Today I review the new Shure MV7+ an XLR & USB dynamic microphone with a lot of DSP processing available over USB. The sound of the XLR is great with a supportive lowend, somewhat mid focussed but pleasing sound, and a non-aggressive upper frequency range. Over USB the sound is a bit different with a somewhat hollow sound with congested mids and a tame top end. The DSP processing is all very nicely implemented and it stores all the settings on device so you can use this on a computer without Shure's softrware as well.

Feedback from Shure: “Nothing was changed from MV7 to MV7+ XLR circuitry”.
Shure is researching delta between XLR and USB performance. I will make update video and provide info in this pinned comment as new information is available.
Please do Ahuja MTP 20
They released a new firmware update
Has it fixed the issue? @@Edoardo-jh9yg
I really want to buy this mic but your comments about this specific issue and giving me pause... Fingers crossed there is an update which sorts this out!
MINDBLOWING review .. !!
Overnighting another microphone is dedication! Excellent work, Bandrew!
I've the original MV7 and Im sticking with it. Thank you for the great review.
Thank you very much! I was looking at the MV7+ and have been awaiting your review. I'm glad I didn't just plunk down the cash for a lesser quality USB microphone. Wow you got a second mic to confirm the behavior, impressed with your commitment to getting the review right! Thank you!
This is a pretty lesser quality USB microphone. I'm not much of a fan of it. I'd personally check out the Rode NT1 5th Gen instead. Plus you get 32 bit floating point support.
Plosive test suggestion: Please *prepare* pizza pronto please
this is game changing
Please prepary *pineapple* pizza pronto please xD
Nahh, the OG is nostalgic!
Perfect timing. I was just talking about this mic as I have one, as does my podcast partner, and people ask about upgrades from Yeti that are USB or affordable. A much needed review, sir!
The podmic usb is also a good option
I love your mic reviews, but I may just start watching so I can listen to your playing. That sounded great 👍
Have the original MV7, and still love it. Ty for the review of the MV7+!
Was waiting for this one. Thanks!!
Wow your review is by far the best one I've seen. I love the microphone comparisons toward the end it's super helpful.
omg the resonance coming from all of the taps 😵 -- Also, amazing music demo!!
Awesome thorough overview 👊
I hear it. I also listened to several people's reviews after this one, as well as a podcast where a host uses this mic. There is a static noise present in every one of them. Almost sounds like a ground isolation issue. Very interesting piece of tech. The denoiser does a really great job, and I love how it stores settings inside of the microphone itself.
Love your reviews, probably one of the best reviewers I've seen, if not the best. You keep things concise, simple, and digestable without yammering on about useless information to pad time.
I've watched your vids for the MV7, the SM7b, and SM58 as I'm looking for a mic to reduce the background noise as much as possible. Currently in a situation where I am in an open room next to the living room with a tv going all day, and have found some difficulty elimating that noise. Suggestions? Sound treatment, doors, and other room changes just aren't feasable.
Excellent review, as always. If I were to buy now, I might opt for this new one. But as the owner of the first MV7, I think there is no reason to exchange.
For me, one of the most interesting points in the comparisons between the podcast models presented was: we know that choosing a microphone today takes into account several factors, including the status that a brand can bring in the case of use in videos/podcasts. But when listening to the tests here on the Sennheiser HD 560s headphones (which are an excellent headphone for analysis as they show the slightest variations in audio very well) it must be said that the Fifine K688 is unbelievable for the price.
Bro just makes the best mic reviews on RUclips
Thanks so much man, I really appreciate that a lot. There are tons of great mic reviewers on youtube, but the kind words mean a lot. Thank you.
I asked, and you delivered! Thanks Podcastage! Great video as always.
And thanks too!!
- Lydia
Thank you so much Lydia!
Your level of professionalism in ensuring your reviews are accurate and going above and beyond to even buy a second microphone to do so is worthy of our respect and admiration. Thank you Bandrew.
Bandrew, great work on the review.
Been watching a lot of your videos lately. You are the man, man. Thanks a ton for what you're doing. Do you know if you'd be able to review the WA-CX12 sometime?
Patiently waiting for an sE electronics T1/T2 review 😳👀
Thank you for the review. I did buy it and I hope it works out for what I need it for but mainly because I can do the USB for the road or the XLR when I'm at home in the studio. I don't have a mixer/interface yet so I'm going to have to wait to use the XLR. I'm looking for more of a radio sound for a certain application so I'm sure I'll need to get the interface before the end of June.
Doobalee DID!!! Love how i have notifications on and yet dont get notified when one of these drops... yay YT!
Got some resonance around the 700 area there huh?
The music test is always the star of the show. Still cant wait for that album to drop.
Balto would be proud!
I don’t even care about the mic. I’m here for the personality and showmanship.
You’ve lost weight since I last tuned in. Looking good! I need to do that too. Nicely done
Fantastic review and great channel, may I ask you a suggest? As far as I understand from your review (I’m italian so english isnt my main tongue) you are saying that contrary with the original Mv7, this new Mv7+ sounds better on xlr and worse on usb, so my question is; on usb do they sound different? Because i was planning to buy the Mv7 but since this new came out for basically the same price, I was thinking to buy the plus instead, but I want to be sure that it dsnt sound worse, would be dumb for me to buy a worse version for my usage. Thanks and again, very great channel!!!
i was waiting for that video lol
hey Bandrew I have been following you for a long time, you are definitely the best at reviewing microphones. there is a certain microphone that interests me a lot, unfortunately there are not many reviews about it, could you ask Golden Age if they can send you the Ga 8000 for a video?
It would be very interesting and I would finally have a nice review to look at
Super informative review! I agree that the XLR sounds better than USB output.
Ah! This is so helpful. I have the Shure SM58 and primarily use the MV7 for podcasting BUT I have a tough time with plosives. Any suggestions? Thank you for the video. I'm a total equipment nerd but get stuck in getting the settings right.
When are you gonna review the shure Nexadyne? I would love to see that 😊
It’s crazy, I remember buying multiple of the Q2U for like $30 a piece back in the day. I think in 2018. Crazy that it goes for $70 now and is still a relatively good deal.
Thank you so much.
Excellent video as usual.
You go through the features and then you give your thoughts, and you never seem to go just on the features. I really appreciate that. These devices are more than the mash up of the features and how they are used seems to be very important too.
I definitely feel that is important not me in what I am doing.
This was exactly the video I needed to see.
I am new to podcasting and needed a mic. Mu Blue yeti broke to I decided to get something with a USBC connector. (Futureproofing haha)
I was sad that the MV7 only had micro-USB but it was so expensive that the cost was basically making the decision.
There are so many good options.
I decided that I wanted 24bit audio so that there is some headroom when editing so I was eyeing the Samson Q9U.
Then out came the MV7+ with USBC.
I was thinking if I needed to get it for the extra DSP capabilities.
I have a voice that needs a mic that can provide some low end & it needs a mic that will provide that resonance.
I tried the Sennheiser Profile, and I loved it but it does not have XLR (which I don't really need) but it makes my voice sound a little higher than I like.
The Sanson Q9U has that low end that I think supports my voice.
The sound of the original MV9 seemed to be what I wanted.
Now I ahve heard your recordings I am sure I sould stick with what I have.
I don't think I need the DSP tools enough to spend double the money to get the output that is not as god as the XLR.
Do you think I made the right decision?
I still ahve the ability to return the Samson Q9U and have only tried a few mics.
I just need something with USB-C and had that podcast sound like the SM7b. Deep and resonant with a lot of presence.
Is there something better than the Samson Q9U out there that I don't know about?
Any inputs would be very much appreciated.
Rode Podmic USB
If you’re happy with the way you sound on the Samson, then I’d say that you should save your money and keep it.
Fantastic review. The star of this was the Earthworks mic which sounded great. Then the Fifine sounded good for the koney. The big comparison is to the Rode Podemic USB which sounded okay but i could hear alot of emphasis on the esses.
Perfect mate. Just what I needed. I was thinking about the sm7b, but if this sounds just as good, then why not save a chunk of hard earnt. I have a xlr podmic and want to upgrade to a better xlr. Is this better (using xlr)? I’m using it for voiceover/podcasts. Thanks man.
The SM58!
But why the SM7B in the first place? :O
More cool mellow music! Really great! When is that "Bandrew Chills" album coming?
I do like the plosive popper feature and the reverb. I have the mv7 and it is nice to have the usb option but it sounds good on the volt 76 interface. Noise rejection is very good and I don''t have to do any post processing on the audio to get pretty good sound.
Great review. Does the auto gain feature also persist even when connected to another computer without the special Shure software?
Great review, once again! Long live the Rode NT USB+, probably only beaten by the Lewitt Aura.
Excellent. Thank you.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hi!
did you made a review of the Ehrlund EHR-M?
Thank you for your work!
That’s got really good off axis rejection. Nice.
Superb!
Great Review, i have some question, you have test two mics, can i conect this mics in a USB Hub?, cam i record with 4 at a time?, can you make that test?, can i use the mv7+ whitout USB connection only XLR?
I just wanted to tell you how incredibly valuable your videos are. You've already saved me a lot of money with what I consider to be the best and most honest tests. But you also cost me a lot of money because of the "want-to-have" effect. 😆 But not the MV7.
Greetings from Germany
Hello Bandrew! Hope you're doing well. I'd like to ask you something regarding the upgrade of audio gears.
I've been using the Maono-USB Microphone for around 5 years and have been looking forward to upgrade to the "Rode NT1 Signature Series" for my home studio solo vocal recordings. But I'm confused about the type of interface I should gear into. I'm on the hunt for a budget-friendly audio interface that offers low background noise while complementing the capabilities of the NT1.
Which one would you recommend buying- Universal Audio Volt 1, Behringer Um2, Rode Ai1, Focusrite Scarlett 4th gen, or Steinberg UR12?
I'm going to be using it with my PC, so which one among these would you recommend buying?
THANK YOU
Thank you so much for this video. Between the MV7+ and the rode NTG video mic, which one would you choose?
I was wondering about this mic.
hi podcastage i was just wondering what micraphone i should get as i want to have a good but mainly clear and similar to real life sound and not anything to expensive i was wondering what mic you would suggest
Danke!
Thank you so much for the support Rainer. It really means the world and helps make videos like this possible. You’re a legend.
This is what I wanted the original to be glad they improved it
Hay, my guy going to get the beyerdynamic m160 ribbon mic. What pc friendly interface would you recommend? Thanks for the help.
This is a bummer. As a professional podcaster with MV7s in the arsenal, I've had to have them replaced multiple times by Shure due to the mini-USB port breaking. My hosts travel with the mics often, which creates more wear and tear. Because of that, I was excited to hear Shure had replaced that with a USB-C port, which I assumed would be sturdier. Apparently, it's still pretty flimsy, and the review makes it sound like we'd be giving up some audio quality in the process. Dammit! But a million thanks for the amazing work you do on these reviews!
11:29 as a die hard hater and a certified schizo of programs running in the background, thank you for including this simple but effective test. This feature along with the inclusion of USB-C means that this will be my next microphone once I find a good deal for it.
Nice, You should've added the zoom zdm1 as well .
Now that is how one should review a microphone.
I am glad that you didn't lose 30+ hours of reviewing to a broken mic =)
a shame the mic isn't designed well though...
Why?
I'd grab a cheap windscreen, SM58 type and cut it very close to where the rounded end becomes uniform. Stuff that up the windscreen to leave just a little airbreak. Dual filter. That should help.
Great review. Can you please try a different USB-C cable such as Apple or an audiophile quality brand? A USB cable is highly subjective to electro magnetic field around it.
Nailed it. Most XLR/USB mics seem to sound worse in USB mode and this belongs with those
I think even the OG samson Q2u has a bit of a diff tone on XLR vs USB
The funny one is the PD200x which sounds better in usb. At least to me.
I'm curious, as a MV7 owner/user, is that Motiv mix app available for MV7 users or is that specific to the MV7+?
I can't find any walk through videos regarding it. Only thing showing up is the older Motiv app that bugs out for me every so often.
Yes mv7 works on the motive mix app. You don’t get additional dSP but it shows up in there and you can adjust settings and record.
xD maybe I should have watched a bit more before jumping in to be like, "bruh I want that Motiv mix app."
Oh well 😅
@@BandrewScott Just got home and you are right. The Motiv Mixer app literally does nothing for the MV7 except being able to record from it. The only option is the gain.
Useless program for me so it goes bye bye off my computer.
Shure nexadyne review next?
USB featured mic for $280 doesn't make much, if any, sense to me.
Absolutely perfect review.
Is the usb port sounds better now ? Or should I buy the MV7 OG ?
Thank you for this excellent review! Based on the xlr /usb sound difference The original MV7 looks a lot better
Rode PodMic usb or Shure mv7+? I want to do recordings, also might stream
Oww those controls are so cool, I have them all physically on my sennheiser profile mic 😂
Can you make a test or comparison video with us Windows users in mind, i.e. show where and how much you adjust those "gain, post poost, etc." settings? In your videos, it's hard to distinguish 100 or 400 euro microphones from each other. They sound so similar. When I look at the Levels tab in my Windows, there are two items volume and power increase. I've had to "shout" at the USB microphones I've tried, and if you raise the controls to their pins again, the microphone makes a lot of noise when you don't talk to it.
Please help me make a choice, MV7+ or LCT 440 pure?
These are completely different microphones 😅
But let me first ask you a few questions: Are you aware of the differences between a dynamic and a condenser microphone? For what would you use them, and how is your environment?
@@justyuriforever Exactly. I have owned a RODE Podcaster mic for 6+ years. Eventually, I decided to try something new. I need a mic for podcasting. Both of these microphones have their pros and cons for me.
Which mic has a lower noise floor in usb, the Podmic or mv7+?
Please tell me where should peak for gaming channel voice over while I play. I have sm7b and wavexlr
Get an inline preamp to get more gain. Get a volt 176 preamp with compressor. Put up the gain nice and high to drive the preamp's compressor. Done.
can you use usb and xlr at the same time?
Sorry to hear and see the USB-C is wobbly. That's my biggest complaint with my MV7: the micro usb is really loose and wobbly.
What about the deity vo 7u instead of this ?
when you make a vocal recording review mainly dialog please try to demonstrate other type if voices other then yours
Shure is one of my favorite microphone company always reliable in my experience
They're good but overhyped, relying on designs from half a century ago without much innovation. I have the SM7B. It sounds great but is unusable, in my opinion, due to the massively high required gain. It brings the noise floor well into the audible range. Their "solution," instead of engineering a new microphone, was to release the SM7dB which is basically just a Cloudlifter. It doesn't actually change the noise floor at all.
@@lizardpeter lewitt has the 240 pro which imo sounds better than the sm5b but the reliability of the sm7db is the reason i use it, i can eq it by heart and make it sound better with most voices
@@volvvix I'm going to try out the NT1 5th Gen. I've seen a lot of great things. High sensitivity and one of the lowest self noise figures on the market. I love the SM7B sound but for my application the high noise floor makes it unusable after adding all the required gain.
@lizardpeter yea everyone has their own needs for equipment don't even feel pressure to buy a product, do the research and find the right fit I happen to use the sm7db because I'm familiar with its sound and I think it's one of the most reliable microphones I own but the 240 from lewitt is also a microphone I rely on
@@volvvix Yeah, I just took a look at that one from Lewitt and unfortunately I don’t think it will work for me as it has lower sensitivity and much higher self noise than the NT1, so it would probably perform similarly in terms of noise to the SM7B I already have, but thanks for the recommendation!
I'd put the sound about on par with a K688. What a weird price point they chose.
The K688 is pretty good for the price. "Only" 16 bit 48kHz and the zero latency monitoring is a bit quiet. It also needs a pop filter intended for an SM7B, otherways there's barely any space between the pop filter and the capsule.
I do definitely see the use for this microphone, but the usb output sounds waaaay off. Also, it's not very versatile. And why is it so resonant? I'd just go with the original one
I used xlr for home usb mic for on the go on my tablet. Cheap usb mic should do if u spend more money better to buy xlr mics.
I upgraded from an OG Shure MV7 to a WA-U47jr and I'm NEVER going back
Excellent. I’ll spend my money elsewhere.
Great to see you Patrick! Thanks for coming by.
@@Podcastage Absolutely. I love your videos. Someday I want to have a VIP set up… I’ve got to learn this information somewhere.
Yes
USB: MV7+ definitely sounds nasal compared to the MV7 which has the warmth and smoothness of SM7B. Sad. Might a firmware update fix this?
I notice you said that Shure claims the XLR circuitry did not change, but no comment on the USB circuitry.
One day, he'll bring out a hammer for the resonant mic body test, and destroy the microphone.
I live in wait for this.
I wish they would just make a usb only version
Peaking at -9 is hot?
0:56 for some reason, i feel like there should have been a mosaic blur here...
How on earth did you resist the urge and managed to NOT add a squeaky sound effect at 0:28 ?!
That mic just sounds unpleasant to me no matter the connection method. Like a cheap SM7b ripoff. Weird.
I hope Bandrew can return the amazon replacement
Mv7 plus is the king
It seems a bit sad that it's a combo mic with dsp, and yet it's the usb output that appears to be the most challenged. I mean the selling points over a thousand XLR mics, is having usb, having dsp, working on phones etc. Even if they've only tuned the usb/dsp logic for voice/podcasts it seems odd it's shaped the way you describe. (only crappy RUclips+device sound at my end, so deaf to nuance). I mean we could understand issues on a Chinese mic at half the price or less, but this is a Shure and £280 in the UK. Ouch.
I just went back and found your review of the MV7X. You concluded that it also had a different sound profile to the MV7 in XLR. I think few would have expected that either since it was the same capsule and they'd only "pulled out" the usb stuff. In that case we could understand the X having a better noise floor, or a cleaner signal since it's not fighting the usb hardware, but it was odd the sound had a different shape. I'm included to wonder if something similar happened here, somehow the capsule is reacting differently - but the usb hasn't been retuned to it. Still seems weird, especially with Shure badge and £280.
I commented on the other guy's doubtful review, I wonder if some accountant (or the factory) cheapened or on some details very late in the development cycle. Thus the resonance being worse than both predecessors (which weren't great at it anyway), and the odd sound profile. These things would/are annoying an a Chinese combo mic at $100-150, but more understandable there than in a pro priced Shure.
Please prepare to partake pizza pronto patrons

@@FallenKiid yes 🇮🇳❤️
MV7+ and MV7 sound identical. I can't tell.
it's definitely broadcast-y...
USB C cable so wobbly, wth?
What?
I can’t even get my stream pc recordings to sound clear, all robotic 🤖 sounding…
yes, there are huge differences, and there is a huge difference between DSPs and analog processing ... so much FAIL, if you want real processing, don't use the onboard DSP's
Summary..Basically.. get a sm7b.
