  • The Elgato Low Profile boom arm has undergone some major improvements since its original release several years ago, so I decided to order a new one and re-review it to see how it performs.
    They really did fix everything I critiqued in my original review, including the magnetic cable management covers, which are now incredibly strong and much more effective. It's a key feature of the arm, so the weak magnets in the original were always frustrating.

      I’ve also modded my 4 older Wave Mic Arm LP booms adding lock washers with metal fender washers to the 2 thumscrews (mine do not have the hex key on the elbow) since the nylon washers mine came with slip. Even just doing a rubberized washer would be better and prevent sagging with heavier mics like my SM7Bs.
      Other than that, now that the magnets are improved (which makes me want to upgrade), I love the form factor and build quality. I’ve even removed the post from the clamp and hard mounted it with modified large fender washers and longer screws to a desktop for clients.
      I also love how the post to the clamp is exactly the same size as a 15mm rod camera mounting system. I’ve been able to assemble a super sturdy double mic boom mount on a superclamp so I can incorporate my mics with my rolling camera pole stand along with my camera and key light. Pretty slick and super sturdy! www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/cid9zyriblfehzpotk2lw/IMG_9614.jpeg?rlkey=p4l1bnanhhz0tny1z7irereza&dl=0

    I own an Elgato LP, but I think mine is an iteration between the two you're showing, because while it has the knob to adjust the tension of the upper arm, there's no hole at the bottom of said upper arm to route the XLR cable.
    I'm really happy with my purchase, and the only thing I'd like Elgato to update is to also include an option to grommet-mount it without the need of modding the arm.

    The ONLY item I have from Elgato that I don't regret, is their boom arm. It is extremely solid. If you ever have issues with an Elgato product, their customer service is non existent. I have tried contacting them for help with an HD60x and a Stream Deck Mk.2. I couldn't get a response via their ticket system, reddit and they don't answer their phones during their listed business hours.

Also, I'm not sure if I have that much room on my desk for the low arm to swing. Any chance of making a video on fitting rcp2 on various low arms (with lack of room for arms to swing in consideration) please? Cheers

      @@tombuck so…things that sold me on this arm with your review. I have an arm but the way I like it set up, I try to get it as flat as possible but there is still a little bit of a bend at the elbow showing in the frame sometimes…because it’s not a low profile. Cable channels look great, mine does have that with the magnets. Excited to get it. I just started doing my show in Dec and already am on my 3rd mic, 3rd boom arm…I’m sure I’ll have a collection. I have a Blue Compass (bought brand new for €140 July 2021) and an Elgato Low Profile Arm (bought used for €45 April 2023) and I love them both. Both serve a purpose for different reasons :D Btw, Tom, I have had my low-profile arm for a year now and it seems that almost all the changes you mentioned are present in mine (except the cable poping from the bottom). When I adjust my cable (on rare occasions) the magnetic cover does not pop, only if I apply high force, but that may be debatable. On the side-node though, those changes can be "easily" applied with a little bit of DIY, you can replace the magnets and get a couple of holes in the bottom if you really need that, I don't think that you should replace your arm in case you already have one without those modifications.

Question: I had the SM7B and also bought those custom collored windscreens from Reporter Store. I gifted my SM7B to a friend and also gave them the windscreens and then purcased the Blue Sona mic. They _have_ made gradual modification. I have an older one, but it has a tension knob for the top arm. It looks a bit smaller than the one you have, and it doesn't work that well, so it was probably an early iteration. It _doesn't,_ however have the additional routing hole (which I would use with the Ethos even if you wouldn't!) or the stronger magnets.
    I might need this.

    I have the original and I prevented the covers from falling off by using velcro strips. The main issue I have which is also on the new version, is that the main arm to the desk mount is still wobbly, which was solved by using a piece of painter's tape.

  • @ZekeCao
    @ZekeCao 3 месяца назад

    I wish they would add a second hold towards the rear of the top segment/elbow so that the cable could feed down into the bottom segment without coming up and out again. That would prevent the chance of it popping out of the channel as well. With that change it would be perfect.

  • @robert_may
    @robert_may 3 месяца назад +3

    I have the original one and I've generally been very happy with it, although I did discover after buying it that it can't fit under my monitor 😅Best trick I found with it was to use a right-angle XLR connector into the mic - makes it easier to use/move above your arms. Totally agree with your original list of downsides to it. I'm tempted to upgrade just to stop the cable routing magnet issue, but I do also have a roll of black gaffer tape 🤔
    One question - does it now have an additional hole underneath by the elbow joint? It'd be nice to be able to route the cable out the bottom of the bottom arm and into the top of the top, to stop the cable getting tangled.

    • @CharlotteDrew

      @tombuck  Месяц назад

      There isn't, I guess they're more like "silent revisions"

  • @onocoffee
    @onocoffee 3 месяца назад +1

    Tom - I think there are a few iterations of this arm. First thing I did was skip straight to the Tension Adjustment chapter because this has been my biggest issue with this arm. I received the LP mid-January 2022 and wanted to love it because I wanted that low profile style. Perfect for my old desk setup. BUT it utterly sucked in holding my EV RE20 at any position except for this one height that it seemed to be okay with. Higher? No can do: droops. If it wasn't in that exact spot: droops. Maddening.
    I would crank down as hard as I could on the middle pivot point - and this is where I think there are different iterations. Yours has a allen key adjust. Mine has a knob adjust. And the first thing I noticed on your white arm is the size of the knob: it's sizably larger than the end knob. On mine, the two knobs are the same size - meaning that you can't get enough torque on the pivot to tighten it enough. And in my emails (Feb 2022) with customer support they just couldn't understand what I was talking about and why I wasn't willing to put a tool on it (like some pliers) and crank it down. I told them to put a larger knob for greater torque but their response was milquetoast at best. Kinda put me off to elgato because of it.
    It's good to see that they've made changes - because I can't imagine that I was the only one complaining to them about this issue. But they acted like it wasn't an issue. It would go a long way towards making me (and I'm sure others) open to them again by replacing our knobs for these larger ones.
    And yes, those channel magnets are quite paltry.

    I so agree! My partner uses the original low profile arm; he basically tries to touch it as little as possible. I recently bought the white one for my white office and was pleasantly surprised at the manufacturing updates - much improved! Although wouldn't it have been nice if they'd included a bottom hole in the back of the top arm (near the middle joint)?

    I must be somewhere in the middle. I have the knob tension adjustment... but I don't have the bottom cable routing option and the stronger magnet. ...... And I bought 3 of these. =[ Super bummer. I would definitely use the under side cable routing.
    You can also just use the mic arm into the base for a shorter arm, if needed. That's a cool feature that it fits in the clamp base.

      Same: tension knob, but no extra cable holes. BUT… I discovered a neat workaround: you can unscrew the upper arm completely and then re-attach it upside down, so that the holes point down.

    Great video ! I'm looking for something that gets out of the way with a microphone like the TLM 103 but still having the best quality possible for voice over. I wanted to go with a Shotgun mic for the over-head style that I want, but not the most ideal for voice over, if you have any tips + references that would be nice ! Also I'm looking for a camera with excellent video quality but still affordable, I can always upgrade later but it's mainly for filming unboxings in order to really capture the most what it looks like in real life at 4k60Fps
    I really love your content, I should find the boom arm for the Rodecaster Pro II, I have the mini but it's better if I can put it anywhere I want, more practical

    I didn't even realize I have one of the newer ones. The magnets still aren't strong enough, IMO, but that may depend on how chonky your mic cable is (Mogami ones are pretty stuff). I also have to really, really crank down on the knobs, especially for the mic mount, to stop it from sagging, which is pretty frustrating. I still like it more than a traditional arm, but it needs more work.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 месяца назад +1

    I wonder when they made these changes. I bought mine in November of 2021, and it has the knob for adjustment and pretty strong magnets. The only difference is the hole in the bottom. My complaint still stands - the adjustment tension is not strong enough for heavier microphones. You have to tighten the heck out of it for it to stay. I had them replace one already.

    Best thing with that arm is that it can hold an RE20 with its shock mount while the PSA1+ was not able to handle this. Also it's just so better with the ball head. Switched and loving the elgato one so far! 💖

    I purchased the Elgato high profile boom arm a year or so ago, it's holding an EV RE20 with it's monstrosity of a shock mount...holds it just fine with no issues. I've wanted to get the LP due to changes made to the desk, so it's good to know some of those issues have been mitigated. I'll use this one for camera mounting or something.

    Question, can the lower arm tension be adjusted as well so it doesn't rotate? I have a very limited space for mounting and I was thinking of attaching the arm to the leg of my desk because the edges dont have enough space for the clamp on the sides and back and the front edge it would either interfere with my second monitor on one side or my PC on the other. I'm wondering if the lower arm has enough tension to hold the weight of the upper arm and the mic if it was mounted sideways, which would turn it into a high rise arm.

    I actually ordered a new one earlier this week, funny timing to see this video now. My big problem is that my original one has developed really bad sag, to the point where it can't hold up my microphone at my mouth level, I put it in place and it starts slowly going down immediately. Hopefully the new version last longer, even though I have to have had mine at least 2 years already. Weirdly my original one has the adjuster knob for the top arm, but doesn't have the stronger magnets so it must be a between version of some sort.

    I've got a version of this that sits in the middle. Mine has the knob on the secondary adjustment point but no bottom route for the mic cable... wish mine had that. I'm probably going to get a newer one because the plates falling off is annoying. It doesn't happen a lot but when it has, it's been at the worst times. I really wish Elgato would be better about letting people know about these smaller product updates. I had no idea about the underside cable routing!

    I don’t understand why more people don’t use pencil mics and just have a clean look. Instead people have a mic 1 inch from their mouth all the time taking up room in front of them. Pencil mic does pick up some background noise however with obs or discord it has background noise reduction built in. You can buy plug-in and have it running to reduce the sound on the fly.
