I'm really pissed about the way things are going in these times and you know, for me this one just nails my frustration. The words, the music and the magic vocals of The Tempting Temptations. I could not get enough of those really great hand claps and put them in all over the place. This is the kind of protest music that Motown's dramatic producer Norman Whitfield was putting out at the then current times and ya know, it's time you heard it. Listen to the words. This is great soul music no doubt, but it is considered to be another step in the development of disco. Disco had coalesced from soul music with a little help from Motown and the almighty Temptations. Their elegant and soulful vocals helped to give disco a direction with its gospel driven vocals to that steady 4/4 heartbeat.
It started with Motown and its famous back beat, and then in 1964 a Philadelphia group known as the Volcanoes got together with drummer Earl Young (later of MFSB) to record "Storm Warning" and that song is recognized as the first step towards disco with the addition of soon to be of MFSB Vince Montana's vibraphone now was carrying the melody. The next single that pointed us further down the way the way was Jerry Butler's "Only The Strong Survive", a #1 R&B and a #4 pop hit in 1969, with its signature Philadelphia sound plush but solid.
Motown responded with two significant singles, Eddie Kendricks "Girl, You Need A Change Of Mind" from 1972, and then the Temptations followed with "Law Of The Land" in 1973. Norman Whitfield was responsible for bringing experimental sounds to soul and R&B with his dramatic psychedelic and rock influenced songs for the Temptations like "Psychedelic Shack" and "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone", a #1 Pop 7 R&B hit.
Disco historian Peter Shapiro has written in his highly recommended 2005 book, "Turn The Beat Around; The Secret History of Disco" that "Law Of The Land" was "the entirety of disco in a five minute microcosm. The strict 4/4 beat, the skipping hi-hats, the subtle but crucial conga fills, the hand claps, the dubby effects Whitfield puts on the horns, the hooky string lines, the decimated gospel keyboards with its rigid main beat that marked it as a break from the soul continuum". He means that this single was like nothing before it, and while it came from soul, it was more than that. This new sound is what Giorgio Moroder claims was his inspiration to create Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby".
Another song in 1973 also advanced the disco sound, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes "The Love I Lost", with these two records recognized as being early disco, with "The Love I Lost" becoming a disco club favorite, however the Billboard disco charts were not created until the next year 1974. Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes "Bad Luck" spent 11 weeks at #1 in early 1975.

Sure the Temptations are one of the kind in funky soulful music. It's a Norman Whitfield production. He did so well in producing great music. Bands such as The Undisputed Truth that he produced are amongst my most favourite bands of all times. The Law of the Land is one my fav songs of the Temptations. This is the music I grew up with and sure enough I danced to this music and will keep on dancing to.

DJDiscoCat and anyone else that knows, at one time in the 80's I believe, someone made a song that had the same melody and piano part but it was synthesizer and electric guitar playing the piano part. The vocalist was female. I have spent almost 20 years trying to figure out who the artist was and what the name of the song was.

Great track, but I think I actually prefer The Undisputed Truth’s version, which might have been the original (Whitfield typically tried out his more experimental stuff with them first).
