Pedro portrays Joel's shell-shocked demeanor perfectly. 20 years later and he's still suffering the effects of losing his child-- a beautiful and considerate soul, in an unexpected and brutal manner. It's clear that he's taken barbarous actions to have survived the apocalypse, after her death, and made it all the way from Texas to Boston. He appears tired and muted, but his rage and trauma are always simmering just beneath that deceptively placid surface.

True. However, when the game was originally released on PS3 in 2013, Joel's watch is never damaged. Ellie does mention the broken watch and we do see the watch is broken, but the devs made a mistake when Joel and Sarah were shot at. If you look closely at Joel's watch after the shooting (PS3 version) his watch is not damaged. The devs corrected this later.

Ontop of that With Joel and his daughter are seen as avoiding flour products by coincidence, I.E; Joel not liking pancakes, refusing the biscuits, Sarah not being into raisin cookies, and Joel forgetting the cake.

@@Putrefax its honestly an interesting theory; ergot, like the scientist at the start was discussing, is a fungus that grows on wheat and other grains. It didn't kill everyone all at once though, and I'm sure that avoiding it would help. In fact a few historians show evidence for recreational use in antiquity.
Cordyceps does grow on certain substrates of grains, and the idea that it would flower as ambient temperatures rose is a real possibility. In the game it seems like it was spread from crops in South America that held flowering bodies that were imported into the States, so at least there it's definitely food products.

That music comes from the game, composed by Gustavo Santaolalla. He is a great player and I am happy they use some of his music for the show. Not sure if the game would have been teh same without his music, it really set the tone from scene to scene.
That establishing scene is gut wrenching even as someone who played it in the game a few times. The fact that Sarah was just in a state of bewilderment, terror, and pain and Joel couldn't do anything makes me cry every damn time. In the game it is an interactive scene so you feel a bit more inside of it, which made it hurt even more. That whole game is a giant act of complicity, in the good and bad things Joel and Ellie have to undertake throughout.

At the beginning the talk show scientist talks about how some parasitic fungus prevents decay on the hosts, he also mentions that penicillin comes from fungus, so I'm thinking that the reason why the zombies seem to almost have superhuman aggressiveness and speed it's because the fungus is both repressing pain signals, so the victims don't feel anything when falling or going against walls, and by taking over the mind, it also removes some self-preservation instincts that normally instinctively make us not want to run around like maniacs and launch ourselves at other people with no regard for our own physical well being. A lot of the ways we use our bodies, is related to our brain's understanding of our weaknesses, through a sense of fatigue and sensory feedback through pain, if that is not present, it's like a barrier being lifted allowing the zombie to use all of their body's resources to the limit.

It's a great episode but IMDB is always a bit odd. Many mediocre shows have great ratings on there because the fanbase rates the show high in raids, and others don't care enough to rate it, etc. The second Last of Us game is easily considered one of the best games ever made, there is a large consensus on this, yet it would probably have a mediocre IMDB score because it was very divisive for its core fanbase (which is not inherently a bad thing).

Like some of the shot composition is identical to the game, IE the framing of the shot, and actors locations in the scene, dialogue, etc. It's incredibly well made.

So excited for this! I am a huge fan of both videogames, and I think this pilot was a perfect balance of having certain lines/scenes that were one-to-one recreations from the games while also being comfortable with expanding on the game in certain ways. That entire opening scene with the 1968 tv show was brand new, and they also spent more time with Sarah in the opening which just makes her death even more heartbreaking, imo. I think the only notable difference from the game so far is that Joel is keeping tabs on Tommy and him not responding for a few weeks is why he wants to travel west. In the beginning of the game, they imply his falling-out with Tommy after he joined the Fireflies was so bad that Joel doesn't even seem to care about Tommy anymore.
