Hi thanks for the video I have a cannon r6 and I was going to purchase the rode boom pole and the rode ntg4 with the h5 and im confused on how I can capture the audio already synced with the video so I don't have to sync the audio files separately
King! This guy is king! No bullshit intro music-video bullshit. He goes straight to the point. Learn from him! Great content, great value. 10/10. Liked, subscribed and commented!
I definitely noticed the difference, the RAW sounds much cleaner. I say that, having just watched this on my old MacBook Pro without headphones, with the sound of birds, traffic and wind blowing outside.
Hi, old vid but I hope you take the time to answer me. I just got the Sennhieser MKE600 for my Canon M6 MkII and have a xlr to 3.5 mm cable plugged directly into my camera. Would it make sense to add a preamp like the one you shown here? Since the MKE600 has its own phantom power !! Would a preamp improve sound quality in your opinion? Thanks//Robert
I match the meters with a 1khz tone from the H5. Also send the signal to the Camara But a nice beep tone from the H5 when it starts recording makes sync a breeze and use the high quality audio from the H5. Great video!
Yo, this video really helped me understand a lot of things I was ignoring as a documentary filmmaker for years!! Really appreciate the amount of value in this under 10 minute video!
Baked-in actually sounds better, but it's just because you didn't adjust the raw wav volume to match the loudness of built in audio. The 1-stage audio data-compression trick is super cool, thanks!
yeah, well it sounds richer but actually the flatter signal of the uncompressed is the better signal because it can be worked better. But I hear you I like the baked in sound too, but his point was it was the raw file, that can then be produced in post to make you sound like god.
I hear the difference for sure. This is a great tutorial. I have an H5N which I was using to go into my laptop then syncing the wav file after recording. I'm definitely going to switch over to this method. Thanks!
Dude! You should consider what Fuji does with their cameras and allows you to select line level or mic level for the microphone port. I select line level and use a very good external Sound Source and this is all RUclips needs for the highest quality conversion
Hi, great video! I'm working on this very thing right now. I'm a musician looking to make my own promo videos DIY style, and I just bought a Lumix G95 camera. I'm pairing that with the beastly Zoom H8 recorder which can record in multitrack with 6 XLR/1/4inch inputs.Very good info there about the baked in audio, and potential multiple layers of compression... thanks!
Really really helpful video. Found this while looking for some alternatives to the XLR top handle for the fx30. Never thought about the additional compression with recording baked in audio. Thanks!
This is similar to the irig pro set up im using to just being able to play live drums along to backing tracks. All I needed was just the splitter cable.
Thanks for sharing this excellent video. How i can create a similar set up with out using an xlr cable and by using my rode wireless go 2 wireless microphone? Thanks
hello thanks the for your video very useful, also maybe because you use Lumix g85 in mp4 which use aac there is a loss, maybe with a better camera ? if you register in mov directly with lpcm, audio file baked inn, maybe the quality is better similar to the wav, or more close ? not sure but I continue my investigation ...if you have some thought about it thx for sharing and your time.
Great video! thank you I have a request, will you recommend the Zoom MSH-6 capsule for spoken words? or if you want to do a short video explaining? Thank you in advance.
My bro very useful information. Now I need to buy a field recorder. I got the money to either buy the zoom h6 or h8 but still not sure which one to buy. Also I am thinking of getting the sennheiser mk600 and use it all together. Probably I will sync as it sounds so much better. But thank you! I learned now that audio also has in a way raw data just as video and that can be compressed and so on. Cheers great video! :)
Outstanding thank you. 🙏 For my guitar I’ve upgraded to SM57’s, SLR cables to my Beachtek preamp to my camera. I’m hoping this is a big improvement over my shotgun mics
Hello! thanks for the video. Can I use the TRS cable to connect my Tascam directly to the camera, to speak through the Tascam so that the sound goes directly to the camera and records it there?
Thanks for the video. Helps a lot. I would like to modify this approach using the Zoom F3 and the line out connected to a Wireless GO II transmitter. Any suggestions?
An awesome video as per usual, Brian! 😆👍👍 As ever, I appreciate you for taking the time to highlight the best way to get highest quality audio possible, especially if you're wanting to use the baked in method as opposed to editing and syncing the audio & video in post-production. ☺👌 Personally, I'll always opt for the recording externally then syncing and editing in post 99.9% of the time, however, even with that being said, I'm sure there'll be occasions where the baked in method come come in handy. 🎧📷🎤 Cheers to you, my man! 🍻
Good information..Would you please explain how to sync audio from the recorder to the audio from the camera when you have two seperate recordings - my recorder was connected to a PA system and the camera was too far away.. I have to sync them in FCPx & they always go out of sync...
Need some help! I have a Sennheiser MKH 416. I want to connect it directly to my Sony ZV E10 camera and can’t figure it out. Is this the best method? Thanks in advance.
Great video...Thank you! Will this work for the following? I am trying to connect a Shure SCM-268 mixer to a Panasonic HC-V785K Camcorders’ Mic input jack. I don’t think an XLR to 3.5mm cable is a legit way to go but I would certainly appreciate your thoughts.
Thank you for your presentation. I would appreciate your feedback. I want to connect my GH-6 camera to an event sound board via an xlr (stereo) to my camera 3.5mm trs cable. would that work? Thank you for your response.
Hm, my Sony a7 III doesn’t compress audio, it puts PCM into the MP4 container. And I believe your a7 IV also doesn’t. External recording is theoretically better because of 24/32-bit float resolution, whether the camera’s audio is 16-bit.
Yes, these comments were in the context of consumer grade cameras, typically sub $1500 which is where most content creators live. You're right that my new Sony A7IV is PCM. It's beautiful.
Hi dude , you demonstrated the two way system to grab audio straight in to the camera using the audio recorder and the cam, is there a three way to add a short gun mic like the Boya Bm 6060 to that connection ?
Very well put together video, thanks for all the information. You made it easy to understand and gave me a better vision of what I need to do as a content creator.
4:00 - 4:39 That is music to my ears, that timeframe of video right there is EXACTLY what i wanted to goddamn hear 👂🤩🤩🤩 I have a Lumix G85 and i wanted to connect a Shore SM7B to it - and that part of this video nearly gave me a stiffy !! 💪🏼
I need this same solution but i need to have the external recorder record 4 channel, but i still want its line out to split the audio into 2 channels i.e. on external i have 4 mics, on the camera the sound would be 2 mics on left ,2 mics on right. the point here is if people ever talk over each other the external recording would be my safety.
If you loose quality by 3 compressions with the baked in sound, why not taking syncing all the time the sound of the camera with the H5 sound, in premiere pro it is a one min process???
Do you have a set up for an on the go video shooter? I rig up my Sony a7iii with the rode video mic, I just ordered the zoom h6, I always keep a pair of good over-the-ear headphones on me. I also shoot bts on small sets as well and I dnt have boom man. I want better sound and do want sound to sound far away. So I would need help setting that up because I have a job in a few weeks. Thx ya for video and much love from GA
Can I do this with JUST a mini xlr cable? My 3.5mm input doesn't work on my Mark iii 5D, and I want to be able to use a mic boom set up out in the field.
@Audio for Content Creators So does the H5 have phantom power? Also, if I am understanding you correctly, I want to use a Rode NTG4 shotgun mic for streaming, and after watching this it seems as if my audience won't hear any difference between the Rode and a $30 lav mic from Amazon? BTW I am on a gaming laptop and I could hear a huge difference between your audio A&B tests. The baked-in audio actually had more bass, but it sounded almost clipping and the highs were not as defined.
what about an XLR female to 3.5 male directly from boom to the camera, using NTG4+ cuz it has self phantom power.. would it be similar quality as the zoom method u showed? all the zoom is doing is giving phantom power right? the rode NTG4 + has a -10 db button option so I'm guessing is not optimal but it might work.? asking cuz I have to cover a small event with 3 handheld cameras and I'm already using a dedicated on camera mic on 2 of them but buying a new one just for this job is not worth it. or am I better off recording audio directly from the GH5, without anything attached? Thanks a lot
Hey I have a question about Zoom! I’m trying to create a professional but simple videoconferencing setup. My thought is an A6700 with 4K USB streaming with a H5 interface connecting to a MKE 600. So then everything just comes out of camera, no need for a USB audio interface, making it easy to move the setup as needed. I’m worried about the compression effects you mentioned at the end, will USB streaming from camera still compress to AAC?
Is the actual recording component on this audio recorder better than the recording device in the camera? The compressing into the MP4 aside, actual recording components compared.
Question. I got the Rode NTG5 and I have the Saramonic LC-XLR to lighting microphone adapter cable. If I was to get the H5 would I be able to connect the LC-XLR to the H5 right to my iPhone? Thank you in advance.
Is there something about syncing frames (like 4 frames) because the travel of the audio signal gets the sound very slightly behind the video (even connected)? (or is that something else?)
You never explained why/how the sync audio to video is some tedious or complex. I see pros (like you) talking about how external audio is such a pain. I'm a noob and I just do it in like 3 clicks. So I am clearly missing some level of quality or some complexity. Just curious if you were going to reveal that secret. Why do the pros claim it is some massive amount of work? Neat video but I'll stick to my select the video/select the audio and click on "sync audio/video"
Really depends on the project. If you’re doing talking head videos or a sit down interview, it’s really easy to sync everything. When you start getting to multiple cameras, multiple recorders, dozens of locations, etc. for those who aren’t well-versed in production and don’t want to take the time to make sure everything is labelled and organized correctly, they’d prefer to just have everything already together. If you vlog for an entire day where it’s let’s say 300 clips, most people don’t want the extra work of syncing all that for them/ their editor in post.
HELP ME!!!!!!!! When I connect my recorder to my camera i get NO SOUND!!!!!! I tried everything from trs to trrs cables!!!!! But when i connect my Rode wireless mics, it works perfectly!!!!!!!!
Sound better. Level up. Grab my most popular course, Audio 101 for Content Creators: audio101.info
Hey man, please do a comparison between the new Deity D4 Mini and Movo VXR10 pro. They both are same $50.
Hi thanks for the video I have a cannon r6 and I was going to purchase the rode boom pole and the rode ntg4 with the h5 and im confused on how I can capture the audio already synced with the video so I don't have to sync the audio files separately

This isn't your day job? It is my day job and I still learned some great things from this video. Cheers!
First time I have been taught about the 'compression' aspect... Thank you...
THIS IS ABSOLUTE BEST TUTORIAL ON THIS SUBJECT ON YOU TUBE, PERIOD. Many thanks!

One of the top Video's on Video Sound I have ever seen, major props.
I match the meters with a 1khz tone from the H5. Also send the signal to the Camara But a nice beep tone from the H5 when it starts
recording makes sync a breeze and use the high quality audio from the H5. Great video!
Thanks. I was wondering why my Sennheiser shotgun mic sounded better plugged into my Zoom H5 compared to when I plugged it directly into my BMPCC.
Yo, this video really helped me understand a lot of things I was ignoring as a documentary filmmaker for years!! Really appreciate the amount of value in this under 10 minute video!
Great video... some people just have the gift to make short easy understanding videos, you are one of them. Thanks
As an audio engineer, I approve of this message. Well, all of them, but this one is good too. lol
Being using this line out method recording from my podmic through Zoom Podtrak P4 to my iPhone 11 Pro
Awesome.
Baked-in actually sounds better, but it's just because you didn't adjust the raw wav volume to match the loudness of built in audio. The 1-stage audio data-compression trick is super cool, thanks!

I agree! Seems like this parallels a jpgs vs raw discussion..and jpg DOES look better straight out of the camera ...but you can surpass that with raw
I hear the difference for sure. This is a great tutorial. I have an H5N which I was using to go into my laptop then syncing the wav file after recording. I'm definitely going to switch over to this method. Thanks!
Yeah even without the compression artifacts you can tell it sounds less full. How are you syncing?
Dude! You should consider what Fuji does with their cameras and allows you to select line level or mic level for the microphone port. I select line level and use a very good external Sound Source and this is all RUclips needs for the highest quality conversion
Wow, I had no idea about compression happening three times. Thanks for that. I'm loving my H6 I got for a song and break dance on CL yesterday.

I see guitars and an amp behind you.
Maybe you can make a video like this one but recording loud amplifier
Thanks
With this method can you use more than one mic at a time?
I've searched and found this!!! The zoom is so expensive. Are there cheaper options :) thank you! Amazing video 💜💜💜
Try the Tascam DR-40X: amzn.to/3Cuzx4b
Hello! thanks for the video. Can I use the TRS cable to connect my Tascam directly to the camera, to speak through the Tascam so that the sound goes directly to the camera and records it there?
Great video Brian. Hope you’re well, mate. Steve.
Thanks for the video. Helps a lot. I would like to modify this approach using the Zoom F3 and the line out connected to a Wireless GO II transmitter. Any suggestions?
The problem I’m having now is that the sound is passing through, but there’s a lot of noise. I mean a lot! It’s unusable audio. How do I fix?
Ground issue?
An awesome video as per usual, Brian! 😆👍👍 As ever, I appreciate you for taking the time to highlight the best way to get highest quality audio possible, especially if you're wanting to use the baked in method as opposed to editing and syncing the audio & video in post-production. ☺👌

I have a job in five days. I hope you see this. Would this video be applicable to a ZH1 and a Sony A7III???
VERY NICE AND SIMPLE ! JUST WHAT I NEEDED!!

Excellent video. Thanks you! Cheers from Italy
Hello, in case you answer this, I’d be glad. Can I record from a shotgun mic to a digital recorder.
very good video. thanks. now I feel like I should use non syncing
Very well put together video, thanks for all the information. You made it easy to understand and gave me a better vision of what I need to do as a content creator.
Thank you for your work! best video!
How long does the battery last on the ZoomH5 using it as an XLR to Jack converter?
4:00 - 4:39
That is music to my ears, that timeframe of video right there is EXACTLY what i wanted to goddamn hear 👂🤩🤩🤩
I have a Lumix G85 and i wanted to connect a Shore SM7B to it - and that part of this video nearly gave me a stiffy !! 💪🏼

absolute genius workflow. superb!

do you have a link to that external mic?
My Sony ZV cam isn’t picking up my mic’s audio. Right now I’m using wireless go II. Waiting for an aux cable to line out my hn8 zoom.
Do you have a set up for an on the go video shooter? I rig up my Sony a7iii with the rode video mic, I just ordered the zoom h6, I always keep a pair of good over-the-ear headphones on me. Can Zoom H6/H5 record in its memory card and send line-out to camera at the same time?
Question: what are your thoughts on recording music?
thank you :)
The baked in audio actually sounded better 🤔
Incredibly helpful. Thank you:
Can I do this with JUST a mini xlr cable? My 3.5mm input doesn't work on my Mark iii 5D, and I want to be able to use a mic boom set up out in the field.
How would you accomplish this wirelessly? :)
Can you do this with a Scarlett interface.
Is the 'Line Out' from the recorder a direct analogue signal from the mics ?
Thanks a lot brother ❤️
Subscribed ❤️
@Audio for Content Creators So does the H5 have phantom power? Does it get recorded as a stereo channel in camera?
Very very good explained, thanks
Can I bake audio into camera and also record to my Zoom H8? In other words, have 2 audio recordings simultaneously?
Is it possible to connect a H6 to a camera for video or even a phone and live stream? Thanks
Can I skip the recorder and plug the XLR mic to my camera using an adapter?
Outstanding and Thank You !
what about an XLR female to 3.5 male directly from boom to the camera, using NTG4+ cuz it has self phantom power.. would it be similar quality as the zoom method u showed?

Oh nice. This is going to be a helpful tool.
does this work with the h1/h1n zoom?
Excellent video! Thank you!
Welcome!
Thank you! How well explained everything.

Hi
Zoom h5 is too expensive. Is there any cheaper replacement?
Lots of good knowledge nuggets here. Thank you!!
My pleasure!
Is the actual recording component on this audio recorder better than the recording device in the camera? The compressing into the MP4 aside, actual recording components compared.
Super helpful!!! Thank you.
So what XLR mic can I use to just go XLR to 3.5mm TRS directly without any recorder or power supply?
This was actually useful!
Help me out 😅
DMW XLR 2 with rode video mic pro and s5iix
hello, do you know if i can put a tentacle sync system on my Zoom H8?
