First Choice ~ Armed & Extremely Dangerous 1973 Disco Purrfection Version

- The glorious sound of MFSB melded with the supple full throated vocals of the women of First Choice to create a dance floor classic. There is no mistaking the Philadelphia Sound here and how disco this is for 1973!
While in high school, Rochelle Fleming, Annette Guest, Malaney Starr and Wardell Piper formed an R&B band called the Debonettes. Rochelle remembers starting to sing at the age of 5 using clothes pins as microphones while she helped her mother hang laundry in her backyard.
The group approached radio station WDAS Philadelphia DJ Georgie Woods while the band members were all 16 years of age and performed an a capella version of Aretha Franklin's "Oh Me, Oh My (I'm A Fool For You Baby). Woods was so impressed he contacted Norman Harris of MFSB fame who ended up finding them a producer at the Sigma Studios named Stan Watson. He used the MFSB house band responsible for "TSOP" and a raft of other orchestral disco tunes to record an albums worth of songs with them.
When it came to deciding a name, the Debonettes sounded dated so at a group meeting a new name was chosen, First Choice. Their first single issued with the new name was "The House Where Love Died" released ahead of the album they were working to be called "Armed & Extremely Dangerous". The song established their disco presence about a year before there were actual disco charts being compiled.
The women graduated high school and lost two members, Wardell Piper left for a solo career and Malaney Starr got married. Joyce Jones was brought in by the remaining members to fill out the new trio. It was this incarnation that appeared on "Soul Train" and then "American Bandstand".
They ended up opening for Eddie Kendricks, Billy Paul, Bobby Womack and Smokey Robinson. A slew of disco hits followed, "First Choice Theme" #7 disco 1976, "Gotta Get Away From You Baby" #16 disco 1976, "Doctor Love" #8 disco 1977 and "Hold Your Horses" #5 disco 1978. Two singles failed to break the top 40 disco and by 1979 the group disbanded. Rochelle recruited new members then they rebounded with "Let No Man Put Asunder" #13 in 1983. Their newfound popularity resulted in a 1984 remix of "Doctor Love" #61, and then the same song was remixed in 1999 and went to #22. In 2001, a remix of "The Player" from 1974 peaked at #7 disco/dance chart at #7. - Видеоклипы
It doesn't get much better than this!!...
Wow takes me back to the glorious 70’s when music was music 🎶 🎵
I never understand these hypernostalgic statements, we live in the most diverse and accessable time for music ever, don't just look whats on top of the charts.
@@mxewris2355 You weren't there. Every genre of popular music was the best in the 70's.All in one glorious mix of rock, country, soul, soft rock, disco, etc.
I never had to change the radio station.
@@maggynewtown3500 As much as I love Disco Music, there was lots of overplayed trash Disco Music too, though. Part of the reason it died. I guess it doesnt make sense to argue about sth as subjective as good music. Just wanna say Golden Age Hip Hop wasnt around in the 70s, Electronic Music, Stoner Rock and Grunge etc., just lots of great stuff I personally enjoy a lot. The great thing about today is that we can consume the great music of the past on top of todays music very cheaply and easily.
@Maggy Newtown every genre was the best in the 70s in your opinion.....basically my generations music is the best because i grew up with it...you wouldn't understand because you're not old enough.....
Every generation says the same thing and it's all rubbish. music is subjective. you can appreciate the music of your day without dissmissing the work of anyone unfortunate enough to not be around in the 70s. Music exists beyond the radio dear.
Exactly @@maggynewtown3500 💯
Her vocal screams and wails are simple amazing.
Michael Richardson: The group First Choice was one of my favorite disco groups of the 1970's and the 1980's. I Really like the song Armed & Extremely Dangerous. when I first heard this song in the club Better Days, and Paradise Garage in New York City, it sent electricity through my body, I really love this song. disco is gone forever but thank God for you tube where we can listen to these tunes. disco will live on forever. Michael Richardson: New York City.
The music of my childhood....what's not to like it was truly magic
mine too !!!
It's all I listen to today@@roseiswine8294
Back in the day, oh yeah!!!!!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Disco in its infancy..Pop music goes symphonic.... perfect 😀🌐
Huh? This is PHILLY. Not Motown
@@maggynewtown3500 … The Motown “sound“ gone symphonic .....
@@11dsw Philly soul stands on its own.
Berry Gordy at Motown wanted to appeal to the "pop" crowd.
Acts like The Spinners and Gladys Knight were not considered smooth enough for Motown. They went to Philly and sold millions of records.
@@maggynewtown3500 ... what I am trying to say is, Motown and Philadelphia in the late 60s began using lush strings in the background. As time moved forward the strings became more prominent. By the early 70s what we think of as the “Philly sound“ was being adapted across the board, Stax, Motown, etc. ....To put it in another way, in the early 70s everybody “stole“ the Philadelphia sound. Of course, out of Philadelphia soul, directly, came disco.
@@11dsw Hello 👍 a year later and I get completely what your saying, which is why old school American music and the cross overs from different states was amazing and the best in the world which sadly you cant say too much about mainstream American music these days especially the Rapper's, for me music declined in 2000 and is steadily going down hill and it's worse here in the UK as we've copied America. Bring back the Detroit Spinners and Soul Child. First Choice would be regarded as a northern soul band here in the UK, what a fantastic sound but it brought out the homophobic cowboys by 1976 and the the burning of Disco records began but the heart and soul of modern disco is still played every weekend across the word today just in a different format. Take care and keep spreading the love 👍🙋♂️
Ok Philly showin up. Theoleschoolmusichawk still Hawkin the 70's memories. The Venango Street rush. Somebody knows.
This song is still fresh after 47 years.
This group was phenomenal❤
I’m From Newark / Brick City & Shout Out To Philly!!
That's
Right beautiful song 🎵
70's
MFSB........simply fantastic. Great to dance to :)
Arrest me I'm dangerously in love with this song....always have been since back in the day....I heard this at The Hippo, in Baltimore, for the first time......I need "Dr. Love" for an injection too calm me down......And my "Newsy Neighbors" never like me for the parties I had, loud music and the wrong type of people....we were just too happy, carefree, and gay.
"Book him Danno.!!!!!"
This song would go straight in at No 1 today ... what a sound the funky soul R&B you only get from Philadelphia musicians. Thanks for uploading 👍
I first heard this at the Deja Vu in Indianapolis. It sounded INCREDIBLE on the dance floor along with tracks by Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass, Love Unlimited Orchestra, Eddie Kendricks, Earth Wind & Fire, and Herbie Hancock. SO MUCH FUN. I became a big fan of this group. They were sort of The Supremes of the pre-disco years. If you've never heard their version of "Love and Happiness" on the album "First Choice Greatest Hits" (Salsoul Records) you will be blown away ! But "Doctor Love" is my all-time favorite of theirs. They never seemed to get a pop hit but they were disco royalty before disco became a global sensation.
Brilliant 1973
I always enjoy listening to 70s Disco music, especially from DJDiscoCat
One of the best Disco songs ever
Couldn't get better than this. Disco era bklyn coney island m
MY memory.
Callin' all cars, be on the lookout for a dangerous man....This man is the #1 DJDiscoCatV2 wanted by all of RUclips for his extremely dangerous music..! Papacat you are simply the BEST.. Thank you.🔥🎵💃 Peace & Much love...
Yes and this song was the first time it had been used this way
This version is hot❤❤❤
Very early disco, pre-disco. Great tight mix, with constant refrain. First Choice were pioneers. This one was copied by Gloria Gaynor in her Casanova Brown ditty. Same style lyrics, IMO. Can't beat First Choice and the music mix. Great instrumental backup. Thanks, Rochelle
Vive les disco freaks...
Bought this 8 Track in the late summer/early fall of 1973... Loved this song and Smart Pants.. They did some Al Green on this tape... Loved it..Thanks!
Yes. Love and Happiness.
I had an 8 track player in my car that I could take with me. Wow back in the day getting your 8 track player stolen sucked. Now we have bigger worries.
LOVED this song! Still love it! My spouse and I just drove by a small community's "Police Department" for their little organization - the people of the community nor the people in the organization carry a smaller threat than the Barney Fife police department (and I won't go into details cause this page is for this wonderful singing group and the song) but every time we drive by there - we burst out singing this song!
So great disco after the lockdown wee must rapidly dancing with the earth, trees , nature en celebrate for people paste way to not forget , tank you very much merci beaucoup

This mix is very 'Armed and Extremely Dangerous' to dance to. I've hurt muscles I never knew I had. 🤣 Cheers! 🎶
Bad ass song
awesome song!!!!, brings back memories!!!!👍
First Choice: TRUTH IN ADVERTISING.
I've singing this song the last few days and I just came across it on RUclips afew moment s ago strange things happen. Great song all the same.
Reminds me of my K-Tel “Fantastic” compilation album from the 1970’s. Takes me back!
oh wow, you reached way back with that. K-Tel was awesome.
The best K- Tel album ever. Discovered First Choice,Albert Hammond,s Free Electric Band,Cliff Richards Power to all our friends, and my favorite on there,The Morning After from the Number One movie at the box office for the first six months of 1973, The Poseidon Adventure. And many other greats on that album. A lot of people think that Van McCoys The Hustle from 75 was the first Disco song,I have always believed that the first Disco song was Armed and Extremely Dangerous, then What a difference a day makes by Ester Phillips. Opinions vary.
Hey,Cat ,this channel will keep me quiet for a couple of weeks!!! Brilliant

Hmmm, perfect semi sunny, windy May morning for some Philly Soul...
I don't remember hearing this music in the 70's
It depends where you were living in the 70's and which radio stations, since I was in Detroit, black music was all over the place and I heard this often.
@@DJDiscoCat If you were in Detroit, you know all about CKLW.
@@maggynewtown3500 yes, I won four tickets to Bob Lo Island Amusement Park from them back in 1974...CKLW forever!

Together with Odyssey's 'Inside Out' , 'Armed & Extremely Dangerous' is in my top 2 of all time disco-hits. Great great great stuff. Could never be long enough, and especially not when the track is mixed by mixmaster DiscoCat... Thanks a billion!

Every time any record with sirens in it would come on the radio , I would pull over.indiana wants me did it every time ..i'd look around not a cop anywhere ! This one wasn't as bad
I worked at a small factory in the early 1980s and was one of the only volunteers at the tiny fire department during the day.
Once I was in early, 5 AMish and had the radio blaring. King Of Pain by the Police came on and the sound at the beginning of the song sounded like the warning siren going off.
I went flying out of the building thinking it was an emergency and I got outside, I noticed the "siren" stopped.
It wasn't until the next listen of the song I realized Sting punked me.
To this day when I hear that song, I think of my heart pounding, adrenaline pumping flight out into that dark morning.
superbe
Another great song I could discover thanks !

Saludos y buena vibra ✌️

Oh, Please tell me you plan to do a super-extended Doctor Love :-) :-)

Bell Records had a patented process for making records. Instead of "Hot press vinyl" they developed an injection molded polystyrene. This is why Bell Records are NOT durable items and wear out REALLY fast.
The OG fuckboy anthem!
😆 yup
Do you take requests for re-editing songs?
Can you please remix "if I can't have you" by Yvonne Elliman! PLEASE my girl cat Snowy (Norwegian forest fluffy) LOVES this song! PLEASE!
I am working on it, but there is not a lot to work with...but I will keep trying!
Podia ser tema da Police Woman ou As Panteras
My brother hollered when at the age of 7 he heard me sing my lyric "the day he walked into my life he caught me with my bra down." My version was better anyway. 😂😂
Sorry, DiscoCat. You have done some decent remixes. Unfortunately this is not one of them.
Just repeating one single note over and over doesn't really do it.
DRUMMER IS BAD AS HELL
