    This mic is a clear discrepancy of what consumer actually want vs what brands wants and what brands thought consumers want:
    1) Brand thought with so many podcast using the SM7B, if they add the Shure logo, it will be free advertising for them. The only reason I'm not upgrading to 6 of the SM7dB and bought 6 Lauten Audio LS-208 is purely because of the logo that Shure added. If I don't use it hang down, the logo will be upside down unless I open the screw and rotate it and screw it back.
    2) They beauty of the SM7B is how subtle it was, the black plate makes it look so clean, now they no longer gives you the back plate
    3) It's nice that they make the switch easier to access, but what's the point if no one even uses the switches in the first place?
    4) Build in Pre-amp 5 years too late, now entry level audio interfaces already have 69 db of gain like the latest generation Scarlett, 76 db of gain with the Rodecaster pro II/duo, 80 db of gain with mackie DLZ creator. How about studios? People will studio already have preamp like the 1073 which already have more than enough gain to power the SM7B.
    5) The mic color (shiny) and proportion just looks wrong and camera, the elongated design with the taper, just make the mic looks weird, the original SM7B already look perfect, why mess with that?
    6)Here's what people actually want, we want the next generation of SM7B
    -Better sound so we can upgrade our current SM7B to the next generation SM7C. Maybe neodymium magnet? Improved capsule? Better internals? Lower Noise Floor with the same sound signature?
    -The wire coming out from the side, we want it to be internal so it will look cleaner on camera
    -Better yok mount so it's easier to screw
    -Built in wire mesh pop filter inside the cage for the capsule, perhaps something like the JZ-PF pop filter
    -We want the rest to be the same, because of the MAYA effect - Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable - To sell something familiar, you must make it surprising and to sell something surprising, you must make it familiar.

    Thanks for the time to make this. Yeah if you have a good enough setup you won't need the added benefits of the db, since it is exactly the same mic as the older version, I didn't expect any sonic difference anyway since micboosters are not known to color the sound too much. You can buy many types of mic boosters for less than 100usd like the fethead nowadays anyway.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад +4

      Yeah, the CT-1 is quite good! I do appreciate the convenience of having a booster built in with no need for extra cables or anything, but I don't think it's worth $500.

      @@tombuckI can imagine a few situations where you wished you spent the extra 100 , but that is mostly if you use it on tour or very disorganized 😂
      But if a 100 makes the difference between being heard or not... It's not that much of a difference to not buy the option of (much) easier deployment. I know it is 25% more. But it's not an expensive item in the pro range of gear to begin with.
      I wanna buy a Sennheiser md21 but can't find a review where it is tried with a bit more distance. If it doesn't mind 70cm too much I want a different setup 😂 any recommendations for the 21?

    Tom, another excellent microphone review. I always enjoy hearing your prospective on new microphones.
    You mentioned the difficulty of mounting the Rode Procaster. I too was having problems. B&H included a shock mount with the Procaster that was similar to the Rode model free with the microphone. Because the Procaster is so heavy I had problems getting the microphone stay in my set position. Because of that problem I purchased a Gator Frameworks Universal Shockmount for 18-55mm Studio Condenser Microphones from B&H and placed it toward the middle of the Procaster. I did my best to find where the microphone’s balance point was. This new shock mount has solved my problems. I can now set the Procaster in almost any position and it will stay. This shock mount sort of mimics the “cradle” style mount on the SM7B and it does a much better job of isolating “handling noise” as well.

      Hey thanks for this! I added it to my B&H wishlist. Such a smart idea!

    I definitely thing the dB is a potentially good mic for the new RUclipsr who's just starting to get their own gear, has heard so many people say they "must" buy a booster and has gear that is not properly capable. But it is good to know that the same sound people have come to depend upon is still present in the dB.
    Video Idea: Booster Alternatives - there are a few affordable mic preamps that can help deliver better quality sound and do more than simply boost the signal. ART Tube MP is a great little tube preamp whose V3 costs in the same range as a CloudLifter and the used V2 can be had for $40 or less. I've been playing with my old v2 lately (as I've been thinking more on outboard gear) with the RE20 and AM30 and have been enjoying the exploration.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад +1

      I do have a booster video from a while back, but it could be worth trying out some different ones. Although with so many new interfaces having so much built in gain, I'm wondering if boosters overall are becoming a thing of that past?

    • @onocoffee
      @onocoffee Год назад +1

      @@tombuck Agreed on the interfaces with more boosted preamps but just as a thought, the recording studio world still uses preamps and outboard effects (albeit a price points much greater than the average RUclipsr) to help shape the sound. I've been playing around with it lately to see if they will add a better dimension to our voice overs.

I wonder how it would be compared in RodeCaster1(i have one, and there are now so many good deals on ebay, now) and SM7B with boosters vs SM7dB .. ..Every time i look at these SM7B mics, i find so obvious design flaw of cable, could go out of mic, just below, near of support, that would even hide it almost.. I did the same test, with my 32bit Zoom recorder and played with the gain at 18, 28dB in the mic and then adjusted the gain in my recorder appropriately. That said, they had a sale on the SM7dB for $355, so I picked one up. The only thing that is nicer on the dB is that the low cut and presence boost can be flipped with your finger. Given that they had a panel you could screw over the SM7B to make sure no one messed with those settings, I'm sure that depending on the use for it a sound guy might want to make sure no one was messing with things. But of course after a few tests, I knew which settings I was going to use and they will likely remain there indefinitely.

  • @theamateurwithaccess
    @theamateurwithaccess Год назад +1

    The SM7dB really is a mic for people who are ready to update their sound but not necessarily ready to switch interfaces it seems. To wit, a beginner who may have started their journey with a budget interface or at least one without crazy amounts of gain, may be using a less expensive mic with it. An upgrade for that person typically will not just be the interface, it will be the mic too. When considering the prices of new podcast interfaces, the SM7dB doesn’t look expensive at all.
    For example, I have a Tascam MiniStudio Creator US 42b. It has 2 preamps and I have a Maono HD300T and the same Klark Teknik Booster you have. A decent setup that does what I have asked from it well, but it definitely isn’t being updated. But, fun fact for those who don’t know, the Klark Teknik Booster only has an EIN of about -120db which is about the same as the Ministudio. I can run the mic hotter, but I won’t improve my noise floor at all. Reports say that the EIN with the Booster on the SM7dB is more like -130dB which is a significant improvement to the noise floor for someone in my position.
    So, when someone like me looks at the price of upgrading their setup, any old booster won’t do with an SM7B if I want to improve the noise floor and upgrading my interface either costs me a ton of money and adds preamps I won’t use or (in the case of the Vocaster) cost me a quarter ton of money and sacrifices features (the MiniStudio has 3 sound pads and records multitrack).
    The thing that is often missing in reviews of Mic Boosters is the EIN they bring to the table. That is the puzzle piece that would help the most when choosing between the SM7dB, the Dynacaster and the Blue Sona and other mics of their ilk. I am not sure if it is scientifically possible to get better than -130db EIN but I would need to know what EIN the other mics are working with if noise floor control is my main concern (and for me it is, I actually like the MiniStudio). Hearing the mics compared on an already excellent but super expensive interface kinda leaves people with those less capable interfaces in the lurch because we aren’t hearing how they may sound on our systems.

      One of the great things about the SM7dB is that you don't need much else. You will need an XLR interface (any one should work fine since it has the built in booster, so something like a Focusrite Scarlett Solo is probably the simplest place to start.

    Yeah honestly main reason I upgraded is because of my 3rd gen Scarlett 4i4. I got it for a crazy good deal years ago since the store I got it at had it priced for the price of a 2i2 and they honored it because they mislabeled it. I’m keeping this interface until it stops working so I upgraded from the mv7x to the sm7db, made a quick $50 off the cloudlifter I don’t need any more. Plus not having to use 2 xlr cables. Sorry for the pointless long story 😂

    Great that you went so much in detail in this video. I bumped up the audio in my headphones to hear those nuances.. I'm all with you regarding this new/old mic and understand who it's for 100%. On this end I'm still flaggin' out of sheer pride that I invested in an Earthworks SR314 because it's great, great, great. I use it both live and for studio, livestreaming.. I've even tested it in a church environment where my PA was quite close to me (BOSE L1), worked great. Oops, that wasn't a subject here, bragging.. But when you were showing and demoing that gorgeous EV-RE20, I've always favoured it more than SM7B, it sounded just great, despite plosives.. And, Tom, you can't spell an iMac without Mac 🙂 Cheers!

    omg this is actually perfect for me 😭😭I've had my heart set on the SM7B for years bc I love the sound as far as I've heard it from several of my favorite creators and musicians, and I've seen how it preforms on voices with similar ranges to me, doing things similar to what I plan to do with it. Add the fact that I hate handling noise and I like the look of the SM7B, and I've been very focused on it ever since. I, personally, do not have the budget for it as of currently - I'm a student, so it is what it is, but despite that, I've been set on it and refuse to get anything else. I know it's a bit ridiculous, but honestly? Yeah, I've seen cheaper alternatives, ones that would suit my purpose and are a tenth of a price, but I know how my brain works - if I buy a cheaper alternative, I'm going to be unsatisfied with it until I actually get an SM7B, in which case I'd end up spending more by getting the alternatives on top of the one I actually want.
    *However.*
    I'm absolutely HORRIBLE at cable management. I'm always getting tangled/having things fall apart/come unplugged, and it's insanely annoying. This issue is happening with the $5 microphone I got at a garage sale and a $2 cable, so I know it would be even worse with even more elements. As in love with the SM7B as I am, I've been absolutely dreading having to sort out the cables and the cloudlifter, since my audio interface doesn't have any sort of preamp. I found an amazon bundle for the SM7B, a cloudlifter, and the second cable I'd need to connect it all, and it goes for $600. I know there are cheaper options but I don't trust my own judgement enough to confidently pick something else, so I mentally settled for that bundle. I just went "I can't do that yet, but I'm willing to spend that to get it, so I'll bookmark this and wait until I can" because that's how much I want it. So, a $500 microphone that sounds exactly like the SM7B, not worse not better but _exactly_ like it (as again my interface doesn't have preamp like that), with the addition of easier-to-access switches (bc I'm the sort of person who loves to mess around with settings to see what works) and the gain built into it?? The thing I want most but without the part I'm dreading, for $100 CHEAPER than I was willing to pay for it??? Perfect for me.
    anyways, long ramble bc I'm pretty much the exact target niche of this microphone, but I LOVE THIS VIDEO. I've spent ages watching various microphone reviews, trying (and failing) to find one that was cheaper but more appealing than the SM7B to me, and they often take forever to get to the point. This one was straight-to-the-point but in a way that kept me watching the whole time, and the comparisons were super helpful! Plus, I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone do a distance test of any sort?? Which is another part of why this is such a helpful video for me 😭tysm for this

    SM7B user here. I noticed that some devices from my desk make noise in my audio signal (Like RGB Led Strip (Philips HUE), or USB Charger adapter (Baseus), etc. when they are near my XLR-XLR cable from the SM7B to dbx 286s) When i turn them off i have less noise + lower noise floor on my signal. (Also seen it with Ozone Imager)
    My signal chain:
    Shure SM7B -> dbx 286s [using (Roland) XLR -> XLR], (Out) Mic level signal -> (In) Mic level signal
    dbx 286s -> PreSonus Studio 24c [using (Roland) TRS -> TRS], (Out) Line level signal -> (In) Line level signal
    Do you have less noise and lower noise floor when instead of having the signal from the mic boosted with a pre-amp at the end of the cable like i have it in my case with the dbx 286s (so any noise picked up by the cable in the middle gets boosted too because everything in the signal is being boosted at the end of the cable) rather than boosting the signal from from the mic from the start with a pre-amp like Cloudlifter (so any noise picked up by the cable in the middle doesn't get boosted with the signal because the signal is already boosted at the start of the cable)??
    I have lot of devices on my desk and probably i'm gonna have more with time but i think that that has a bad impact on the noise on the mic signal.
    (Software Engineer, not any audio-music related background) 🤔

      I've had issues like this when using cheaper cables, but I haven't had problems when using nicer cables. The new Rode XLR cables seem to be pretty great (the cables themselves are Canare and the connectors are Neutrik). I also have a handmade cable from Allen over at the SoundSpeends channel and it's practically impervious to interference.

    • @julesc8054
      @julesc8054 Год назад

      Traditionally in live sound applications lighting signals have always interfered with sound causing buzzes and other interference. Just a few ideas see if any apply.
      As a general rule you should have non shielded power items at least 15-30cm (6-12 inch) away from the audio signals. Power/ lighting and audio cable runs should always be separated and cross as close to 90deg angles as possible, this way no current can be induced into the audio signal. This is an obvious one but, check to see if all the pins of the cable work correctly as it sounds like a shielding/grounding issue. Also check to make sure all units connected have the same power source and are all earthed with the same earth and the power is earthed/grounded. The connection between the DBX and the PreSonus should also be a stereo 1/4-inch jack to carry a balanced signal.
      As Tom already mentioned the quality of the cable can be a factor. I generally use reasonable quality braided shield cables.
      if you bypass the DBX does the problem still exist. If you are recording the DBX's aren't necessary for gain, just record at 70% gain on the PreSonus and boost in post.
      If all this fails, say hi to the folks at your local music store. I hope you come right, Sm7's with the 286's are an awesome combination for steaming/podcasts.

    • @vasileiospgr
      @vasileiospgr Год назад

      @@julesc8054 Already checked all the pins of all my cables and they work correctly. All cables are Balanced (I only use XLR & TRS cables) and all cables are Roland high quality.
      If i use the 70% Gain on the Presonus and boost in post, i will get the same noise from the cable because both signal gain boosts are happening at the end. (one at the Presonus and one in Post) i just haven't tried any pre-amp like a cloud lifter etc. that boosts the signal at the start of the cable, before that cable catches interference from other devices. I will try one when i can, if i can. 😉

    I'm finally making the leap from USB mics to XLR mics and this one has been on my radar. Since I don't have any audio interfaces yet and I've found the SM7dB for significantly cheaper since this video launched, I feel like I might be one of those "specific" people it could be for! Having said that, I'm still wildly undecided and want to make sure whatever I go with is right for me. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I massively prefer the SM7B, the shape is nicer, the lack of a logo is great and I like the matte appearance. I suppose it comes down to whether or not I can find an SM7B and powerful enough audio interface for cheaper than an SM7dB and a slightly cheaper audio interface. Only 10 minutes into the video so far, so I'll see how I feel by the end of it as well! (I also absolutely love the coloured windshields.)

      Yeah, the Sona is really nice. I'm a little iffy on where Blue is now, but the mic itself is great and the design is phenomenal. Something I can't communicate via video is how good it feels in the hand and how high quality all the parts are. Even the little spinny thing that screws onto a mic arm is satisfying.

    I bought this microphone because someone told me that I could connect it directly to the camera Canon EOS R10 but I don't know how to do it. Can you help me because I don't want to spend more money on an interface or should I buy it? .... I just want to make vertical clips for Instagram. - But I'm not familiar with the technology to get into video editing and audio pasting. - Thank you for your videos, they are very good and easy to understand. The way you explain it with clear and specific language for those of us who are not related to all this.

      Unfortunately this mic can’t connect directly to the R10 without the Tascam XLR2D adapter. It’s a great adapter, but pretty pricey.
      It needs an XLR connection and phantom power to operate.

      To be honest, neither one is great from a distance. They really need to be close to the sound source to sound their best!

    Hi Tom, do you have a more affordable analogue to digital converters to test these two? Cause you can test them with the cloudlifters and test which noise floor is better…say a focusrite scarlett or something like this. Cause this definitely will be a good insight to other people and can be added to this videos conclusion or something.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад

      I decided not to include that in the video because there's really no difference to be honest and since the video was already nearing 40 minutes, I just didn't want to have more samples of audio that sounds the same 😁
      The Sm7dB performs identically to the SM7B with a booster and is definitely a good choice for the first through third gen Scarletts 👍

    The general consensus seems to be, if you already have a decent mic this isn't worth upgrading to. If you needed your first professional microphone, this isn't the one to start with. If you already had an SM7B and it worked perfectly fine, then you don't need this one.
    I kind of feel like Shure shot themselves in the foot by putting this at $100 higher than the regular SM7B.

    • @tombuck

      If this took over the $399 price point and the original dropped to $299, that would definitely cause some waves.

    Hey Tom, I’d love to know what settings you’re using for your sm7b on your rcp2. Since you recently tweaked them it sounds fantastic. I know they’re unique to every voice, but id love to test them as a starting point. Do you have a video or a place where you have those settings handy?

      Glad you like it! I used this awesome video as a guide: ruclips.net/video/U4hVGtdo5MY/видео.htmlsi=shLJ8d0vpylpWJky
      But the trick is not to match everything exactly as he sets it, but rather tweak it for what sounds best to your specific voice.

    When you first announced you were going to get the db, I was skeptical because it seemed like a SM7B but with a boost for $100 extra which didnt make sense since Logi covered that department with thr Sona. Now, w/your video I realize the Sona still wins because the noise floor was quieter and is CHEAPER!! Hello!!!
    I think my question now is what are your settings on the RCPII for thr Sona? Do you use the preset for the 7B or have something specisl for the Sona?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад

      I usually use the SM7B preset with the Sona, but I've been trying to spend a bit more time dialing in my own presets and saving them. I wish it were possible to export and share them!

      Their Samson MD5 stands, super affordable and work great! geni.us/Ayyv
      I do use a Shure extension tube on them sometimes to boost the mic height a bit.

    Thank you for this video! Great comparison and very helpful! If you don’t want the sm7db I’ll gladly take it off your hand if you’re not actually going to keep it😅 I sold my sm7b awhile back and regret it lol but would you recommend getting the sm7db or just getting the sm7b again? I moved my studio to my basement so there’s not much acoustic treatment yet other than a carpet and a few panels. So figured this mic might help for now. Just curious your thoughts. Thank you!

  • @teemohnay
    @teemohnay 9 месяцев назад

    Seems like you bought this uninformed and hoping it would do something it wasn't designed to, which isn't the mic's fault. A demonstration of the mic being used for its intended pupose (plugged in to a device that actually needs the gain) would have been a more fair comparison. But I guess the video's content does indeed match the title. Awesome video amd greatly appreciated. Cheers!
