As you talk into the mic you should see the audio levels in the camera moving up and down if you have that feature on your camera. The first thing to check and still I make this mistake myself all the time, make sure the lead is plugged into the mic in and not the headphone jack.
Hi Andrew - great video! I'm a rookie, do you think it's better to connect SM7B to Camera (Sony a6400) or connect SM7B directly to a mac have a separate audio file? I'm looking for a simple setup with not a lot of moving parts. And if you suggest conencting the mic to the laptop, what do I use to record the audio? I'm using Final Cut to edit my videos. Thank you!
Here's how I do it, I connect my mic directly to my Mac and my camera connects to my Mac via HDMI to a converter. So technically I have a separate audio supply, but here is where I use Ecamm ( here's a link: bit.ly/3pTMBfT ) with Ecamm I can add a delay of about 5 frames so my video and audio sync perfectly. Ecamm then takes the video and the audio and blends them into one file that can be edited in any video editor. 95% of my workflow is done like this and it works really well. Before I record and it's kind of an old habit I clap my hands 3 times, this way I can double check that my audio and video are in sync by matching the coming together of my hands with the sound of the clap in my video editing program. You could of course not use Ecamm and sync the audio and video up in Final Cut Pro, but now you've got to capture the audio, import it and mess about matching the right audio up with the right video, which frankly is way to much work for me.

Can got do the video of connecting the new Shure SM7BD? I tried connecting it to my Sony camera with their new adapter and it picks up a tone of background noise
Bars don't pick any sound when I do this. I have a Focusrite and Sony A6400 with your same cable, put in the right places (mic, not headphone), but when I connect it, no matter what I do, on the camera the audio levels stay at 0
I bought the 1/4 inch to 3.5mm cable and tried the exact setup you did and it didn't work. I have the Shure sm7b plugged into my scarlet interface and there was no audio coming from that to my Sony zve-10. The cable is pretty much useless now.
I need your help. I have spent 8 hours+ to get this right. I have Focusrite Solo. I can only register sound on CH1 and not CH2 on my Zony ZV-e10, as is being seen on at 3:08 in the video. There is no sound registration for CH2. Why??? I don't understand what I am doing wrong. Please help me.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy thanks for your reply. Direct monitor is turned on my focusrite solo. Well, not sure whether is the left or the right. However, my problem is that when I speak in SM7B, my camera (Sony ZV-e10) registers only sound on chanel 1(CH1) and not in chanel 2 (CH2), which is not the case in your video at the 3:08 mark. You register audio in both CH1 and CH2. Sorry, if it is hard to understand, I am new to this. I needs to register audio in both CH1 and CH2 to work properly, right?
Could be the cable, if you're recording the audio for playback later it's really easy to fix in post-production. I'm not sure why this is happening to you.
I have just subscribed to your channel. I have purchased this mic yesterday with scarlet solo and cloudlifter, but i am trying to get voice like you but struggling to get , can you please tell how you did it?
Without seeing your setup and being able to hear what's happening it would be hard for me to tell you exactly. However, here are a few points that may help. First, make sure the mic is quite close to your mouth - about 2 to 3". Do a recording directly to your computer, does that sound OK? If it does something is likely happening in the camera - which camera do you have? The trick is to make sure the camera is not really doing any of the audio boosting, turn the input volume down in the camera and then use the Scarlet to boost the audio levels, this will give you a much cleaner signal.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks brother I appreciate your help, It's solved now, can you please tell how are you recording this current video? is that same method which you are showing, or you are merging audio and video in post? , and what are you using zoom h6 or Scarlett solo
@@OfficialAashishMaru I normally use my mic, which most of the time is a Rode NTG3 Shotgun mic, because I don't like the mic in the shot. I connect the mic to a Zoom H6 and I then run the H6 into my camera via a standard audio cable ( as detailed in this video: ruclips.net/video/DZeERiN_LYo/видео.html ), I could if I liked record the audio and video separately and sync in post, but I keep forgetting to hit record on the Zoom, so I had to make my process idiot proof.
Gonna start recording videos soon...have the Maono PDX400 and going to get a DSLR..wondered how do i do direct connect/or via my Motu M2 so that i dont need the post process synching.....life saver. Thank you sir.
When I do this it records the video from the pc and not the mic. Like it records your voice from this clip and not mine talking in the mic. Can u help me why?
Is there a specific reason to use the headphone output and not the line outputs in the back of Focusrite? With the right cable you can plug in both L & R and plug the cable in the camera's mic input. Are there differences? I've used the line output method and it works just fine, but was wondering if there's any perks on using the headphone output.
Line out is different, in short it's a lot louder, so much so that it can damage your camera, if you use line out directly into a camera or other device you need to use an attenuation cable to correct the level of the audio or connect to a device that can take a line out feed
I’ve done everything to try and get my camera and mic working together. My audio sounds like crap if I plug the jack from pre amp into camera, OBS doesn’t pick up audio, audition doesn’t let you import video. One guy said to buy a single jack another said to by to duel, bought both and both sound like crap when hooking camera to mic.
I have a problem, when I connect my headset to the focusrite, it gives me all the audio from my computer and everything, but when I switch it so I connect the headphone jack to the xlr cable input on the focusrite, it gives me no audio at all but the microphone works.
Thanks for the tip! So when I do this there is a strong "humming sound" in the background of the video. I can reduce most of it by using voice isolation on final cut pro, but not entirely. Any tips on what to adjust to get rid of this? Thanks!
@@joeythedietitian Sounds like it may be a electrical grounding issue, try running your camera just from a battery and see if that helps. Does this work with the Scarlett solo? I’m using the same cord, sm7b, and a7siii with no luck. 100% I am plugged into the mic port and not the headphone port
Hi Andrew, good video. I have purchased the cables and focus rite. I do have a question. How do I then connect my Shure mic sm7b mic to my Rodecaster pro of the mic cable is now going into the focus rite?
Hello Adam, You would not need to use a Focusrite if you have a Rodecaster Pro, the Rodcaster is also a audio interface, but you should be able to connect to the camera from the headphone out jack. I've never used the Rodecaster, thought about getting one but for my setup I'm struggling to justify it. No doubt I will at some point give in and buy one because I like shiny new stuff
Great video ! My question is can i do the same thing but with Audient - ID4-MKII instead of Focusrite ? Because i dont see direct monitoring button on Audient - ID4-MKII
Thos didn’t work for me 😢 When I change the settings, connect everything and plug it into the camera mic jack, the volume levels on the camera stop moving
@@CourseBuildersAcademy I wish that was the issue. My camera doesn’t have headphone out, only mic in. The 6.35mm cable is plugged into my Focusrite and the other end is in the mic input of my camera. I record audio on my Shure daily so I know that part is set up right. Just wish the camera connection would work :( But thanks for responding!
@@RoxiieSays So, if you plugged a headset into the headphone out jack on the Focusrite can you hear audio? Just trying to figure out if it's the camera, the cable or the Focusrite that is not playing ball.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy yes exactly! When I plug headphones into that jack I can hear and record vocals perfectly. But when I plug into my camera (Canon SL2) the sound waves on the camera stop. Maybe my camera is too old of a model?
Hello Roxiie, here's what I 've found the audio with the beginner range of the Canon camera to have quite a few issues and this is likely the cause. I seem to remember a lot of the Canon cameras also don't pass audio via HDMI which is silly. For years I used Canon cameras, but silly things like this drove me to Panasonic and Sony, I really wish Canon would address things like this.
Mr sweeny this video was a revelation to me as a newbie with all this gear!! And i am yet to test it all waiting for my cable to reach !! Hey Andrew, I used the same exact setup and cable as you, but my camera isn't picking up the sm7b through the Focusrite. Any settings on the camera that might be causing this problem? I have the Focusrite powered by usb C into my Mac laptop. (I also use a cloud lifter).
Make sure the Direct Monitor switch on the Focusrite is turned to On. And the one I see the most, make sure the cable is plugged into the Mic input on the camera and not the Headphones
Bought the chord and this is simply not working for me. When I connect the chord from my audio interface (Focusrite) to my Sony ZV-e10 as shown in video I'm gettin no audio. FRUSTRATING! Can anyone help?
Exactly the what I was looking to do except with a Logitech Sona and Motu M2. I was like how can I get it from the interface to the camera and this answers exactly that, thank you.
i have the same setup with a Sony ZV E10 but i cant connect the Mic to my Camera because it is not capturing any sound. Does anyone has faced the same problem and know how to solve it?
Just make sure you're plugging in to the Mic in socket and not the headphones socket ( I'm always doing that, after shooting videos for over 20 years )
@@renejozic Make sure the direct monitor button is active, if it's not that check the cable is OK - let me know how you get on, questions like this help me create better training - so thank you!
Hey you recommended this video however I am still not quite clear. You made mention of the audio cable so how do I connect it to my camera and the Shure mic? The mvx7 only have the the outlet with the three spoke out looking thingy.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy so all I need now is getting an xlr cable adapter that will act as a bridge between the xlr cable which goes into the Shure mic, and the cable you recommended in this video which will now go into my camera. Is this the logic?
@@TimoRoseNDFilms Yes that's correct, you will need the audio cable, an XLR cable and an audio interface like the Focusrite 2i2. Also, make sure you turn on direct monitoring on the focusrite
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks but you did not talk about or made use of any focusrite on your video. I just checked Amazon to see what that is, it’s a box like looking device like the elgato wave xlr. So you mean I should get the focursrite device as well?
The Zoom H6 can act as an interface, I use it like this all the time. You will need to get yourself a FetHead or Cloudlifter with the SM7B. The FetHead is a lot cheaper is does the job just as well IMO: www.tritonaudio.com/product/fethead/
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thank you for the reply. I'm getting Sm7db as it has an internal preamp! Do I still need a fethead? Do I get the same quality using Zoom H6 as if I'm using an interface 4i4? I'm trying to get out the best of the expensive mic!
@@ShadiZanoon I would get the SM7b and if it's not loud enough then get the FetHead - you will most likely need one, but do a test first. IMO the H6 is amazing and pretty much does what the 4i4 will do plus a whole lot more, I could write a list of all the extra useful things it does but it would be a long list, I would be totally lost without mine. I even bought a spare one in case they stop making it or go out of business.
@CourseBuildersAcademy Hey! Great video. Can I setup my Shure SM7B with my Sony Z Ev-10? I bought the Amazon Basics 3.5 mm Male to Male Stereo Audio Aux Cable. Will this be enough?
I myself prefer the Zoom, I demonstrate this in this video Amazing Audio Direct To Camera The Easy Way! - Works with any Camera. Zoom H6 to DSLR ruclips.net/video/DZeERiN_LYo/видео.html
None whatsoever. You should still use the Cloud Lifter or another Pre Amp similar to the Cloud Lifter like the Fet Head ( which is a much cheaper and works great )
@@CourseBuildersAcademy I just tried this with the exact cables in your description and unfortunately did not work. Used a Cloud lifter, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen, sony a7iv and identical in camera audio settings. Would you have any suggestions on what to examine closely by chance?
no it did not work for the sony a7iv. I just ended up recording the audio and video seperately using logic pro and finalcut. Its actually not bad with finalcut, you click one button and the audio and video syncs automatically@@TimoRoseNDFilms
great video. i am using a nikon d90 to attempt this and i cannot seem to find any audio recording settings on this camera. and when i plug in the mic with the cord you mentioned, the video still uses the onboard sound. i am using a focusrite 18i8 and have the cord plugged into the second headphone jack, the first being my headphones for monitor. am i simply doing something wrong? or does the nikon d90 not work this way even though it takes video? appreciate any feedback!
Nikon is one camera I've never used, I used most others but never a Nikon. I would be amazed if you couldn't. Just make sure you are plugging it into the MIC IN and not the HEADPHONE OUT on the camera!
So all you need is: • Shure SM7B • Cloudlifter • Focusrite • DSLR / Mirrorless Camera Correct? Do you not need a computer to power anything? Or will it work fine with the above list of items, no computer necessary?
That's correct, if you want to save some money you can get a FetHead instead of a Cloud Lifter that will save you $100 and it's just as good. Also IMO the Rode Pro Caster XLR mic sounds almost identical to the SM7B ( I have both ), in fact, I only bought the SM7B because I have "shiny object syndrome". The benefit of connecting your mic directly to your camera is the audio and video come through together and there is no issue with syncing up later, works great if you live stream too.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thank you for taking the time to write all that, i really appreciate it! I have one more question if that's cool - you mentioned the FetHead which i did some research on, and it seems to be this tiny thing that kind of looks like an XLR cable head? So does this mean i could theoretically have BOTH a CloudLifter and FetHead together in the same set up? Would this improve the overall quality? Or is there just no point to this? I've been waiting 2 years to return to RUclips and i want to come back with the ultimate set up, ultimate quality, ultimate content 😂😂😂😂 so I don't mind spending a bit extra, i've had years to plan my new content, so i want to make everything as professional as possible to match all the new content i have planned 😎 Thanks again !
@@NuttyJun No, don't get the Fethead and the Cloudlifter. The Fethead does exactly what the Cloudlifter does for half the price - I have both and IMO there is zero difference. The problem with the mics like the SM7B and the Rode Pro Caster is they need a lot of power to drive them, otherwise, the audio is really low, the Cloudlifter or the Fethead give the audio a boost without introducing noise to the signal. I'd save the money and get the Fethead. Just a note, the SM7B or the Rode Pro Caster do not require Phantom Power, but the Fethead/cloudlifter do, so you need to turn on Phantom Power - don't worry, it's not passed to the mic, it's used to boost the signal.
Can you describe the set up? SM7B is connected to the Focusrite, which is then connected to the camera via a 1/4 to 3.5 adapter? Where does the cloudlifter fit in? Thanks
@@CourseBuildersAcademy -- Thanks, Andrew, for the reply. Also, do you think that this microphone is good for making videos in which I'm further away from the microphone? I know that it is great for podcasting when I am right up on the microphone. Thanks
@@drhoangmd No not really, this mic is best used when between 2 and 8" from the mic, the sound very quickly drops off. You would be much better with a Shotgun mic, I use the Rode NTG3 or the Sennheiser MKH 416, both are great mics and sound very similar - the Rode is cheaper.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy -- Thank you so much for your great insight and advice. I looked into shotgun microphones. Have you used the Sennheiser MK50? Is it worth the extra money? Thanks, Andrew.
@@drhoangmd I would doubt it, sure it may ( and likely does ) sound a little better, but not $900 better. High end mics need high end speakers and headphones to hear the difference, if the vast number of your viewers are on mobile devices or using consumer level speakers and headphones there will be almost no difference at all
I love your videos. You’re so easy to follow, you get right the point, and it’s enjoyable. Thank you. I’ve done all of this - thank you! In zoom do I then select the camera as the audio (I’m using Camlink) or still Scarlett 2i2 USB? Similarly, if using ECamm would I use the ECamm virtual mic? (And in ECamm do I set up the mic as Camlink not Scarlett 2i2?)
If you are plugging the mic into the camera you would select the Camlink as the audio source in Zoom. If I was using Ecamm however I wouldn’t connect the mic directly to the camera, I would connect it to the Focusrite and then in Ecamm add a delay of about 5 frames so it syncs with the video. To get the audio and video out of Ecamm to Zoom I would use the virtual camera and virtual mic
@@CourseBuildersAcademy thank you. The problem I’ve had is that when I add the mic delay - 5 or 6 frames - and use the ECamm virtual camera and audio it still doesn’t look fully synched in zoom to the other person(s) even though when I record the zoom call it looks fine to me.
You don’t need to plug it into your computer, you just a way to power the usb interface, which you can do from a powered USB dock if you like without a computer.
Hi Andrew, Thanks a lot for the guide and your other great videos! I have a Shure SM7B and a Sony ZV E10. If I follow your guide and use the Shure as the external mic to the ZV E10 and record videos, everything sounds as good as I expected. But if the USB cable is also plugged into the camera, there a LOT of static. Someone below mentioned that the same thing happens if the HDMI cable is in. So if this happens, is it possible to use this approach when e.g. streaming or a Zoom call? In those cases the USB or HDMI cables have to be plugged in to the camera.
This seems to be a problem with some of the Sony cameras, I have 2 ZVE 10s and both are fine, a friend of mine has the same issue as you. There are a couple of ways to fix this without messing about with the camera and hoping different cables fix it. 1. Use a product like Ecamm ( bit.ly/3pTMBfT ) to record the audio and video, you can add an offset in Ecamm so the audio and video are in sync. You can output to Zoom from Ecamm as Ecamm also has a built-in virtual camera and mic. Ecamm also has a ton of other features, the problem is this is a Mac-only solution - this is what I use for Zoom calls and all my recordings ( including my RUclips vids ). 2. Use an interface like a Focusrite to connect the mic to the computer via USB. But mics like the SM7B do require a lot of gain and if you're not already, you need to buy something like a Fethead or Cloudlifter to boost the signal ( the Fethead is much cheaper and does the same job ). It's not just the budget Sony cameras this happens to, some of the expensive A7s also exhibit this issue, it's really annoying for a company that is a world leader in the production of cameras.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks a lot for the detailed reply! I am trying something along the lines of what you suggested to do with Ecamm. I'm on a Windows/Linux machine so Ecamm is not an option but it looks like this is possible with OBS too. I have a Cloudlifter and Focusrite Scarlett Solo, which plugs into the computer via USB, and into which I plug the SM7b and that works great in general but the video from the ZV E10 and the audio from the SM7B are off by around 100ms. That's not a problem if I am not do something live because I can easily fix the offset in post processing, but that lag is very offputting during live meeting. That was main reason I wanted the SM7B to connect to the ZV E10 and then in e.g. Zoom, I would use the ZV E10 as both the mic and the video device. But that requires a USB or HDMI from the ZV E10 and that is causing the static.
@@CourseBuildersAcademyJust for info and in case it helps others, I managed to eliminate the static that I originally experienced when plugging the SM7B into the ZV E10 and then streaming from the ZV E10 via USB . The static only occurs only when the USB cable into my Focusrite Scarlett Solo audio interface is plugged into the same computer into which I am plugging the ZV E10. In other words, initially I had Computer

Now, wondering if it works for phones or not. I will attempt the method on my Nikon Z7 ii after I figure this out.
Update: This method does in fact work for my Samsung Galaxy Note 9, iPhone 12 and iPad. The reason it did not work at first was because of a faulty 1/4" adapter. What is the model of the focusrite you got? I am looking to buy one
I bought the 1/4 inch to 3.5mm cable and tried the exact setup you did and it didn't work. I have the Shure sm7b plugged into my scarlet interface and there was no audio coming from that to my Sony zve-10. The cable is pretty much useless now.
Make sure you switch on Direct monitoring on the Focusrite
@@CourseBuildersAcademy what if my Focusrite does not have headphone volume adjustment?
But How can I preview the audio quality while am recording via camera
I need your help. I have spent 8 hours+ to get this right. I have Focusrite Solo. I can only register sound on CH1 and not CH2 on my Zony ZV-e10, as is being seen on at 3:08 in the video. There is no sound registration for CH2. Why???
I don't understand what I am doing wrong. Please help me.
Is there a switch that says Direct Monitor? If so turn it on
Or are you saying you’re only getting audio in the left and not the right
@@CourseBuildersAcademy thanks for your reply.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy you were right. I was using a mono cable, lol. I'm buying a stereo cable today. Thanks for your help!

Hey I was wondering if this is doable using the GOXLR? I use a nikon z30 trying to see what is best way to get my shure to work with it.
Is there a way to monitor the audio with headphones whilst recording?
When I do this it records the video from the pc and not the mic. Like it records your voice from this clip and not mine talking in the mic. Can u help me why?
Ah had to push direct monitor also!!! thank you!!!
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Ok thanks. Somehow the output volume knob still affects on the volume, so it might not be a "traditional" line out.

Thanks!

@@CourseBuildersAcademy Cheers for getting back to me. Could you please briefly explain how this could be connected to my Rode caster pro? Thanks

You need the one that does not pass phantom power through, which is the more common version

Hello Roxiie, here's what I 've found the audio with the beginner range of the Canon camera to have quite a few issues and this is likely the cause. I seem to remember a lot of the Canon cameras also don't pass audio via HDMI which is silly. The Zoom H6 can act as an interface, I use it like this all the time. You will need to get yourself a FetHead or Cloudlifter with the SM7B. The FetHead is a lot cheaper is does the job just as well IMO: www.tritonaudio.com/product/fethead/

Nikon is one camera I've never used, I used most others but never a Nikon. I would be amazed if you couldn't. Just make sure you are plugging it into the MIC IN and not the HEADPHONE OUT on the camera!
So all you need is:
• Shure SM7B
• Cloudlifter
• Focusrite
• DSLR / Mirrorless Camera
Correct?
I've been waiting 2 years to return to RUclips and i want to come back with the ultimate set up, ultimate quality, ultimate content 😂😂😂😂 so I don't mind spending a bit extra, i've had years to plan my new content, so i want to make everything as professional as possible to match all the new content i have planned 😎

Awesome sir thank you 🙏
Most welcome
Can you describe the set up? SM7B is connected to the Focusrite, which is then connected to the camera via a 1/4 to 3.5 adapter? Where does the cloudlifter fit in? Thanks
The Cloudlifter goes between the mic and the Focusrite. I prefer the Fethead, it’s more compact, just as good and its a lot cheaper.

@@markandrews4898 you can put an audio offset in OBS
@@CourseBuildersAcademyJust for info and in case it helps others, I managed to eliminate the static that I originally experienced when plugging the SM7B into the ZV E10 and then streaming from the ZV E10 via USB . The static only occurs only when the USB cable into my Focusrite Scarlett Solo audio interface is plugged into the same computer into which I am plugging the ZV E10. In other words, initially I had Computer
@@markandrews4898 thank you for that. I will bear that in mind
Mic works perfectly this way except I have constant static :( I am connecting from my 2i2 through cloud lifter, tried everything but still static, no static when I just use my shure sm7b with the 2i2, only static when I connect it to my Sony ZV e10
You have something else plugged to your Zv e 10
I connected the way you explained to my volt 2 interface, but I am hearing a bit of sound disturbance. I use a Sony ZV1
Sounds like it could be a grounding issue, try a different cable and see if it still does it when you're running everything of battery power
