- Shure MV7 Setup, If you know how to correctly set up the Shure MV7 mic your audio will sound fantastic. Some people say the Shure MV7 is too quiet or doesn't sound as good as it could, and the likelihood is that you've incorrectly set up the MV7 without using the Shure MOTIV Desktop App.
In this video, I'll show you how to set up the MV7, and how to use the Motiv app to enrich your audio, and then I'll show a quick hack utilising an RK345 can make your MV7 sound just as good as the more expensive Shure SM7B - after which we'll take it further and really push the limits of the MV7 with some software enhancements that really make the MV7 sound amazing.

mine sounded soooo good coming out the box - butttt I was coming from a blue yeti, with ZERO tweaked settings - so the dullness of the MV7 was so welcome lol
The Yeti is a condenser mic and for the money it's a good mic, the MV7 is more forgiving when the room you're in isn't a perfect recording space, the MV7 is a dynamic mic.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way you presented this info including the final hook. smooth transitions and great idea on where to include the ECAMM part.
Thank you for covering all bases on this thing. You’re extremely thorough and easy to understand
I appreciate that!
Just got the M7, thank you for helpful hints ad tips!
I was thinking bout swapping my windscreen for the longer version from the 7B, glad to know it works.
I worked a long time with the mv7 before realizing it had software I needed to download, once I got it set up, it sounded much better
TTRFM moment :)
not even close, sm7b wins, hail for the king!
This was an incredible video! Very smooth and lovely to watch! Thank you! and Take care brother!
TY for the video. Concise, very useful, and helped a lot. I just got this mic this and your video eliminated the need to post edit everything, saving a massive amount of time. Since you asked: Yes they sounded super similar with the identical foam covers. Awesome tip!
Thank you very much for your feed back Thomas
I’m was using a GH5s with a Metabones Speedbooster to fit a Canon 30mm lens - this is total overkill. I can actually get just the same quality using a much cheaper Sony ZVE 10 with. 30mm Sigma F1.4 lens and frankly I would be better off using that. IMO dollar for dollar that little Sony takes some beating and punches way above its price
Thank you so much! I REALLY need this!
Thank you for the nice video and detailed explanation.
I love my MV7 and the upgraded pop filter is perfect!!! thanks for the info brotha 🤙🏽
No problem 👍
@@thomasgabriel1985 The pop filter is a RK345 and yes this mic would be perfect for audio guided meditations
by any chance did you have sound treating?
This is a very helpful video, thank you a lot
Glad it was helpful!
Mic quality sounds really good 👌🏽
For the money I love this little Mic, I have the more expensive SM7B and frankly it's hard to tell them apart
Have mine in Automatic atm, then take clip into Audition to capture noise print remove and EQ with parametric EQ. Final step is compressor then normalise in Davinci. Audio seems ok so far but will check out your tips too
Hello, Did you use any post audio processing for this video? The mic sounds unbelievably good lol. So much better than all of the other videos I've seen. Thanks for the video
No I don't, I should really but I'm too lazy. What I do have is a room with a few sound panels because it's got lots of hard surfaces, but other than that I don't process the sound, unless of course I'm showing how to process audio
Thanks so much! Very helpful
No worries!
Amazing video, man.
Thank you sir for the comment
Great video, thanks!
You're welcome!
Nice video. It's close comparison.
great video! keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do!
damn u got me at the end andrew ill watch the other video as well great job and thank you.
Well thank you very much
Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I purchased a Shure MV7 yesterday and didn't like the way I sound on my stream this morning. However, after watching you I just purchased the pop filter as you recommended and use the settings. I can't wait to do another stream and go live. Thanks, again!
Glad I could help!
Great video!
Thanks!
I am a content creator who's been using this mv7, love it but its always felt lacking, Ive found this video so helpful, thank you!
You're very welcome!
What do I do if the motiv app won’t download. It won’t download on my mac
Love this video. Now how would you set it up when doing things liek match commentary where you have to raise your voice significantly?
Hi Andrew, I'm enjoying your USB mic videos...much appreciated. Question: have you compared the Shure MV51 to the MV7? I know the MV51 is a condenser mic and doesn't come with a pop filter, but if I were using it at about an 18" distance, would it be a better choice over the MV7 (set at "Far" mode)?
The condenser mic is going to be more sensitive and you'll likely pick up more background noise, If I have to record at a distance of greater than 12" I would be looking at a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG4, but that is an XLR mic and you'll also need an audio interface like the Focusrite Solo
This mic is amazing.
Hi I just got a MV7 and it sounds muffled / quiet. It's connected in USB and I took your video's advices into account. Do you have any idea to get the mic sounds as clear as yours ?
Did you get the same foaming as him?
Same here
You have the motiv app installed? Have you tried using the presence boost setting? Limiter off and compression on med, low or off?
Great video. Just got the mic and I'm loving it so far. What does getting the RK345 actually DO to the sound?
It makes the mic sound so much better, you it makes it sound almost identical to the far more expensive SM7B
It helps with plosives like the “p” sounding like you are spitting on the mic
Does this work for when you are using a DAC to record singing vocals or is it exclusively directly through the mic?
Nice job
Thanks!
Hi! Great video, i just bought one, how or wich cable would I need to Connect to a MacBook Pro 2024? Thanks!
Just use the USB cable it comes with and you should be fine, assuming you got the USB version
Hello Andrew, great video, thank you, I am about buying this micro, may i know how many decibels are you getting with this microphone?
My audio comes in from the MV7 at about -9db which is perfect for what I want, I can actually make it even louder if I like
Would this mic be good for using while playing computer games with keyboard clicking i just ordered one and i have high hopes
The audio from both are close but the sm7b sounds a bit more rich, but i think tinkering with the settings could fix that
Great Video. thank you for this. Just got my got my MV 7 and upgraded it via the app but noticed that the green lights (on the microphone) are not running complete, there is now a gap 0-0-0-0-0 , it used to be 000000000 (hope that makes sense) , not sure if this was by design but the prior version didnt have this at all and now cant really change the mic volume properly using the touch control on the mic and anyone else experiencing this now as well.
Sounds like you've got it in auto mode, it does that when you've set it to auto in the app
Hi Andrew, thanks for the video. Are you using a webcam to record the video, and if so which one?
No I use a Sony Mirrorless camera ( ZVE 10 ) to record this, I normally record in 4k and down scale to 1080. Webcams don't offer anywhere near the kind of quality you require for decent-looking video.
Shure mv7 mikrofonumu zoom h8 cihazına xlr kablosu ile bağladım. Ama mikrofonun ışıkları yanmıyor nasıl aktif olabilir
Sir, Can I record poetry on Shure mv7x? I will get clear sound quality like condenser microphone
Yes you can, I would select clear mode in the app
did you use anything to add gain? i ask because the application alone isn't enough to add that much gain like you sound and if you did use something else what is it because you sound great and i have the same mic but i sound much lower even after all these settings you showed me. thanks in advance
I don't, but most of the time I record via Ecamm and I can increase the volume via that if I wish: bit.ly/3pTMBfT
how about a cloud mic, mic activator?
Is there audio interface built-in facility in the MV7 ?
Can MV7 be used for recording heavy rock / metal vocals. Please let me know it.
It could be used, but you could like do that with a cheaper mic like the SM58, the SM58 is used a lot in the music biz
Would have liked to hear what it sounded like on the "Far" setting. I'm shopping for a new mic and I want it away from my face above my monitor. How's it sound on the far setting?
It sounds OK, not quite as good when you are close to the mic, but still OK
There's some kind of weird whistle/artifacting at the end of phrases on the MV7. Not sure whether it's a matter of mic placement, some other processing, or what.
The video quality is amazing, which camera are you using sir?
In that video I actually used a Panasonic GH5s with a Metabones speedbooster and a Canon 35mm lens. But here's the thing, I have a cheap Sony ZVE10 with a cheap 23mm lens that looks even better and as a much better auto-focus. If I was buying a camera just to shot this type of video it would be the Sony ZVE 10 all day long. There should be a link in the video description that tells you what gear I recommend.
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thank you sir for sharing, let me follow the link
mine is still quiet in auto mode but not in manual any ideas?
Okay, thats cool but what interface do you use? something like rodecaster pro or goxlr? because only alone with this mic, you dont get such a good sound quali (i guess im not sure) haha would be nice if you tell me everything you use for ur mic
I use a focus 212 with a Fethead to add a little more boost
I have the mv7 And I just bought it for starting to do voice over on our RUclips channel after watching your video I'm sure that I've put too many DAWs attempting to get the up close in your ear sound that I want. My office is pretty padded except for the floor which is hardwood but I have a carpet and a couch and I have foam all around my desk and on the ceiling around it. And I can get it sounding fairly good but then I've noticed that there's large variance is sometimes in the way that I talk or sometimes it sounds muddy one day and not the other. I think I'll save those settings as a failsafe but then definitely go back and try these settings. Currently I just have it on auto mode and far and I'm sitting right up next to the microphone, I'm using DaVinci resolve and I have compressors limiter noise gate stuff like that and I've noticed that all that seems to take a toll on the sound. I was even thinking about getting an audio interface and running XLR but I don't know too much about this realm. I've also heard that the XLR doesn't really make that big of a difference anyway, My voice is pretty bassy So exactly like you said if I put it on dark it just sounds way too muffled It does not sound great at all but I'll be looking forward to my next day off where I can play with this a little bit more. The funny thing is when I put it directly into my Samsung s22 ultra that sounds exactly how I would want it to sound across all my platforms I just can't figure out what that EQ is
For a while I played with using a DBX286 with a DBX166 but like you I was spending way too much time messing about with audio issues, I just thought to hell with it and I record directly into my computer without any of that,
@@CourseBuildersAcademy appreciate it! I think I just need to start over, get the mic where I want it, not worry about noise gate or anything, use the mic compressor and limiter, then just eq on the PC. The mic is a great sounding mic, I'm just ADHD and I expect perfection all the time when I'm not even making a dime off any of this! Just a fun hobby
@@CourseBuildersAcademy what I don't understand is how some of these people have their mics (various types) like a foot or 2 away from their mouth and yet get no echo or reverb from the room and yet sound like they are right in your ear. When I try it, it would like you're trying to hear someone on speaker phone. Not that I want to do that, just something I have been curious
@@CTRadventures it’s the room, I have sound panels which make a huge difference and I use a dynamic mic which helps, but a cheap mic will sound good in a treated room, but a good mic won’t fix a bad room
@@CourseBuildersAcademy my room is pretty padded no echo, I have played w the idea of getting carpet in the room, but again it's a lot of cash or no return
The room isn't bad at all. I'm just a perfectionist 🤪 keep up the good work
Not sure not to apply this method to OBS, for streaming/recording. Anything on that?
Works with OBS just fine
Hi I’m back with a question my mv7 was working great with not picking up background noises etc but now it’s super sensitive how can I fix it ?
turn the gain down
Hello, sir! I have a question about this specific mic. Will the slider on the mic itself that you can adjust with your fingre work in xlr mode or is that only a feature that works when its on USB mode? Because I am thinking about buying this mic to use in XLR mode but also want the usb capabilities IF i need to use it (but probably won't use it much because its micro usb and thats not very durable). But I still want to make use of the slider thats on the mic itself. Thx!
You would use your audio interface to increase the volume on the mic in XLR mode
@@CourseBuildersAcademy I see. That helps a lot. Thx for responding!
Rode podmic usb Mv7 ?
Does the shure app work with with the MV7X also? I want to get that dark tone.
no, the app only works with USB
Hey Andrew! Quick question, can you connect this microphone with USB C to the macbook?
Yes you can
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Thank you!
Is the mic compatible with iPhone 13 pro max? Can i use the motiv app on it ?
It is possible to connect this mic to a iPhone and I did a video on how to connect it How To Connect A USB Mic Directly To A Camera - Quickly
ruclips.net/video/RTGq7T-N0u0/видео.html but the Motiv app won’t work on a iphone
So ive used the Shure MV7 for about a week now one morning i get up and the microphone is plugged in and all of that and it stops working like its on but whenever i speak into the microphone i get no feedback from it please help
I would contact Shure, sounds like a fault in the mic to me, or maybe the cable
Sir how you are recording and using mic at same time please tell me?
I use Ecamm
@@CourseBuildersAcademy for windows sir?
@@CourseBuildersAcademy sir i am using mv7 with scarlet 2i2 but with scarlet my laptop is not giving me options in input for mv7 but with scarlet my laptop gives the option
Mic gain adds a lot of noise.
You should use the mic as it is suppsosed to be: near to your mouth
Then you dont need that much mic gain That it adds noise
The problem is if you don't add gain then you don't sound loud enough....
@@randogeek @NelsonKC most mics have an audible noise floor, some are worse than others. The two things you can do are A) add acoustic treatment to your room, this will reduce some room tone and reverb which will reduce the perceived noise floor or B) use plugins to reduce noise. I am an audio engineer, and my preferred plugins for noise are Izotope Rx (Voice De-Noise for live audio like streaming, and Spectral De-Noise for post-production) or Waves Clarity (post production). Clarity is harder on your CPU, but I’d say it’s better as a set-it-forget-it solution. Using a Gate is also helpful, though it only closes when you aren’t speaking so noise may still be audible while you speak if you haven’t handled it properly.
There’s one more option, though it is hardware dependent. If you have a 2000-series Nvidia GPU or higher, you can use RTX Voice. It’ll use your GPU instead of your CPU for noise processing in live scenarios. It works well, and no other processing will take a hit.
I use the mv7 with an interface but I could never get loud enough. So I added a lifter. Definitely overkill but it works great without having to beat the crap out of the gain. 😅
I make settings in the software, does the settings carry over with the mic if you put it in another computer?
No it won't the settings are stored on the computer not in the mic
@@CourseBuildersAcademy thank you!
I am wondering why when I use MV7 with Motiv app and headphones I sound better then the actually recording comes out? Like my voice is so different with headphones but the recording doesn't sound as good it appears to be sounding
Audio always sounds better through headphones
Did you use any filters or just the Shure Motiv App?
Just the App no fancy filters
@@CourseBuildersAcademyI definitely hear noise gate.
@@selw0nk it's just a USB mic plugged into the back of my mac and recorded using Ecamm, no compressor, noise gates or anything, I don't have the time to mess about with all that stuff
Hi. I’ve followed all your instructions and my you tube videos sound tinny!
I have it plugged into my 10 year old Mac via a USB - any ideas ? I have mic extremely close to my mouth too.
It could your sound card, see if you test it on an other Mac, this happened to me once
I’m an idiot. I didn’t change the source to external microphone, so it was recording from the Mac mic! Doh!!
I know this video is older but what mic arm do you use?
Rode PSA1
I just bought my new MV7 today. I downloaded the app on my PC. The app will not open. It just sits there and says Loading. Any suggestions?
Did you find a solution to this by chance?
What is secerts? New future tech?
How can I make it sound like a regular mic. For example I’m performing on stage and the audience can hear me. It seems like the only way the sound will come out of the mic if I go back to listen to the recording or put in headphones. 🤦🏽♀️
To do this live you would need a set up with a dbx286 and maybe a dbx166, this gets a little complicated
How come there is no hiss in your audio with this mic? Did you edit the audio in post? Especially having the gain all the way up there should be some hiss.
my noise floor is around -48db, there is hiss but it's really low, set it up correctly with good quality cables, a good mic and make sure you have no electrical interference and this is what it should sound like
my mv7 has a mute button on it but it doesnt mute when i push it, it turns yellow but doesnt mute idk what im doing wrong
The button that turns it Yellow/orange is the headphone adjustment not the mute, the mute button is on the other side
@@CourseBuildersAcademy 😂😂 I’m dumb haha
If I use this mic w Bluetooth on while I’m laying a track to the rest of the music, will it have LAG TIME? Need to know. Please and thank you sir!
When I have my mic cloth to my mouth it always captures my breathing, how do you avoid that?
You could remove them in post, if you want to remove them while you are live you would need a XLR mic hooked up to a DBX286 with a noise gate, but this is getting a little complex
@@CourseBuildersAcademy Awesome thanks! How do I remove them in post production?
@@julia__sana you can use tools like audacity, or davinci or premier pro, depends on what will work best for you
For podcast reasons does it block outside noise ?
The MV7 being a dynamic mic does reduce external sounds, it's got a short pick up pattern so external sounds will be much lower
@@CourseBuildersAcademy gotcha because right now we have the blue yeti and we can talk in the same because each mic will pick up the other persons voice
@@CourseBuildersAcademy we just purchased the mv7 so hopefully that fixes that
@@GrubWithJesse The Yeti is far more sensitive and will pick up more. Like I said the MV7 may not totally fix it, but it should be a whole lot better at isolating the intended audio, make sure you're close to the mic ( really close ) and turn the gain down to make it less sensitive
@@CourseBuildersAcademy thanks for the response and info ! Do you recommend anything else ?
I send my mv7 back. The sound quality was good... but the headphone input was bad. The software was absolutely terrible, on both my macbook pro and new pc the software was continuously crashing.
Software did not work on MAC!
USB is the preferred method? Interesting.
Well it's less messing about and cheaper and still sounds good
there is a little sizzle noise in the background
yup. i hear it too. wtf is that? its there whenever he talks.
If you’re gonna spend 200$ on a mic, just go ahead and get the sm7b at that point
Facts
If you get a cloudlifter or preamp, which you will more than likely need for the SM7B, because it requires a lot of power to input useable audio into your recording software. That will cost you $150-400 more dollars on top of the price of the SM7B $399. An SMV7 with windscreen costs $260. I don’t believe the differences in sound between the two mics constitue a $150 difference and that isn’t including the preamp or cloudlifter that was stated previously. If you have $550-800 to spend, purchase a higher end microphone that comes with everything you need. If not, the SMV7 will work just fine 👌🏾
Total
SM7B $550-800
SMV7 $260
@@BrxxxxxBrxxx there’s better microphones that are usb/xlr that are way cheaper than the smv7, eg. fifine am8 which sounds on par with the sm7b
The mic in this video is much louder than my MV7 with the same settings. Mine is going into a 14” MacBook Pro via USB-C with no other devices connected. There must be some additional gain added to make this video. I do not have Ecamm.
Are you going live or recording Mark?
Hi @@CourseBuildersAcademy Thank you for the reply. The primary use is live for Zoom calls. However, I also use it for voiceover in Final Cut Pro and have tested it in Logic Pro. The next step for me is to use Logic Pro, enable software monitoring, change the settings for low-latency, boost the gain and add EQ, set the output to VB-Cable, and use VB-Cable as the input in Zoom. Some videos make it seem like the mic should sound like the mic does in your video when recording or live without any additional settings beyond the ShurePlus MOTIV app.
@@MarkSowell When I use a mic like the MV7 I'm normally close to the mic, I know some people who do have it out of the shot and the audio is OK, not as good as being close since this is how the mic is intended to be used. If you really want the mic to be out of the shot without worrying about the levels or having to mess about with processing while you're live you need to be looking at a XLR Shotgun Mic, I use the Rode NTG2 which for the money is really good, almost on par with the famous MKH 416 but cheaper
Im trying to debate if the MV7 is a scam to get you to spend more. Sure, I know alreayd Im dumb but having the USB would mean at least it should pick up something...
Now it wants me to give them my info, setup accounts, and all this other nonsense. Im not sure I even want to stream or do this stuff, so why would I spend more and more to just see how it sounds? Better off getting a cheap amazon mic and start from there.
