This was a massive help for me in setting up my Shure MV7 to my ZV-E10 II. Went 3.5mm to 3.5mm as you said. Found that I had to turn my internal mic volume down lower to 1. Thanks so much for making it!
You saved my set up and endless hours of research and frustration! THANK YOI SIR ! 😊I have a shuremv7 and white ZVE-10 Sony camera. Bought the right cable. thank you 🎉
Thank you, Andrew!! I wish I stumbled on this video earlier. Spent a long time trying figure how to properly connect my MV7 with my Sony ZV-1F. Conducted many different tests, and some didn't even produce any audio lol... I followed your steps of setting gain on both mic and headphones to 6 illuminated dots on MV7 and camera gain down to 4. Seemed to work very well but I think there are still a few minor tweaks to make.
What I've found for myself is that I was trying to connect male to male 3.5mm to my shure MV7, as well as HDMI cable to my PC from my camera to mirror everything i film on the screen. However the sound was awfully buzzzing as some of the guys mentioned here. As soon as I have pulled out the HDMI from my camera, 3.5mm to 3.5mm works like magic. Main thing to reduce camera audio levels to 1 (I have sony a7iii), also I've set mic for 30dB and set my level of output (yellowish colour dots on microphone) to somewhere around the lalf
Great vídeo, Andrew! What mic are you using to record this video? The sound is just perfect! I'm looking for a microphone that doesn't pick up my air conditioner noise while recording and isn't seen in the frame. Greetings from South America!
I'm using a Shotgun mic ( Rode NTG3 ) in this video, but this is unlikely to not pick up your air con, it may very well not pick it up as much as a mic like the Yeti due to the narrow pick-up pattern. If you're recording it's going to be better to use a decent shotgun mic and leave a couple of seconds at the start of each recording where you don't speak and use that to grab a background noise sample and simply remove it in a program like Audacity ( which is free ), or Adobe Audition, there are lots of tutorials on RUclips on this and it's really easy to do.
Awesome! I’ve been recording my audio separately in garage band and it adds an extra step. This is a great option to skip that part. I’m debating getting a separate mic for my camera or using my shure mv7. I’ll try this out and see what I come up with.
Great video Andrew, thank you!! Ive just spend hours configuring a Elgato wave 3 to my Sony ZV-E10 and trying to get rid of a "buzzing sound". If only I had found this video earlier. Finally sorted it by reducing the LV on the camera. It would be interesting to see how the Shure MV7 compares to the Elgato wave 3
The Elgato Wave 3 is a nice mic and will serve you well. As you have found the pre-amps in lower-end cameras ( sub $3k ) are not fit for purpose! Why they don't just fix it and stick $50 on the price of the camera I really don't know. One tip, play with the distance of the mic from your mouth, the closer you get it the better it will sound, but too close and you'll get popping.
This is the first video and I really enjoyed it. This is 10 out of 10. I'm going to buy a mic to use for A) live online classes where I teach via Zoom and B) to create RUclips videos at my desk. I was looking at the Sure SM7B + Cloudlifter + Focusrite Scarlet + SBX 286s (a channel strip processor). The MV7 could go straight into the PC via USB and it has some built in sound correction.. Would the viewers be able to tell the difference?
The SM7B is a very good mic, let's talk about that first If I was going to use a SM7B and I do from time to time, here's the setup I would start with SM7B Fethead ( cheaper than Cloudlifter and does exactly the same thing with no difference in quality ) I'd run that to the Focusrite. As for the DBX286s I wouldn't bother to start with, I'd see what it sounded like without that. I used to run into a DBX286s connected to a 166xs and frankly it was just a lot of messing about for a minor improvement. If I was going to set this up now I'd save the money on the Cloudlifter/Fethead, the Focusrite and the DBX and just get the Rode Pro Caster 2 and have everything in one box. But before I did that, before I even thought about buying a SM7B and opening up a world of complexity, I would indeed buy the MV7 and see what it sounds like, I think you'll find you get pretty much the result you're looking for at a lower price and without the hassle. Buy it from Amazon and if you don't like it you can just send it back.
Awesome video! QUESTION: I am getting some overhead feedback even with the audio recording floor set to zero. Sony a6600. Shure says "we recommend disabling the bias voltage supplied by the camera" but no idea how to accomplish this after scouring the interwebs. Thanks for all of your help 👍
@@davidjaetucker This may not be bias voltage which BTW is also more commonly called "Plug-In Power" it could be a grounding issue or something as simple as a bad cable or connector. If you have a Laptop I would try it just running on battery power and see if the problem still exists
Great vid. Your setup is superb. Great lens, lighting, sound quality, and super clear and useful advice of course. I bought a Shure MV7+ Mic. I have a Canon 90D DLR camera. Can you recommend which cable I need to use to connect the Mic to my Canon? As the cable that comes with the Mic doesn't fit. Any other recommendations welcome.
you need a audio cable with a 3.5mm pin on each end. It should be TRS not TRRS like this www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Headphone-Auxiliary-Compatible-Earphone-Silver/dp/B088CZLHGL/ you should also make sure you plug it in the "MIC" input on the camera and not the Headphones socket - easy mistake to make that is

Thanks for the video, I have the mv7x it’s doesn’t have the usb outlet or the headphone outlet either. I am using the Sony A74 camera what is my cheap option to linking the mic to my camera?
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thanks. Alternatively I do have the go 2 wireless mic. Someone once mentioned that I could also use it as a form of mixer with the Shure mic and connect to my camera. Please do you know how to go about this logic?
Sharing my experience here: I’m trying to connect a MV7X (the previous version without usbc, only xlr) to my Sony a7iii via 3.5mm male to male jack, and to my MacBook with the shure XLR to USBC adaptor but it’s so buzzy it can’t be used. I tried everything but can’t get rid of the buzzy background. While instead, recording on MacBook via usbc is fine. The buzz is only on the 3.5mm wire. I changed the wire too with an Apple 45$ 3.5mm to lighting to listen in my AirPod max and the buzzy background is there too. My conclusion is, I suspect with the XLR to USBC shure converter connected to laptop there are background buzzes generated. I tried connecting it to a battery but seems to not work. After digging more on RUclips I think that only the MV7 (with usb built in port as the one in your video) works smooth straight to camera without buzzing sounds. So the conclusion is, guys, buy the model in the video with the leds and buttons and usbc, and not the older version.
I'm just in the process of editing a video on doing this but going in to the camera with a BeachTek which is a cheap interface but with high-quality pre-amps, I've used this with Sony cameras ( ZVE10 and A6400 ) with success and it also offers a host of other benefits too, it should be released in the next week.
Awesome content! Now the question is, when plugged to the camera and computer at the same time, can you still use the features of the app to change the audio, like applying compressor, limiter, EQ etc. or you only plug it to the computer just to power it and cannot tinker with it?
I used a shotgun mic the Rode NTG3. The only reason I did't use the MV7 is because personally I don't like the mic in the shot and I move about a bit, a Shotgun is perfect for when you want the mic a little further away and off camera. But from a quality standpoint the MV7 can and does sound just as good as my shotgun mic. I also have sound panels on the walls that I made. Good audio depends not just the mic but the the room you are in and the correct positioning of the mic to your mouth. I have a free guide that covers all this kind of stuff and the equipment I use: bit.ly/3DGNOLw

Hi Vic, which camera is it. Is your camera running from the mains or via battery, have you made looked to see if any of your audio cables are crossing over powerleads or touching anything that could affect the audio signal. If you have the MV7 USB you don't need a 2i2 or cloudlifter. If you connect via a 2i2 the computer will see the mic as a 2i2 and not the MV7
@@CourseBuildersAcademy i got it thankyou for you comment
What if your camera doesn’t have the sound card input. I have a Sony A5100
I don't think that is going to work for you, you'll have to record the audio to another device and sync it in post production to the video
I connected my camera directly to the mv7 and I didn’t know what was causing a buzzing……the problem was coming from the camera working on a mains lead rather than a battery. The camera on battery power….no more buzzing🥰
@@MarieAtkinsonEvolveWithYoga that may mean you have a grounding issue
@@CourseBuildersAcademyI’ll check it out, thanks so much,
You saved my ass!
doesnt work at all with the Sony ZV1FBDI
Camera doesn’t even recognize the mic! It doesn’t light up or anything. This didn’t work unfortunately.
You still need to connect the mic by USB to a computer
An 8th for Americans, half quarter if you're Canadian lol
Really helpful. Thanks.
thanks you so much
Can this be done with the Sony a5100?
I can't see why not, I've used it on the following ZVe10, A6400, A6600, Canon C300, BMPK 4k, GH5, GH5s, GH6, FX9 and I've never run into any issues with the huge array of cameras I use
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Ok, maybe it meeds a mic jack. The a5100 only has a micro USB and HDMI.
