize it, and that's why they didn't give Ellie a choice. Everything hinged on what was in side her. They've been fighting a losing war for 20 years and they needed a win, and Ellie's that win. What their doctor wants to do is unethical, and he knows it, but he drank the Cool-Aid too, and he wants to make history for finding the post apocalyptic version of the Immortal Cells. Ellie's story parallel's the story of enslaved Black Americans and their descendance and how medicine thrived when the government didn't consider them people, but property. Wicked stuff was done to people to make many of the medicines we all benefit from today ='( Ellie's story in particular reminds me a lot of Henrietta Lacks'. Her cells were taken without her consent and sent to doctors the world over who wanted them. And many vaccines, treatments, including gene mapping was all made possible because of her immortal cells, which are still being used to this day. Doctors found fame and fortune off this woman and pharmaceuticals made billions. That was more than 70 years ago, and Henrietta's family still hasn't been compensated for this theft! Anyway, back to Ellie. How was she classified during Marlene's deal with Joel and Tess? Cargo? Sounds like another name for property. Property doesn't get consent, as history shows. The Fireflies don't see Ellie as a person, but a means to an end. Marlene was shown to be cold in the flashback and that wasn't an accident. She was likely like Joel, and cut herself off from her emotions. She started to relapse with her childhood friend Anna, Ellie's mom, and to make sure it didn't happen again, she put Ellie into foster care. The only thing Marlene is attached to is her Firefly cause, and she'll do anything to protect that.
David was a wicked, wicked man, and you know what? The Fireflies are David and his flock. "When we are in need, he shall provide" isn't all that different from "When you're lost in the darkness look for the light." The Fireflies, like David, saw something they wanted from Ellie, and whether she wanted to or not, they were both going to take it from her. David was up front with what he wanted, but not the Fireflies, they made Ellie believe that they were just going to draw blood and run tests, but we all know that there was much more to finding a vaccine than that. And had Ellie known it would cost her life from the beginning, she would have told them all to go to hell.
Ellie has survivors guilt and it hit her all at once when they finally made it to the hospital. That's why she's feeling down and not very talkative. Had Marlene and the Fireflies asked her in this moment, she very likely would have agreed to their procedure since she blames herself for the deaths of those she lost along the way. Still, you can't possibly think a 14 year can consent to such a procedure, it isn't ethical. She's traumatized and is subject to manipulation in her current state. It's surprising that the Fireflies didn't ask Ellie, as they probably could have avoided all this. Joel likely wouldn't have liked what Ellie most likely would have agreed to anyway, but he would have respected Ellie's choice. Removing that choice is why Joel is doing what he's doing. Yes, it's a bit selfish, but his actions present a future opportunity for Ellie to consent to a different procedure when she's better informed.
16:16 Was he the only doctor though? We know there are other doctors out there. We saw three, five actually, through the series. This doctor likely had peers they he spoke with and was ready to collaborate with. He just needed the goods to go forward.
16:38 He did, and I think it was necessary. As I said earlier, Ellie has survivors guilt. Joel's actions and lies, wipe that guilt away, and gives Ellie a chance to actually have a life and to start living. Had Joel told her the truth, she would have tried to find another doctor to do what this one wanted to do and likely would have gotten herself killed in the process, dying angry and sad. Joel wants Ellie to live, to have a life, something that was taken away from his daughter Sarah. Yes, Ellie being around helps him, but that still doesn't change the fact that he did what he did because the Fireflies were ready to have their way with Ellie, something David was trying to do too just one episode ago, and we saw how Ellie fought like hell when she knew what he wanted.
Joel's actions delay things. Sure, it might have ended things altogether, but that all depends on all doctors being dead, which can't be the case, right. Billions are Infected by now, sure, but millions are likely still surviving, and number of those people are probably qualified people too.
    Nice reaction =)

I’m not reading everything because it’s kinda silly you typed this much but, what Joel did was wrong for the right reasons. He wanted to save a little girl knowing it would take away the cure from humanity. Joel is in no way the good guy, the fire flys we’re trying to make a cure. But whilst joel isn’t a good guy, he’s a great character.

The only thing I regret about this episode is that they didn't include the scene from the game where they both nearly drown at the bus depot. That had me on the edge of my seat and I was dying to see how they'd recreate it 😢

I think I agree with Joel, I probably would have done the same thing. No one was 100% positive the cure would even work. She said that the doctor said he THINKS it could be a cure. He wasn't positive. What if it didn't work? Ellie's death would then be for nothing. That would be too much for Joel. He wasn't willing to take that chance.

It's going to be 2-3 years before 1st season of Part 2 is out. That is a *long* time. With how many changes Part I had in the show, I think it would be fine to play Part II. That's a lot of content to pass up on in the meantime, so I think it would be good to play.
Could maybe even double up and have one person play the game, then both react to footage of the (edited) gameplay later? Not sure.

If a fan of zombies, watch "One Cut of the Dead". One of the most unique zombie themed movies ever made. However, it is one of those movies (like The Sixth Sense) that is so easily spoiled. It's best to go into the movie completely cold, no trailers, no synopsis, no nothing. Just a single word can spoil the movie. If interested, a couple suggestions for the best experience... watch it with the original Japanese dialogue with English subtitles, and second suggestion... don't Google it, again it's so easily spoiled, and can ruin the unique masterful experience this movie has to offer. 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, for a very good reason.
