      That said, entirely "break me" moments and entire arcs were throughout the game and part 2. They don't flood it, but they fill it out amazingly. I had been playing games since .. the 90s, but this one, select others countable on one hand, had the effect of entirely changing the way I saw the storytelling, life lesson teaching, etc potential of games, through seeing things done so incredibly well. I love seeing the reactions of people who never played them, because aside from the debate over what's right or wrong I'm seeing a lot of "What am I supposed to do now?" and "This changed me." which is exactly the impact when you play it. But if they can make Bill and Frank so beautiful on screen I have absurdly high hopes for Sam and Henry. They showed a bit in the trailer already.
      SPOILER>>>>
      This is where the gameplay did storytelling work. When you get separated and Joel is protecting Sam and Henry is protecting Ellie, that feels soooooo heavy in the game. I wonder how they play it in the show? That is just a storytelling device that doesn't translate directly to TV with the same emotional impact. So I wonder if Sam and Henry get a short backstory before the main plot progresses.

    It’s inspired by the video game. At times you’ll have moments directly lifted from the game itself. This episode greatly differs from the game.
    I don’t wish to spoil you unless you want to know more but the Bill you met here is not the same man in the games.
    I believe this is what could have been Bill’s story if the world wasn’t as dark as it is. (In the game)

      Basically put the game has 3 playable characters. Sarah, Joel and Ellie. The storytelling never departes from any of them. So whenever you see a scene were none of them are participating, that was added for the TV-Show alone. The sidecharacter's stories like Bill's and Frank's are told through letters you can pick up. In this particular case they deviated quite a bit, because in the game Bill is still alive when Joel and Ellie get to his place. But Frank isn't. He killed himself after being bitten. A fact that Bill is unaware off. He thinks Frank left him and ran away. And he is bitter about it.

    On Ellie’s fascination with guns. Keep in mind that not only has she grown up in the apocalypse, but she has already had an infected fungus monster try and kill her in a brutally vicious attack. Anyone having gone through that kind of trauma is going to be thinking they want a way to defend themselves from the world, especially a world full infected fungus monsters.
    And as for the killing the trapped infected, I imagine it’s hard to be empathetic to a monster that has brutally killed everyone you’ve ever cared about, and tried to kill you more than once.

      I know I’m very late, but I also want to add: It’s lightly implied that Ellie had to kill Riley once she became infected, and probably is left wondering if she killed her best friend, or if her best friend was already dead and she has nothing to worry about.
      I also think the anger might have come from that moment as well. Infected took her best friend away, and she’s getting a form of empty vengeance (which light spoilers for part 2: that’s like Ellie’s whole thing.)

    Come into the video game world, friend! There are a lot of magical stories!
    This part is very different from the game, but I think this tv version fits into the Last of Us universe too. It still feels very last of us part 1-> a kind of beautiful but tragic treatise on love.
    Regarding Ellie's "weird" interest in guns, she was raised in a military school that taught might makes right. She's probably been taught the only way to stay safe is to have a weapon on her. Her knife wasn't enough to keep her from being bit. All of this confusing change, it makes sense she'd want to be more armed. Then she basically defeated death by not becoming infected. It makes sense she would be weirdly obsessed with death and the infected.

    • @KillaKay928
      @KillaKay928 Год назад +7

      I personally think its less of an obsession and more of a morbid curiosity mixed with maybe some hatred for the infected given her back story (the back story in which we have not seen yet).
      I think people that are new to the story are being intentionally confused and worried by the writers and directors.
      I could be wrong, but just my suspensions so far.
      P.s. I know the whole story from both games. The show just has many twists and deviations so now I'm like theory crafting on what they might be going towards or how they will deviate next.

      It's not just that she is interested in Guns.
      The Way she watched Joel beat a man to death, her constant questions that basically revolve around "You killed people, how did it feel?" and now that weird encounter. It looks like she got a (metaphorical) hard on for the mere thought of killing someone. She straight up acts like a Serial Killer in the making. And for me, that makes her Character extremly unlikable.

      That’s deliberate, and necessary. In the game, Joel is the character the players inhabit, and has to be a virtually unkillable monster able to wade through hordes of infected. In the game, Joel can take multiple shots from handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and as long as the player can get to cover and use a bandage, he’ll recover. Trying to make the live action version of the character match that level of badassery would look absolutely ridiculous. He’s not the Terminator. He needs to be human, and vulnerable, to be relatable.

    This was one of the most emotional & best hours I’ve watched in a long, long time. What a beautiful, moving piece of art. The writing, directing, cinematography & acting were exemplary. I was not expecting this at all.
    The flashback giving us more Tess(Anna Torv)! And Joel at the beginning stacking rocks in remembrance of her. I’m glad they addressed her death & his dealing with it. I completely lost it when Frank told Bill, “Then love me the way I want you to.” Then they hit you with the piece of music “On the Nature of Daylight”😢 during their last day🎨🍂🍁🌸, which is also found in one of my favorite movies “Arrival” by Denis Villeneuve(I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it 👍). Bill to Frank “I was never afraid before you showed up.” & “I’m old, I’m satisfied, and you were my purpose.” Frank to Bill “Paying attention to things, it's how we show love." 😭 The letter Bill leaves telling Joel what his purpose is, thus showing him the way forward. And of course the Linda Ronstadt Long, Long Time call back at the final scene for all the feels again. 🪟❤️

Whether it was altered or cut only the creators know, but in the game, Joel and Ellie meet up with Bill who gives them supplies and the truck. It's been a while since I've played the game so I don't remember exactly but he either discussed having had a "person", but never naming them or I think there may have been a letter you could find by exploring. The core of Bill is exactly the same as the game. Given that he is so paranoid him taking Joel's advice and actually being successful thwarting all the raiders makes as much sense to his character as the game's counterpart.

    I have mixed feelings about this episode. I’ll start by saying this episode bore very little resemblance to this same section in the game. Without spoiling the details of the game, I will say that in many ways I loved this version of the Bill/Frank story so much more than the game’s take on it. But there was one element of the game that I was really looking forward to and did not get, and that was the interaction between Ellie and Bill. I suppose if I were forced to choose, though, I’d choose the live action version. I think the creators of this show are dedicated to staying true to the video game storyline, unless they find a way to tell a better story. That’s what they did in this case, and I loved it.

    They definitely fleshed out Bill and Frank far more than the video game. It was nice to see more of their story. However, in the game, there is some great interaction between Bill, Joel, and Ellie, which I was really looking forward to being translated to the show, so I can't help but feel like I was deprived of something. In the game, Frank was already dead, and was nothing more than a very bitter wound in Bill's heart. So while I did enjoy the backstory, I do feel like they sacrificed something great to give us a side story. A great poetic side story, but still. I have mixed feelings about this. There is a line "He's the only one crazy enough to wear a shirt like that." I really would have loved to see them clash over Frank's Hawaiian shirts. Missed opportunity there.
    Also curious how many people are now going to wander around backyards hoping to fall into a hole.

      @Mike-di1og Год назад +1

      There will be other opportunities for banter, so I really don't think anything was lost. I think this show did Bill and Frank better than the game in pretty much every way. I'm actually not too fond of the game's storyline with Bill anymore after seeing what it could have been when not constrained to Joel's perspective. There's plenty of banter and plenty of misery porn in this story, and I think that makes the writers' choice to turn this part away from that to tell a kind of story that really CAN'T be found in any other part of the narrative the best possible choice.

    • @chuckmanion1128
      @chuckmanion1128 Год назад +1

      @@Mike-di1og Ultimately this reflects what I think is a problem in storytelling: focus. The story is about Joel and Ellie. So things should to some degree relate back to that. Things like taking a half hour to show Sarah, that's fine because it tells the audience about Joel's Trauma (though I think they overdid that too in some aspects). What did Bill and Frank's story have to do with Joel and Ellie? A few mentions of Tess and Joel? The only real tidbit was that were smuggling together as far back as 13 years earlier. It did establish Joel as a protector with some relationship parallels but they'd already done that with Tess's beating from Robert. A few moments of world building? It was fairly standard, that most could already guess. So while yes, it is a beautiful story, it doesn't give perspective on our main story. Put this in a spin off and expand the story further, because ultimately it was 20 year summary in under an hour. While it is amazing what the show achieved in that brief window, there is so much more you could do with that given the proper time. Also, I felt there were important story beats in the game. Like Joel not being able to bring himself to tell Bill that Tess is dead, and Bill inadvertently hitting that particular sore spot a few times. Particularly in the "Let's get on with it then" scene. That was a scene that always stuck with me. While I don't need that exact scene, I did want some of those story beats. You could of had Bill not getting it, but Frank have the empathy to immediately realize Tess is dead. Who else knows Tess and Joel in such a way to have that kind of interaction? Tommy, but that relationship is totally different and has its own story beats to hit. So I don't think we'll get that type of banter in the show. I think there was a way to bridge the gap, where we could have more of their backstory, while still giving us their interaction with Joel and Ellie.
