The good thing about this show is that people that didn't play the game are actually liking the show so that tells you that the writing of the story of the game was fantastic to begin with.

@@Here4TheMemes22 They're amazing games, both Part 1 and Part 2, but they are not light-hearted. Both are emotionally draining in very different ways, but are master classes in video game design combined with narrative and impacting player emotions through that combo. I highly recommend them! Especially the PS5 Remake of Part 1! It's the best way to play the game (as someone who played the hell out of both the PS3, and PS4 versions, I can't go back to those after playing the PS5 one)! I hope you do find the time to give the games a go one day!

For some reason I never thought about this. I just had the general understanding that the watch reminded him of Sarah but the fact that it was broken due to the same event that killed his daughter and he carries the watch stuck in the time she died even 20 years later... Well that's another level of messed up.

I love the game also... I was a bit weary of this but 💖love this adaptation, I'm with through this journey. I 💖how very close this to the Game. The action, a touch of comedy, the feels and horror.
Joel looks at he's watch to remind himself that was the time his daughter died. So he'll never forget her.
Joel was always my fav character so far in current Games.
Fun Fact: the writer of the Game "The Last of Us" Neil Drunckmann is also writing this I hope he continues with all the series.
Also the Actor: Merie Dandridge who plays Marlene she also plays in the Game.
Bella Ramsey who plays Ellie watched the Playthrough of the Game, because all the Actors were told not to play the game, so she did in secret, not so secret no more lol.
And yea to think this could happen in theory, this makes much more sense than other zombie shows because in others they are dead with rotting bodies so they wouldn't be able to move around much and would die just by being exposed to the elements, with this they are somewhat alive aren't really rotting etc this is just way more realistic and has the possibility of actually happening
Not really, not to this degree, fungal infections by nature spread slowly and taking over an organism as complex as a human without killing it is pretty much impossible, modern medicine can fight fungal infections as well. However back in 2003 when the show takes place the technology to do so in something so severe didn't exist. Detection methods also were not as advanced, the show got the date for the setting right.
His name has a roll with the r and his second name is pronounced a bit different. So glad people are finally paying attention to that sexy Chilean man!

It's very accurate to the source material. Sarah's death is even more unexpected in the game though, since you start the game playing as her, which makes it seem like she is going to be the main character.

Looking back at the scene with the infected kid that FEDRA killed, it makes you wonder how many immune people did they kill, because they believe immunity is impossible and they don't quarantine them to wait and see if they will turn.

this is likely because if a single person f*cks up during the quarantine process, the whole quarantine zone is compromised. it truly is just safer to euthanize them than to risk at least hundreds of living people.

My mother loved The Walking Dead more than any other show, save for maybe Star Trek. I had always hoped for a faithful adaptation of The Last of Us to be made, so I could watch it with her, as she wasn't at all interested in video games. Nor the idea of sitting around watching me play one; no matter how good the story might be.
I really wish she were still here to see this show. She would have loved it.

Not all planes crashed because infection a lot were not given permission to land after the infection got bad on the ground so my guess is the group of planes before the crash were running low on fuel and looking for a empty runway or highway strip or field for en emergency landing or crash landing
That or took off regardless from the ground its hard to say if they where taking off or landing.
@@SouthernMercenary crash landing most likely they most likely called a national emergency stopping all movement everywhere in the United States all flights grounded leading to no airport being allowed to accept them due to being almost overrun or overwhelmed with flights stopping with little word from government... nowhere to land 2 options crash land or force a landing on a runway risking it all because they could be killed by military personnel keeping quarantine or infected....

@@SouthernMercenary ooh yea that one maybe but I'd say that group was lost ish they probably had to make a crash land anyway planes can only go so far on the fuel they got and the one you are talking about probably landed in a hot terminal realized it tried to go but the infection got aboard...still harrowing to watch and think of how it all went down...most of what I say I'd from watching all sorts of scary shows n movies I kinda just draw from that knowledge as well as some books and observations on how certain governments handled more recent and past outbreaks and disease...
Yes, the air traffic controllers had probably left their posts hours earlier, considering airports were almost certainly where the infection entered the city. The sky would have been filled with circling planes hoping for clearance. Landing while not knowing if there is another plane on the runway would be terrifying regardless of the circumstances.
Interesting fact: in the beginning of the episode they mentioned trouble in Jakarta. Indonesia is one of the largest producers of flour in the world, Jakarta specifically. Throughout the episode they run out of pancakes, they don't eat the biscuits, they forget the cake...the fungus spores were IN THE FLOUR. That's how it spread so fast, and only miraculous luck saved Sarah and Joel from getting infected

Wouldn't the fungi die when flour gets cooked though? In the game it was implicit by a newspaper that it was mostly spread through moldy food.

So there’s actually a fan theory that the infection was spread through contaminated flour, and that’s how Joel and Sarah didn’t get infected. They didn’t have pancake mix for breakfast, refused the neighbors biscuits, and Sarah didn’t eat the cookies cause they were raisin

The Actress that plays as Marlene also did her Characters Voice in the Game as well so I’m surprised they hired her to Act in the Show too but then again she is an Actress in other Shows and Movies
its more than she is around the same age and similar looks to marlene. Most other characters and their VA's are different in age and looks. Ellies va is like 39 years old so she cant play a 14 year old. Troy baker also just doesnt look that old

their orders were to quarantine the city, no one was allowed to leave. they were trying to contain it. injured or not it would have been a bad situation

Cordyceps fungus is the fungi you’re thinking of. We definitely don’t want that to adapt to affect us.
There are species of it that affects mammals though
Although only rodents
The good news is even if it does evolve to effect us, the effects wouldn't be this dramatic. It would take a long time for the fungus to evolve the correct mind altering chemicals to convince the brain to attack all people on sight. But the infection itself would still be very bad for humanity.

@@gergopiroska5749 You might be thinking of Toxoplasma gondi. It's a single celled parasite rather than a fungi. It effects the prey of cats and is spread via cat poop. It actually does reduce human reflexes slightly in those who are infected with it. There's an increase chance of being in car accidents if you have it and a few other things. It's thought to effect humans as we and other apes have historically been preyed upon by cats. It's more pronounced in mice though. They become drawn to the smell of cat urine and a few other side effects that cause them to be more likely to be eaten by cats.

Luckily i forgot most of the story due to how long ago it was released. I only remember a lil bit lol
The “zombies” in the last of us aren’t zombies. Zombies are reanimated dead people that feed on the living. The infected in tlou aren’t reanimated it’s a cordyceps (fungus) that attacks the host keeping it alive to spread and infect more people. This means the host is still alive and aware of what is happening without any control of what they do. So far this aspect hasn’t been explored in the show but in the game you can hear some of the runners (first stage of infection) crying because that’s pretty much all they have control over but even then it’s just a noise they make.
Yeah but by the time they’re in more advanced stages that person they were is long gone, it’s still not wrong to call them zombies based on the fact that they’re propelled to spread the infection and can do so by bites/scratches

11:30 First of all, every movie has their own version of what zombies are. For example, World War Z vs Walking Dead.
How do you know you aren’t infected when you just met a stranger especially when covered in blood? How do they spread the infection? Is the virus only limited to physical contact like bite, scratches or blood? Or is it an airborne virus?
No one knows which explains why the soldier is wearing a gas mask to protect himself from any toxic/disease that you may inhale. Chances are that it can incubate in a host without you knowing. You know… delayed reaction & you’re the carrier to spread unto others.
There are no vaccines to cure the infection & no detection equipment yet to verify if you’re an infected or not. Especially during the start of the outbreak when no one knows about it in the first place.
Why will the soldier shoot civilians without question? For various reasons. In this case, after evaluating the situation.
1. Is the soldier thinking for his safety or for other’s safety? Will you take that chance of leaving them be only to risk spreading to millions? Like save 2 lives only to risk millions. Again, how do you know? Are you a Scientist or Medical Doctor? Not exactly specialized in knowing how they work & certainly not his field of expertise.
He said “Sorry” meaning he means it. Why say that after he shot them? Even the tone of his voice is the guilt. Living with that kind of choice is tough. He didn’t ask for this but he made his choice for the greater good aside from just containment orders. For all we know, that soldier might be 18yrs. old minimum. Can’t see clearly but it’s a possibility. That could’ve been a son or father or husband of somebody.
2. Not everyone is truthful. Civilians could be lying just for their own sake & again risk millions of lives. The selfishness of people doing whatever it takes to survive. For example, COVID-19 I heard people avoiding to be detected cuz they know they’re showing symptoms that their positive. Get on a ship or whatever transportation you can find & end up spreading the infection. Coughing, touching, etc. Feel bad knowing that kids end up getting from those kind of people.
However, it’s understandable when it comes to your instinct of fear making decisions. Allowing fear to dictate our choices is not always something you realize right away. Imagine you can’t see your family and friends just cuz somebody on board unchecked is on the same boat or airplane with you. Thinking how you got it is sometimes really someone near you that got you into that situation in the first place.
Lastly, Quarantine means:
(N) - a state, period, or place of isolation in which people or animals that may have been exposed to infectious disease are placed.
(V) - place (a person or animal) in quarantine in order to prevent the spread of an infectious disease.
- remain apart from others for a period of time in order to prevent the transmission of an infectious disease to which one may have been exposed.
My point, it doesn’t mean checking/verifying who’s infected. That’s why the military will not risk anyone escaping the area without first understanding how the virus works. Basically, it’s a different term for prison but it sure acts like one regardless.
In the video game that barn was burning on the right side of the road not on Sarah’s left shoulder. I’ve played the game that much i know all the changes

You might be right with thinking the infection spread through cookies! The current theory is that it spread through flour. They didn't eat any flour products throughout the day and the radio mentions Jakarta (the biggest flour mill in the world).

I wonder how the spores survived the heat of cooking. I know they've adapted to live inside our bodies, but direct heat and low humidity should make the spores unviable. I think it should have been spread by uncooked food like lettuces and the like. If it can't be killed by cooking, you're screwed unless it can only live on wheat and no other products.

No. If the dog is running away not wanting to go inside the house and the door is open there’s no way I’m walking inside that house. Immediately I would think there’s a intruder in there and I would be scared that the person heard me yell “mercy” and I’d run far away not even back inside my house because if the intruder thinks I witnessed something they might come into my house to tie up loose ends. That would be my mindset not going to see if my neighbors were okay😂

I always believed that Ellie is fowl mouthed because she, like many young people who curse, think using "adult language" makes them appear more mature and "tough". They will used it to assert independence, maturity and even to challenge authority too.

It's hard to judge the show if you've played the game. I'm enjoying the show a lot though, but I can't separate it from the game. Nice to see people enjoying the show 😊
I hope the rest of the series is as strong as this opening. They cut the right balance between keeping the scenes intact that they need to and expanding on the world and characters so far. I'm holding my breath though since I've seen promising adaptations totally tank despite the first episode being good before.

As someone who has played both games, and the first two versions of Part 1 (not including the PS5 remake) I really love how similar the story is. Now obviously there are some differences and that may be because this is a show and not a video game. So things play out differently from a viewer to someone who can interact in the world. Yet I don't have a whole lot of gripe with the differences I think they play out really well for the narrative. It is also nice to know that the creators of the game are also co-creators of the show too. So that helps it stay similar to how the story played out in the game.
The Last of Us is a really good take and concept of a zombie apocalypse. This idea of an already existing fungus that infects quite a lot of different insects mainly known ants to eventually evolve and affect us is really quite terrifying. Let alone the fact of how it works is that in the first stage known as a "Runner" the person that was infected isn't actually dead and becomes more of a spectator of their own body of sorts. They are still fully aware of everything happening, but having no control over their body is quite terrifying to think about.
I really think they did great on the casting so far, all the characters that I already know still feel the same way they do in the games is perfect. Pedro Pascal does a great job as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie does so far a superb job giving Ellie the same fury she has in the game, while still being a kid who is still unknown to the world around her. Marlene's actress Merle Dandridge is the same actress, and Gabriel Luna does a good job making Tommy still feel like Tommy.
So far what a fantastic premiere episode and I can't wait to get into the second episode which came out today January 22, 2023.

It's a privilege to see the reactions of 3 generations, but the "interference" in the image is annoying... Other than that, it's quite an interesting experience. I'll be delving into this series for a while. I've watched it hundreds of times, but I'm still interested in the reactions of others to what's being presented.
