Best full review of the MV7. I bought the MV7 and all i can say it's WOW!!! Amazing! 😊 I don't have buyers remorse because of the SM7B. They both basically sound the same. You can't go wrong with Shure brand. ❤
Perfect analysis. Just some notes: SM7B is very similar to EV RE20. Both have wide cardioid directivity, and minimal proximity effect, even sound/tone is similar. MV7 is using std dynamic cardioid capsule, as SM57 & SM58 have. Directivity and proximity are like with std cardioid mic/capsule. Concerning SM58 & SM57 - the only difference is the head ball's mesh/inner foam anti-pop filter construction. SM58 is a little bit better protected from pop-effects. SM57 is a little bit more opened and detailed sounding. Removing the inner foam filter from SM58 mesh ball makes it even more detailed as SM57, such SM58 is safer (against the drum sticks) and even better sounding as SM57 on drums. But additional outer foam filter reduces pops even more, but not only... Quality of the OPEN-cell foam is very important! Any additional pop filter is more or less but degrading sound quality, reducing low & high frequencies and original sound's details. Distanced studio mesh pop-filters work better, more distance from capsule - more protection. SM57 has an optional original A2WS foam anti-pop filter (ok for 545D too). Of course, SM58 is almost the same 565D and SM57 is almost the same 545D, with minimal difference in presence peak's frequency (a little bit higher for 565 & 545), no difference in sound quality. All these 4 mics use the same construction design, very similar capsules and the same output transformers. Outer dimensions are identical, even the mesh balls are swappable. All they have On/Off switch versions (added S index). P.S. BETA 58 and BETA 57 are rather different designed and sounding microphones.
I thought there was something wrong with my Shure SM7 mic because the lights were not flashing. I've been looking all over the internet to see if other people had this problem. After listening to your very thorough video I am happy to find out that the lights do not flash when using XLR cable (and this is how I was using the mic). Thanks again Tom. Loving your podcast course btw :)
Enjoyed your review, Thanks I bought a MV7 today, I can't wait to give it a workout. You can buy a micro usb C to usb micro converter to fiture proof the MV7's usb output.
I have been using a blue yeti X for almost 2 years now. But i just bought a MV7 waiting for it to be delivered and this video solidified that i have made the right purchase.
Shure has since released the RK345 Black Replacement Windscreen that is a significant improvement. FYI, the SM57s and 58s that I used when I played in a band back in the 90s still work, perfectly. Because I do corporate podcasting, the software and touch features are great, as I'm often putting them in front of amateurs.
I grabbed one 2 or so years after release because of its flexibility. I can use it with XLR into my audio recorders, or use USB direct into the PC or even my smartphone. And it sounds good enough when I need a dynamic, radio-y sounding mic. Thanks for reviewing it when it was new :)
17:29 That actually makes sense that it works like a dial rather than a swipe bar because when you're adjusting this you aren't going to be looking at it. When you were showing that that was one of my issues with it. It's fine when you can see it but it's a set and forget usage. But know that I know it works like a dial. That's actually a lot MORE useful because you'll be able to adjust by sound rather than worry about going too far by sight. It's not as good as haptic feedback but it's a great choice in UX
Yo -- it is worth the price! Thank you for the thorough review. I just purchased the Shure MV7 and I really enjoy it. I noticed that the XLR cable was causing some feedback -- so I picked up a new one and it works perfectly! WOOT WOOT.
Great review. Just wanted to add though that another scenario / use case for this mic is someone who's starting out like me. I've recently started recording videos and pod casts, the USB/XLR feature was a nice positive that drew me to it given that I'm new to the whole thing and have no idea about whether I want to make the heavier investment into XLR usb interface. I ended up buying this on Amazon prime sale (saved quite a bit) and figured I can use the USB feature fist and upgrade to an XLR interface later if this pod casting hobby turns out to be a long term thing.
Just FYI another well reputable reviewer said MV7 sounds better in the USB mode than in the XLR mode. If that were true, your hypothetical scenario would not work out :c
Love the video. Could you try the MV7 vs the SM7B via Rodecaster with the different rodecaster effects added to each? Such as the big bottom. I have the SM7B with the rodecaster but would love to see if it will sound almost similar incase I want to add guest for my podcast in the future. You could also throw the podmic in there too lol Sidenote: I would love for them to update the SM7B. Maybe add in a built in fethead and mute button. The app would be useful too but you make a good point about apps being abandoned. MV7 seems more geared to beginners that are still on the fence with XLR but want that Joe Rogan sound. Kudos to Shure for developing this but it definitely would be more price friendly at say 150-199 dollars. Especially since Yetti's and Podmics are even cheaper. I would have tried a MV7 if I didn't buy a mixer already.
That'd be an interesting test- I may need to borrow the SM7B again to try it out. I feel like it won't take much to make them match pretty well. An SM7B with a build in gain amp would be pretty unstoppable!
Thank you so very much! I am new in live streaming, but you made me felt in love with this mic that I have to order one from eBay. Once again thanks a lot!
Based this and other reviews I just bought the MV7 along with the RK345, which is the windscreen that comes on the SM7B. It cuts down the Plosives Perfectly. Shure, it was another $13, but I don't think listeners will be able to tell the difference between my MV7 and an SM7B unless they're spokenwordophiles with fabulous headphones. Thanks to idiot-proof software, I have the convenience of USB with the sound of something high-end. For my first mic purchase ever, it is perfect.
Enjoyed your video! I bought the MV7 specifically for the reason you described. I have the USB connected to my work laptop and use it for video conferencing and I have the XLR connected to a Focusrite 2i2 interface connected to my personal Windows desktop and use it for streaming. I don't do any multi-person podcasts but I want the convenience of having one mic so I don't have to use the crappy laptop mic for work or having to switch mics between work and streaming. I agree about the premise of the mic in the very beginning of your review. I have musician friends that have used both the SM58 and SM7B and all the research and specs I've seen indicate it really is an SM58 dressed up to look like an SM7B with USB added to appeal to streamers and podcasters who want a good XLR mic but don't have the money to send on the other equipment necessary for XLR but want a path to that in the future. A $200 price point would have been a much better segment for this mic. I just bought a vacation home and will have a dedicated XLR streaming setup there. I plan to test several XLR mics to see what works for my voice! I'll be keeping my eye on your channel for suggestions. Keep up the good work!
Hi Tom, I am using my recently purchased MV7 with the Rodecaster Pro and I love it for my podcast as well as reading audiobooks. i also have the PodMic and I like it a lot, but for me the MV7 is just that little bit richer for my voice. Thanks for your review, it really helped me make the decision to get it..
Thanks Tom, was helpful, I have been spent 2 decades as radio host, we had used EV RE20 | 27 and these SM7B series. Now, as I feel just for podcasting Rode pod mics would be more than enough!
I really enjoy SHure. I used to have them when I was in a band back in the 70's. I basically purchased it for Zoom meetings and creating me a home office setup. As always thank you for another awesome. yes replay.
Just wanted to say "thank you" for this video! It helped me to finally decide, that this mic is the one I am going for. Yet you managed to show some "alternative" mics and what they are good for. I can totally relate to you words. Before you mentioned it, I had the feeling, that the MV7 is just a "advanced" or maybe "professional" mic, that brings joy to its owner. The SM-Models are more like raw professional "tools", eventough the SM-7B sounds so great - but maybe because of this "perfection", you can have more fun with its little brother when streaming or recording v.o. or podcasts. You just did such a detailed review, with such an amazing quality I am blown away! I hope, that your channel will be appreciated even more in 2021. Wish you the best of luck and a successful year! Greetings from germany :)
Thank you! I really appreciate that and I'm sure you'll love the Shure. I did put the SM7B pop filter on mine, and it fixed the plosive problem. I've really been liking it!
@@tombuck Oh, thats great news. Does this also apply to the "S"-sounds? And another Question: Does the RK345 Windscreen fit the MV7 and is it worth its price (15-20 $/€)? Greetings :)
Oh, great review, btw. I've seen Alpha Gaming and Podcastage review this mic. Each of you had great individual points of view with unique perspectives. Thanks for another quality video.
Thanks for the comprehensive review. I think you’re missing that an xlr mic night cost less but you’re now investing into converters if you’re a streamer which boosts the price a ton.
@@tombuck right. Thanks. I carefully weighed things and need to purchase today. My blue yeti usb died and I can’t do any videos until I replace it. I’m unable to get an mv7 in real life so will go with the yeti x as I think the software that runs it will do well to minimize ambient noise in my home studio.
Thank You ro review, Tom! What a man !) I didn't expect that you will buy A81WS windscreen for SM57 that i wrote in comments - hope it worth 35$ - now You should make 2nd part of epic buttle SM7b vs SM57 :) Btw another tip You should try MV7 - with RK345 - those windscreen that comes preinstalled on SM7b, they say it reduces plosives totaly from MV7 but it's a bit tight to fit. Have a bit odd question/request I just got in very stupid marketting trap - I just ordered A81WS and bought Rode PSA1 boom arm and was ready to buy SM57 and Audient EVO4 audio interface for voice recording (not an instrumets or singing) - and than what happend - RUclips just got exploided with this MV7 - everyone say how good it is - now i don't know what to do, - both setups cost roughly same money, both dynamic and mimic SM7b, each one have it's own pros and cons. - usually i try to research when i buy laptop, monitor or building PC - Ytube videos and customer reviews usually helps - but mics is something from another planet expecially to understand benefits of each setup - feel myself confused... Suggest me please, - which one is better - your thoughts. Just few words in comments - which one you would go with, and why, or make a new video - whatever works for You. Thank You very much, Tom! Sorry for my English.
Yes, thank you for the recommendation! The MV7 is a great mic, but honestly, I would personally prefer the SM57/windscreen with an audio interface if you're just starting out. Mainly because it'll offer you more flexibility as you grow. The MV7 is a great "one stop shop" but if you buy one and then later on decide you want to add another XLR mic or something, you'll still need to buy an interface and go down that whole. rabbit hole.
@@tombuck Thank You so much Tom! I guess i would agree - sm57 tested over years - and i can always add a bit EQ in software if needed + each part can be upgraded/replaced separatly, with MV7 on the other hand - i have to buy both mic and Interface to upgrade... another bebefit of EVO4 that it should give nice sound quality for headphones (anyway it should be better than from built in motherboard soundchip). Thank You for your help! BTW what do you think about sound of SM57 with windscreen? You said few words - it sounds good for me - some customers say that it's very-very close to SM7b :)
Thanks for the review. Awesome as always! I bought this mic before your review because I already decided in my mind that I for shure had to get it! 😁. As for who it’s for, our family started with the sm48 when lockdown hit in order to continue music school. Then when live performances came back, we upgraded to the sm58. I had wanted the sm7b for a while but couldn’t justify the $400 for something we’re doing as a hobby for RUclips videos. The mv7 dropped at $250 and looked like a mini sm7b and had a price that agreed with my wallet so I snatched it up! I love the sound we get from it for podcasting and actually love the logo. It feels nice and sturdy and looks good on camera. And honestly, I like it better than the podmic. Plus with that giant windscreen for the pidmic, I feel it blocks too much of your face whereas the mv7 you see much more especially with the yoke that also lets you see under/ thru the mic. Great job as always!
Loved the comparison. I gotta say, the Podmic still kills it for the price. Best bang for buck mic I've ever used 👍. And what is up with that micro USB cable 🤷♂️
@@tombuck Absolutely it is. It arrived yesterday and I love it. I also ordered Shure RK 345 as some other reviewers suggested, it will make it even better.
The main reason I've not bought a Shure MV7 yet is the micro USB. That is just sooo dumb, I can't make myself buy one. I've got a Shure SM7B, and a Shure Super 55 Deluxe - both fantastic dynamic mics. I think I may get an Elgato Wave XLR and let it turn this proven dynamic mics into USB mics with modern perks. By the way, one of the most important features most of us want in a microphone is background noise rejection. It would be amazing if mic reviewers would give us more to let us know how the mics do at rejecting background noise - like play a fan, or create some noise typical to many homes so we can choose a mic that better fits our use case. Also, I saw a RUclips video where someone replaced the SM7's windscreen with the windscreen for an SM7b, and it worked well in his video. You might try that.
The SM7B windscreen does work really well on the MV7! Thanks for the ideas about background noise tests- I'll try and find ways to do that in future videos.
The fact that you don't need a cloudlifter for this is a winner for me. However I do believe the sm57 has a closer audioprofile to the sm7b. The MV7 is for the visuals of a audiovisual project, but the sm57 wins for me
I’m an artist and would love to use this microphone for my vocals on socials and in my music. This video was exceptionally helpful. And the detail as well, articulated for anyone ear and interest. I’ve just subscribed to your channel. Great review ! ! !
Ive had it for a few months and best choice for me. Upgraded from a Yeti X and night and day difference. Just ordered my first audio interface and cloud lifter so making that jump into the xlr world!
Hey Tom! Great video, do you think you'll consider revisiting the new MV7+ Microphone? It looks like it has a new longer windscreen, some additional technology built in and new feature within the App too. Looks like it just released this month on April 9th 2024. I am returning my MV7 to Amazon to exchange for the new MV7+ since this new one came out within my 30-day return window. Would be interested to hear your take on the new one or comparisons. Thanks!
I'm glad to hear that! It's an awesome mic overall and I found that a Shure SM7B windscreen fixes the plosive issue (if it turns out to be something you notice).
Really good video review on the MV7, I am a really small time streamer. I actually bought one like right now, my reasoning behind it though is I like the dual functionality of USB/XLR setup. I currently have no way to even use an XLR mic but I like having the upgrade path of the XLR mic so in a few months or years when I want to change up my setup a bit then I can invest in something like a GoXLR or another audio interface.
I think this is a smart move. The USB/XLR combo is really useful. And if you notice plosives becoming a problem, the windscreen from the SM7B works really well. You can even go to reporterstore.com and get colorful ones if you want. (I'm not affiliated with them, I've just bought a lot of windscreens from them😬)
Hello Tom! Hello my good friend. My name is Alex. For six months now, I've been choosing a camping option for recording commercials, radio jingles, audiobooks, and voice-overs at home. And it is difficult to choose a high-quality usb microphone. And a month ago I saw this model Shure MV7. I hesitated between this model and the Lewitt DGT450 condenser microphone. And your video became the last resort and I was inclined to buy a Shure MV7. I like the sound of it. I think it will sound the same for me. Thanks a lot.
It’s a great mic, and the fact that it’s dynamic makes it easier to block out unwanted sounds. I did buy the pop filter intended for the SM7B to reduce plosives and it’s been excellent ever since. 👍
Great review sir. I went with this microphone because I do a call in video type show through the week and on the weekends I have 3 of my buddies come by for a more traditional podcast setting. I love my rodecaster but I have a small desk so just being able to Chuck a microphone on the desk in usb mode is perfect. Keep the rodecaster put away until my buddies come over. Like you said it will be a good 50/50 workhorse for me. Plus the price is only $150 at guitar center now. Can’t beat that.
@@tombuck Tom I have to clarify something because you responded. I accidentally ordered the MV7x which is an xlr only microphone. Oops…that’s why it’s only $150. That said it sounds good enough that I’m gonna just keep it lol. But the mic I received does NOT have usb capability.
Thank you so much for this review. I’ve been curious about the MV7 since it was released and this video is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I think the SM7b is still the right choice for me, but it’s super helpful to understand the differences.
But that opening !!! :) As soon as I saw this product released I thought, "I'll wait for Tom's review before I make a quick purchase". Than you for the very in-depth review ... so helpful!
Do you hear the audio effects applied on the app when listening on headphones? Lets say you apply some compression, do you hear the compression on the headphones?
Thanks for the video review, Tom. I already have a Shure SM7B which I use for both video and podcasting running through the Rodecaster. My main PC is on a different desk than my video/podcasting rig and I wanted something I could use via USB rather than buying an interface and I can use it on the Rodecaster when I have a guest in the studio and it's reasonably close to the SM7B. It's a drag that the MV7's pop filter isn't as good as the SM7B but I can live with that for Zoom calls, etc. and can even things out using the processing in the Rodecaster for a podcast guest.
It's a great mic overall! I've noticed that newer MV7's do come with slightly improved windscreens, and you can replace the existing one with the SM7B's windscreen to totally remove the issue. You can also get colored SM7B windscreens from reporterstore.com, which I've done and it's super fun. AND, if you're really into visuals, you can order a totally custom colored MV7 from Colorware.com. It's $50 more, but it's super cool. My wife got one and I'm jealous 😁
@@tombuck that's great to hear Tom. I actually use the thicker windscreen on my SM7B. You don't see them on RUclips very often but Shure gives you both. So I can use the standard one on my MV7. I actually saw the colored windscreens in one of your other videos and was curious about them. They look fun!
Thanks for the detailed review! Very helpful :) I'm getting one of these to replace my Blue Yeti and I think the price is quite fair, especially for people like me who don't own any proper audio equipment yet. I was looking at the SM58, but the need to pair it with a (good enough) interface brings the price up to more than what the MV7 costs.
It's funny, since making this review I've seen the MV7 become more and more popular and having personally used it regularly with both XLR and USB, I think it's very much worth it for someone who has the budget. I've recommended it to people who aren't interested in having a complex audio setup and the Shure Motiv app is simple enough to use and really tweak your sound in a good way. Long story short: it's a good mic. The windscreen from the SM7B also fits on it and reduces the plosive problem.
Love watching your reviews! I have a lot of the same setup as yourself - especially with the RCP. Quick note on your comment around 12:30 on whether the Shure MV7 works on USB-C iPads - I actually just bought the MV7 and it worked with the iPad Pro! I have a USB-C to USB-A hub, which I connected the included cable to. Worked perfect with the MOTIV App. Cheers!
How interesting! I connected it directly to the iPad and it doesn't work. Someone else mentioned that Apple is very picky with how much power devices can draw from the iPad, so I wonder if the hub you're using can act as a "middle man" and go around that restriction?
@@tombuck perhaps! I also have found that certain micro USB cables (to your point about that being a dated feature choice for Shure) are not great at charging/transferring data. By virtue of that hub I have, I think you’re right, it might have been a workaround. Could be something you add in a review update!
To get rid of plosives with the MV7, just pick up the filter for the MS7B and it gets rid of the plosives. The part number for the MS7B filter is RK345
12:27 - The most likely reason it's not working on USB-C iPads is Apple is notoriously picky about how much power USB devices can draw. AudioQuest first ran into this with their DragonFly Blacks around iOS 12. That's why they released the DragonFly Red.
Great video, I use the Blue yeti and was debating to move to the MV7 mic. I would like to see a review on great monitor headphones. Especially the kind that fits OVER the ear.
Gday @tom Thank you for creating this video. Amazing value, I won’t say as always, because your production keeps getting better every time. Thank you 🙏
For some, as yet undiagnosed, reason I get a horrible squeal from my Yeti X connected by TRS cable to the mic in on my Canon SL3. I was attracted to the MV7 because of your review. On your suggestion I ordered an SM7B wind screen when I ordered the MV7 (Sweetwater $224 BlackFriday free shipping). Together they do sound great. I don't get any squeal even using the exact same cables etc. My observation about the wind screen cutting down mouth noises is that there is about 1 - 2 inches gap between the capsule and the wind screen. Therefore, it amounts putting a pop filter in front of the mic. My one regret is that I can't use the Blue Voice software with the MV7. Compared to Shure MOTIV, Blue Voice has a ton of bells and whistles. You can let Shure know that you made them a sale. Blessings. Be safe. Be well. May all your ups and downs have only soft landings. ☮🕊☯💙💛💙💛💙💛🙏4 Ukraine.
@@morgangames2706 Thanks for the reply. I find that some poorly made micro USB cables tend to fall out. This is especially true if they are connected vertically to a device. So far no luck finding and eliminating the squeal from my Yeti X. However, Blue tech support and been very diligent in trying to help me.
@@LawrenceMeisel The thing I would absolutely agree with you about the USB cables if it wasn't an exclusive problem with Yeti for me. I haven't had any squealing issues on my side, however my mic for some reason had a weird autotune effect which I managed to fix by tweaking around in the logitech app perhaps try that?
I have also been wondering if i should buy it after this video, because of the disclaimer about the USB living time! But Yea, i am gonna buy it i think...
I saw the price of one of MV7X at my guitar center and ive actually been saving for an SM7B since in audio engineering school...i just LOVED the sound of the SM7B. And with it being popular now for voice over, podcasts, and audio books....we used to use them alot for recording rap vocals at school. We figured since it had the nice roll off on the top end and gave us that beefy low end, we had that low end to play with to take some away in the mix if we felt the track needed it. So I started saving for one. I saw the MV7X (i dont need a built in interface, i have an Apollo Twin) at guitar center and thought "ok maybe they just took away the pad, the filter, and all the other cool gadgets, maybe its a *lesser* quality condenser" so i bought it. My UAD Apollo has the cut off and pad and all that on the interface anyway. HOLY JESUS this paired with a UAD apollo sounds identical to an SM7B.
The Sm7b is better at rejecting plosives, that much stands out. I don't regret buying the mv7, it'll do what I want which is a fair compromise for the money.
@@tombuck Same, we're all waiting on Shure to realize that and make us a similar filter I guess! :) I ran across a product called Kaotica Eyeball, that seemed neat although really expensive. It's supposed to enhance noise rejection and deal with spoken word issues (S's, T's, C's, P's etc) in a noisy environment. Only known compatibility for what I want to use it for, is with the shure SM7b and I think the 57/58 mic. They cost about 197 USD :/
Thank you very much! This was the Sony WCH 700n, but I wouldn't really recommend them for video work, they're just what I happened to have at the time. I do have a very recent video all about headphones with some better options.
I bought the Shure MV7 because I needed a USB/XLR microphone that can plugin to my XLR-to-USB mixer then into my work computer in which IT won't let me install Shure's software. Then plugin the USB connection from the MV7 into my personal computer where I can install Shure's software and fine tune the sound. Just didn't want to use two separate mics as I have limited desk space in my home office setup. So far it's been excellent, though my primary complaint is the touch control for volume adjustment is really finicky as you mentioned in your review.
I will forever recommend people get the Rode podmic, it is such a great microphone for only $100. I also want to say that the MV7 also comes in an XLR only version as well where it is just the XLR with no touch controls and all that for $150. Which if I ever were to get an upgrade or replace my Podmic I would probably get that version of it because I don't ever see myself using the USB functions of the full price MV7 which felt overpriced from the beginning but I will use my Podmic for as long as it lasts me!
Yes! The MV7X is a great option that fits in between this and the PodMic. But the PodMic is definitely built to last, so it'll probably be with you for a long long time 😁
I have been using it for some streams/ our podcast. I would say it is worth it I wish it was only 200$ but the ease of use and how simple it is ( mostly for my cohost) makes it worth it. Now if you already have a decent setup it may not be the best option but I am glad I bought it for my solo streams and solo content so I do not have to move my audio interface around.
Awesome video and a great review. I just ordered mine along with the Zoom P4 for my gaming live stream as well as my podcast that I hope to be starting soon. I found that you can use the windscreen from the SM7B on the MV7 if you wanted.
The SM7B windscreen really helps and the newer MV7's are shipping with a slightly improved windscreen so it might not even be an issue. It's an awesome mic though and I'm shure you'll love it 👍
I've been using the Blue Yeti for years, but it picks up every background noise imaginable, and my keyboard. I just picked up the MV7 and hope to reduce or eliminate them. Nice review btw.
It should help improve things. The Yeti is a condenser mic, which will definitely pick up more environmental sound and the MV7 is a dynamic mic, which should be better at isolating sound near the mic. 👍
This was awesome! This is the closest mic I’ve seen that I’m looking for. Good mic, xlr and usb, however I am looking for a mic that has usb-c or atleast with iOS. I really wish that feature was present
Please make more like this so much information that is very much needed about the different microphones its very useful. Thank you for making this one. Also I am looking in to buying the mv7. Again thank you. 😀
Happy it was helpful! If you've got a little extra money, you can order a customized MV7 from colorware.com. Doesn't affect the sound at all, but it's fun to have a colorful/custom mic!
I just saw this MV7 on sale for AUD 200 on Amazon. I'm a total beginner for this even though I'd been singing on stage for more than 10 years lol This mic seems to be perfect for me. Thank you for your great review. I just ordered mine. & I only need to pay half of it. BARGAIN!!! 🥳🥳🥳 Oh, & I just subs to your chanel 😁❤️
you're extremely good at this, thank you for a great review. watched the whole thing and you put me on to the rodcaster pro. I am a beginner podcaster not sure if I need the rodcaster as of yet and I have a Scarlette 18i8 interface so I am thinking of using that for now, any thoughts on that?? but overall mic wise, this is helping my decision! I think it's going to be either the sm58 or straight to the sm7b.
Thank you for the kind words! If you've already got the Scarlett, it's more than enough to get started with. If you get the Sm7B, just be aware that it really performs best when paired with a Cloudlifter or Fethead.
Hey Tom. I sort of suffered through this video because the MV7 just sounded dull. The SM7B is pristine, the Podmic has a little of it's own color but shines in comparison to the MV7. I kept thinking "presence," the MV7 has no presence. Then when you hit the presence setting, voila! It didn't stink anymore. Great review. Peace!
Haha, I'm glad it eventually made sense! It's always a bit tricky with mic reviews because there are often settings that make things sound so much better, but I usually like to stick with the absolute default sound so that people get the most realistic representation. 👍
@@tombuck t To me the MV7 is a $100 mic that you're paying another hundred to slap the Shure name on. I would move up to the SM7b or drop down to the Podmic or the Blue Yeti which I bought for my daughter. My USB mic of choice is the M-Audio Uber which is built like a tank and in a pinch can be used as a boat anchor.
Really surprised you still use the RODE Podmic as your daily driver :D Might make me get that over the Shure that I was looking at. And will pair it with the RODE AI-1 and a Blue Compass Boom Arm - that's the idea anyway :D
Apologies in advance if somebody already said this, but comparing this to a Blue Yeti or other USB condenser mics feels like a mistake. Part of the appeal of this is that it's a dynamic mic, and in the realm of USB mics, based on the reviews I've listened to, it seems to sound better than the AT and Samson USB dynamic mics. But it's considerably more expensive. I have a Blue Yeti and I've enjoyed using it for recording acoustic music demos. I also use it for Zoom calls, because it's easy to plug and go with it. But I ended up getting that big windscreen for a Beta 57 I have, because the Yeti wasn't great for doing narration type stuff, at least on my voice. The Yeti extenuated sibilance and picked up a lot more room tone in an untreated room. The Beta 57 and the windscreen doesn't cause as many of those problems. But I needed to get a Klark Technik CT-1, like the Cloudlifter, but cheaper. It helps to boost the levels up more. I wish the MV7 was cheaper, but I don't think it's fair to say that somebody who needs a USB only mic should just go Yeti, or something like that. Those Samson/AT USB dynamic mics aren't terrible, but they don't sound as good as the SM57/58. So if you need a decent dynamic mic, you're either going to get an XLR mic in the $100 range or something like the SM7B, the EV RE20, or the HEIL P40 or P30. All of these mics will require at least a single channel audio interface to get the sound into the computer. So that's at least $50 on the low end for a Behringer UM2 Audio interface, but you'll probably also need some kind of Cloudlifter type thing to boost the levels going in. So that's at least $30 for a Klark Technik CT-1. So if you pay $100 an SM57, $30 for the windscreen, $50 for the audio interface, and $30 for the CT-1, you're at $210. It's potentially a more versatile system than the MV7, but it's also more complicated to set up, less portable, and potentially harder to use with a phone or tablet. I already had an audio interface for recording music, plus the Blue Yeti, and a Beta 57. So spending $60 on the windscreen and the CT-1 made sense, as it allowed me to leverage stuff that I already had and knew how to use. The Yeti may not be the best mic for podcasting, but it's been a good purchase, and one of the best things about it is that it's dead simple. You just plug it in, plug headphones in, and go. Great for video calls. Great for quick demos, cuz it's stereo. But if I didn't already have that stuff and I was looking to start doing podcasting and I wanted to upgrade my mic for video calls for work, the MV7 seems like something I'd be seriously thinking about. The extra $40 seems like it would be money well spent for somebody who isn't super technical and wants an easy plug and play solution. Does that seem like a fair assessment of this mic?
Somone recommended the Shure RK345 Microphone Windscreen for SM7B to be used on the SMV7 and that it would be a significant change with the annoying sounds when saying T, P, B etc. Or could you or anyone else in here recommend something else?
Yo thank you so much this helped a lot to have an idea on the app settings for it and I just bought it a few days ago so this makes me feel even better about my purchase
Excellent point about the mic being tied to the app. We're seeing the same thing nowadays with many physical appliances, such as cars, tied to software and other stuff that lasts much less than the device itself. With a few more windows versions down the road, that software might not even work any longer... With some luck maybe a third-party application will be able to control it.
Shire has a good reputation and the basic functionality of the mic can work without the app, but I'm never a fan of core features relying on something like this. Overall this mic is pretty excellent though!
Loved the stop motion intro. Lots of little details on this mic that are interesting choices that increase friction/frustration (3/8 thread, cheap windscreen, have to twist enter mic when mounting on stand) seem like nickel and dining to reach a price point. Maybe spend less money screen printing logo and more on usability? LOTS of plosives with that cheap windscreen. Interesting how some legacy companies swing and miss when adapting to new uses/markets. Seems driven more by marketing department rather than engineering. Bummer.
It's a really confusing mic. When it comes down to it- I really do love the sound quality, but there are so many other things that make you scratch your head a bit. At the very least, I wish the included windscreen was better.
Just picked up a couple of the SM7B mics. I am a firm believer in buy once cry once.
Wanna send me one bro?????
loooool I love that motto. Imma put that in my brain. Thank you
Are you recording via usb? I'm getting recordings way to low
@@RodovalPTY recording with XLR is a much cleaner sound if that’s what you’re going for. Costs a little extra but it pays off
What all will I need to run one on my pc
Quick Update Sept 2021: The SM7B windscreen will eliminate the plosive issue, but the newer produced MV7's are shipping with a slightly modified windscreen that performs better than the one I have in this video.

I love the MV7. It makes no difference micro USB vs. USB C. It does not affect signal or latency. It's perfect.
It’s an awesome mic for shure. My gripe with the connector was more about convenience than performance.
No. Ridiculous that this has not usb c.
Best full review of the MV7. I bought the MV7 and all i can say it's WOW!!! Amazing! 😊 I don't have buyers remorse because of the SM7B. They both basically sound the same. You can't go wrong with Shure brand. ❤
Your reviews are not just thorough and informative but really fun to watch. You are a true inspiration Tom
This is so nice to hear! Thank you 🙏
Perfect analysis.
Thank you for this! I never thought of removing the foam from the 58 to use with drums- great idea!
Really happy it was helpful and that you're enjoying the course! 🙏
Enjoyed your review, Thanks
I bought a MV7 today, I can't wait to give it a workout.
You can buy a micro usb C to usb micro converter to fiture proof the MV7's usb output.
That’s awesome! I hope you enjoy your mic!
I have been using a blue yeti X for almost 2 years now. But i just bought a MV7 waiting for it to be delivered and this video solidified that i have made the right
purchase.
Woo hoo! It's a great mic and super versatile, I'm Shure you'll love it 👍
Shure has since released the RK345 Black Replacement Windscreen that is a significant improvement. FYI, the SM57s and 58s that I used when I played in a band back in the 90s still work, perfectly. Because I do corporate podcasting, the software and touch features are great, as I'm often putting them in front of amateurs.

Pro Tip: The RK345 windscreen (from the SM7B) fits on the MV7 and works great (and is only $15)!
Yes! I ended up doing that after this video and it definitely fixes the plosive issue.
I'm a huge fan of physical buttons and dials. Anything that gives a really tactile feel. 👍
The only thing I wish this MV7 app has is a visual meter for the gain input
That would be cool! I did leave that you can use the lights on the MV7 as a meter 👍
Yo -- it is worth the price! Thank you for the thorough review. I just purchased the Shure MV7 and I really enjoy it. I noticed that the XLR cable was causing some feedback -- so I picked up a new one and it works perfectly! WOOT WOOT.
It really is a great mic, and I use mine all the time. The sound it delivers is terrific!
This guy is so underrated, keep it up!
Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind words and encouragement 🙏
Great perspective! Thanks for the real-world example 👍
You could also throw the podmic in there too lol
Sidenote: I would love for them to update the SM7B.
Great video! I wish there was a comparable SM58 windscreen that the 57 has. I can't find it.
You might be able to use the AWS81 with the SM58's silver ball windscreen removed. 🤔
Thank you so very much! I am new in live streaming, but you made me felt in love with this mic that I have to order one from eBay. Once again thanks a lot!
I hope you enjoy it! It's a really great mic.
That’s what I did too and it’s terrific!
Great setup! I really like this mic. I did end up adding the SM7B windscreen to it and that eliminated the plosive problem.
So happy it helped! 👍
What are your settings for it? Mine does not sound like he’s. kinda worried...
Thanks Tom, was helpful, I have been spent 2 decades as radio host, we had used EV RE20 | 27 and these SM7B series. Now, as I feel just for podcasting Rode pod mics would be more than enough!
Sounds like someone with your experience can make any mic sound great, but the PodMic is really nice.
Installed, everything works, thanks!
So glad to hear it! Enjoy your new mic!
Thanks for the great video, comparisons and review!
I appreciate it.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh, great review, btw. I've seen Alpha Gaming and Podcastage review this mic. Each of you had great individual points of view with unique perspectives. Thanks for another quality video.
You’re welcome! I saw his video, but I didn’t watch it yet because I didn’t want it to affect my perspective.
Thanks for the comprehensive review. I think you’re missing that an xlr mic night cost less but you’re now investing into converters if you’re a streamer which boosts the price a ton.
That's always the tricky part to balance. I do like XLR/USB combo mics since people can often grow with them over time.
Tom, that intro was unreal!
I was just goofing around, but now I want to do more stop motion.
@@tombuck you make me want to try it! It looked really cool.
"You wanna stick around for all the dynamic puns I've condensed into this microphone review"
Shurely, this guy is just ribbon me.
Brilliant.
It is very close with the windscreen. I love it!
@@tombuck Thank You, Tom! Looking forward to see more videos on your chanel. Best regards, Mate!
Glad you found what works! For the right person, this can be a perfect mic. And it really does sound terrific.
Your pun game is unparalleled.
Punparalleled?
@@tombuck i hate that you did that you sly dog but your puns are the best puns on youtube

Loved the comparison. I gotta say, the Podmic still kills it for the price. Best bang for buck mic I've ever used 👍. And what is up with that micro USB cable 🤷♂️
While there are so many awesome mics out there, every time I do a review or comparison it just reminds me how much I like the PodMic.
Thank you for a thorough and thoughtful review! I learned a lot and it gave me clarity about how to use the MV7.
I’m so glad to hear that! This comment totally makes my day, thank you 🙏
I ordered MV7, absolutely love the sound and aesthetics of it. Great video dude, thanks a bunch!
It's an awesome mic overall and super versatile. Hope you enjoy it!
@@tombuck Absolutely it is. It arrived yesterday and I love it. I also ordered Shure RK 345 as some other reviewers suggested, it will make it even better.
Its alround good. Its nice it can with usb
For having the usb and xlr work with each other you can have the xlr routed to the stream or recording and the usb to the in game.
Great scenario that I wouldn't have thought of!
Your video quality, lighting, and background are just exceptional.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that.
The MV7 is for the visuals of a audiovisual project, but the sm57 wins for me
The 57 is a great sounding mic, but the more I've used the MV7, the more I've grown to really love it.
Never had a sure mic, but the best headphones I’ve ever owned were made by them.
I’m an artist and would love to use this microphone for my vocals on socials and in my music. This video was exceptionally helpful. And the detail as well, articulated for anyone ear and interest. I’ve just subscribed to your channel. Great review ! ! !
I'm so glad to hear that, thank you! Good luck with all your projects!
I wanna get this mic as a transition piece from usb to eventually XLR
That's exactly what I'm doing
Thanks!
Impressively thorough. You seem to have covered all possible combinations and permutations.
Watched a few videos about this, this morning & this vid sealed the deal. Hookin' my mic up now.
Thanks for the insight.
Hey Mr.Buck glad to see you’re still the same and still making great content.
Hey Gus! Hope you’re doing alright!
Woah, that's an awesome price! The longer I've had the MV7, the more I've come to appreciate it. It's truly an outstanding mic.
I'm really glad to hear it! Hopefully you get exactly what works for you the best!
But that opening !!! :) As soon as I saw this product released I thought, "I'll wait for Tom's review before I make a quick purchase". Than you for the very in-depth review ... so helpful!
Wow, that really means a lot! It's a great mic, just a little expensive and the plosives are pretty noticeable.
Do you hear the audio effects applied on the app when listening on headphones? Lets say you apply some compression, do you hear the compression on the headphones?
Yes, you can hear everything in the headphones with no latency 👍
The windscreen from the SM7B also fits on it and reduces the plosive problem.
im doing the same thing i have been using the blue yeti x for 2 years live streaming. Just ordered th mv7 and im super excited
Thanks again!
To get rid of plosives with the MV7, just pick up the filter for the MS7B and it gets rid of the plosives. The part number for the MS7B filter is RK345
Yes! That's what I ended up doing and it works really well.
@@tombuck because you are brilliant!!! Spend another $14.00 for an amazing mic or another $150.....Not a hard decision for me....😂😂😂
This is a fucking good review. Man, it was a pleasure to watch it. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you! I'm glad it you liked it 👍
"enjoy the dynamic puns condensed - " I chortled. Smooth, so smooth🤣
12:27 - The most likely reason it's not working on USB-C iPads is Apple is notoriously picky about how much power USB devices can draw. AudioQuest first ran into this with their DragonFly Blacks around iOS 12. That's why they released the DragonFly Red.
Interesting- that's a really good point.
Great video, I use the Blue yeti and was debating to move to the MV7 mic. I would like to see a review on great monitor headphones. Especially the kind that fits OVER the ear.
I would love to have some great headphones 👍
Gday @tom
Thank you for creating this video.
Amazing value, I won’t say as always, because your production keeps getting better every time.
Thank you 🙏
Haha, thank you so much! I'm trying!
For me my Yeti X simply refuses to stay connected and the USB keeps getting unrecognized. SO Shure Mv7 is my go to right now
@@morgangames2706 Thanks for the reply.
@@morgangames2706 Thanks again for your interest.🙂
I like the resonance of the Bright tone. Very nice. The budget-friendly FDUCE SL40 XLR/USB is similar to Shure MV7.
This review was amazing, so in depth. I just ordered an MV7 because of it.
Thank you! It’s a great mic- I’ve been using mine a lot since this video.
I have also been wondering if i should buy it after this video, because of the disclaimer about the USB living time!
But Yea, i am gonna buy it i think...
@@emilhansen4545 that's what I was on the fence about and he's the only reviewer that even brough that up. great review.
This was a great video! Awesome stop motion in the beginning. I'm shure of that 😂😂
Nice. I really want to do more stop motion stuff just for fun.
got mine for 123$USD brand new amazon shure on prime day, cant be more happier.
Absolute amazing deal right there!
I've found that the SM7B windscreen really helps on the MV7.
@@tombuck Same, we're all waiting on Shure to realize that and make us a similar filter I guess! :)
I ran across a product called Kaotica Eyeball, that seemed neat although really expensive. It's supposed to enhance noise rejection and deal with spoken word issues (S's, T's, C's, P's etc) in a noisy environment. Only known compatibility for what I want to use it for, is with the shure SM7b and I think the 57/58 mic. They cost about 197 USD :/
I really like your video, it's very detailed and informative. May I ask what type of headset you are using? I couldn’t find it at the description.
This is a perfect use-case scenario. I'm glad it's been working out! I really enjoy mine.
There's absolutely something to be said for the simplicity it offers.
Hi, it's Peter - Brought the live group in here to show off your video!
It's an awesome mic though and I'm shure you'll love it 👍
wtf!!! 57 with that windscreen - WOW!!!
ive watched a lot of reviews alrdy on this mic and this vid is the best one fr
Thank you! It's long, but it was a lot of fun to make.
I was just thinking about it a few hours ago... Thanks! love the vids, keep them coming!
Thanks! Glad it was timely for you!
You can definitely get it to work on iOS with a USB C adapter, so it could still be a good fit.
Thanks Tom!....Great presentation! Very concise, precise and in-depth comparison.
Glad it helped! This is a long video but it was fun to make.
I'm a total beginner for this even though I'd been singing on stage for more than 10 years lol
This mic seems to be perfect for me.
Thank you for your great review.
I just ordered mine. & I only need to pay half of it.
BARGAIN!!! 🥳🥳🥳
Oh, & I just subs to your chanel 😁❤️
That's a GREAT price! Hopefully you really enjoy it!
@@tombuck Will do!!!
Can't wait to get it home 😁
Thanks Tom 😊😊😊
you're extremely good at this, thank you for a great review. watched the whole thing and you put me on to the rodcaster pro.
Your videos covering the MV7 and the PodMic helped me make a decision. Ultimately the MV7 won out for me, mainly for the USB out and ease of use.
I'm so glad you found what works! It's a really great mic, and I've been enjoying mine a lot.
@@tombuck t
To me the MV7 is a $100 mic that you're paying another hundred to slap the Shure name on.
This video is from a while ago, so my mic collection has grown A LOT since then 😁
Lately I’ve been loving the Blue Sona and Earthworks ETHOS
@@tombuck nice :) what would you recommend for a streaming/podcast and VO mic these days?
LOVED that intro XD
Thanks! It was really fun to make 👍
Nice review again. I also bought an MV7 but returned it. My Rode Broadcaster mic sounds much better on my Rodecaster Pro.
The Broadcaster is a beautiful mic.
This is some great insight and info, thanks for taking the time to share it! Hopefully it helps others out 👍
I think I am going for the Podmic with the new windscreen, even the XLR MV7X is way too expensive for my discord/zoom meet needs.
Somone recommended the
Shure RK345 Microphone Windscreen for SM7B to be used on the SMV7 and that it would be a significant change with the annoying sounds when saying T, P, B etc.
Or could you or anyone else in here recommend something else?
The SM7B windscreen works great! I also like the colored SM7B windscreens from reporterstore.com
Yo thank you so much this helped a lot to have an idea on the app settings for it and I just bought it a few days ago so this makes me feel even better about my purchase
I’m so glad! The app does add in a lot of functionality to the USB side of things.
Came for the mic. Stayed for the puns
Wow. What a complete video!
Thank you! It’s long but I wanted to include as much info as possible.
